IPod not found by computer or iTunes

about a month ago my iPod nano (3rd gen) just stoppoed working out of know where, and then all of sudden it came back on about two weeks later. Ever since then it has not showed up in iTunes or as a device on my computer.

I am no expert but I think many of the problems of getting the Ipods to talk to PCs (especially XP and Dell machines) is may br due to the problem that apparently some PCs can only recognise one USB2 device at a time (eg Dell 5100 with XP) - apparently most USB devices are USB1! It was only by unplugging my USB2 wireless connetcion that my Ipod started to work, before I tried this all I kept getting was 'Unknown device'. Looks like some printers are also USB2 so unplugging it solves the problem. I must confess it is a complete mess as 1000's are on forums reporting the same problem. I guess Microsoft will blame Apple who will blame the PC makers and its us who suffer.....

  • Ipod not recognized by computer or itunes GETTING FRUSTRATED

My ipod nano 3rd gen. is not being recognized by my computer. Everything worked fine, then plugged it in to my laptop one day and all I might get are 3 beeps, but nowhere in my computer is it shown that it is there. Ii have tried reinstalling itunes, the "5 R's", rebooting my computer, nothing is working. I am finding more and more posts of people having this trouble, and nowhere have I found that apple has actually offered a solution. Does any one have any ideas on how to fix this? It would really be nice to be able to sync and charge my ipod again.
Thanks for any help you could offer.

  • IPod not recognized by computer or iTunes

So, this seems to be a common problem. When I connect my iPod to my computer, the computer nor iTunes recognize the laptop. I've tried connectivity tests and it can't detect the iPod. However, the USB port does recognize other devices. I've tried the 5 R's Apple suggests. I've tried other methods from changing registry values to loading older version of iTunes to no avail. When I run the diagnostic tests, here's what I get:
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)

I have kind of the same problem with my 60gb ipod with colour display.
everything was working fine up until last sunday when i plugged into my laptop and I got the 'folder with exclamation mark' icon
i reset it and put it into disk mode but when i connect it to my laptop it doesnt turn up on itunes or windows. occasionally it will appear then disappear again so i can't restore it to factory settings.
i did manage to get it to appear in itunes and click on the restore button but i got the message that it couldnt be restored and there was a problem with the 'firmware' but before i could try anything else it disappeard from itunes again.
i have been told that the problem may be with my USB cable so i will buy another one at the weekend but if that doesnt work does anyone else have any ideas as i have tried nearly everything.

  • HT1459 ipod not recognized by computer or itunes, in recovery mode

    Hi,
My problems started when I wanted to install and use "NOOK" my OS of 4.3.3.1? was said to not be compatible with the addon!
I was trying to add it via wifi because my computers kept failing to recognize or connect to it, neither did itunes.
I then wanted to upgrade the os to 5, which is the most current, I think.
My computers and itunes failed to recognize the ipod touch.
I kept trying and finally tried a system restore. That did not work either. I tried other machines, that also did not work.
I then reinstalled the operating system on my main system and installed itunes then connected my ipod touch version 2 i think.
The computer and itunes still failed to recognize it.
I then tried to do a factory reset, this erased the ipod and set it to an itunes symbol with the connection plug and wire showing as an image.
Now it is still not recognized and I cannot get it to work normally.
Is there a way to get it functional again?
Thank you for your time and assistance.

  • IPod not recognized on computer or itunes

I've read every article and FAQ on this site and have completed the 5 R's and I still cannot get iTunes or my computer to recognize my iPod. I have a 10G touch wheel that, with the exception of horrible battery life, has worked well for the past 2+ years. But now, whenever I connect iPod to my computer, the battery begins charging and nothing else. Can anyone help? I'm pretty frustrated.
    Dell   Windows XP

I had the same trouble and spent about an hour on the phone with Apple support before I discovered my own solution. My computer is used in a network environment, and the F drive letter was already assigned. I disconnected F drive, then plugged in my iPod - problem solved. Seems the iPod wanted F drive. Though my computer recognized the iPod in Device Manager and the system tray, it was not being displayed in My Computer or iTunes.
I discovered this solution when I logged on to the computer with a local account instead of using the roaming profile used at my work place. That gave me the clue that iPod was looking for F drive. Once I freed up F drive, my iPod was happy.
    I hope this information helps.

  • IPOD not recognized my computer/updater/itunes

My IPOD was working fine until it froze. I went through the 5 Rs. It resulted in none of my music showing up on my IPOD (however the memory indicates that my music is still on the IPOS). ITUNES/Updater/My Computer do not recognize my IPOD. However my computer acknowledges the hardware when plugged in. Therefore I cannot restore it either. I have also tried it on a friends computer with the same IPOD and it does not work either. I have a 5G 30GB IPOD and have windows XP.

try to uninstall everything related to the ipod (updater, itunes, etc), then reinstall it
also before plug the ipod to the pc, reset it

  • Ipod not recognized by computer or itunes or anything!

just got a new ipod after i lost my old mini and when i plug my ipod into my computer using a 2.0 USB port it isnt recognized by my computer or my itunes , it doesnt even make the connection noise. My friends ipods are recognized by my computer and itunes. How do i make it work?

cant do any of the things in that artical because its a new ipod so i cant re anything to it.
Have you at least tried the Five R's listed there?
    Another possibility.
Since your friend has connected their iPod to your computer before (presuming that it's on manual update in iTunes), this could be causing drive letter confusion on your computer.
In this case, try connecting your friend's iPod to your computer, and re-assigning the drive letter of the iPod:
Log off of any other users on your computer (and disconnect any iPods that are currently connected to your computer, as well)
Then, put the iPod into Disk Mode, then follow these steps:
    1 - Don't plug in your friend's iPod yet.
2 - Go to "START -> Control Panel -> Admin Tools (if you don't see this, click on "classic view" button on the left panel) -> Computer Management."
3 - Click on the "Disk Management" button in the left panel area.
4 - Now, with "Computer Management" and Control Panel windows opened, connect the iPod.
5 - Right-click on the iPod's listing there (after a few moments when it gets recognized in this drive window), and click on "Change Drive letter and Paths". Then the "Change..." button.
Here's what it should look like:
Assign this iPod the letter "M" "N", "O" or the like (further along in the alphabet).

  • IPod not recognized by Computer or iTunes (but it used to be)

Okay, I have an iPod, I had problems, and I fixed them, but what's making me mad is that my grandpa got one, and he's having the exact same problems and they can't be fixed in the same way. So here's what's happening:
    iTunes doesn't recognize the iPod,
it doesn't appear at all in "My Computer,"
but when you go to "Safely Remove Hardware" it comes up there.
Tried resetting the iPod; restarting the computer, iPod plugged in, iPod unplugged; downloaded iTunes version 7; did a million things I found in the forums; there's nothing wrong with my OS or USB ports (yes they're 2.0), so what do I do now?

I'm having the same problem...iPod doesn't appear in iTunes and it isn't recognized by PC.Tried all 5 problem solvers with no luck. My iPod shows a sad face. It somehow went into an accessories test and went thru a bunch of downloads and option all on it's own?? Then it said - No USB cable detedted......then another bunch of accessories which appeared to fine.....then- Please plug FW, LCD ID:2, FWPWR:0
Does anyone a a clue what this is all about and why it won't appear in iTunes????

  • Ipod not recognized by computer or itunes.!please help..been trying all day

i did 4 of the 5 R's because when i tried to restore my ipod the ipod updater 2006-03-23 wont even update because it thinks my ipod isnt plugged in. what can i do.

I have a very simular issue. I had my 5G iPod replaced by apple and i'm very scared it may happen again. I had the 5G for 2 weeks when iTunes would take a long time to recognize it. XP MCE 2205 will recognize it immediately, but iTunes does not start automatically nor does it recognize it if i start it. Then, i got that folder with exclamation icon, this is the reason they replaced it. I got the new one today, and connected it to my USB 2.0 port as i did before. Has been working fine. All of the sudden, iTunes is not recognizing it again. Restarted the computer and then iTunes decided to recognize it, and then iTunes locked up. I waited, then i got the "long write failed" error in windows. That scared me. I had to kill iTunes. Restarted my computer while removing the 5G from the USB. Once the computer was logged on, i connected the 5G to the onboard USB1.1 and... so far so good. The USB2.0 is a 4 port PCI card. ???? Does that have anything to do with my problems? Maybe not!

  • Ipod not seen on computer or iTunes, and has no icon while loading...

my iPod Video 30GB has worked fine on my PC since I got it, and everytime I plugged it into my PC, the iPod screen displayed the message "Do not disconnect the USB cable". Just some few days ago, the message was not displayed at all, and the iPod was not seen on iTuned or on My Computer. The iPod still gets recharged, but it does not show up, and does not display the "Do not disconnect USB cable". I have connected the iPod on my a mac and it worked perfectly fine even though my iPod is Windows Formatted. But it just does not work on the pc anymore. please help! • Ipod not detected by computer or itunes

    Hi all,
I have two older ipod classics (from before they were called classic!), the are suddenly no longer findable on any of my computers.   One is a 30gig, and easily 5 years old.  The other is an 80 gig that is probably 4 years.   Both play thru stereo and car radio with no problems, and can take a charge thru a USB cord.  My 180 gig (about 2 years old), is still recognized by computers, as are an original! shuffle and and elderly 4 gig nano.     The primary computer is an iMac, OS X 10.6.4 (reloading snow leopard, but thats another story), iTunes 10.4.   However, I've also tried to connect these to a Macbook OS 10.6.7 and a Macbook Pro 10.6.7, both less than a year old,  as well as a 4 year old macbook running 10.5.8 and iTunes  10.1.1.   I've tried several usb cords, and no joy there.    These computers all see the 180 gig, as well as the shuffle and nano, but not the other two.    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Zeph

I think the trouble-shooting you describe has ruled out a bad USB docking cable, and a problem on the USB port.  And since it previously worked with this computer, it's not some incompatibility with software or hardware.  Even if there was a software (OS or iTunes) related problem, the shuffle should still charge when connected.
So, if it's not software, the docking cable, or the USB port, the cause is probably a problem on the shuffle (such as the logic board or battery).  Since it is less than one-year from purchase date, you should have it checked under warranty.  If you have an Apple Store nearby, you can make a reservation at the Genius Bar on the store's web page
    https://www.apple.com/retail/
and take it there.  Otherwise, you can contact Apple's tech support using the Contact Us link at the bottom right corner of this web page.

  • Ipod not recognised by computer or itunes...

My ipod nano has been working fine now for 7 months until a couple of days ago... the problem is that when i plug my ipod into the computer it doesnt get read by my computer or by itunes...there is no "do not disconnect" screen and there is no usb actually read at all..it comes up with a little charging icon (the lightning on the battery) yet it does not charge...
i have been reading several of these posts and by the looks of it it is a very common problem that hasnt been completely fixed...ppl are spending hours trying to reconfigure their computers, resetting the ipod and itunes, fiddling around with their usb ports to no avail...
the strange thing is that my brother has an ipod nano aswell which works perfectly fine on all of our computers and mine wont even read... therefor it cant be a problem with my computer because his one has no problems!
i have none of my songs on my computer at the moment because it was recently reformatted so the only copy of my music i have is on my ipod and cds.. id prefer not to reset my ipod but it looks like i might have to to get this sorted out...
pls help if u think u know what might be wrong...
    xo steph

The solution 2 ur problem is the ipod 5R's . u will need 2 reset ur ipod and if possble reinstall de ipod and itunes softwares. but first u will need 2 try reseting ur ipod , it will not delet the songs on ur ipod, it refreshes ur ipod. try that first. move de hold button near de earphone hole. it has a red sign. move that switch back and forth about three times and press de select button (middle ) and the menu button all at de same time , then hold dem both until u see de apple logo appears (apple sign). the release all buttons, ur ipod is reset. if this work then do the 5R's.to know wat de 5R's are go to apple.com and u will see it at de left hand corner of ur screen. it is five steps that will correct any problems u r having with ur ipod. it should correct them. it involve resetting ur ipod, restarting ur computer, reinstalling ur ipod and itunes softwares and runing de updator files, and all that. try it, if that dont work it means u will have 2 send the ipod 4 repairs.

  • Ipod not recognized by computer or itunes when not in disk mode

My ipod nano 6th gen. recently has stopped working.  I am able to charge it for a short amount of time but have to reset the ipod everytime I go to turn it on.  I wanted to update the software but when I plug it into my comp that I have previously updated this ipod on, it says that the device is not recognized.  I followed steps on the support page and discovered that the ipod is recognized as a device and as a ipod in disk mode but when I reset the ipod back to normal mode it is once again not recognized.  I don't have a problem with my comp or itunes when I connect my iphone or ipod touch so I'm trying to figure out how to get the ipod to work.  any suggestions.

  • Ipod not found in windows or itunes

I just bought an 30 gig ipod a couple days ago, but whenever I try to plug it into the computer nothing happens. It is in one of the main USB ports in the back of my case, and i've tried every one of them, ive done the 5 R's , and everything else that the FAQ said. Is it a problem with iTunes or is it my computer in general? It didnt come with a CD so i couldnt use that. Any ideas? heres the diagnostic

Same for me but intermittent. Plug in ipod (Brand new 80gb 5.5 Gen), Dell PC bleeps but Itunes doens't recognise it. Go through all the fixes, reboot etc. Plug in ipod and PC recognises it but gives the "iPod corrupt" error and tries unsucessfully to restore...as documented elsewhere in this discussion forum
Complain to Apple...they try to fix over phone with no success and then replace the iPod as faulty. Wait a week, new iPod turns up....plug it in and guess what "iPod corrupt" and tries to restore...fails and ejects the iPod, leaving it in recovery (i.e. screwed up) mode. The iPod now says "ipod needs restoring, connect to your computer". Thanks Apple.
I have heared a rumour that swapping our the USB card may help, so I'm going to try that this evening, plus disabling norton etc which apparently can screw up the restore process. If this doesn't work, myself and Applecare are going to be having a tense conversation on Saturday morning as they have shipped me another faulty iPod. I was going to replace my Dell with an iMac but now having second thoughts.....
