Ipod no show on desktop of itunes

my ipod (20mb clickwheel), when docked, doesn't appear on my desktop or on my itunes- that's if i can get itunes to even open up...
also when my ipod is connected i can't quit out of itunes, not even force quit-
i've been trying to trouble shoot but all i can find is to "archive install"--
what does this mean exactly? abnd is this the only way?
it seems to be an ipod problem- b/c with my ipod docked, i can't shut down my mac, open itunes or even if itunes is marked as open, is not responding and that seems to inhibit all else.
anyone else having this problem?
anyone have a solution?

  • HT201210 My iPod constantly shows the 'connect to iTunes' sign, how to fix this?

My iPod is showing the 'connect to iTunes' sign, even when I connect to iTunes and do everything it says to do. I have repeated this process several times and still no change. I believe it has wiped everything off of my iPod but I can't access anything on it as it is always on the same screen. Can it be fixed?

    Maybe:
Restore loop (being prompted to restore again after a restore successfully completes)
Troubleshoot your USB connection. If the issue persists, out-of-date or incorrectly configured third-party security software may be causing this issue. Please follow Troubleshooting security software issues. .
Next try placing in DFU mode and then restoring.

  • Multiple good IPOD's show as corrupt in itunes, error 1439

I have multiple IPOD's that test out fine at the Apple store (i.e. they will sync promptly and undergo a successful restore on a windows based computer) but they show as "corrupt" in iTunes at home. When I use the restore function in iTunes I get an error message "unable to restore, unknown error 1439 (or sometimes 1437).
Prior to this these iPods would appear in My Computer but not in iTunes - I corrected this problem by uninstalling and re-installing iTunes and clearing out the temp directory.
Has anyone else fixed this problem? I found several references, but no solution.

Thanks for providing a good amount of detail.
Enable disk use is a setting (checkbox) on the shuffle's Settings tab in iTunes.  It allows you to see the iPod's "disk" on the Desktop continously while it is connected, so that you can copy files to it using Finder (like it was a USB flash drive).  The light blinks as a warning to eject before disconnecting, because the iPod's disk is mounted.  If that checkbox is NOT checked, iTunes only mounts the iPod's disk when syncing, so the light does not blink most of the time (and you can disconnect it without ejecting).
Although you have confirmed that the USB port on the external drive (Is it an OWC miniStack?), which is the same as a powered USB hub, works with another iPod, you may want to disconnect something from a direct USB port temporarily.  Connect the shuffles docking cable there, to confirm it's not the port causing the problem.
If you connect it and run Disk Utility instead of iTunes, does it appear in the Disk Utility sidebar?
Since this is a 2nd gen shuffle, and you use a Mac, you can try using the iPod Reset Utility

  • Songs don't show up on iPod yet show as purchased on iTunes.

I had synced my iPod with my computer like I always do. After I disconnected it, all my songs were gone from my iPod. So I synced it again and tried to put all the songs back on the iPod. Most of them went back onto the iPod, but some didn't. They show up on my iTunes but say they can not be found. It still says they're purchased and won't let me try to redownload them. I've tried turning my iPod off and turning my computer off, but neither helped. I don't know how to get my songs back. I have a iPod touch 2nd generation. This has never happened before.

  • I can't get my Ipod to show up in my itunes on my new computer. Also, i want to transfer all the music on my ipod now, to my new computer.

I want to transfer all my music from my ipod into my itunes. I just recently purchased a new PC. I can only transfer my "purchased" songs. Essentially, my Ipod does not show up in my Itunes. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I hope you get an answer on this. I am having similar problems. I have lots of music on my Nano and now have a new laptop. How do you move those songs into your new laptop from the Nano.

  • Why doesn't my iPod touch show up on my iTunes account?

When I want to download music onto my iPod touch from my computer, my iPod won't even show up on my iTunes account.  I've plugged it in and I've also tried using different cords.  It won't show up and I can't download any music from my computer onto my iPod including putting CDs into the drive and putting them onto my iPod.

Has your iPod been synced with another iTunes Library? If it has then you'll have to wipe your iPod to sync it with a new iTunes Library.

  • Ipod not showing up in Windows/Itunes

when i connect my ipod nothing shows up in my computer. I get an autoplay message that says, "what do you want windows to do.." but there is nothing in the list. And when I hit okay, the ipod doesnt show up in itunes. Once in a blue moon it does show up in itunes and i get a message that says the ipod is corrupted, but as soon as i click okay the ipod disappears from the list in itunes. I have reinstalled itunes, set power management to always let the USB have power, restarted, ect ect. But nothing so far. The ipod hardware itself cant be the problem because it comes up fine in my firends computer. Could it be my computer?? Idk thx! Also this just started happening w/ the new update of 7.0 in itunes...

Try the new shuffle reset tool.

  • Ipod wont show through MyComputer or Itunes

    Hi all,
My Ipod wont show on my work computer but displays on every other PC!
It comes up with the 'Safely Remove Hardware' Icon but doesn't display anywhere else in windows. I have restarted the Ipod Service but when Itunes opens, it says the Ipod needs to be restored, but not on any other PC, it works perfectly.
Any ideas? I am running the latest versions of Itunes and the Ipod software is up to date!

just the itune problem and also itune 7.0 is not that great

  • My ipod screen shows a usb and itunes

My Ipods screen is stuck on the screen showing a usb and itunes symbol. I have reset it and still nothing. It does not show up on My Computer, or device manager or Itunes. I try to restore it on itunes and it gives the message that  there is no ipod recognized or once it popped up that the ipod was passcode protected, I cant clear the screen to use the passcode. Help!

You'll need to connect the device to iTunes and restore it.  If iTunes doesn't recognize the iPod still, try manually placing it in recovery mode first and then performing the restore in iTunes. See this article for instructions on putting the iPod into recovery mode.

I haven't used this iPod Nano with my G5 since it was new. Today I connected it, and it shows up on the desktop, but it doesn't appear in iTunes. • Ipod Nano3g shows on desktop but not in itunes?

So ive tried the five r's excerpt for restore because it has to show in itunes to do so....ironic?
    So basically it plugs in and charges, but i cant add songs to do it or sync it to itunes;

Ummm, ok.... hmmmm, this is on your Mac Mini, right? Older G5 Mini or a newer Intel Mini?
    This article...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61937
    states...
Certain models of single processor Power Macintosh G5 computers may show iPod nano mounted in the Finder but not recognized in iTunes. If this happens to you, try restarting your computer and Setting Energy Saver to highest performance and turn off hard disk sleep. If you have an iPod nano, but don't have a G5, then follow the other steps below.
The other steps all seem to deal with earlier versions of OS X. You are using 10.5? (your system info changed from your first post to your last post, dropping the 10.5 info).

  • Ipod files show as "Gray" in itunes

I was not able to eject my 30 gig ipod video from my G5 imac. So I unplugged it.
I know that's a no-no, but nothing else seemed to work.
When I attempted to reconnect, the Mac would not recognize the ipod. I did a complete restore. Now the ipod icon appears on the desktop, and all the files show in itunes, but they appear in Gray, and clicking on them has no affect.
    Any suggestions?
    Many thanks,
    Steve

The grayed-out songs indicate your iPod is set to Automatically Update its music.
You won't be able to listen to the songs on the iPod if it's connected to the computer. Not being able to click on them is normal.
To change this you'll have to set your iPod to Manual Update.
    To do this:
    1) Connect the iPod
    2) Open iTunes
    3) Select Preferences
    4) Choose the iPod Tab
    5) Select Manually Manage Songs and Playlists
