IPod Not Recognized by PC After Update 2006-03-23

This is so frustrating- I was having sync lapses with iTunes, and the PC would "freeze" with the iPod connected to it, before Updater 2006-03-23 was run. After Updater was run, now the PC does not recognize the iPod at all. In fact, Updater 2006-03-23 does not even recognize the iPod. (It always asks to connect my iPod or says "Cannot mount iPod.") Assistance with this would be appreciated.

Hi Todd,
Welcome to Apple Discussions
You may want to look at Knowledge Base Document #61711 on iPod missing in "My Computer" or in iTunes on Windows and Knowledge Base Document #93499 on Windows confuses iPod with network drive and may keep iPod from mounting or songs may seem to disappear.

  • IPod not recognized in iTunes after update/restore

I was prompted by a message (don't remember the exact verbage) in iTunes to restore my iPod. It appeared to download and install an iPod update. Then when iTunes restarted, the iPod was no longer recognized by iTunes. The iPod still charges and iTunes still starts when it is plugged in but no devices are listed.
A connectivity test shows: iPod service is running, iTunes Helper is running, Apple Mobile Device is running. USB ports verified, FireWire (IEEE 1394) ports verified, iPod found. All tests passed.
The iPod is still visible in Windows but when I attempt to navigate into H:\iPod_Control\iTunes or H:\iPod_Control\Music I get the message: "(directory) is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupt and unreadable."
I have done the first 4 of the 5 R's; obviously not able to restore presently as the iPod is not recognized. I tried manually setting to disk mode- no luck. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes as well.
    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Hi. I had the exact same problem that you identified. I came across a tip somewhere to delete the contents of the pictures folder. When that didn't work for me I figured I'd go for broke and format the darn thing. From windows explorer I right clicked on the ipod volume (for me it was J: drive) and format. After I unplugged and replugged the usb cord, iTunes recognized the ipod again.
    Hope that helps.

  • Ipod not recognized by itunes after update

I received an error message upon attempting to sync my iPod after several months of not syncing.  I received an error message that if I didn't perform an update, I would lose all my apps.  The update took ~1 hour and to my dismay, reset my iPod to factory settings and wiped out all my apps.  I tried to sync it, and received an error message: "iTunes could not connect to this iPod touch,  An unknown error has occurred (0xE800000A).  I restarted my computer, but no luck.  iTunes is the latest version 11.0.4.4.   My computer is showing the iPod in devices.

I found a fix posted by jodicle with the error message as subject.   Thanks.

  • Yet another problem; iPod not recognized in windows after uninstall

So I'm still trying to fix my faulty iPod and now, after Apple telling me to uninstall and re-install the USB software, it is not recognized, when I plug my iPod in it comes up "installing software" then asks for a disk, thing is I was not given a disk with my iPod and I don't think iPod touch uses a disk either anyway.
This is really irritating as I think I have a solution to my original problem and now it's doing this...
    Any help ?

    Thank you
    I actually managed to fix it this way;
My laptop (Advent Roma) decided to freeze all USB ports so after restoring my laptop back to how it was on the 27th (Last week) I re-installed iTunes and put my iPod cable back in, it installed again but this time appeared in iTunes, it still won't restore but I'm glad it's recognized again

  • IPhone not recognized by iTunes after update

I recently downloaded & installed the latest update for iTunes and it actually removed iTunes and put and extra (& useless) shortcut for quicktime in my desktop. I uninstalled everything and reinstalled iTunes and quicktime with nor problem. I hooked up the iPhone and downlaoded the latest update for it as well and it crashed during the installation of it. I have since had to reboot on my roomates pc and it will not be come up in iTunes. My computer still recognizes it though. I have gone through all the steps in apples site and microsoft and have no clue what to do now. I use this thing all day every day and need the music and video capablities for "work" purposes. If anyone can help, thanks.

    Symptoms:
iPhone not recognized by iTunes on Windows computer, however an iPod will.
The iPhone CAMERA appears in windows My Computer - but nowhere else.
    Problem:
The Apple iPhone Driver has been replaced by a Microsoft Driver which enables the camera/storage, but did not allow it to connect with iTunes.
    SOLUTION:
From Device Manager, Select the iPhone (under imaging/Portable Devices) and then select "Update Driver", Don't direct it to automatically search for a driver, instead, manually point it to search in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers - It should then "do it's thing" and install the correct apple driver - voila - iPhone is then recognized.

  • IPhone 3GS is not recognized by iTunes after update 10.1.1

Was updating my iPhone (4.2.1) as well as iTunes 3 days ago.
When I connect the iPhone to the computer and open iTunes it's not recognized.
    The computer regognizes the hareware.
Yesterday during the process of syncing the error "cannot sync because there is no connection to the iPhone" popped up.
I hope this is the right catergory... but please help.
I already tried the reinstallation of iTunes.

I have the same problem with my iPhone 4 - since updating to iTunes 10.1.1 I my iPhone is not recognised by iTunes. I have reinstalled and done all of Apple's suggestions up to the point of messing with the deep settings in Windows (I'm not confident that I won't mess up other things if I do this). The computer recognises the iPhone but iTunes ignores it. Come on Apple - how about a simple fix that doesn't require a nerdy ability to delve into the depths of software settings!

  • IPod not recognized by windows after iTunes update

After my iTunes 6.0 update, my computer (running on Windows XP) suddenly won't recognize my iPod. It says "Does not recognize USB device," and "no driver found". When I connect my iPod to my laptop (which still has iTunes 4.0 installed) it is recognized fine. What should I do? There are some songs on my PC that I do not have on my iPod, and I don't want to lose them by completely uninstalling iTunes. Help!

Oddest thing happened...I have actually redownloaded iTunes and clicked repair before, and it didn't work. But I just did it again and suddenly my computer recognized the iPod again. It did give me some kind of error talking about how the playlist count was corrupted, but that doesn't bother me very much since I can connect and update again.

  • Ipod not recognized by windows, the updater, or itunes

I have a click wheel ipod, that i've had for little more then a year now. Recently, my itunes when i started it, told me i had to update it's software, which i did, problem solved. However, now my ipod won't update, and i cannot put any songs on it. In fact, my ipod deleted all of it's songs off of itself, and now it won't be recognized in any of my applications, windows, the newest updater (6/28/2006), or my itunes. Whenever i connect my ipod to my computer, my computer recognizes that I have connected a mass storage device via usb, however, when i start the ipod updater and it tells me to plug it in, it doesn't recognize the ipod connected. Itunes also does not recognize the ipod is plugged in. Please help, I have tried all your remedies on this site to no avail (the 5 R's).
    Thanks,
    Brian

That is EXACTLY what has happened to mine. I have been on web tech support for 2 days; nothing works. I called Best Buy and talked to tech guy: explained the problem to him and he said it was a hard drive gone bad. He also said that Apple changed their policies and does not still allow them to do any more than just reset the iPod; otherwise it has to be sent back to Apple.
If you get an answer that really helps, I'd love to hear it!!

  • IPod not recognized by Windows, previously updated once on Mac

I've had this 30gb iPod for about a week, and have only been able to update it once.
I updated it on my sister's iBook for convinence, and when I tried to update it on my Compaq Presario, it didn't recognize it and will only charge after I have reset it.
I have tried the Rs many times, installed the iPod updater (which does not recognize when the iPod is plugged in, so I can't even erase the memory), installed all of the necessary software and all of my USB ports are 2.0.
I have no idea what to do now that I have seemingly tried everything. Please help me!
    compaq presario   Windows XP

I have the exact same problem I called Apple tech support they didn't really tell me anything that isn't already on the support site. Then they did tell me to go to an apple store and try it on one of their computer and they will probably give me a new ipod but i still think it won't work on my computer.
I had my ipod hooked up to my brothers xp machine, usb 1.1 which he uses for his nano and everything worked fine. I think it has to do with something with the usb drivers. When i plug in the ipod in device manager its says Unkown device under usb controllers. I tried updating these drivers and nothing worked. I even had my brother give me the drivers off his maching which were for the usbstor.sys and usbstor.inf files which are for the usb mass storage devices which his nano shows up as.
If anyone figured this out please help me before i have to driver to the apple store this weekend.

  • IPod not recognized by iTunes after multiple restorations...

It appears that I'm not the only one getting the problem where iTunes tells you to restore the iPod touch multiple times and then stops recognizing that the iPod is not connected. The iPod itself is not responding to the restoration. Once the restoration is complete (the first time) iTunes tells me to restore the iPod. After two or three times, iTunes stops recognizing that the iPod is connected. The iPod itself displays the silver apple that appears when you turn on the device. I've been looking at all the troubleshooting topics and I've tried about everything, with no avail. What do I do now?

  • IPOD NOT CONNECTING TO WIFI AFTER UPDATING TO IOS 8.1.3

I recently updated my ipod touch to ios 8.1.3. after which it stopped connecting to my wifi device saying password is incorrect. Needless to say password was correct and other devices were connecting fine. I restarted device, tried connecting it with other wifi devices (it didnt connect to other devices either) , i reset network setting , erased all contents and reset setting and finally restored ipod to factory setting using itunes but problem is still persisting.. Now I have an ipod without wifi which is pretty useless. Need your help in this regard

Does the iOS device connect to other networks? If yes that tends to indicate a problem with your network.
Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Iphone not recognized in iTunes after update problem

I tried to update my iPhone 4 through iTunes to the recent update, but my computer crashed in the middle of the update. Now when it restarted, my iphone only has the connect to iTunes picture on the screen and when I plug it into my computer it makes the noise recognizing it's plugged in, but iTunes won't recognize it. How can I get it to recognize the iPhone then finish the update?

I had the exact same thing happen to me, I was able to get the phone to work, but it will not connect to the computer.

  • IPod not working on iPhone after update to iTunes

Since updating to the newer version if iTunes only some of my album artwork has been downloaded and the iPod just skips through sings continuously without playing any? Any help appreciated :)

Harddrive crashed a month ago. Replaced the drive and now the airport/browsing is very moody. If I turn airport off and then turn it on, it will render the first page, but then any further browsing never renders a page or renders a page after several minutes with many of the page elements missing. I can ping yahoo, google and other sites that I am going to, but browsing in Safari and Opera yields the same results. The network is working as my PC computer is accessing the network. The mac mini can see the network, but only when I start and stop the airport can I hope to get to a web page. The mac mini cannot even get to the network router unless I turn airport off and then on again. Help.

  • IPod not recognized by iMac after plugging it into Windows computer by mistake!

    Hi there:
I'm hoping someone can help me fix my husband's iPod.
It is normally synced to the iMac computer, but for some reason today he decided to plug it into his laptop, which runs Windows (grrrrrr).
The library was erased on the iPod. He doesn't remember a prompt saying that if he went ahead, the iPod would be erased.
Now when it is plugged into the iMac, it doesn't even recognize the iPod; it appears on the desktop as an icon "No Name" and says it is formatted in MS-DOS. Can I get it back to behaving properly, like an Apple??
Thanks for any suggestions you can provide.
    kris

    Hello again:
I'm getting closer. I did erase and reformat the iPod as you suggested, and it now reads as a Mac OS X formatted iPod. However, I still can't get iTunes to recognize it. It did, one time - and I got all the prompts to restore it, but after several tries with the wrong password (aargghh) the window went away and I can't get it back.
I've reset the iPod; I've put it into disk mode; I've tried both my husband's iTunes screen and my own; I've restarted the computer several times; I've plugged the iPod in using a different USB port.
I'm hoping that you have some more words of wisdom for me, because now that I've gotten this far I refuse to give up!
    Thank you!
    Kris
