Ipod not recognized and Restore doesn't work

i have an ipod classic 160 GB, with disk mode enabled. When i connect it to the mac mini, it calls up iTunes. but then the message comes up that ipod can't be recognized. So i have restored it (using the latest updates, by connecting to the net) and then synced. During ejecting the ipod too, the proper procedure has been followed. However, at the end of all of it (i have 10000+ items in iTunes and it takes a LOOONG time to sync), when i try to use the disconnected ipod, it shows 'No Music', 'No Playlists', no this, no that...
I have also gone thru some other posts in this forum which suggested methods (such as getting ipod into disk mode and then connecting, trashing ipod software updates and reinstalling), to try to rectify the problem but there has been no difference And BTW, now i check, ipod shows 92 GB free (of the 160 GB). so what been copied, and where is it? or is the flash drive corrupted?
Pls HELP, as I need the ipod and my music
BTW, I think that this problem has become more pronounced since I installed the latest iTunes update (7.6.1)

Try this...
*Checking hard-drive for errors*
Hold Menu+Select on the iPod for about 6 seconds until it resets, then hold Menu+Play as soon as the Apple logo appears, again for about 6 seconds to put the machine in disk mode. Connect to your computer, closing iTunes if it opens. Run *Disk Utility / Repair Disk* for the iPod. This should find and correct any errors in the logical & physical structures of your iPod's hard drive. Once these have been fixed you can reset the iPod (hold Menu+Select ) and should stand a better chance of a successful restore.
Once you've restored your iPod don't rush to dump all the data back exactly as it was before. Complex smart playlists can sometimes trigger constant reboots or dumping of the iPod's library. In addition, larger transfers can fail leaving data in an inconsistent state. Try this technique for populating the iPod in stages.
*Break up large transfers*
In iTunes select the menu item *File... New Smart Playlist*. Change the first drop-down box to Playlist, the next to is and the next to Music. Tick against *Limit to*, type in say 10, then change the drop-down to GB, and set the last drop-down to artist. When you click OK you can enter a name for the playlist, e.g. Transfer. Now sync this playlist to your iPod rather than your entire library. When the sync is complete modify the rule ( *File... Edit playlist* ) to increase the size by your chosen amount, then sync and repeat. You can experiment with different size increments, if it doesn't work just choose something a bit smaller until it works each time. Before long you should have all your music on your iPod. Once that's done you can move on to other media such as podcasts, videos, photos etc.

  • Why is my iPhone not recognized  and why doesn't it charge?

My iPhine will not charge. I have tried another working iPhone cord and wall unit and it doesn't work as well. Also my iPhone does not show on iTunes when plugged into the MacBook Pro with either cord. I am also getting a message that "the accessory being used is not compatible" when the phone is not using any accessory.
I think it is a unit problem. I have tried the restore, reset procedure, but don't want to lose recent pictures, so I haven't done the final restore procedure. Help?

    sevencycleman,
The message you are getting about "This accessory..." and the fact that a known good cord didn't work indicates there is probably something wrong with the dock connector on the iPhone.
I would recommend taking it into the Genius Bar at an Apple Retail Store if there is one near you, or calling AppleCare.
    Hope this helps,
    Nathan C.

  • IPod Not Recognized and Can't Restore

    hello,
Since I installed Tiger, my iPod is not recognized by iTunes--I get an error message saying the iPod is there, but iTunes can't identify it and to install the Optional Support Software that came with Tiger. I have installed the optional software, but the same error keeps appearing. Since I can't get the iPod in the source list, I can't restore it to start again. I have the latest version of iTunes. Can anyone help?
    Thanks.

    Hello,
I posted this question initially and have managed to resolve my problem. What I realized is that my iPod problem did not seem to be related to the iPod, but rather to the USB port. I did everything everyone suggested, including resetting, changing USB ports; however, my keyboard and mouse still worked. Then I realized that my external drives were not being recognized, so I restarted the machine with the drive in the port and they were recognized. I then tried the same with my iPod and it worked--first, I was able to update the software, and then I restarted again and the device was recognized and synced.
I'm not sure why the USB port will not recognize the iPod or drives unless the computer restarts, but it's worth trying to see if this resolves anyone else's problem.

  • Forgot iPod Touch 4th passcode. Trying to recover and restore doesn't work!

My daughter got new iPod Touch for Christmas. She added a passcode for fun, but promptly forgot it. According to support, I'm supposed to put the iPod in "recover" mode and then "restore" it to erase everything including the passcode. However, I've tried it like 100 times and it just restores back to saying it's my daughter's iPod and asks for passcode. I even tried deleting the backup records under preferences/devices and it still does the same thing! HELP!!! How can I get the computer to totally erase the iPod so I can start over!
P.S. Apple could have cooked up an easier
way to recover a passcode -- a hint option or something. My goodness!

    - You are placing the iPod in recovery mode right? See the following for recovery mode:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808
    - Next try placing it in DFU mode and restoring.
    http://geekindisguise.wordpress.com/2009/07/16/how-to-put-ipod-touch-iphone-into -dfu-mode/
    - Are you try to restore from backup with the backup having the unknown passcode? You can delete the backup by going to iTunes' preferences under the Devices tab.

  • IPod not recognized, Disk Mode doesn't help, iPod shows apple screen

LONG VERSION (SCROLL DOWN TO SKIP):
I added two movies (Garden State, Little Miss Sunshine) onto my iPod. I didn't add them to play, I only copy + pasted into iPod, since I was using the iPod as an external hard drive.
I go to my friend's house to add the movies to his computer, my friend says that my iPod got screwy when he plugged it in. It restarted and only showed the Apple logo. I unplugged my iPod, reset it, and it still wouldn't work. I plugged it in, and his screen says: USB Device malfunctioned, not recognized, etc. I plug it into several of his other computer's, all don't work.
I take it home, my computer shows the same message: USB Device not recognized because of malfunction.
This entire time, my iPod only shows the Apple logo screen, or the Please Wait, Very Low Battery screen.
I put it into disk mode and my computer still wouldn't recognize it.
    SHORT VERSION:
My iPod only shows Apple logo unless I put it into disk mode, and my computer won't recognize iPod either way.
I see the message: USB Device not recognized because of malfunction.
HP   Windows XP   AMD Athlon X2 4200+, 1GB RAM, 250 GB HD

So charge it all night long then reset?
I've only been charging it for about 30 minutes at a time.
My iPod finally works now; I can scroll through screens, etc., and when I plug it into my computer, the familiar "CHARGING" screen appears.
But it still won't recognize, so I'm gonna do what you said.

However, shouldn't the Database be able to recover whatever data is in there in the datafiles and startup normally. From where should it be recoverd, only if we store the data changes in a separate files. These files are called archive logs. The archive logs will be generated when you enable archive log.
This is my question and concern. I searched for Metalink and couldn't find anything on it.
I want to startup the database with whatever Data is present there after the backup. Any solutions for such a scenario ?

But again, all these tries are for nothing. At the end of the day if your database is in no archive log mode the reliable backup is only the one taken using cold backup method. i.e. by shutting down the database.

  • IPod not recognized after restoring from Mac format.

    Hey,
I used my old iPod photo with my Mac for a long time. Recently I got a new iPod video and enjoy it a lot. I ended up selling my old iPod to my dad on the conditions that I had to put all the music on there for him .
Anyway, I know that Mac formatted iPods aren't recognizable on Windows PC's. Thus, I restored my old iPod to its original factory settings using the iPod software updater/restorer before trying to load my dad's library from the PC. However, the iPod is still not being recognized by the PC. And when I try the update/restore on the PC it says "iPod service error." It does show up in the "My Computer" folder, however it says the disk must be formatted. If I formatted it manually on the PC and then tried restore on the PC would it then work?
    Thanks.

NEVERMIND. IGNORE TOPIC. My issue has been resolved.

  • IPOD NOT RECOGNIZED, MY FIX IS SIMPLE & WORKS

Well, like all of you, I was extremely frustrated. So, I read, read, and read some more. Turns out in the manual, Apple clearly states that if your IPOD is insufficiently charged, your Windows/computer may not recognize it. (Mine registered half on the battery indicator when it would not be recognized).
So, I bought the IPOD USB power adapter, charged it fully in under 1 hour plugged it in to the USB port and voila, found new hardware, installed it, up pops itunes and like the rascals sang, Groovin, though on a Tuesday morn.
"Your iPod isn't charged or getting power
Your iPod must have enough of a charge for your computer to recognize it". Apple troubleshooting guide.
I suspect that for some of you who perservered through all sorts of resets, formats, etc., simply had enough of charge (ironically at least 4 hours if not more to charge via the usb to comp connection) that ir eventually worked.
    I sincerely hope this helps.

You are most welcome. I am absolutely sure now that
the charge status is the issue. Both of my daughters

updated the itunes and ipod software. All is a firm
    go.
I hope it works out for you. Let me know..

    Hey Mickey,
Thanks for the tip. For over 6 hours, I'd tried everything from updating my drivers, to reinstalling the software. I charged my Ipod as you suggested, but that didn't work, either.
Then I tried resetting the Ipod (connect ipod to computer, set Hold switch to Hold, then turn it off again, press and hold the Center and Menu buttons for at least 6 seconds until the Apple logo appears).
It worked! I still appreciate your tip, though- it gave me hope enough to keep working on the problem for another hour. Cheers!

  • Ipod not recognized on usb 2.0, works on usb 1

Hi, I have a Power PC g4 runing mac os 10.4.11
I also bought 2 ipod nanos 4gb. these are the 6th
and 7th ipods in the house. At first I was using
a usb 1 port to transfer my stuff and everything
worked well. I then decided to add a Iogear usb
2.0 pci card in the computer. At first everything
was working really well it was really fast. At some
point I realized that sometimes the ipod would not
mount on the computer. I would work a bit later.
Now it just never mounts on usb 2. usb 1 works fine,
plugging my camera on the usb 2.0 ports also work fine.
plugging the ipod in a macbook works, but it will not
mount on my power Pc (where my music is). I'm sure the
usb 2 card works as it recognize both my camera and my
ipod with video 30gb. I'm not sure if it worked at all since I
upgraded the system from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11
Has anyone heard of a problem with 10.4.11 compatibility?
I work for an apple reseller and heard the new nano has some
problems with some poor quality recharge kits that we sell. I
don't know if this could be linked.
Any comments or experiences could help.
    thanks in advance

I can't offer any help, but I can say that I am having a similar issue with an iogear PCI USB 2.0 card in a G4 867. Card works for other USB items, but doesn't want to work with the nano. I use the same model of card in a G5 and it works until the Mac goes to sleep, then it no longer recognizes the card or anything connected to it until the mac is restarted. Solved that by not allowing it to sleep (in energy saver preferences). I thought that would work for the G4 too, but no luck. The cards worked "normally" prior to updating to Leopard, so I am hoping a future update sorts this out.

  • Ipod not charging and it doesn't enter DFU mode as it is in a recovery mode loop. Can you please advice what i could do to solve this problem. Thank you :D

I have being using ios 5 beta 3 for a few days. It didn't charge my iPod so i thought of downgrading back to ios 4.3.3 but it didn't work so i put my iPod into Pwned DFU mode. When I tried downgrading it didn't let me. i restored back to iOS 5 beta 3 but then DFU mode didn't work so i tried another Restore and unfortuntely the battery went and i can can't charge it. It shows a black screen with a battery and telling me to charge the iPod.

Since your iPad is so new I would suggest-
If you bought it at an Apple Store, there is a 14 day return policy. Take the receipt, iPad, the box and what came in the box to the store and ask to speak with a manager and show him/her the problem and nicely ask to return the unit and purchase a new one.
Before going to the store make a Genius Bar appointment (http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar) and arrive at the store early and proceed with the first step I explained. The reason I suggest making an appointment is because the store may not have the 64GB 3G in stock to sell/exchange. But the Genius Bar may have it in stock to replace under warranty. So, if the manager explains that there are none in stock, then explain you have a Genius Bar appointment any way. If the manager says they do have them in stock to sell then explain you need to cancel your reservation.
If you can't or don't want to visit an Apple Store. Then call 1-800-MY-APPLE and speak with the customer service department.
    Hope this helps.

  • IPod not recognized and now frozen

My computer won't recognize my USB (iPod) device.
I completed all the actions here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61711
I reinstalled my drivers as it says here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305136
Finally I put my iPod into disk mode as it says here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=856777&tstart=30
None of the suggestions worked. After completing this last one and putting my iPod into disk mode, my iPod completely froze on a screen that says "Disk Mode" "OK to disconnect". I have tried every button combination I can think of to at least turn it off or reset but this screen just stays on, presumably until the battery eventually dies.
    Please Help!
    dell laptop   Windows XP

Assuming it's some kind of software issue, I reinstalled itunes again.
Now the computer recognizes that it's an ipod (and a disk drive). But now itunes gives me a message when I plug in my ipod, "iTunes has detected an ipod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore this ipod before it can be used with itunes. You may also try disconnecting and reconnecting the ipod."
    <clicking ok>
    <disconnecting and reconnecting ipod>
"do not disconnect" light comes on and then goes off after a minute, and the message above appears again.
The restore option is right on the screen.
    <clicking restore>
"There was a problem downloading the ipod software for the ipod. The requested resource was not found"
    <clicking ok>
I decided to reinstall the drivers again (no reason) and then try restore again.
I got past the "problem downloading" this time (maybe i lost my connection last time) and got past Apple software agreement, and another error message came up: "The iPod could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1415)."
I've tried three times in a row and that appears to be where it's stuck...

  • 5th gen Ipod not recognized and not charging on any computer.

    Hello
I have a 5th gen Ipod with an odd issue. I have an Ihome radio with Ipod dock in which my Ipod charges and plays everthing just fine. I usually just keep it there to charge and only hook up to my computer if I want to buy something or put other music on it. I tried syncing the other day and nothing happened, would not sync, charge, my computer would not even recognize it. I have tried 2 differnt cables, reset, have tried it with itunes started and not running on my vista computer and have also tried just to charge on a computer with XP that doesnt have Itunes installed. My daughter has in Ipod Touch that works just fine with both my cables and computers.
Any ideas of whats wrong with my 5th gen?
    Thanks

Try restarting your computer with your ipod plugged in. You might also try using a different USB port. If all else fails downgrade to itunes 6 here http://www.apple.com/support/

  • Itunes Error 21; Not security and DFU doesn't work

I have tried recovery mode, tried DFU, fixed my security so that it doesn't affect itunes, and still no dice! I need to know if anything else will work.

Yes, but I figured out what was wrong through a youtube video. The iphone he had had the same problem, but the one thing his video highlighted for me that was similar to my own iphone 4 was the fact the iphone wouldn't try turning on unless it was plugged into power, even if it was fully charged. I'm going to take it into a shop to get it opened and the battery removed and replaced, as is the only fix for my problem. Thank you for trying to help me though.
