Ipod not being recognized, won't reset, nothing is happening?

My ipods battery was dead so i plugged it into my computer to recharge, once i plugged it in and it was recognized it told me that i needed to update my ipod, so i clicked ok. after a few moments of updating it told me to unplug it and plug it into an external power source. not thinking that my battery was dead i unplugged it and it hasn't been normal since. no matter where i plug it into (computer, wall, or car) it only makes a clicking noise, nothing happens with the screen. i've tried resetting it, no luck. any suggestions? its an ipod photo, and it's about a year and a half old. is it dead or is there still hope?

Did you ever get this figured out? I just bought an ipod off of eBay and pretty much the exact same story as yours.

  • 5th generation IPOD not being recognized by my Macbook

I recently purchased an Ipod Touch and it works fine. Now my 5th gen video Ipod is not being recognized by my macbook. I've tried it all restart, disk mode, checked the cable, switchd the port but nothing seems to help. It just does not appear on my macbook it will charge on a home or car charger but not through my mac book as if it doesn't exist!!
    Please help Thank you

What have you tried so far in terms of troubleshooting? Did he give you the cable that was originally included witht the Shuffle? I ask because if you are using a 3G/4G cable it will not work with the 2G Shuffle.
Have you worked through all the sugguestions here as necessary?

  • 2nd iPod not being recognized under devices

3rd try! Sorry if it posts a number of times but it keeps saying can't post without a message.
I have two iPod touch and two iPad2. I got the second iPod touch before the iPads. When I plug it in to sync ( all are on my account), iTunes lists the I
Pod's name. But it always syncs to my iPod one unless I spend 30 min manually syncing.I don't have this problem with the two iPads. Tonight, I noticed on the computer that iTunes says it is supporting three devices not four, any thoughts on how to fix this? I am actually not wanting to sync the second iPod because it is so frustrating.

    Thanks,
One is called Kimberly's iPod the other is Jenae's iPod. Jenae's iPod is the one not being recognized by the computer and has to keep being manually fixed, it won't sync automatically. Should I still try changing the name on iTunes and assume it didn't pick it up the first time.

  • 3G iPod not being recognized on Mac OS 10.4.6

Hello, I am asking if anyone knows/has had a problem with the 3G iPods not beign recognized by iTunes or Finder. This is an all of the sudden problem and has caught me by surprise. I have done the "R's" Apple suggest and still nothing. Could it be time to get a new one? If you know how I can fix thsi or has suggestiosn besides any of apples I am willign to try it.

O, I am sorry for the wrong position for this topic. Although this topic should end because I figured out the problem this morning.
It was by sheer trial that I tried to use USB cord opposed to the firewireone itried os many times. I dont remember reading anythign about this. Well sorry for misplacement.

  • IPod Not being recognized with all the software updates

I've been without my iPod for a few weeks now and I desperately want it back. I dropped it a while back, and have come online to look up stuff to restore it, but none of that is working for me. I reset it by pressing "menu" and "Play" at the same time, then put it into disk mode by pressing the "ff" and "rwd" buttons together, but even in disk mode my computer is not recognizing it at all. The iPod screen says that it is in disk mode, and says it's okay to disconnect, but its not giving me the option to restore when I connect it to my computer and open the iPod updater.
It also gives me the file folder w/ an exclamation point whenever i don't put it into disk mode. And the few times that my computer does pick up something the iPod updater flashes a message that says "Can't Mount iPod" and then the updater manually closes itself. Anyone know what to do?
    Thanks
20GB with Dock Connector   Windows XP

For "Cant mount iPod" - please try the following first
    Click on Start=>Control Panel=>Admin Tools=>Computer Management=>Disk Management
-- Right-Click on the iPod and select “change drive letter”
-- Choose something further along in the alphabet that is unused (Usually, “M”, “N”, “O” or something similar)
    -- Safely eject the iPod
    -- Reboot the PC
If still cant solve it then
The Sad iPods icon, clicking sound or folder with an exclamation mark are the toughest problems to deal with, and must do a Restore in order to fix it. However, when your iPod is showing this icon, it is probably too late for your computer to recognize the iPod.
    1. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    2. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
    Still can't see your iPod?
Several things could keep iPod from appearing in iTunes or in the Desktop/Finder when you connect it to your PC/Mac. The most likely causes are listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the list to see if that is what's keeping iPod from appearing.
    3. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    4. Try another known-good FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    5. Try another known-good FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    6. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    7. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. We've found that in many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
There are also some cases being reported that some unrecognized iPod being able to be erased with Linux, then reconnect the iPod with the original computer and do a Restore there.
    8. Try to do an Erase (Disk Utility) on a Mac computer or a format with a PC (Disk Management tool) but ensure you choose the right Drive (your iPod not your Hard Disk of your computer). You may need to plug and unplug your iPod with the computer for several attempts, and switching around Format and Restore, and hope out of sudden, it will get recognized.
    9. Diagnostic mode solution – which I copied from a thread of a post from thinktwice
“Then I cam across this special Diganostics Mode that you can get to by resetting and then while the Apple is showing pressing the Select and backwards keys simultaneously. It bring up and weird Diagnostic utility witha a abunch of tests. Here is what I did
    - I tried the 5in1 test and got and error on Firewire.
    - I did the HDD R/W and surprisingly it passed.
    - I went on to the HDD scan. This supposedly tkaes acouple of minute so I waited. I think 4-5 dots appeared then nothing. The iPod started to get hot. THe disk was spinning away. After a while the battery got very low. THis test chews up the battery. So I escaped out by resetting and went to connect it to a power source.
My USB was dangling out of my computer and I was too lazy to get the Firewire AC adapter thing going so I connected expecting the whole lockup thing with iTunes. Surprise. IT was recognized immediately and has been working like a champ. So go figure.
Details on Diag mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/index.shtml
    10. Let me ask you a question, if an iPod with no iPod software with it. When your connect it with a computer, what would happen?
Yeah, the computer will treat it as a fresh external hard disk, which will get force mounted, the computer will ask you to format the iPod. It does not really matter the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted iPod software on the iPod, after that the computer will recognize it.
Once it has been completed, eject your iPod, open the iPod updater and interestingly, you will able to do the Restore this time.
Base on the above, that's why I suggest Windows users who experience trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac machine or vice versa. PC computer will not recognize a Mac formatted iPod, but it will get mounted in an attempt to format your iPod.
    11. Put your iPod in disk mode and plug with a computer, and have a boot of your computer using the Mac OS or XP startup disks, hope that your iPod will be seen on Mac's Disk utility and allow you to do a Erase there. Or, under the XP, you will be able to find your iPod there for you to do a Restore.
But, if none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired. You can arrange for service at the iPod Service Website.
I have just read an interesting solution about the Sad iPod, it does make sense but the warranty will be waived once you open the iPod, I would not do it myself as I am not good on doing this

  • Ipod not being recognized

I have an ipod touch second gen. and I downloaded itunes v.10 2 weeks ago I think, and when I plugged my ipod in, it said it was being recognized as a camera and I disconnected it. Now whenever I plug it in, it's not recognized anywhere on my computer. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing itunes and I plugged it in to my brothers computer (he has v.10 too) and it worked? I did a software update hoping it would fix my problem, but still nothing. Help please?

Connect your ipod. When you go to My Computer and look for Devices with Removal Storage. Do you see your device?
If not, go to [iPod not recognized and Windows Device Manager is empty|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1496].
If it is there go to [iPod not recognized in 'My Computer' and in iTunes for Windows|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1496]

  • IPod not being "recognized" by Windows XP

So I just got my 30GB iPod Video and I installed all the software and stuff. I hooked the USB cable up, but each time windows says "USB Device not Recognized". I looked at the message and it says something about a driver not being installed for the device. If anyone could help me I would love it!!! I've done EVERYTHING!!!

I hope this will help. I had installed my 5th Gen. 30 Gig iPod on my computer which originally only had 1.1 USB ports on it at that time, and it did sync and work, but I wanted to be able to sync faster. So, I had a 2.0 USB card installed. This card would not recognize my iPod at all. I reinstalled iTunes and iPod software thinking that would help, but nothing helped the 2.0 card simply would not work with the iPod.
So, I went to the iPod search site and did a search to find approved 2.0 usb cards. That yeilded several pages of approved USB cards. I took this list to my computer guru, they ordered me one of the approved cards, took out the first "generic usb 2.0" card they had installed and put in the new on. Guess what, it immediately worked when I plugged in my iPod!!! It copied 59.2 minutes worth of music to the iPod in less than 10 seconds! I am amazed how much faster it is.
I say all of this to say that your computer's USB card may not be compatible with your iPod. If not, change out the card with one that is. I hope you will have the same success I had. What a difference it makes! Good luck.

  • Ipod not being recognized by windows computer

I have a video Ipod and a older nonclick wheel type Ipod. Neither one will connect to my computer. Although last week they connected without any problem. • Ipod not being recognized by comp or itunes.

its not being recognize and the prob is not the usb port itself(flashdrives, cameras, ect will work) the comp is a dell and when i do connect it just charges and stuff no actually activity with the comp

I may have found the problem - a corrupted piece of music.
Background: My wife's iPod had been giving me fits. Tried syncing it at home and also here on my work computer with the same results...the dreaded I/O error message. It was still under warranty so I sent back to Apple - they returned it citing no problems with the device. When I then tried to sync again same results.
With iTunes off and the iPod connected, I had to reformat the iPod using My Computer>right click Manage>then click on Disk Management. When the iPod shows up in the right hand screen, right click on it and then format. (This will delete everything on the device but if you cant read it what good is it anyway?) You will get a message that the format cannot be completed. Ignore this message. Disconnect the Ipod.
With the iPod disconnected, start iTunes. Break your library up into separate playlists like genre, artist, whatever, just so you have it broken up into smaller groups. When you sync later your going to want to sync one playlist at a time until you find the offending group. When finished, leave iTunes running then go ahead and connect your iPod. iTunes will tell you it has found an iPod in recovery mode. Go ahead and restore. When completed, your iPod should restart and be recognized by iTunes. If it does not, physically unplug it then replug it. Do not sync your entire library. Sync only one playlist - then check your iPod. Continue until you find the playlist upon which the I/O error rears its ugly head. Make note of which one that is...then start over with the whole process again.
This may not work for everyone and it sure is a **** of a lot of trouble. ABBA seems to be the culprit on this one and it is a legit mp3 rip of something we own.

  • Ipod not being recognized...Windows XP Mass Storage Problem

I'm like many of you who installed the new Itunes 7 and is having the same connection problems. My 30g video Ipod will not be recognized on my laptop and itunes. I believe my usb cord is working properly because when I connect my ipod into the laptop it charges.
I've tried everything that was said on this forum: the five r's, disk mode, updating drivers, etc.
But I was wondering: I have the iCarPlay FM Transmitter Has anyone noticed, that when they connect their ipod into it, a error pops up on the screen: "USB Connection and Firmwire are not compatible"...something along that line. And now when I connect my ipod, the sound is absoultely terrible! It only comes out of one speaker in my car. My friend owns an ipod nano and hers works perfectly with my transmitter.
Now my other question: I don't see my ipod in the device manager...but I do see is Mass Storage Controller highlighted with a big yellow exclamtion triangle. I click on it and try to install from the ipod cd and nothing happens, I can't even uninstall it. Do you think that's my ipod not working?
Also, I've tried connecting my ipod to my two computer desktops and it's not recognized either and I also tried connecting my ipod to my sister's Mac computer and nothing happens.
Any other suggestions to help my ipod? When the heck is Apple going to respond with a new update?
I should of just bought the Zune instead of the iPod!
Dell Inspiron 700m   Windows XP   laptop

Follow the instructions in this link: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305136 Even if there are no updates available, follow the instructions to reload your USB driver. After that, go into Device Manager, right click on your iPod and reformat it (FAT32). After this go into iTunes and Restore your iPod.
"I should of just bought the Zune instead of the iPod!"
I know you are frustrated, but statements like this don't exactly motivate others here to help you. And if you think that would solve your problem, go to the Zune discussion groups.

  • Malfunctioning iPod, not being recognized by the computer. Why?

Ok, yesterday I wanted to update my iPod so I plugged it in and I got an error message about my USB malfunctioning and then my ipod was frozen on "do not disconnect". I unfroze it and tried again. Same thing. Then I changed ports and same problem. I kept unfreezing and got rid of the songs I added thinking they might be messing it up. I plugged it in and I thought it was fine. When I checked it the next day when I wanted to use it all my songs were gone. I plugged it back in, restored the iPod settings and it still doesn't recognize it. Its telling me "iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod '__ iPod'. Go to the summary tab in iPod preferences to restore settings it the factory settings." It won't let me restore, though because of an unknown error. What is the problem and how do I fix it?

  • Ipod not being recognized by itunes--was a few weeks ago--have not done 1.1

hi. i have not installed the 1.10.2006 update as i've seen lots of people have problems with that on these boards. however, today when i tried to sync my ipod, the usb port did not recognize it was there and itunes was not automatically pulled up. so i could not update my music, nor could i do the new firmware install if i wanted to. those programs are not recgonizing that the ipod is plugged in.
i've tried to reinstall itunes, that didn't help. tried to get all the windows updates, but ms couldn't verify my os is valid (it totally is). i've reset my ipod several times and would restore it, excpet the updater doesn't recognize it's plugged in. the battery is fully charged.
i've also had problems with the ipod not turning on or off, or skipping 4+ songs when i try to just skip ahead one.
not sure what the deal is, and i'd appreciate any help.
    thanks.

    Hi.
You could try to restore it once more. Do you use the same computer all of the time? Do you manually sync music, or automatically sync?
I guess you are running Windows, so iTunes could have hidden some files which didn't delete when you first uninstalled. Take a look at this:
    http://zardozz.com/zz/2008/04/how-to-completely-uninstall-and-remove-all-traces- of-itunes.html
If you do this, after you have re-installed, you could then try the disk mode if it doesn't connect.
