IPod not mounting or doing anything

I have a 30gb ipod photo with color display. The thing stopped turning on, won't mount to my mac (ibook G4), and the only thing it displays is the www.apple.com/support thing. I have only had this iPod for about 2 years and before this I had the U2 addition that gave me the 1418 error (which basically says its shot). I can't even restore this iPod any ideas?

if still cant solve the problem, have a read the following
Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
Intermediate Level
A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
For Mac computer
1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=501330&tstart=0
C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
Tips
a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

Advance Level
A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
Last Resort Level
1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote

I'm trying to acess my iDisc and it's not working.  Message pops up that says "iDisc not mounted", what does this mean?  I can no longer download music or movies from itunes also, because it says startup disc is full.  I've tried to delete items from my computer, still not enough room.  I don't know what to do here.  Maybe I accidentally deleted the iDisc???  Also, the Mobile Me thing isn't working either...it says "an error was returned from the server. check back later."  Guurrrrhhhh!  Somebody please help me....

You need a bigger Hard Drive, not More Memory (well, you may need that too but it has nothing to do with this problem)
Buy and fit a bigger hard drive, post back if you need help with that.

  • My newly bought i pad is not letting me doing anything. it is saying 'this ipad hasn't been backed up. backups happen when this ipad is plugged in, locked, and connected to wifi'. i have tried to powered off by pressing the top right hand button

my newly bought i pad 4(4gs), ratina display, is not letting me doing anything. it is saying 'this ipad hasn't been backed up. backups happen when this ipad is plugged in, locked, and connected to wifi'. i have tried to powered off by pressing the top right hand button till the red slide comes up. but it is not sliding to the right. could anyone help me out??

Locked, refers to the device being plugged in with "slide to unlock" being displayed on the screen.  To recap - your device will automatically back up to icloud when it is connected to power, the screen is locked, and it is connected to a wifi network.
-Wifi is required to limit impact on your data plan.
-Power is to ensure the device has sufficient power to perform the backup.
-Screen lock - to make sure the device is not in use - which could slow or stop the backup.
The initial backup may take some time.  Plug it in to the wall before bed, and make sure it is connected to your wifi network.  The backup SHOULD be completed when you wake up in the morning.
    Hope this helps.

  • Ipod not mounting

    hi all
I have a 2nd gen ipod and i also ordered the new one.
anyway my second gen ipod does not mount via firewire (its only firewire)
on my dual 2.7 power mac but it mounts on all my other macs.
It used to work with no problem but for some reason now it does not. Any ideas.
I tried using software such as mount me i also tried to see if it shows up in disk utility and unix but neither see it.
    tried all ports.
Lacie and g-raid drives work fine
Also the ipod screen says that its ok to disconnect when i connect it.
Some one heard anything like this.

I'm bumping this topic, because I have an almost identical issue.
My 3G stopped mounting and showing up in iTunes lately too. This behavior seems to have coincided with installing iTunes 6.0, but not 100% sure about that. I have yet to find a decent way to revert iTunes, so no way to say if that's the culprit. The device mounts fine on the USB port and it also mounts on my Powerbook (FW port) with the same cable. Also, my wife's mini shows the same behavior on this computer.
The firewire port seems to be functioning fine, since my external drive mounts and functions with no problem. My camera also works fine. Also, the ipod charges when connected, so I know the power is there. Also, the ipod shows up in the Firewire section of the System Profiler when it's connected.
I even went so far as to purchase an Adaptec firewire PCI card, but it does the exact same thing.
The problem computer is a dual 1.42GHz mirrored door mac.
Here are some of the things I've tried:
    - Several ipod resets
    - Performed restore of the ipod, via USB
    - Disk mode
    - New firewire card
    - Disconnect all FW devices, except the ipod
    - Apple's firewire troubleshooting recommendations (power off, etc.)
    - Created new user
    - Disk Utility (does not see the ipod via firewire)
    - Deleted the com.apple.ipod.plist
    - Performed ipod FW diagnostics (passed)
The battery on this 3g is not taking much of a charge any more. That's not an issue for me, since I usually have it plugged into my car cradle, but I'm thinking this might be part of my problem.
Has anyone had similar issues when their battery was weak?
Anyone had a similar problem after installing iTunes 6?
I think either OSX or iTunes is the culprit here. Anyway, I'm not quite ready to give up the ghost on this 3G -- I like it...

  • IPod not mounting/locking up

I recently reformatted my iPod to work with Windoze computers, and all seemed to be good, until today. I was importing 120 photos, and it told me that the import was complete (imported 120 of 120). Before further verifying, I told it to erase the card. Well, when I went to check the photos on the iPod, there were no rolls listed. I then rebooted the iPod, and now, the roll is listed, but only with 64 photos, supposedly. I say supposedly because I only have the options to either delete the roll or cancel. I can not veiw the photos. To further my problems, I can not get the iPod to mount to my friend`s computer. It starts, and then gives a check mark saying OK to Disconnect. Well, it locks up there. I disconnect it an nothing every happens.
Anyhow, I am now to the point of hoping I can find a way on Windoze to get my photos off of my card. I have done nothing more to off of my card. I have done nothing more to the card since the iPod erased it. So, I am hoping there is a way I can do this.

If the iPod does not have a feature for deleting cards, then how in the world did I do it! I guess I didn't select "erase card" and I suppose all of my photos are just tricking me into thinking I didn't delete them?
Funny that the iPod doesn't have rolls. I guess again my photos are playing tricks with me? What is this menu telling me?
    Import Photos
    Roll 1 (64)
Last time I used the iPod and the camera connector (when the iPod was still Mac formatted), I guess the three rolls were not really there?
When trying to connect the iPod to the Windoze computer (some sort of HP Compaq thing), I get the "Do Not Disconnect" display and it goes dark (normal behavior), then it blinks, the display lights up, I get the menu, and it may or may not repeat this upto six times. Then, the iPod locks up. During this process, the iPod occasionally shows up as E: Removeable drive. However, in the end, it is just not there.
iTunes is not on the computer, but that is irrelevant. I am just trying to use the iPod as a storage drive for my photos until I can get back to the states to my Mac, but it is just not working.

  • Ipod wont mount/format does nothing/ hd dead?

    HI
I own a 3g ipod 15gb. It had been working fine. A week ago, I put it to sleep, and when it woke up it kerp flashing the broken folder icon and then reseting. I cound not mount it. By pressing the foreward button, I would get into disk mode.
Connecting to a computer got it to say
"disk mode-do not disconnect" but it would not mount/ appear in disk utility. Somehow, I got it to finally work and formatted and reset the firmware on a friends windows comp. It worked fine once, then the same thing happened. After taking it off my mac, it will say "ok to disconnect" and freezes there
    anyone have a sugestion?
ps...I got it replaced a month ago in warrenty, but now that is up. Can I still send it back (warranty on the replacement?) thanx

  • Internal boot drive not mounted -- Mac does not restart

    Hi everyone,
    I've got a problem with my  2013 MacBookPro 13" with OS X 10.10 Yosemite.
It seems that somethings wrong with my internal boot drive. I wanted to start my Mac but the grey progress line stopped at about the half and didn't continue. I tried to boot in secured mode --> not possible. I loaded recovery mode and wanted to check and repair disk utilities but I cannot hit those buttons because my drive is not mounted and cannot be mounted. I also tried to connect my Mac via Firewire with another Mac in Target Disk Mode --> Drive could not be mounted. Finally I tried to mount my drive on a Windows and Linux computer --> not mounted :-(
Is there another possibility to mount my drive or to access my data somehow? The thing is that I do not have a backup and that is why I need to access my data and store them somewhere prior being able to do a clean reinstall of my Mac.
    Thank you for your support.
    Markus

Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and try to repair the disk and disk permissions. If you're able to reboot normally and see that works.
If not reboot into the Recovery volume and reinstall the system.
If you can't boot into the Recovery volume mamau08 may be right in that the drive has failed.

  • Trying to get Pics off Ipod-Not mounting on New Computer

So my laptop got stolen...6 years worth of pics - Gone. They stole my backup drive too. Bummer. Good news is they didn't get my 5th gen 80g Video iPod which has my photo library on it. While waiting for my new laptop, I've set up as a new user on my wife's new white MacBook and plugged in the ipod to see if I can put it into disk mode and see if those photos are even full res or not (3,500 photos-4gig...should be, right? Not sure how I synced it before, but 4gig tells me there's gotta be some resolution there.)
Plugged the iPod in with the USB2...nothing. Didn't show up in iTunes, nor in finder. This is a brand new iTunes with nothing in it (just using this user acct/laptop as a temp) and it's never met this iPod... but then again, that's the same deal when I plug in and charge my iPhone up (don't sync it, obviously) yet it shows up in iTunes and I get the device window with all the info, color coded memory allocation, sync prefs, music, photo, info tabs..etc...but when I do the same with this iPod, no dice.
So since I could do nothing, I had to wince and unplug it and soft reset to get the frozen "Do Not Disconnect" screen off, and about had a heart attack doing so since it's the ONLY copy of my pics and music.
Anyone know why this thing isn't mounting? I also read somewhere that you can put the iPod into disc mode with a select button/click wheel sequence, so maybe I don't even need it to show up in iTunes?
Also, anyone know a good pic recovery program if that doesn't work?
    Thanks in advance.
    Derrick

Sorry to hear about your computer. Let's hope the thief gets hit by a bus.
Yes there is a button press for manually entering disc mode.
    Putting iPod into disk mode.
If you copied photos to your iPod using the full resolution option, enable disk use, open your iPod in Finder, open the photos folder then open the "full resolution" folder and drag the photos out of that folder to your desktop. For enabling disk use look here.
    Disk Use.
If you only copied the photos as thumbnails, you can't do this so you'll need a program such as this one.
iPod Photo Liberator. (both Mac and Windows versions available)
Photos as thumbnails won't be of the original quality when copied back to your computer.

  • IPod Not Mounting ANYWHERE

    Hey,
There are lots of similar topica floating around where users can get their iPod to be recognised by some programmes. However, I haven't found a suitable answer as my computer won't recognise my iPod anywhere.
It's not seen by Finder, Desktop, iTunes, Disk Utility, iPod Software Updater... nothing. So I can't restore it, which I'm happy to do to get the **** thing working again - as far as my computer is concerned it simply doesn't exist.
As with many people, these problems only arose after updating to 23/3 software.
Anyone have any clue? I can't just sit around and wait until Apple decide to release another update.
    Any help much appreciated, thanks...

I was having the same problem as some of you. Disk utility could see it but trying to restore or update from ipod software didn't work at all and had no luck with iTunes, kept telling me that i need to update my iPod. Then i erased all the content with DU (don't think this is good though). S.M.A.R.T. status says 'not supported'. After it didn't want to connect or do anything anymore. Let the batteries run out and connect it again. iTunes still asking me to update my ipod.
Installed the new iTunes, maybe it had something to do with it maybe not. But when my iPod was connected quitted iTunes reopened it and the dialog came up to personalize my iPod. I'm all happy finally solved, but noppes, my iPod stopped working after the second song it was uploading, and it seems i have to let the batteries run out again ...
    I'll keep you posted.

  • IPod not being recognized by anything? This may be the FIX.

Have you seen this during install? (If not read anyway)
"usb mass storage device - an error occured during the installation of this device - the data is invalid"
You may or may not be aware of this problem. I will explain how to check and see.
Go to device manager (start menu, right click on my computer, Click manage. Goto device manager.(on Left) Look at the Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Bottom right(expand if needed)Do you see an ipod with a yellow mark next to it? If so follow the next step.
You need to search your computer for this file USBSTOR.SYS
(Go to Start menu - search - all files and folders)
When you find it, right click on it and click copy.
Then you will need to paste it to this location. c:\windows\driver cache\i386\
Go back to Device Manager, right click on the ipod (as mentioned above)and select update driver. Click next to install automatically. It should have installed the proper driver now. Plug in your iPod and see if that did it.
Please let me know if this worked for you.

Has this helped anyone? It fixed it for me. Before I fixed it, my Shuffle was not being detected by Itunes and was shown in my computer. Check it out, it could be the fix.

  • Help!  Form is not submitting or doing anything! Any ideas?

I inherited this web application and have zero CF experience and any help is greatly appreciated!  So, the "Forgot Password" form isn't working at all.  The email is sent properly from the referring page and when you click the link it brings up the page right, however, when you fill out the form with "email address" and "username" and hit submit, it does nothing.  I'm not even getting an error.
Is there something I'm missing in the code that is wrong?  I'll post the entire code and what the URL looks like when arriving at this page.  It is still in my dev environment.
Thanks in advance for ANY help!  I'm really lost and confused.

This line is going to tell the web browser to submitt the page to the web server and have the web server run the "index.cfm" page.
The web server then expects the "index.cfm" page to expect a post request and do something with the key-value pairs contained in the header of the request.
With a rather generaic file name like "index.cfm" it is not unlikely that the index.cfm page simply ignores the form key-value pairs and does nothing with them.  But with no way to see the server side code of this index.cfm page I can not tell for sure.
