Ipod nonfunctional after 2006 update

I have a 40 gig touch wheel ipod. I bought it about 20 months ago. It was arefurbished one. I didn't know it at the time, but it's functioned fine all this time. Until now.
I see a lot of posts here about the 2006 upgrade. I wish I had known.
I updated my ipod with the 2006 updater and now it wont show up on my desk top or in Itunes. I reset it. I forced it into disk mode, I've reset it over and over.
Even disk utility doesn't see it.
When I open the new updater or even an older updater, it prompts me to connect my ipod. Itunes preferences says no ipod conneted.
I've tried various usb ports and also the firewire connector. All with the same results.
After reset I get the apple. Then it says it's in disk mode and prompts me not to disconnect it.
If I disconnect it I get the check mark that tells me it's ok to disconnect.
Reconnecting starts this cycle over.
It doesn't change it it press the menu and play buttons at the same time.
-Any ideas would make me happy. I use this not just for music, but I suttle artwork back and forth. I really need it.
-Thanks

Here's a post that helped me-
If you're on a Mac you have to go to the receipts folder in the Liberary folder and delete the itunes files:
If you need to re-install the current version of iTunes here is a trouble free way of doing so... this may or may not take care of other problems as well, if so good luck... my only assumption here is you already have a good and problem free System... if in doubt ask 1st.
1st remove the receipts for iTunes so as a new copy can be reinstalled....
To do it yourself....
Go to the main System library and open the Receipts folder or Type 'Receipts' in Finder search box to find receipts folder....
drag to the trash... iTunes4.pkg and check to see if any other 'iTunes.pkg' files are there, if so, drag also to the trash but only the ones starting with 'iTunes' leave all others untouched and close the folder.
or have a GUI like Desinstaller do it for you..
Check that your HD is in order with 'Disk Utility' ...
Run repair HD from original CD or DVD install disk...
insert disk and re-start holding down the 'c' key until you see the spinning gear.
At installer level do not continue...
Use top left menu and go 'Disk Utility' (pre Tiger).... use 'Utilities' Menu for Tiger and go 'Disk Utility'
select your HD volume with Operating system on...
select 1st aid... select repair Hard Disk.
if errors are repaired run again until none are reported then verify your HD.
quit and return to the Finder Do not continue with the Installer...
Check the permissions are set correct on the Apple installed software...
Use 'Disk Utility' from Applications > Utilities > select HD... select 1st aid. repair permissions... if repairs are needed run again until none are repaired... do not worry about messages 'we are using special permissions etc... they are OK Quit when finished.
Click here to download iTunes 6.0.1 .... then install.
* if you have any combo system upgrades that need to be applied, now is the time to do it.... make iTunes the last thing to be installed.
Now do the HD repairs and permissions repairs again, as above, in the same order. Important
Your iTunes program should work OK now ... there are a few bits which are optional and I recommend as good things to do and that is, Check and set correct permissions on all your music files, replace the dock icon and convert the ID3 tags
Use BatChmod to set correct permissions on your home ~ Music folder
This compact GUI will perform the same tasks as a 'command line in Terminal '
drag the complete Music folder with libraries and iTunes Music folder inside to the BatChmod Icon and drop....
check path is correct.... tick if not already.... Owner=R W X, Group=R, Others=R,
for a 'Shared Folder' ... tick if not already.... Owner=R W -, Group=R W -, Others=R W -.
then tick 'Apply ownership and privileges' 'unlock'... click Apply... provide password... all done very quick...
Drag the iTunes Icon from the dock and replace it with a new copy from the Applications folder
Sometimes it also a good idea to convert ID3 tags...Start iTunes and select all songs in the library ... select from top menu 'Advanced' choose 'convert ID3 tags' .... ver. 2.3 works well with iTunes.
still having problems with iTunes run the latest 'combo' system upgrade... Mac OS X 'Combo' Update 10.4.3 for Tiger... Mac OS X Combo Update 10.3.9 for Panther... Click here for OS X 10.2.8 combo upgradeJaguar

  • The iPod Freezes after Firmware Update 1.2

I just updated my ipod to the firmware version 1.2 and instantly after the update the ipod started to mal-function.
I hope to god this isnt going to become one of those issues that is overlooked by Apple.
If anyone has any suggestions, or ways to fix this or a similar problem, please do not hesitate to post.

I too had this happen to me. Ipod works great before update. I install itunes7 and update firmware and then it starts freezing during song/podcast or video playback. It has to be reset by holding Menu and center button. I tried a restore on it thinking it didn't update correctly. I re-synced by entire library (which takes a while). That didn't help. So I went back to 1.1.2 update
All I did was uninstall Itunes7 and then got the 06-28 update from the another site and installed and restored my ipod. Reinstalled intunes7 and unchecked update automatically. And re-sync all my library.
3 hours I will never get back. But my ipod works again.
I posted a story to digg about this in the hopes of get Apple to respond that there are major problems with 1.2 update.
    Please digg my story

  • Help with changes on ipod touch after OS update

things are different after the latest OS update to my second generation ipod touch. how do i fix these?
-on my recently added smartplaylist, the songs do not show up in order of how they appear on my itunes, in last added order. i already did the copy to play order and synced it
-on my cover flow, there are two of one album and i have no idea why! its fine when its on the regular music part vertically, but horizontally, not. ive checked everything about it. before the update everything was fine. but i even deleted it and put it back on and its still showing up as a double album with every single song and everything the same
-lastly, on the cover flow, unlike the last OS, every song is part of the cover flow even though i do not give it an album name. but only some songs do that. how do i get the singles out of the cover flow.
if anyone has any answer, id really appreciate it. THANKS!

More things wrong after the update!
-My wifi is weak in my house and it's always been best there too
-it says I watched tv shows 4 times in the middle of the night which I didn't
-and before if I were playing a game with sound I could double click the home button and the music player would come up so i can play music instead. But it won't do that anymore. It will only do it if music is playing on the iPod where there is no other sound going on.

  • "Music" menu option disappeared from main iPod menu after software update

I need some help. I own the 80GB Video iPod. After performing the most recent update to the iTunes software, I was notified of a software update for the iPod (v1.2.1) so I installed it on the iPod.
iPod seemed to work fine until I decided to find music using the "Music" menu option on the main iPod menu... well, guess what, there is no "Music" menu option on the iPod. I have:
    Photos
    Videos
    Playlists
    Extras
    Settings
    Shuffle Songs
    ... no "Music" option.
    Any help is appreciated. Thanks,

There is a "Main Menu" option under Settings, that allows you to customize what does and does not appear on the main menu. Just go there and turn "Music" back on.

  • ITunes doesn't recognise iPod G5 after latest update to 9.0.1

    Hello,
I have recently updated to iTunes 9.0.1 and suddenly it doesn't find my iPod G5 anymore. This is very frustrating as I have just finished moving over my headunit + iPod adapter to my new car, with the intent of being able to enjoy the iPod in the car with steering wheel controls... I don't sync my iPod that often (maybe 1x a month on the Mac), but it is up to date and fully charged. Shows in iTunes fine on Windows systems, just not on my MacOS X 10.5.8 + iTunes 9.0.1 since the update...
I have since tried many things, resetting the iPod, restoring it through a disk erase using Disk Utility, trashing iTunes and reinstalling it (not the settings & lib though), repairing disk permissions on my OS drive, nothing seems to bring it back! The iPod shows fine in Finder and otherwise works (worked) fine. After a disk erase iTunes detects the iPod and suggests I restore it, but after the restore it just doens't show it anymore... What can I do to fix this? Can anyone tell me where to get hold of older versions of iTunes? Maybe if I back up the install it will work again. Thanks for your help!

"iPod should OLNY be restored via iTunes"
In the old days we had the iPod Updater, which would still allow us to restore/update it in the event that iTunes wouldn't 'notice' it, nowadays we HAVE to go through iTunes to perform diagnostics/updates/restore. Hence, what do you do when it doesn't show in iTunes so you can't "restore it the proper way"? It doesn't make sense that the solution (restore) to a problem (not showing in iTunes?) requires the problem not to take place...
Anyway, if anyone has a clue what is up with my jinxed iTunes install, let me know. Thanks!

  • Purchased tv shows wont transfer to 30g video ipod even after latest update

OK, so, after this latest update for itunes and ipod, i can only get one purchased tv show to transfer to the ipod video. how do i get the rest to transfer?
      Windows XP

Don't have my video with me, but do a search in the threads, or look in the help files in iTunes and you can find it, or someone will jump in here with it. I know you will need to connect your iPod, highlight it in the source list, and it should be on one of the syncing tabs.

  • Problems syncing my iPod Touch after I updated to iOS 8.1

    Hi,
Yesterday, I tried to sync my iPod Touch with iTunes. It was taking a considerable longer time then it generally takes. Finally, it said there not enough room on my iPod, but I should have had  more than enough... I had about 5 gigs available. After I began taking music, videos etc off, I found out that the other content was taking up about 30 gigs. I ended up resetting the iPod. Now it's having problems syncing music, movies & tv.

  • IPod dead after carrying out RECOMMENDED security update!  Any ideas?

At the beginning of December 2006, I installed the most up to date version of iTunes when prompted to do so. I was then informed by iTunes that my iPod required a security update and so I downloaded this update. My iPod (5th Generation model) seemed to freeze half way through the process. It keeps attempting to load and then crashing when I try to switch it on. The iPod is now no longer being recognised at all by My Computer. I tried all of the recommended troubleshooting steps and advice with no success.
My iPod now doesn’t even turn on properly and given that the PC doesn’t recognise there is a device attached to it, we cannot take any of the troubleshooting steps to fix it.
If changes had been made to the PC, these may have caused the problem and I could have looked at some troubleshooting solutions such as tweaking with the PC registry, updates of drivers etc. However, it is clearly not a PC issue as I have tried to plug the iPod in to three PC’s with no success. The iPod hard drive no longer starts so I'm 99.9% certain it is an issue with the iPod hard drive – the security update has essentially scrambled/killed the iPod hard drive and it seems to need to be completely reset. I have tried the '5 R's' and that did not work. I also managed to get the iPod into diagnostics mode and it says it has issues!
I have had absolutely no problems whatsoever with my iPod prior to attempting this security update (which was recommended by Apple). The iPod has therefore mal-functioned through no fault of my own – if I hadn’t been prompted to download this security update, I have no doubts that it would still be in good working order.
    Any ideas!!
PS - this essential security update and subsequent death of my Ipod occurred exactly one day after my 1 year warranty expired!! Call me a cynic but do I smell a rat?
5th Generation iPod Video 30GB   Windows XP

My problem started after downloading 3.1.2. It gave an error message that said it could not install the program due to an error. It gave me the option of sending the error message to Apple. I declined. My ipod now only displays a screen that shows a usb cable being plugged into itunes. The computer will not read it and it will not sync. My ipod is basically dead. Ive tried all of the fixes to restart it but have had no success. Holding down the power and home button did not work. I held it for nearly 20 seconds. The power will shut off then the apple will appear. Then the usb cable appears again. I purchased my ipod on 10-1-09. Im going to take it back for an exchange.

  • ITunes store won't open and iPod won't sync after I updated to 10.5 on Windows 7

So I recently upgraded iTunes to 10.5 on my Windows 7 running PC and the minute I did that the store would no longer open up.  I get the "accessing" bar and it moves about halfway and then stops and disappears, then leaves my screen with a bunch of boxes and blue links instead of album pictures and what not (and the links don't work either).  I also tried to sync my iPod and this will not work either.  It goes through the "preparing to sync" mode and then makes it to "step 2 of 4" and freezes just after starting that, never to start again.  I've even left it running for hours while I went to sleep or to work just to see if it would kick into gear but the bar never moves again.  I've already configured the firewall to accept iTunes and I've done the whole uninstall/reinstall bit about 10 times, all to no avail.  I've tried moving back down to iTunes 10.4.1 and it works great, except that my iPod already got the update for 10.5 to go through so it will no longer work with iTunes 10.4.  I've been talking to a Tech guy for the past 2 weeks and we have tried a ton of things and nothing works, so if any of you out there have a solution please PLEASE help.  This is really driving me insane.

I have had the exact same problem since allowing the 10.5 version of itunes to update on my computer. I spent over 1 hour on the phone with the apple support team, and they couldn't fix it. After they couldn't fix it, they tried to blame my  Norton 360 security, even though I tried to explain to them that it is a Windows error, and it even happened after I deinstalled the security software. (and yes, disabled the Windows firewall.) I ended up deinstalling all apple programs, quicktime, bonjour, and itunes from my computer. I then googled "itunes apps. downloads" and found a website where I could download the previous version of itune for free. it's not ideal, but I was stuck in a situation where I couldn't use my ipod at all. I can survive like this until Apple realizes that we're not all crazy, and fixes the problem.
