Ipod not recognised by computer & won't charge (with computer or adapter)

Hi,
When I try to charge my 30G ipod video with my apple adapter, it does absolutely nothing. When I hook it up to my computer, it won't turn up in 'my computer' or itunes and i get the message that the USB-device can't be recognised. On another computer i get the message that I've caused an electricity overdose (sorry for my bad translation from dutch) on the USB input. Other ipods can be recognides by my computer. I've installed the latest version of itunes.
I've been to the apple store and when they try to charge it there with their adapter it does charges, so i thought my adapter was broken, but it does charge any other ipod. With my dad's (not apple) adapter i can't charge my ipod as well.
I hope someone knows a solution to this problem. I've already tried resetting and putting it in disk mode, but nothing works.

Yes, I've been using it for months. And I can charge other devices with it. (my iPhone) but something weird just happened..... I kept on pluging it in the iPod and sometimes it would start to chàrge then sometimes it won't charge. Charges every time with the iPhone though.

  • Ipod classic 4th gen. Won't charge with USB but will with firewire

Please help. I keep my old ipod running through my car charger. This charger broke recently and I replaced. The new won't charge the ipod. I've plugged the ipod into the mac and pc, using different leads. Nothing. The apple logo pops up and then a wee battery with an exclamation appears and disappears.
If I plug it into mains using the charger which came with it it will charge (but it won't hold the charge, this I am used to, hence why it's always plugged into me car) BUT if I plug it in using a USB to ipod cable it won't work.
    Very confused.
    Can anyone help?

Looks like yor iPod battery need to be replaced

FYI, you should  charge the iPod Classic, for at least 2 hours, using a USB 2.0 port at the back of the Desktop, or if you are using a Mac the USB port on the body of the Mac and not those on the keyboard, (these dont have enough power to charge the battery, which need at least 450mA current)

  • Playbook won't charge with 3rd party adapter

I have a new Playbook plugged in to a Lenovo slim adapter with a micro-USB tip.  I use this same adapter to charge my Blackberry (it has dual charging capability so I can plug my laptop in at the same time).
The issue is that although the Playbook shows it is plugged in (lightning bolt across the battery icon), the charge doesn't increase, and actually seems to go down ever so slightly.
I always thought that USB was USB (i.e. 5V), but that appears not to be the case.  Any thoughts?

You need to use the charger that came in the box with the playbook, it is rated at 5v 1800mA. If you use another adapter, even though it is microUSB, it wont have enough capacity (current wise) to charge a playbook and a laptop at the same time, it wont even be able to keep the charge, because is splitting the current with two loads.  Voltage and Current are two different things. Same voltage doesn't mean it can charge many devices at the same time, unless the rated Current of the charger is enough for the loads, i.e. three devices rated at 5v 300mA can be charge with an adapter rated at a max Current of 1500mA, 5v, because is overdesigned for the loads.
In a playbook in particular, the more current the adpater has (with a constant 5v) the faster the battery gets charged.

  • Ipod won't charge with mac or adapter

only two days ago i was able to sync my 5th generation 30GB ipod with my macbook without any problems. the next time i tried to connect it to my laptop, nothing happened. the usb cable wasn't recognized and my ipod did nothing (even the "do not disconnect" screen didn't show up). so i tried connecting my ipod to my power adapter. again, no response whatsoever. the thing is, my ipod works perfectly otherwise: it still plays music, videos and functions normally except for the fact that i can neither charge nor update it. i tried reseting it multiple times and still no change. now my battery is running really low b/c i can't charge it
any suggestions as to what i should do? i really don't want to have to order a new ipod

Did you check the docking port and connector for any kind of debris or lint?
Can you use another USB cable?
Did you try to reset the iPod by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again?

  • IPod touch 3rd gen won't charge with apple cable

This problem with my iPod is that it just won't charge with the Apple cable to my mac. When I plug it into the wal charger from Apple it does charge, but on the USB is keeps saying that charging isn't supported with this accessory.
Please help, since I'll have to charge my iPod with the USB for the coming 5 months!

I know this may sound stupid, but it was the same problem I had and wanted to tell you just in case you have a case on your ipod.
I had a soft gel case on my ipod touch and it prevented the cables from going in all the way.  It would work from time to time and in the computer USB and wall charger it would work once then not for a few weeks.  I just make sure my cover is not in the way of any of the cords and I have never had that problem again.
mine is the 3rd Gen touch too.

Hello skdog I possibly think your ipod touch is black because it has not charged. If your dock is broken it might just mean the dock will be broken and so might be the USB port. You should see an Apple shop nearby and hand it over and see what they can do. I hope this information works!

  • My computer won't charge my ipod or recognize that it's there

My computer won't charge my ipod or recognize that it's there, now my ipod is out of battery, won't turn on, and to put it plainly, won't work. I cannot find my wall charger and the ipod will not reocognize anything as a power source so it won't charge...How do I make my computer recognize my ipod....it's only a couple of months old so the batttery probably isn't completely dead.

do you have any other usb devices? try plugging one in and see if it works, and that the computer recognizes it (digital camera, printer, bluetooth mouse/keyboard, memory stick). The computer should recognize any device. If not, the computer is at fault. First thing I'd do is buy an external charger, one that fits a 110 electrical outlet or something for the car. But thats just me because I cant live without the ipod.
One more thought - do you plug the ipod into the computer via a usb hub?? sometimes hubs starve the device of power which can stop them from being recognized. I had that problem with a camera. Unplugged the hub, plugged the camera directly to the pcs usb port and it worked.

  • IPod Photo won't charge with Power Adapter but charges through Computer....

Hi got this problem... searched the discussion board but didn't find any satisfying answers.
Hope somebody can help me out here.
    Problem description:
My iPod photo won't charge using the power adapter from Apple. Bought a second one won't work, used different cables won't work either.
however it does charge via the USB port of the computer.
And it also charges via the car stereo plug (forgot the real name but it's from the apple store).
So does anybody have a similar problem? Could it be the iPod that is defective and also destroyes the Power Adapter maybe?
didn't try a different iPod to charge yet. So that's one thing left to try for verification.
untill then maybe somebody knows help, and it might be just a little setting thing.
    Thanks for the Help

    hi Rene!
hmmmm. it sounds like you've already tried most of the things listed on these documents:
    iPod's battery doesn't charge
iPod: Troubleshooting the Apple iPod AC Adapter
iPod: About the Apple iPod Power Adapter
from what you're reporting, i'm currently most suspicious of the electrical outlets you're using with those adapters. if you try switching it to a different outlet, does it charge properly then?

  • HELP! My ipod is frozen on and won't charge!

    Hello!
My ipod is completely frozen and won't charge. It is stuck on a picture of a folder with an exclamation point(!). I reset it several times and it just goes back to this picture. I have tried to charge it but it seems to not connect to my computer because the battery does not come up and my ipod icon does not appear in my itunes. I tried to charge it on another computer and it would not charge on that one either. I updated my itunes but still nothing. Restoring seems kind of extreme (losing ALL of my songs!!) so I was hoping I could fix this problem without having to do that! Can anyone help me or has this happened to anyone else? Suggestions are welcome! Please Help! =)

  • IPod 4G screen is white, Won't connect to computer, wasn't restoring or in dfu. How to fix?

iPod 4G screen is white, won't connect to computer(Even though it's plugged in) no restoring was in process at the minute, and won't react to anything(Including turning on/off, no DFU, no Restoring, Home and power button aren't doing anything) How do I fix it?
Today, I was "screwing around" with an iron. When I pryed it open, (I'm guessing it must've hit my iPod 4G on the ironing board, I know, stupid decision) Next thing I knew, my iPod screen was white, or turning white, from an app I was in. I started freaking out because it wouldn't turn off or on. The sliding thing didn't even appear. I tried doing the "hold home and power button for ___ seconds" which didn't do anything, I tried plugging it into the computer, but the computer couldn't even tell it was plugged in. No restore or anything. It's currently white while I'm typing this... It's been about maybe a hour since it's been white. Any help or suggestions please? I'm not looking forward to taking it apart because recently I got the iPod fixed from when I had accidently shut it into the car door when it was in the pocket of my cardigan, which got caught in the door.
The back has a big diagnol dent across it, and I'm at a young age and not very experienced with this field, so I'm not opening anything. Again, this would reeeaaalllly help if anyone could help me with this issue! Thanks!

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • IPod not recognised by windows iTunes

iPod not recognised by windows 8 computer.
After I recently updated iTunes I plugged my iPod Touch 4th Gen into my windows 8 desktop.
It was not recognised as an iPod by iTunes, only as a storage device in MS Windows.
After much searching I identified the problem was there was no apple mobile device USB driver installed.
    I searched for … devmgmt.msc
    Which opened the Device Manager
In Device Manager, under Portable devices, the Apple iPod should have been listed. It wasn’t.
So I Right Clicked on ‘Apple iPod’ and left clicked on ‘Update Driver Software’.
Then ‘Browse my computer for driver software’.
Browsed to this location … Windows (C) / Program files / Common Files / Apple / Mobile Device Support / Drivers /
    And then clicked on ‘usbaapl64’
It installed the Apple mobile device USB Driver, as it should have done already, when I recently updated iTunes.
Could someone check the above to see if I have described the problem and the solution correctly.
    Thanks. Chris KV

OK, update to try to provide a clearer description of the problem and solution that worked for me.
    Problem.
After I recently updated iTunes I plugged my iPod Touch 4th Gen into my windows 8 desktop. It was not recognised as an iPod by iTunes, only as a storage device in MS Windows. After much searching I identified that there was no Apple Mobile Device USB driver installed. Without the driver Windows did not recognise the Apple iPod when connected via USB.
    Solution.
I needed to use the Windows Device Manager, so I searched for … devmgmt.msc (You need to include the .msc) and clicked on it, which opened the Device Manager in a new window.
In Device Manager, under Portable devices, the Apple iPod should have been listed. It wasn’t.
So I Right Clicked on: ‘Apple iPod’ and left clicked on: ‘Update Driver Software’.
Then clicked on: ‘Browse my computer for driver software’.
Then clicked on browse and drilled down to the following location on my hard drive:
    C:\Program files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers /
    And then clicked on ‘usbaapl64’
This installed the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver.
Now Windows recognises my iPod again.
PS. I can’t remember if I had to restart the computer once the device driver was installed. But if the above doesn’t work for you, then at the end, try restarting to see if that finishes the installation of the device driver. Good luck

  • Ipod shuffle 2 nd gen itunes 9 ipod not recognised (windows 7 64 bit OS)

    Hi
I see that others are having issue. My problem is that I have windows 7 ultimate installed (64 bit) along with itunes 9 (64 version) . When i plug in my ipod shuffle 2nd gen 1gb I get the following message " the software required for communicating with ipod and mobile phones is not installed properly. Do you want Itunes to repair this for you?'
Say yes reboot - same error message .Connect ipod not recognised.
    Have reinstalled itunes 9
Have also uninstalled itunes and reinstalled
gone to portable devices under device manager to update drivers still issues
Is anyone getting the same error message and is there a solution
    really frustrating !!!

I'm having the same kind of problem and haved tried pretty much everything my self. We have two computers. One with Vista and the other with XP pro. We have three iPods.
80g video, Touch first generation and touch second generation. Everything works fine with the first two, but windows cannot find the driver for the 2nd generation touch. Altough all drivers seem to be installed. The problem started with the Vista computer. I've uninstalled and re-installed everything and nothing works. Took everything on the XP computer, and the 2nd generation touch is still not recognized.
Of course I-tunes is up to date and all drivers as well.
