IPod not appearing in iTunes Or Windows

Just bought a new computer, in the midst of transferring all my iPod stuff to this new computer I thought I was done last night, until I tried to update it today and it didnt even show up in My Computer. The apple website has been absolutely useless. I think it would be best to restore it since I have all of my songs on iTunes but in order to do that it has to appear in iTunes which it obviously isn't. Someone please help before I go bald from pulling all of my hair out.

Try closing itunes and htne plugging in the ipod. Or else the other way around. SOmetimes that will do the trick. Thats the only advice i have...good luck

Ipod not appearing on Itunes...Please Help

It would be best to post your question in the general iTunes forums. This forum is for those administering iTunes U sites, so it's not the best place to ask general iTunes usage questions (which is probably why the original question has gone unanswered).

  • My iPod mini is not appearing in iTunes or windows explorer.

My iPod is not appearing in iTunes or explorer. Only when I go to hardware manager windows admits that there is something that is not installed properly. But when I start the hardware manager and put in the CD, as required by the hardware assistant it says: Hardware couldn’t be installed.
So it is not even possible to reset my iPod, because is not recognized by the iPod Updater. I had to go to another computer to reset the iPod. After that my computer is still not recognizing it. So I installed the latest version of iTunes and Updater, but it doesn’t help. I installed also the latest drivers for my computer, but it did not work. Running the iPod in disc mode doesn’t change anything, too.
The iPod is not listed under disc management so I can’t change the Drive from E to G.
I tried the inactivation of all Microsoft-services according to the protocol from the apple web page, but it did not work, even after installing the latest version of iTunes.
I've read the entire troubleshooting pages on how to fix it.
The message on the iPod mini display is always the same when I connect it: “do not disconnect” and after about 3 seconds “OK to disconnect”. But the iPod is never listed in windows explorer or iTunes. I also reseted it, when it was connected to the computer.
I completely run out ideas and I am about to send it to service.
    Can anyone help?
I use Windows XP on a Fujitsu Siemens 1437G laptop computer.

Try Resetting Your iPod while it's connected to the computer.
Hold down the Menu and Select buttons until you see the Apple logo (or Menu & Play/Pause in older models).
This will often get it recognized. It may take several attempts.

  • Ipod does not appear in itunes after windows scan and fix

Two days ago, I restored my Ipod classic using Itunes 9.2.0.61. After restoration my Ipod started freezing Itunes and Vista. At a point, I saw a blue screen and my computer forced a shutdown. When it rebooted, Vista kept asking to automatically "scan and fix" problems on my Ipod. Thinking that would solve the "freeze" problem, I stupidly went ahead to have Vista scan and fix my Ipod. Now the freeze problem is gone, but my Ipod does not appear in Itunes. I have tried the five Rs from Apple, but that has not helped. Anyone with a solution?

    1. Update iTunes to the latest version. Plug in your iPod. If iTunes still can't recognize it, then in iTunes in the top left corner click help> run diagnostics. On the box that comes up, check the last two things. Click next and it should identify your iPod.
    2. Click on your windows start menu. Type in "services". Click on it and when it pops up, on the bottom of it click on "standard". Now Scroll down to find "Apple Mobile Device" Right click it when you see it and click on "Start". When it has started, close iTunes and replug in your iPod and it should show up.
    3. Check the USB cable
    4. Verify that Apple Mobile Device Support is installed
    5. Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service and verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed.
    6. If you just want to add some photos, songs and movies from computer to your devices, you can use an iTunes alternative to do the job.
    7. Check for third-party software conflicts.

  • Ipod not recognized by itunes or windows.

Hi there, I have an 80gb Ipod classic which is not recognized by itunes or windows. The "Use iTunes to restore" message appears on my ipod but when I connect it to my pc itunes does not recognize it. Windows shows a message informing me that I need to format the drive but is then unable to do so. Ipod will not go into disk mode either. I have tried reinstalling itunes and using the ipod in a different usb drive. I have also connected it to a mac and a windows pc but nothing happens. I have tried to use the diagnostics mode on the ipod but that will not work either. I am wondering if my ipod's hard drive is corrupted.

    Hello,
My iPod is not being recognized by iTunes or internet
explorer. It used to, but not anymore. It just
dosent show up when I connect it to my computer.
Also, the "do no disconnect" sign does not appear on
my iPod when I connect it. It is still able to
    recharge, though.
have u tried a different usb port?
I read that I have to restore it. I have tons of
songs in my iPod that I do NOT want erased! How can
I back these songs up? I have some songs on my iPod
that are from another person's computer, so if they
get erased, the songs are gone forever.

  • Ipod Touch not appearing in Itunes using Windows 7

If your Itouch doesn't appear in Itunes try doing this:
The problem is, for some reason, iTunes won’t install the Apple Mobile Device software or service. Even if you extract out the AMDS installation files, it still fails. The SOLUTION is to take the software and service from Vista for AMDS and manually install it. Then, it will work!
First of all, make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed. You can download it from here. These instructions will NOT work for iTunes 8 or 9 anymore. If you’re unsure, just uninstall iTunes then re-install with the latest files. If you want to keep iTunes 9 and don’t want to upgrade to iTunes 9, let me know in the comments and I can get the files to you…I still have them.
Next, you need to manually copy the Mobile Device Support directory from a working Vista machine to your Windows 7 computer
Now, we need to install the correct driver for your iPhone / iTouch. Windows 7 incorrectly identifies the device as a digital camera. To fix this:
    - Plug in your iPhone / iTouch (don’t have iTunes loaded at this time)
    - Go to Device Manager (Click Start, right-click Computer, then click Properties. In the window that appears choose “Device Manager” on the left)
    - Scroll down and find “Apple iPod” or “Apple iPhone” or “Apple iTouch”. It will likely be under the “Portable Devices” category.IMPORTANT NOTE: If your device is already listed under “Universal serial Bus Controllers” and not Portable Devices, you can skip these steps and go to Step 7.
    - Right-click the Apple device and choose “Update Driver Software…”
    - Choose “Browse my computer for driver software” in the window that appears
    - It will ask you for a location; you want to Browse to this folder (location is the same in 32 and 64 bit Windows):
    32-bit and 64-bit: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
    – Click Next
    - It should find the driver for your device; let it install that driver
Once you complete these steps, reboot your computer. Once you reboot everything should work exactly as expected!

  • Ipod not recognized in itunes or Windows

I just went to update my itunes to the latest version which i think was itunes7. When i did so something went wrong and when i disconnected my ipod nothing on it worked. It wont turn on, and wont be recognized in itunes or Windows. I tried the 5 R's and pretty much everything else, nothing seems to be working. I have a 30 GB 5th Generation ipod video. Are all of my songs gone?

    Hi Karen,
It's a bit unusual that a laptop would be recognizing an iPod better than a desktop (usually, it's vice versa).
That indicates that this might be a USB connection issue.
Are you sure that your computer's USB drivers are up-to-date? If they are already updated, then you may need to reinstall those drivers.
See this Knowledge Base article for details on that:
iPod is not recognized properly by computer when USB drivers are not installed properly or are out of date
Also, if that doesn't help, have you tried all of the suggestions here?:

  • IPhone  will not appear in iTunes on Windows 7 (64) no matter what I do.

Ok, so I recently updated my PC to Windows 7 (64), and set everything up again using Windows Easy Transfer. Originally iTunes installed using the version which the Apple Downloader picked up and was working reasonably okay. However, whilst I was playing around with the PC, I noticed that iTunes was installed in "Program Files (x86)". So i figured it must've installed the 32 bit version of iTunes on the PC instead, so off I went and uninstalled and installed the 64 bit version from here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1047
During that installation, I noticed it too installs to the x86 directory so I ignored it. However, this is where the fun started. At first I noticed that as soon as I plugged in my iPhone 4, iTunes would freeze up, effectively going into a "Not Responding" mode. This would rectify however immediately after unplugging the iPhone.
So after a few attempts and getting the same result, I started searching the web for a solution. After which I tried the following: Deleting the USB drivers and attempted re-install. Drivers were deleted successfully, however once clicking on "Check for hardware changes" the Apple Device never again showed up. I then opened iTunes again, plugged in the iPhone again, and now noticed that iTunes no longer froze, however the iPhone did not appear. From this point, here is a list of all the things I have done, from both folowing the support (http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/assistant/itunes/) and other people's advice:
    - Tried a different USB port.
    - Uninstalled all Apple drivers.
    - Uninstalled all Apple Software, including Apple Mobile Device, Apple
    Automatic Update & Quicktime.
    - Searched the registry and removed all references for iTunes.
    - Deleted all iTunes folders from the computer.
    - Deleted AppData temporary folder from my profile.
    - Turned off and restarted the iPhone.
    - Checked for software conflicts.
    - Restarted the computer after each change.
    - Reinstalled Apple Automatic Update from a fresh download.
    - Reinstalled iTunes using the Automatic Update application.
From here I started iTunes again and plugged in my iPhone. This time however I got a message saying something along the lines of "cannot connect iPhone, required software is not installed, this is a 32bit version of iTunes, please uninstall and reinstall the 64bit version of iTunes (this is a little confusing as I learnt earlier that you cannot install the 32 bit version on a 64 bit machine as you get an error during installation).
So, again. I uninstalled all of iTunes and associated software, downloaded the 64bit version of iTunes again - thinking the original version of the EXE was corrupted somehow during the download. After reinstalling, I plugged in my iPhone. It showed that the device drivers were installing, however at some point they failed. I then went back into device manager and uninstalled the USB driver and clicked on "check for hardware changes". This time the iPhone was found and appeared to install the drivers successfully when I plugged the iPhone back in... but low and behold, the iPhone was still not showing up in iTunes.
I have spent a good few hours on this, and am getting pretty frustrated. Does anyone on here have an ACTUAL fix for this problem?
The only thing I haven't done is do a factory reset of my iPhone, which I'nm hesitant to do, as I haven't had a chance to "export my purchases" off the handset to the PC as yet.
    Cheers,
    Steve
PS: Just out of interest, the iPhone still connects perfectly fine on my work (XP) machine.

I'm an applications developer and also run a part-time videography business. As such, I require more than 3.12GB of RAM. That is the physical limitation of a 32bit system. Pointless to stay on 32bit if you plan on having more than that much RAM.
I'm also not about to pay someone to fix my PC when I can do it myself. I was originally hoping for someone who had experienced the problem before to point me in the right direction so I didn't have to spend so much time trying to figure out what the issue was for myself.
Basically, in the end the problem was caused because right at the point in time when I chose to uninstall, and reinstall; Apple released a new version of iTunes. This version in turn had a requirement of iOS 4.2 to sync with the iPhone. This is a pretty embarrassing for Apple that they would release software reliant on other software before said software was released.
Had I realised I was downloading a newer version at the initial point of installation, this wouldn't have been an issue. I could've easily have rolled back iTunes to the previous version and gotten on with my life.
Another issue is that iTunes is not actually a 64 bit application. It masquerades as one to allow installation on the 64 bit platform.

  • Ipod not showing in Itunes and Windows 7

    The Fix
I uninstalled everything that was Apple related and reinstalled Itunes with no loss to my data.
Once reinstalled, both the ipod is now showing in itunes and everything is working fine now.
I hope this helps anyone else out with the same problem of an ipod not charging, not showing in Windows 7 and not showing in itunes.

Glad that it works but if you read the threads, usually that is tried and suggested/recommended, of course, but fails to solve the problems.
Also, Devices and Printers is a good place to start and look there to even see if Widnows detects iPod but also has an error exclamation and "error."
I'll say this, Apple Safari and iTunes and iPod support software, can be the most buggy sofware I use on Windows with more problems and issues. Shame.
Tried to or accidently pluged iPod Touch 4G into one of my other PCs and had issue when I brought it back over. Use of inferior quality 3rd party cable might also be blamed.
iTunes video playback, movies and music video, would hang, freeze, go into a "wait chain" (better with Windows 8 Dev Preview, but that is PRE-BETA!).
Apple Common Support Software issues, which 2.0 version can be a problem. Used by iTunes and Safari. Seems like iTunes was better before installing Safari. Two PCs and they are almost 200% identical as can be, but Safari would hang.
May need to remove Apple folders in AppData (move to safe place) if there is a problem there.

  • Ipod not recoginized in itunes and windows explorer but is charging

ok  here's the deal, like it says in the subject line, when I hook it to my pc it charges but isn't recognized by itunes or windows explorer.  I've already reset the ipod (by holding down center and menu button.) and I've already uninstalled and reinstalled itunes.  Just got done checking services.  The ipod service was set to manual, so I restarted it and changed it to automatic. Then I reset the ipod and plugged it back in, still no good?!?!?!?
Any ideas, besides something super drastic.  Thanks in advance

  • Ipod not showing in itunes or windows/my computer

I have a brand new 80 GB ipod classic and have the latest version of itunes but cannot get it to work.
It does not show up in itunes or my computer. I have tried everything in this list:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61711
But nothing has worked. My partners ipod works fine on this computer.
    Does anybody have any suggestions

I had 80 GB ipod before and it used to work fine , then last week I upgraded from 80GB to 160GB video classic and also i updated itunes to 7.4.1 , the first 2 days it was working excellent and on sunday morning my laptop did not recognise it , neither did itunes. It was unable to detect it . I was frustrated , so on monday i thought lets try on my office pc , also office pc did not detect. Then I did a hard boot of my ipod by pressing center button and Menu button simultaneously for few seconds and the apple logo comes and after that the menu comes , then i plugged in the ipod to my pc and now it detects as a drive. My office pc doesnot have itunes so i could not check wether Itunes detect it or not. I will check today evening that. but atleast now its detecting as a drive . I guess there is a serious problem in Ipod classic , also I found one other intresting problem. My previous 80 gig ipod was to work as a charm on my laptop external 2.0 USB device , but this 160GB classic doesnt work on external 2.0 USB device , I have to plug to my 1.1 USB port on my laptop which is very disappointing. My external 2.0 USB device shows error saying APPLE USB DRIVER NOT Found. I seriously know this is problem from ipod classic. Since my preious 80GB use to work like charm. I guess I have to update my laptop now.
