Ipod Not recognized 3rd generation

Ok so yesterday i had an ipod nano that wa snew and i had already had itunes downloaded on the computer. I found out that itunes could not recognize the drive and i had to reformat and update my ipod to get it to recognize. Well it worked. The problem i have is i just got another ipod (a 3rd generation) and when i plug it into the computer my computer recognizes it but itunes wont. I dont remember everything i did to the nano to reformat and update but i am wondering if i run the updater i installed yesterday, would that help? WOuld itunes recognize it? Also can i use the updater i downloaded yesterday for the nano and update the 3rd generation one?

Hello Vickileve, Mikey!
Ask around about fanatical 3G iPod owners, and my name is at the top of the list. I love it. I think the newer models are all serious downgrades over the 3G. I bought an iPod to carry my music, so it doesn't need color screens, or the ability to display photos or movies. What it does need to be is solid, and mine is. Dispite the whole battery flap, I still regularly get over 4 hours of continuous play. It has never once frozen or given me any evil startup icons. And those glowing buttons always get a second look from iPod "newbies" with their 4G, photo, mini, nano, with Video models.
"Back in the day", there were tons of issues with folks connecting the 3G to USB. As you seem to have found a few of them, I'm going to share some info to make your lives easier. The 3G was the first iPod that (nominally) supported USB. It was really an afterthought tacked on to a firewire device to help market it to the Aindows community (me at the time). It never seemed to work that well on Windows computers. iPods would get lost because XP recycled USB resources, and iTunes became confused. They would only load a small number of songs at a time. Then there's the whole USB 1.1 vs. USB 2 thing...
Almost without fail, the solution to a USB related issue was "use firewire". It really did clear up most of teh problems. And for those that would like to be part of the best group of iPod companions, the advice is still sound. Your 3G iPod will be much better behaved if you get an inexpensive Adaptec firewire card.

I have a new PC, which now very unfortunately runs Windows Vista as an operating system - I have installed iTunes latest version 7.4 but still the PC does not recognize my iPod or doesn't find the hardware - can anyone help?

  • IPOD not recognized, can't restore

If I hear any more about the five R's I'm gonna puke. If the IPOD is not recognized by the computer the restore option is impossible. At least the way it's written on the five R's page that Apple is so found of sending people to take care of their problems. Here's a question. What do you do if your IPOD is not recognized by more than one Windows XP machine? You can only do four of the five R's. I've done all four till I'm blue in the face. The IPOD works fine offline from the computer, but I can't update anything anymore since the computer doesn't recognize the IPOD. I'm about ready to drive three hours to an Apple store and let them help. Incidentally, I also have an older IPOD 2nd or 3rd generation. It talks to both of these windows XP machines on the same USB ports that fail to recognize the 60gb video IPOD. I bought the new one on the strength of the good experience I've had with the old one (excepting battery life of course). Now I'm about ready to throw the new one at the wall!
pc   Windows XP   neither desktop or laptop recognize new IPOD

    Been here before - twice.
When you operate your IPOD does it make a recurring sound of whirring & clicking? If so then your hard drive may be in the early stages of failing.
This same problem has happened to me - twice, it is followed with the Ipod turning itself off during certain songs, then complete failure.
If this is the same as your problem your only remedy it to take it to the store and get it replaced.
On both occasions I was lucky as it had around 1 month left on the warranty.

  • When i plug in my ipod touch (8gb, 3rd generation) it doesn't turn on and the apple logo flashes on and off. how can i stop it and turn on my ipod??????

when i plug in my ipod touch (8gb, 3rd generation) it doesn't turn on and the apple logo flashes on and off. before this it wouldn't turn on unless it was plugged in.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • HT4623 my ipod touch is 3rd generation.

My ipod touch is 3rd generation. I have done all the erase and restore things in the article and it still is  using ios 4.2.1. It does not have a button that says software update that i can find and the computer did not update it.  What can i do?

This may indicate you have a 2nd generation. Please check the model number on the back and post back. If it is A1288, it is a 2nd gen.

  • Ipod not recognized by itunes, why?

I got a new Ipod and it is not recognized by Itunes. I have reinstalled itunes. I have tried to reset the ipod. It also does not show up on Windows Explorer. I tried changing things in the MSCONFIG file and it still did not work. The USB ports work and I have checked that by plugging in an external HD. Any suggestions?

  • Ipod not recognized by windows code43

    Hello Judy,
It's impossible to sync your iPod if it is not being recognized in iTunes.  I found a few resources that I think will help with this issue.
I recommend starting with the steps in this tutorial:
iPod nano not appearing in iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipodnano/assistant/itunes/
If you are still getting the same error code after following those steps, I recommend the following article (you can skip any steps you have already taken):

  • My ipod not recognized by the computer or itunes?

Ok, the iPod works fine playing music and watching videos and everything else it is supposed to, and it charges fine. But when i plug it up my PC to sync new music, the screen on the iPod does like normal and goes to the gray and orangeish screen that says Connected, then immediately says Disconnecting iPod and shows the little progress bar as if you had ejected it. How can it do this on it's own before anything has recognized it?
I have done everything that the Support on here has said, the 5 r's and all that, and nothing. Checked device manager on my computer and it actually says that is is plugged up and recognized, but has a yellow exclamation point beside it. The properties of it says this error...
"Windows cannot use this hardware device because it has been prepared for "safe removal", but it has not been removed from the computer. (Code 47)"
These errors occurred two days again until now, i have made no recent updates on my computer or iPod to have damaged anything but these problems randomly occur. it's really odd and if someone could help me it would be great.

Have you carefully worked through each and every suggestion in this Apple support document?

  • Ipod not recognized anymore

My old laptop used to recognize my ipod using usb but only when it was fully charged and even then it would only recognize it some of the time. It also wouldn't ever charge through my computer and the ipod updater never worked. Eventually, that computer stopped recognizing it all together and I didn't even get the do not disconnect screen. In the meantime, I picked up a new laptop thinking maybe I had bad usb connections but I still have the same problem. I have lost all of my music files off of Itunes (due to my own fault of reinstalling windows without backing up my files thinking that might fix) but still have them on my ipod. Is there any way to back up my ipod and how do I restore it (or back it up) when it isn't recognized my my PC? I have tried new cables etc. and am convinced the problem is with my ipod. Any ideas?

  • New iPod not recognized in Vista PC and no devices in iTunes

Hello, plugged iPod Touch into computer and Vista showed usual little box which said automatically located drivers and installed them. But couldn't find iPod in My computer. Installed iTunes from download area. No devices in left column.
Reinstalled iTunes from fresh download. Plugged iPod in every USB point on computer, but nothing happens. IPod not found or recognized.
Tried to find USB driver in Device Manager but all have generic names and so can't identify which driver was installed for iPod. None show installation date or anything which may identify which one. Also forgot to create restore point first (kicking self - always do this normally before installing something new).
Been through Apple help pages and tried all their ideas including reinstalling. Still nothing found.
Could someone please suggest what to do, besides dropping computer out of window?
    Many thanks
    Phil Chave
