Ipod not really empty

My ipod will skip over any song or video I play but shows it is there. When I plug it into the computer, iTunes says shows the music, but says the iPod has all free space and will not play the music either. I would restore the iPod but some of the music that is on there is not backed up on my external hard drive. Is there any way to not lose everything or must I just reap what I sow. How did it happen to begin with? Thanks for any help.

  • IPod not showing empty space I know is there...

I recently used my 20gb iPod to temporarily store some files (photos and small video clips) so I could transfer them from one place to another. When I got home and copied the files to my computer, I moved the originals still on the iPod to the trash. However, my iPod's available space has not gone back to normal, though the files are no longer apparently on the iPod.
This is quite frustrating as it was over 4GB worth of data and means my iPod is now full...

I have a silly question: After you moved your photos to the trash, did you empty the trash?
If this is the case, your files are still taking up space, because the space they occupied has not been returned to the iPods' directory.
Think of your iPod as just a hard drive. Every hard drive has its own "trash".

  • Trash not really empty?

While poking around with DaisyDisk, I noticed on one of my other drives there is ~8GB of files in ~/Users/Username/.Trash. (Mostly a bunch of iTunes & song files)
The trash on the Dock is empty/not showing anything in it.
These seems to be files I deleted a long time ago.
Ran disk utility and Disk Warrior but the files are still there.
Why are they there and can I delete them myself?

I noticed on one of my other drives there is ~8GB of files in ~/Users/Username/.Trash.
Since it has a Users/Username folder it presumably has OS X installed on it, and I assume that "one of my other drives" means that you are not currently booted there.
If so, I think those items may have been put in the trash when you were booted from that volume, or from a volume that you subsequently cloned there. If the external volume is still bootable and you again boot from it, I think the "missing" items in Username/.Trash will probably reappear in the trash icon in the Dock. It should be safe to delete them in any event.
I'm not positive, but here is my take on this-
OS X keeps track of trash by username, and there are TWO hidden locations on a volume where user-specific trash can be stored.
For files in the startup volume, each user's trash goes into the .Trash directory in the home folder. But for external volumes, there is a different root-level folder called .Trashes, which contains numbered subfolders. Each user is identified by "User ID" - generally a number like 501, 502, etc, with 501 being the UID of the first user account created. The user's "external trash" goes into an appropriately numbered subfolder of the root-level .Trashes directory. You can't normally see the numbered subfolders even if hidden files are made visible, because .Trashes has write-only permissions for all. You can see the subfolders if you look with root privileges.
So If "Joe" is the username of the first user created, his UID would be 501. His local trash would go into /Users/Joe/.Trash on the startup disk, and his external trash would go into .Trashes/501 on the external volume. If he places files in several external volumes into the trash, each of those volumes will have a root-level .Trashes/501 folder holding his trash. Items in the local "startup-disk trash" and all the items in the various "external trashes" show up together in the trash icon in the Dock.
So if the external volume is bootable, and Joe had at one time started up from it, put items in the trash and didn't empty the trash, then those items would be left in /Users/Joe/.Trash, as per above. If now Joe boots from the internal HD, that folder will this time appear in the filesystem as /Volumes/volumename/Users/Joe/.Trash. The system, however, does not recognize items there as trash - it doesn't look there. It instead expects to find Joe's local trash in /Users/Joe/.Trash on the startup volume, and expects to find Joe's external trash in the various /Volumes/volumename/.Trashes/501 folders.
Anyway, that's my understanding - it may not all be correct.

This isn't achely a question it's about iPod  not iPhone but can Apple. Make all apps work with iOS 7 even when it's really old

And it's totally impractical for any OS to provide complete backwards compatibility in perpetuity. So no, Apple cannot grant your request. As WJ said, it's the developers' reponsibility to provide updates to their applications to be compatible with newer operating system releases, whatever the platform might be.

I dropped my ipod in the toilet, I haven't fixed it for months. I didn't know you could put it in rice, or to not open it right away. Is it too late to fix it, or is there a place I could bring it to? I don't want to get a new one. The ipod is really important to me, it has been with me forever, and there is important stuff on it.

There are companies that specialize in data retrieval but it's costly (probably cheaper to buy a new iPod) and more than likely as Allan said, your circuits are probably damaged beyond all hope of retrieving anything. It's worth calling Apple you maybe able to get a discount or a refurbished iPod. Can't hurt to ask, Good luck. (And in the future... no texting in the john.) Sorry, couldn't resist it.

  • Not really Badly Broken iPod Touch 5th Gen Pink 32GB

So i've got an iPod Touch 5th Gen Pink 32GB, No Warranty and it was damaged not really badly, It has a Dent backing near camera, Screen not working but it opened when it drops. So what should i do? does Apple will give you a refurbished one or something? and how much will it cost in Australia?
PS: Its not mine My friend accidently drop the iPod

Accidential damage is not covered under warranty. Apple will still replace your iPod (with a refurbished one) but you will have to pay for it.

  • Ipod Shuffle suddenly emptied after two to three days not use..

I had a problem which is my ipod shuffle suddenly emptied after two to three days i left in my room. What's the problem actually can be turn be like this since it's the first time i through it..please send me an email regarding this at [email protected] Thank You!

Okay, and thanks for re-posting your photos. I have to agree that it definitely does look like crimping and would expect any continuity checks run on it to show an open or two. That would certainly explain your symptoms, but it's not the answer for all such cases, i.e., BLD, being reported here.
I've now purchased two 'broken' Shuffle's on eBay, both coming off of M$ systems and reporting the blinkies. The first was Alive on Arrival and is still living happily on a daughter's eMac. The second was totally dead, with no reaction at all to anything I did; it's now disassembled, with no evidence of your crimping on the ribbon cable, while I mull over buying an LI battery and getting someone to solder it in for me.
In your place I'd certainly be taking my evidence to Apple and pointing out that, at the end of the day, it was just a matter of pure luck that it managed to last as long with this defect as it did. I think you should be able to convince them to give you some sort of satisfaction on this, but appreciate your desire not to go through the bother of it.

  • IPod not showing up in source list

A friend of mine wanted me to revamp her iPod with my music, erasing all that she had. Problem is, iTunes isn't seeing the iPod. My computer is. It's coming up as Mass Storage Device, and not showing up in the source list on iTunes. And when I opened the "Mass Storage Device" is was empty with the exception of some empty folders. The weird part is, iTunes opens when I plug it in. I already updated my iTunes software and reset the iPod with that menu center button hold manuver, and restarted my computer a few times. All the other troubleshooting stuff needs the iPod to show up in the source list, which it's not doing. So yeah. Any help would be nice.

Where did she originally connect her iPod??? It could be in MAC format and thus not allowing your device to see it... See this KB Article to determine the device's format:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1335
Besides the disclaimer of music sharing, once you erase the content of her device and load your iTunes data on there it will be ok. But of course the next friends device that she hops onto will undo the process that you've done above.
An iPod is really meant for a single users PC/MAC and syncronizing thier library. This causes some of the issues that you are seeing here.
Hope that helps, and I'll end on the piracy harping...

  • IPod not syncing on Windows or Mac

My sister recently purchased a Macbook. I tried using her iPod to move her songs from her PC to the new Mac (as mentioned elsewhere) but it didn't work. I ended up just wiping the whole ipod and moving songs with a USB travel drive.
When I synced up her ipod to the Macbook, I restored it to format it for Mac. The songs started to load and about 3/4 of the way through her library I received this error message.
"Attempting to copy to the disk <ipod name> failed. The disk could not be read from or written to."
I have tried using the "Disk cannot be read" troubleshooting page, but none of these suggestions help - it is a brand new Macbook - she literally bought it yesterday, and I have tried to use both a firewire and a USB cable that work fine with another ipod and computer. Disgruntled, I tried hooking up the ipod again, once again restoring it since data categorized as "other" was showing up on the iPod on the iTunes summary page. Once again, a few songs in we got another error message.
"The iPod <name> cannot be synced. The disk could not be read from or written to."
I have restored the iPod on the Macbook three times now. Each time, it goes through restore, and then when it is syncing with the music library it gives the error message as above, iTunes freezes and I have to either forcequit or manually remove the ipod.
Giving up, I figured I'd just load the songs onto the iPod from the PC. So I reformated/restored for Windows and synced up the iPod. The first error message I got was:
"The drive is not ready for use; its door may be open. Please check drive F: and make sure that a disk is inserted and that the drive door is closed."
I unplugged the ipod and there was only one song on it. I plugged it back in and it started to sync only to give me this error message a few minutes in.
"Attempting to copy to the disk <name of ipod> failed. An unkown error occurred (-53)."
Now iTunes on the PC is frozen and I'm really confused and don't know what to do. She has an older iPod (3rd generation, dock connector) that has given her some problems over the years but nothing like this. Unfortunately, she's traveling tomorrow and really wants her iPod and music with her. At this point, neither the Mac nor the PC will load the music onto the iPod. What do we do? Also, she has Applecare for her new Mac, but it looks like the issue is with the iPod, not the computer - if I call them will they help me fix it? Should I bother trying to bring the iPod and the Mac into the local store?

    Now it gets even weirder.
I tried plugging the iPod into a third computer (PC) which belongs to someone else. The computer restores, syncs and loads all of his songs onto her iPod perfectly fine.
The only thing that makes sense is that there's somethng about one or more of her songs that's causing this problem. Is there anyway for me to find out which songs are doing this?

  • Ipod not recognised by Windows, USB device not recognised

    Hi hope someone can help
I have recently received my ipod back from Applecare who have sent the ipod back in ' working order ' but it will no longer be recognised by my windows. It says USB device not recognised and i cant find, nor will it install drivers that i located on the ipod updater etc.
I have tried several methods on this forum but none seem to work.
The letter from mycare says the iPod is formatted for a computer operating Mac OS X. Although i stated wi use Windows. But the leter states this can be changed bu installing the updater, but this wont make a diff as comp still wont regonise the device after i have followed there instructions. Any advice?
    Thanks

I'm not really up on the complexities of the Windows OS but try this tip I picked up a while back, hopefully it might help.
"USB Device not Recognized in Windows".
    1. On the Start menu, click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click the System icon.
    3. Click the Hardware tab.
    4. Click Device Manager.
    5. Scroll down the list of devices to the Universal Serial Bus controllers
    6. Click the plus icon next to the Universal Serial Bus controllers.
    7. Double-click one of the indented USB Root Hub entries.
    8. Click the Power Management tab.
    9. Deselect the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" option.
    10. Click the OK button at the bottom of the window.
    11. Restart the computer.

  • IPod Not being recognized with all the software updates

I've been without my iPod for a few weeks now and I desperately want it back. I dropped it a while back, and have come online to look up stuff to restore it, but none of that is working for me. I reset it by pressing "menu" and "Play" at the same time, then put it into disk mode by pressing the "ff" and "rwd" buttons together, but even in disk mode my computer is not recognizing it at all. The iPod screen says that it is in disk mode, and says it's okay to disconnect, but its not giving me the option to restore when I connect it to my computer and open the iPod updater.
It also gives me the file folder w/ an exclamation point whenever i don't put it into disk mode. And the few times that my computer does pick up something the iPod updater flashes a message that says "Can't Mount iPod" and then the updater manually closes itself. Anyone know what to do?
    Thanks
20GB with Dock Connector   Windows XP

For "Cant mount iPod" - please try the following first
    Click on Start=>Control Panel=>Admin Tools=>Computer Management=>Disk Management
-- Right-Click on the iPod and select “change drive letter”
-- Choose something further along in the alphabet that is unused (Usually, “M”, “N”, “O” or something similar)
    -- Safely eject the iPod
    -- Reboot the PC
If still cant solve it then
The Sad iPods icon, clicking sound or folder with an exclamation mark are the toughest problems to deal with, and must do a Restore in order to fix it. However, when your iPod is showing this icon, it is probably too late for your computer to recognize the iPod.
    1. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    2. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
    Still can't see your iPod?
Several things could keep iPod from appearing in iTunes or in the Desktop/Finder when you connect it to your PC/Mac. The most likely causes are listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the list to see if that is what's keeping iPod from appearing.
    3. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    4. Try another known-good FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    5. Try another known-good FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    6. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    7. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. We've found that in many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
There are also some cases being reported that some unrecognized iPod being able to be erased with Linux, then reconnect the iPod with the original computer and do a Restore there.
    8. Try to do an Erase (Disk Utility) on a Mac computer or a format with a PC (Disk Management tool) but ensure you choose the right Drive (your iPod not your Hard Disk of your computer). You may need to plug and unplug your iPod with the computer for several attempts, and switching around Format and Restore, and hope out of sudden, it will get recognized.
    9. Diagnostic mode solution – which I copied from a thread of a post from thinktwice
“Then I cam across this special Diganostics Mode that you can get to by resetting and then while the Apple is showing pressing the Select and backwards keys simultaneously. It bring up and weird Diagnostic utility witha a abunch of tests. Here is what I did
    - I tried the 5in1 test and got and error on Firewire.
    - I did the HDD R/W and surprisingly it passed.
    - I went on to the HDD scan. This supposedly tkaes acouple of minute so I waited. I think 4-5 dots appeared then nothing. The iPod started to get hot. THe disk was spinning away. After a while the battery got very low. THis test chews up the battery. So I escaped out by resetting and went to connect it to a power source.
My USB was dangling out of my computer and I was too lazy to get the Firewire AC adapter thing going so I connected expecting the whole lockup thing with iTunes. Surprise. IT was recognized immediately and has been working like a champ. So go figure.
Details on Diag mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/index.shtml
    10. Let me ask you a question, if an iPod with no iPod software with it. When your connect it with a computer, what would happen?
Yeah, the computer will treat it as a fresh external hard disk, which will get force mounted, the computer will ask you to format the iPod. It does not really matter the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted iPod software on the iPod, after that the computer will recognize it.
Once it has been completed, eject your iPod, open the iPod updater and interestingly, you will able to do the Restore this time.
Base on the above, that's why I suggest Windows users who experience trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac machine or vice versa. PC computer will not recognize a Mac formatted iPod, but it will get mounted in an attempt to format your iPod.
    11. Put your iPod in disk mode and plug with a computer, and have a boot of your computer using the Mac OS or XP startup disks, hope that your iPod will be seen on Mac's Disk utility and allow you to do a Erase there. Or, under the XP, you will be able to find your iPod there for you to do a Restore.
But, if none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired. You can arrange for service at the iPod Service Website.
I have just read an interesting solution about the Sad iPod, it does make sense but the warranty will be waived once you open the iPod, I would not do it myself as I am not good on doing this

  • Ipod not being recognized

I have an ipod touch second gen. and I downloaded itunes v.10 2 weeks ago I think, and when I plugged my ipod in, it said it was being recognized as a camera and I disconnected it. Now whenever I plug it in, it's not recognized anywhere on my computer. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing itunes and I plugged it in to my brothers computer (he has v.10 too) and it worked? I did a software update hoping it would fix my problem, but still nothing. Help please?

Connect your ipod. When you go to My Computer and look for Devices with Removal Storage. Do you see your device?
If not, go to [iPod not recognized and Windows Device Manager is empty|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1496].
If it is there go to [iPod not recognized in 'My Computer' and in iTunes for Windows|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1496]

  • What the iPod touch really needs.

So I may have missed a thread on this... But does it not seem logical that what the the iPod touch really needs bluetooth. I could care less about using bluetooth for audio, synking or anything else but 1 thing...
Given that the iPhone is locked into AT&T wouldn't a bluetooth enabled pone allow you to use bluetooth's networking abilities to share you cell phones data plan? Granted some wireless providers (cough*verizon*cough) cripple there phones and disable this feature. but it would be at least an option to some people.

The ipod touch does not support bluetooth nor does it have bluetooth built into the device. THere are bluetooth adapters that you might use for like headphones but nothing like data transfer and what you mention. If this is a feature you would like on a future ipod then leave your feedback at the link below.
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipod.html
THese forums are for technical questions regarding the ipod touch and not for speculation or rumors. You should go elsewhere for such a thing. If your interested in how bluetooth works on the iphone then it is best to post your question about that product in the right forum linked below.
