IPod not recognized by iTunes or updater, computer reads it

My Itunes or Ipod updater won't recognize my ipod, I've tried these methods:
5R's
formatting iPod (unsuccesfully)
reinstalled iTunes an uncountable number of times
deleting the bin, temp, itunes folders, restarting
using the system configuration utility method to start comupter
ive spent more than 5 days without success. please help.

My frustration level just went to about a million percent. I took my ipod to circuit city and they couldnt do anything about it, the guy that tried to fix it told me he has the same problem and the only way to fix it is by exchanging the ipod for a new one (that is if you have a guarantee)...I am now seriously ****** off. I've lost all my little hope that I had on Apple, who has created their own problem and now can't fix it. This never happened until the new update came. Thanks Apple, oh by the way, I wasted $30 today trying to fix it...

  • IPod not recognized in iTunes after update/restore

I was prompted by a message (don't remember the exact verbage) in iTunes to restore my iPod. It appeared to download and install an iPod update. Then when iTunes restarted, the iPod was no longer recognized by iTunes. The iPod still charges and iTunes still starts when it is plugged in but no devices are listed.
A connectivity test shows: iPod service is running, iTunes Helper is running, Apple Mobile Device is running. USB ports verified, FireWire (IEEE 1394) ports verified, iPod found. All tests passed.
The iPod is still visible in Windows but when I attempt to navigate into H:\iPod_Control\iTunes or H:\iPod_Control\Music I get the message: "(directory) is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupt and unreadable."
I have done the first 4 of the 5 R's; obviously not able to restore presently as the iPod is not recognized. I tried manually setting to disk mode- no luck. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes as well.
    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Hi. I had the exact same problem that you identified. I came across a tip somewhere to delete the contents of the pictures folder. When that didn't work for me I figured I'd go for broke and format the darn thing. From windows explorer I right clicked on the ipod volume (for me it was J: drive) and format. After I unplugged and replugged the usb cord, iTunes recognized the ipod again.
    Hope that helps.

  • 20G iPod not recognized by iTunes or My Computer on PC running on XP

I've just gotten a refurbished 20G colour iPod, bought online directly through Apple. When I received it I fully charged it and connected it to my computer, which refused to recognize it. After going through troubleshooting on my own and talking with Apple's telephone support, I brought it to an Apple Store. It was declared a dud and replaced.
I am having the same problem with the replacement iPod (also 20G, colour; not sure if it's refurbished or not). I have gone through the troubleshooting steps as listed on the Apple website; when I plug it into the computer via USB, the battery gets the lightning bolt over it that indicates that it's charging but it still won't show up in iTunes or My Computer.
The iPod is fully charged. I have restarted the computer and reset the iPod several times. I have tried connecting in disc mode; it stays on "OK to disconnect" and nothing else changes. I have reinstalled the iPod and iTunes software on the computer, more than once, along with the drivers for the USB. The USB ports work with other devices with no problem, and the computer is new. As far as I can tell, the USB cord works, since it worked to charge the iPod. That wasn't replaced when the iPod was.
I have tried to restore it, but can't because it won't even see that the iPod is plugged in. Is there anything I can do re. restoring or resetting the iPod on the device itself, without the computer? I haven't yet tried deleting the preference file -- do I just find it in the iTunes folder and throw it in the Recycle Bin, or do I have to clear it through the iTunes program? I read the info about changing the drive name, but I can't do that because it doesn't show up as a drive in the first place. I don't know if it's formatted for Mac or PC -- the last thing listed on the "About" screen is the model number. If it's formatted for a Mac I can't change it on my PC because it won't recognize the iPod; could I change that on a Mac?
I don't want to just get rid of it, but I'm very irritated to have taken home another iPod that does not work, and I don't want to do that again. There is no reason, that I can see, why it won't work on my computer. I have two older PC towers; I will try it on those and go through the troubleshooting, although I did that last time with the other iPod and still had no luck. In the meantime, any ideas? Thanks.

Besweet, I'm having the very same problem with 60GB colour which was bought new and worked for 6 months before suddenly just not being recognised by PC. I hadn't changed anything at all.
I've followed all troubleshooting advice and reinstalled and updated iTunes and iPod updater software but all troubleshooting routes seem to hit the dead end of either the need to access the iPod via the PC (which isn't possible as it's not showing up at all) or the iPod in disc mode stuck at "ok to disconnect".
It's still under 1yr warranty so will have to take to a dealer.
I'm sorry that's not much help for you but at least you know it's not a unique problem.

  • Ipod not recognized by itunes after update

I received an error message upon attempting to sync my iPod after several months of not syncing.  I received an error message that if I didn't perform an update, I would lose all my apps.  The update took ~1 hour and to my dismay, reset my iPod to factory settings and wiped out all my apps.  I tried to sync it, and received an error message: "iTunes could not connect to this iPod touch,  An unknown error has occurred (0xE800000A).  I restarted my computer, but no luck.  iTunes is the latest version 11.0.4.4.   My computer is showing the iPod in devices.

I found a fix posted by jodicle with the error message as subject.   Thanks.

  • Ipod not recognized by ITunes or my computer.

Hey all, I just upgraded from a mini to a 60GB IPod and now when I plug in the IPOD, nothing!
I've read all the Apple website help topics, but I'm lost!
If I was to remove Itunes and the Ipod programs and start all over, will I lose all the songs in my libraries? Any other suggestions?
    Please help!

If you dump iTunes, no you will not lose your music. However, you will want to make sure you back up any songs you bought from the iTunes Music Store. As long as your music files are saved on your harddrive, they'll be there if you dump, and then re-install iTunes. iTunes just reads the files, I don't think it saves them to itself.
I would suggest re-installing the latest version of iTunes, and then re-install the iPod software by using the CD that came with your new iPod. Hopefully that will work for you. Repost w/ the results.

My ipod nano is not recognized in itunes on my computer, when it has in the past. How do I fix this problem?

I would think, Twins1995, that if we are having the problem, others are as well. Hopefully, Apple will shortly issue a follow-up software release to fix the problem. Or is that just wishful thinking on my part.
It would be helpful, if there were some kind of work-around in the interim, so we can use our devices. Pretty frustrating when you consider that all of the hardware and software is produced by Apple.

  • IPhone not recognized by iTunes after update

I recently downloaded & installed the latest update for iTunes and it actually removed iTunes and put and extra (& useless) shortcut for quicktime in my desktop. I uninstalled everything and reinstalled iTunes and quicktime with nor problem. I hooked up the iPhone and downlaoded the latest update for it as well and it crashed during the installation of it. I have since had to reboot on my roomates pc and it will not be come up in iTunes. My computer still recognizes it though. I have gone through all the steps in apples site and microsoft and have no clue what to do now. I use this thing all day every day and need the music and video capablities for "work" purposes. If anyone can help, thanks.

    Symptoms:
iPhone not recognized by iTunes on Windows computer, however an iPod will.
The iPhone CAMERA appears in windows My Computer - but nowhere else.
    Problem:
The Apple iPhone Driver has been replaced by a Microsoft Driver which enables the camera/storage, but did not allow it to connect with iTunes.
    SOLUTION:
From Device Manager, Select the iPhone (under imaging/Portable Devices) and then select "Update Driver", Don't direct it to automatically search for a driver, instead, manually point it to search in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers - It should then "do it's thing" and install the correct apple driver - voila - iPhone is then recognized.

    Hello Jennifer,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
Sorry that your iPod isn't recognized. The following articles should help you sort out what is going on and get your iPod working again. I didn't see if you are using OS X or Windows, so I included the articles for each.

  • While updating my Ipod to ios 5 an unexpcted error occured and now my ipod is not recognized by itunes or my computer and all data has been removed. What can I do

While updating my Ipod to ios 5 an unexpected arror occured before my data was restored and now Itunes will not recognise my Ipod. My Ipod is also not seen as a device in My Computer but asks me to install drivers. What can I do?

    - First I would remove and reinstall all the Apple software using the following and then restoring the ipOd.
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
    - Next see if manually placing the iPOd in recovery mode will allow a restore. For recovery mode see:
iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore
    - Next try DFU mode:
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - Next try another computer/cable to help determine if you have a computer or iPod problem.
    - If the other computer works and yours does not see:

  • IPod NOT recognized in iTunes...'Recognized' in My Computer...W7

Hello, just joined community, my name is Dominick, glad to be here.
So all of the sudden my iPod is NOT being recognized by iTunes.  I have the most recent version of iTunes.  I am running Windows 7 64-bit on my Lenovo Laptop.  Long story/synopsis below...
It is being recognized in 'My Computer.'  It is recognized as "Removable Disk."  If I click on it, it then says "You need to format the disk in drive G [USB port its in] before you can use it".  Then asks me if I want to Format Disk or Cancel.  However, if I ask it to Format disk, it fails to do so every time.  After failing, it then says...
"Windows can't Format G...Check to see that disk and drive are connected properly, make sure that the disk is not read-only, and then try again.  For more information, search Help for read-only files and how to change them."
Can anyone provide some clarity on this statement?  Can I change its properties to read-only and will that work?
Again, my iPod is NOT being recognized in iTunes, so I cannot restore it.  I figured that would be my best solution at this point.  When I run Diagnostics in iTunes and run the "Device Connectivity Tests", it tells me all 3 Support Services are working/green amd 2 of the 3 Ports are working/green...the only not working/red item is "No iPod...found", which of course just means itunes cant recognize my iPod when plugged in...back to square 1.
Also, I came across the Apple page dedicated to troubleshooting an iPod that is NOT recognized in iTunes, but is recognized in My Computer.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1363?viewlocale=en_US
However, after exhausting all options listed here, my iTunes is still not recognizing my iPod.  I then tried uninstalling iTunes and all its component programs, e.g. Quicktime, Bonjour, Apple Device Services, etc. and reinstalling and this did not work.  I then tried plugging in my iPod into a friend's computer with latest version of iTunes and that didn't work either.
To provide a little more background on how I got here, my iPod was acting funky over the past 2 weeks...meaning it would be slow to response, random songs would freeze/not play, and then start playing again, or freeze altogether, then I'de have to reset my iPod by pressing Menu and middle-button...I was planning on restoring it yesterday just to fix its minor issues that at the time were just annoying...but as fate would have it, here I am now...
When I plugged it into my laptop to Restore it yesterday morning, it took a LOOONG time for iTunes to recognize it, then iTunes told me the iPod was corrupt and I should Restore it...well, being an ignorant peion that I am, I instead disconnected it and tried Resetting it again to see what that would do...it then was totally frozen, wouldnt respond to pressing Menu and middle button to Reset iPod, and wouldnt get recognized by iTunes or My Computer when I plugged it in...once the battery died, I was able to charge it up, all the music and files were gone, and I had to select a language...I then plugged it into my Laptop to see what would happen, and per above, here I am now with iTunes no longer able to recognize iPod, but My Computer can, and everything else per above.
I've tried EVERYTHING I can find under the sun to fix / Restore my iPod / get iTunes to recognize it.  Any last-ditch efforts from the Apple Community?  Again, I already exhausted all options I can think of / find, including per link above...http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1363?viewlocale=en_US....my hope is mebbe someone else here can provide another option that will magically work or can decipher what my Computer is telling me per above when it fails to Format my iPod.  Otherwise, this iPod is probably now FUBAR...
Hope that makes sense.  Please lemme know any thougts or questions.  you may have.  Thank you for your time.
    Dom

  • Ipod not recognized by itunes or laptop

i have an ipod touch 4g and i can't get it to be recognized by my sony vaio laptop.
i recently got a new laptop and just finished transferring my itunes library over to it.
i went to sync my ipod, but i had endless problems with my old and new library. long story short, i reset it completely.
on my ipod, i set everything back to their old settings and whatnot, but when i went to sync it, my ipod didnt show up in my computer or itunes.
i restarted, checked for updates, and all that with amds and itunes. i followed every suggestion from apple support, troubleshoot, and ran diagnostics from itunes. the diagnostics still say that there is not an ipod found.
on its own, my ipod functions correctly and recognizes to be charged from my usb port. itunes and windows wont recognize it though
is there anything else i can do? this is really frustrating me.
    thanks!

    - So you tried everthing here:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    - Does it charge?
    - Have you tried another cable?
    - Try a known good compuuter.
    - Reset the iPod, nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.
