Ipod not recognized by any MAC computer

I have a 20gb IPOD 2nd generation which has worked fine until recent itunes and tiger software upgrade. Now Finder nor utilities (ipod updater) nor itunes will recognize the ipod when connected with firewire-- even in disc mode. Ipod is not recognized by any MAC computer (several tried in Apple store). I ran diagnostics and everything checks out on the ipod. Please help.

When I got a different charger later that night, my Ipod was charging but a message popped up saying "USB device not recognized".

    20GB w/color...oldie but a goodie.
But after installing 7.7, it stopped being recognized by iTunes or my G5, period. Was hoping after 7.7.1 that it would reappear, but no luck. When I installed 7.7.1, it appeared on my desktop for a moment, but when I tried to launch iTunes my screen suddenly vomited up this white-type-on-black-bars PC code-looking message up in the upper left-hand that said something about a kern panic. After that, I might as well hook a bar of soap up to my G5, for all the good it does me.
I've gotten as far into the "5Rs" as I can, which isn't very far since you need your 'puter to actually SEE your iPod to execute them, and even tried restarting in disk mode...no luck.
Sometimes my Disk Utility will recognize an iPod hooked to the USB, sometimes it just names it "device".
Took it to work, tried it on my work station there with a different USB even. Nothing. At least at work my iPod goes to the DO NOT DISCONNECT screen, but even after leaving it hooked up for hours, still no joy.
Even tried plugging it into a co-worker's PC, for giggles. Still nothing.
iPod still takes a charge and chugs along merrily, oblivious to its abrupt status as an orphan.
I've done everything I know. Used to be able to solve any of my iPod hiccups before, but I'm stumped.
I have a sinking feeling that either the 7.7.1 update somehow scrambled my iPod so it can't be recognized, or Apple's decided my iPod is obsolete and it's no longer supported by 7.7.1.
    Help, anyone?

I'm confused, you state they already tried to make it work with a computer at the Apple Store. So if they could not get it to work then why would they now? If their computer could not see the iPod there is no way to Restore it in iTunes.
Incidentally, have you tried connecting it directly to a USB port on the back of your computer (if you have a desktop), and disconnecting all other USB devices except your keyboard and mouse? If you do this can you see the iPod in Device Manager?

  • Why is my Ipod not recognized on any computer?

My 4th gen. IPOD, itself a replacement under warranty after my original died, cannot be recognized on ANY computer - in Itunes, My Computer, Design Mgr, etc. It's not under warranty. What can I do? None of the IPOOD rescue attempts (5 in number) work without the IPOD being recognized. Please help.

  • 20gb clickwheel ipod, not recognized by itunes or computer, won't restore!!

Okay, this has been an ongoing problem, with not just one ipod, but two!
My dad and my sister's ipods (both 20gb b/w clickwheel ipods) are completely messed up. Within a week of each other, they have gone from normally functioning ipods, to evil clicking things of doom.
They will not play songs anymore, and alternate between showing the sad ipod icon and the folder icon. Both are ABLE to be placed into disk mode (so they can't be completely screwed...), and make a "whirring sound" in the ipod before any icons are shown. My sister's has been out for service once already, and was supposedly fixed. Now, both are past the 1yr warrenty.
Neither will connect to a computer(we've tried two comps so far.) When connected, the computer will make the coonecting chiming sound, and act as if it's recognizing the ipod, but the ipod will not show up in "my computer", "itunes", or on the "safely remove hardrive" Aside from little connection sound, the fact that the ipod freezes itunes, and my computer, I wouldn't even know it's connected!
Its not our computers, as I have an ipod mini, and it is recognized on both computers, can be restored, updated, ect.
I have restarted and attempted to restore both ipods, to no avail. I have Itunes 7.0.1.8, and am unable to restore it using itunes, as the stupid thing wont recognize the ipod enough to even attempt to restore it! I have tried using previous ipod updaters, but the message "invalid ipod service version" appears, no matter which pevious updater I use.
Would LOVE some advice, as we are at our wits end, and it is disgusting that not one, but TWO ipods are having this same exact problem! Please Help!!!

  • Ipod not recognized by iTunes or computer?????

For two days now my ipod has not been recognized by my computer. I used my brother's old Ipod charger to charge my Ipod but it kept unplugging and replugging the Ipod on its own. When I got a different charger later that night, my Ipod was charging but a message popped up saying "USB device not recognized". My Ipod doesn't show up in iTunes anymore either. I tried restarting my computer but that didn't help (usually never does). I don't want to reset my Ipod if it still can't be recognized afterwards. Somebody please help me!

  • Ipod not recognized either by mac or pc, slows down and gets ****** up

    Hi
My Ipod (clic wheel version, 40 gig) is going crazy !! I've been plugging it on a mac and pc alternatevily every day, so maybe that's why? it first got frozen, showing the file with the exclamation mark, then sad ipod. It suddenly recovered so i can play music again, but my pc won't recognize it (usb or firewire doesn't make any difference), and start slowing down as soon as i plug the ipod in, and sometimes even egts frozen ! it does this sound meaning that a new harddrive has been connected, but it doesn't show on itunes or on the disk. i try to plug it into mac, same story, i tried to reinstall itunes, i tried to download ipod update from the internet, but nothing works. i still can play music on the ipod, but it's working REALLY slowly, does this weird sound, reset itself and shows file with exclamation mark... what can i do ? I'm desperate to lose my music, but i'd rather format it and get my ipod back to normal, thanks

Does the iPod still charge when you have it connected to either the PC or the Mac?
What if you try connecting the iPod to the PC or Mac in Disk Mode?  Any luck there with it at least showing up as an externally mounted drive?

Have you looked at the dock connector on the iPod for signs of damage or debris that could preventing a proper connection?

  • IPod not recognized in iTunes/My Computer, almost caushes computer to crash

My 4G iPod (click wheel, 40GB) is not coming up in iTunes when I connect it to my computer (Windows XP). It is also not showing up if I look in My Computer, but it listed under the Device Manager. So I have no way to disconnect it from my computer without detaching it while the Do Not Disconnect screen is up.
Also, when the iPod is connected to my PC, it does everything short of crashing the computer--programs slow down to a screeching halt, I can't open other programs, but when I disconnect it, it's fine.
I have the current version of iTunes running, I've restarted my PC and reset my iPod to the original settings...I'm thinking that I need to restore the iPod, but because it isn't recognized, I can't!
    Any advice?

I've been using the iPod with this PC for over a year now, and the only problems I've had is being unable to eject from iTunes (though doing so from My Computer was fine) from time to time.
Disk Management lists the iPod along with the other USB devices; I don't know the exact wording and I don't want to go through the whole mess right at this moment.

  • New 30g iPod Not Recognized By iTunes/Mac Using USB 2.0

Hey there folks . . . I just came home today with a shiny new 30GB iPod, but am having a little trouble in getting it to behave properly. The iPod doesn't show up in iTunes 7 or the Finder when I connect it to a USB 2.0 port. It recognizes the thing on a USB 1.1 port, but this is a very unpleasant way to fill a 30GB hard drive, so, hopefully there's some silly thing I'm overlooking . . .
The USB 2.0 controller is functioning fine and dandy it seems, my flash card reader, mouse, and keyboard all function without a hitch when attached to either of my 2 USB 2.0 ports. When the iPod is plugged in, it charges the battery, and it shows up in the System Profiler under the USB High-Speed Bus just as would be expected . . . but Finder doesn't mount it, and iTunes doesn't recognize its existence.
I'm running MacOS X 10.3.9 on an older G4 PowerMac, and I did upgrade to iTunes 7.
    Any ideas? :-/

  • IPod is recognized by iTunes and computer, but wil not sync songs

iPod is recognized by iTunes and computer, but wil not sync songs. I have about 1400 songs and just got 40 more, and before I bought those 40 my iTunes was wiped out. I still had the files so my iTunes was filled up again. Now, when I connect my iPod to the computer it is recognized and then it says "do not disconnect" then after a few seconds it says "ipod update is complete- ok to disconnect". but it did not upload any songs. How can I make it work?

If your iPod shows up in Explorer under 'my computer' try changing the drive letter:
    -- Click on Start=>Control Panel=>Admin Tools=>Computer Management=>Disk Management
-- Right-Click on the iPod and select “change drive letter”
-- Choose something further along in the alphabet that is unused (Usually, “M”, “N”, “O” or something similar)
    -- Safely eject the iPod
    -- Reboot the PC
Then restore your iPod to factory settings.

  • Ipod not recognized by computer or itunes plaese help

Hey I have had my ipod since last december and around april it stopped working and responding to my computer. it does charge but now it can only hold a charge for a certain amount of time. Can sum one help me?

  • My ipod not recognized by the computer or itunes?

Ok, the iPod works fine playing music and watching videos and everything else it is supposed to, and it charges fine. But when i plug it up my PC to sync new music, the screen on the iPod does like normal and goes to the gray and orangeish screen that says Connected, then immediately says Disconnecting iPod and shows the little progress bar as if you had ejected it. How can it do this on it's own before anything has recognized it?
I have done everything that the Support on here has said, the 5 r's and all that, and nothing. Checked device manager on my computer and it actually says that is is plugged up and recognized, but has a yellow exclamation point beside it. The properties of it says this error...
"Windows cannot use this hardware device because it has been prepared for "safe removal", but it has not been removed from the computer. (Code 47)"
These errors occurred two days again until now, i have made no recent updates on my computer or iPod to have damaged anything but these problems randomly occur. it's really odd and if someone could help me it would be great.

Have you carefully worked through each and every suggestion in this Apple support document?
