IPod not charging or showing up with USB

Hi,
I recently moved over from WinXP to using a Mac Pro w/ Mac OS X 10.5.2 Leopard and now I cannot connect or charge my iPod at all with it. USB hard drives and USB memory sticks show up just fine but when I plug my iPod touch (32gb) in its like nothing at all has happened? The iPod just stays on standby, it doesn't start to charge and my Mac and iTunes don't respond in anyway.
I have the latest iTunes 8.0.1 and have no idea what's going on?!

Hey Rob,
Unlike some other iPods the iPod touch does not get formatted for Mac OS or Windows.
What version of iTunes is running on your Mac? Is there a reason you haven't updated to 10.5.5? Just click the Apple, in the top left corner> Software Update.
Make sure the iPod touch is directly connected to the Mac with the cable it came with. Try the tips in this article, to verify this is not being caused by a USB connection issue. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1286

my ipod shows a battery sign with a lightning bolt on a black background on the far left of the battery. however, it doesnt actually seem to be charging (the battery never fills up). also i am unabble to get the ipod to turn on/respond when i press any buttons. also it it not showing in itunes when i plug it in. is my ipod in a coma, or worse; dead??? please help- it's new!

iPods need less power to charge them (their wall charger is half the power of the iPad's, 5W as opposed to 10W), so are more likely to charge via USB

Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

No it doesn't. Sometimes it make a sound that it should when connecting but that is it. Never actually charges or syncs. And it is a brand new cord.

Have you tried plugging the iPod in with a different USB sync cable to verify the issue is not with the cable? It might not also hurt to connect it to another USB port as well.
Otherwise, try manually placing the iPod into Disk Mode and then connecting it to your PC.

Charge it with the supplied power brick plugged into the wall.
Most USB ports don't put out enough power for the iPad so the best way is plugged into the wall.

IPod Classic not charging or showing in coputer devices/iTunes

When I connect my iPod classic (120Gb) to my laptop it no longer shows under the computers devices.
The screen of the iPod shows "Charging. Please wait...". However, it does not charge. I have tried connecting the iPod to other computers to charge and with other USB connectors but there is still no difference. HELP!!

And welcome to Apple Discussions!
So you have tried using a different USB cable as well as plugging the iPod into different USB ports on your computer? Have you tried resetting your iPod with it connected to your computer? To do this, toggle the hold switch on and off, then press and hold the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together until the Apple logo appears. Try more than once if need be.
Otherwise, have you considered uninstalling iTunes and all Apple software on your system and starting from scratch? Here are instructions if need be.

Does it appear in "My Computer" at least as a mounted drive? If so, try reformatting it using the tools provided by windows?

IPod will not charge or show up in iTunes

My iPod will not charge when I connect it to my computer through the USB cable. It does not show up on iTunes. Nothing comes up on the iPod screen at all. The iPod is completely dead. I have tried pressing the menu and center button at the same time. I have tried toggling the hold button. I have tried every combination. It is an old iPod (3 or 4 years at least) 80gb video. I have tried charging on another computer. It seems to only stop working like this if the battery dies completely.
Is there another solution to this besides the menu/center button solution?

This is the exact same problem I have. The only thing that works for me is to charge it on an old ihome alarm clock. I bought the alarm clock at the same time as the ipod, and I haven't tried it on a newer ihome device. Once my ipod is totally dead, thats the only thing that will work. I even took it to the apple store and they told me all they could do was give me 10% off a new ipod and "recycle" mine. Before you do that, I would really recommend trying to charge it on an ihome or similar device. Not enough power in car with USB to charge z10 but will charge bold and Q10

My in car USB shows the symbol that there is insufficient power to charge my z10 but when I plug in a Blackberry bold or a Q10 both indicate that they are charging. The Z10 will charge properly when I plug it into a wall socket.
Is there a way to get the z10 charging properly in the car as well?

I faced the same issue. My guess would be that Z10 needs a more genuine (in terms of power) car charger than other phones.
However if we ignore the error, charging does happen but with delay compared to wall mount charging.
Hoping to some alternative inputs from the experts.

After leaving the Nano to charge for a minimum of of 30 minutes, try to reset it by pressing and holding both the Select/Center and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
You'll also want to make sure the hold switch is not in the ON position.
