Ipod not recognized in windows vista nor in itunes

İ need help. İ have tried the 5 r's. Since neither my computer nor itunes will recognize my ipod*, İ can not complete the restore. İ have downloaded the update from vista, still to no avail. İ don't know what else to do. since one definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting the same results, after hours of going through all the steps again and agian, this **** ipod is driving me insane.
* İ have had two brief periods when itunes did recognize my ipod unexpectedly. on those two occasions, it began the sync, but got stuck on a couple of music files and then would not complete the sync, leaving only two songs on my ipod to listen to. İ tried deleting those files it seemed to get stuck on, but then, it(itunes nor my computer) has never recognized my ipod since.

I have a suggestion on that, Cindy.
I've had a couple of friends that own a Gateway. And they've experienced the same problem, hence the fact(I Think) because the drivers for the USB that are installed with Vista are outdated,
but I don't think thats the case since the Gateway has all of its devices (USB ports) running correctly.
My next thought would be to do what I did:
A few months back I realized I cannot have my Ipod and any External HDD Connected simultaniously, since it seems that there are confilcts if I connected them together.
In other words, try temporarly copying your Music folder into your PC( if you have a good amount of space, then try going to Itunes>Edit>Preferences>Advanced
NOTE: if you have space, you can directly copy you music into the folder that Itunes is told to retrieve the songs from.
THere you'll see that itunes has a preset or default Itunes Music Folder location, Set it to the folder that you copied(if you were able to) which contains the music.
NOTE: if you have space, you can directly copy you music into the folder that Itunes is told to retrieve the songs from.
Hope this Helps!!

  • Ipod not recognized my Windows vista or itunes

I have an older click wheel ipod (2004) and I recently got a new computer with vista. Since then I have not been able to sync my ipod because it does not register as being connected. All of the songs I had on it worked just fine through the head phones and the dock, and so in my desperation (following the 5 Rs) I tried to restore it. I synced my ipod with a mac and it restored just fine, then I synced it with my pc and it actually recognized it?!! I went through the restore, and that worked, but I could not transfer songs to it. I just went from having a mostly working ipod, to one that seems to work with no songs on it. Arrgh. Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

  • Ipod not recognized in Windows and locks up iTunes

When I connect my ipod to my pc with itunes open it does not recognize it as an ipod most times, other times it says that it needs to be reformatted to windows. Then it usually locks up itunes. If I connect the ipod first, windows thinks its a removable usb storage device not an ipod. Then if I try and start itunes after it is connected, itunes does not come up on the screen but the process is running in task manager.
I have hooked the ipod up to other pcs with no issues. I have tried the 5 R's and have gone as far as to reformat my pc and load itunes first. Still the same problems! I have talked to support and they were also unable to help.
Only twice has it every connected and been recognized, initially after the reimage and the very first time, but that its.
    Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks

Happened to me. Read through this fully before you try any of it.
What i did was go to >start
    Settings>adminstration tools>computer management.
From in here go to disk management under the storage option the right. A list of all the connect hard drives will show. There will be two partitions for your ipod, one will be unallocated, ignore this as its the firmware. The other partition should have the size of your drive on it and say (Healthy). If it doesn't format this partition only! If it does show up reset it by pressing menu and select together. Then i put it into disc mode. The pc show see it now.
What i did next was to remove the ipod, reset, put it into disc mode and let Itunes recognise it. Don't load anything onto it.
Go to the restore button and restore the firmware.
That's what i did and it's working again.
If it doesn't help I am really sorry and email apple directly.

  • Ipod not recognized by windows, the updater, or itunes

I have a click wheel ipod, that i've had for little more then a year now. Recently, my itunes when i started it, told me i had to update it's software, which i did, problem solved. However, now my ipod won't update, and i cannot put any songs on it. In fact, my ipod deleted all of it's songs off of itself, and now it won't be recognized in any of my applications, windows, the newest updater (6/28/2006), or my itunes. Whenever i connect my ipod to my computer, my computer recognizes that I have connected a mass storage device via usb, however, when i start the ipod updater and it tells me to plug it in, it doesn't recognize the ipod connected. Itunes also does not recognize the ipod is plugged in. Please help, I have tried all your remedies on this site to no avail (the 5 R's).
    Thanks,
    Brian

That is EXACTLY what has happened to mine. I have been on web tech support for 2 days; nothing works. I called Best Buy and talked to tech guy: explained the problem to him and he said it was a hard drive gone bad. He also said that Apple changed their policies and does not still allow them to do any more than just reset the iPod; otherwise it has to be sent back to Apple.
If you get an answer that really helps, I'd love to hear it!!

    Hello Judy,
It's impossible to sync your iPod if it is not being recognized in iTunes.  I found a few resources that I think will help with this issue.
I recommend starting with the steps in this tutorial:
iPod nano not appearing in iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipodnano/assistant/itunes/
If you are still getting the same error code after following those steps, I recommend the following article (you can skip any steps you have already taken):
iPod not recognized in 'My Computer' and in iTunes for Windows

Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.

  • 5th Gen Ipod not recognized by windows or itunes. Have tried it all. Any Ideas?

Hello everyone. I have a 5th generation Ipod I recently purchased that I'm having what seems to be an common issue. When I connect the ipod to my computer via USB, the Ipod is not recognized in windows or Itunes. Occasionally the Ipod will charge when connected but not always. Though this is the same for the old wire I used and the new one I purchased today. Even when shown charging the Ipod is not recognized and there is no noise that a device has been connected. I have tried the 4 R's (without Restore) which I can't do, chaninging the drive letter, disabling start up software, uninstalling and reinstalling all Apple Software. I have tried connecting to another computer and have gotten the same result. When I check the diagnostic screen on the ipod it shows that a usb cable is detected. I have upgraded all my driver software, disabled and reenabled them. I'm almost 3 hours from the nearest store so that it out of the question. I'm curious if anyone has any other ideas and will try anything you think might be the issue and fix. Thank you for time.

From my experience, the only way you're gonna get a PC afflicted with this disease to work with a 5th gen nano is to roll back to an earlier version of iTunes.  Those affected have been exhausted by this ongoing issue.  To update or not to update?  And I always say never update unless you have to, and turn off all that auto update mess!
I have two core2duo lappies running 32b vista.  My workflow dictates 32b fyi.  One is acer aspire running itunes v 11.1 (.0.126),  5th gen nano was originally formatted and works just fine on this machine to this day.  My other is the bigger badder lenovo thinkpad and the 5th gen will NOT mount using any version of itunes past 11.0 (.1.12)  Windows mounts it just fine.  itunes is not having it.  no shirt no shoes no service.
I have both a 4th and 5th gen nano.  The 4th gen works great on both machines, I even successfully tested it with the latest version (11.1.5) before subsequent deletion on the thinkpad!  Weird huh?  I think my next experiment might be to restore my 5th gen w/ a Mac and theeeeen plug it into PC itunez.
I'm at a loss on the thinkpad.  Scanned for intruders.  Cut the Lenovo bloat.  Executed system and reg maintenance.  Took down msconfig to a safe mode + itunes level to attempt to resolve possible sw conflicts but to no avail.  NO NO NO.  Every single dang port, every time on the thinkpad.  Has me feeling like others might get the same treatment by the next itunes update.  :|
    So in summary for me:
5th gen nano and thinkpad are a NoGo on 11.1^  last working version for me = 11.0.1
5th gen nano is working on an acer aspire 11.1.0  but no way in the world am I updating
4th gen nano is kicking 5th gen nano's @zz so what would make me want to buy a new ipod?

  • Ipod not recognized by windows, itunes, and will not charge with pc.

yesterday, when i went to sync some new music onto my 1gen nano, it did not work (duh). i plugged it in 3 times:
-1st, it displayed the "do not connect screen" for one second, and itunes flashed the screen it shows when your ipod is connected, but then the ipod disconnected itself after that one second.
-2nd, windows gave me a message saying the hardware could not be recognized.
-3rd, nothing at all happened, as has been happening each time i try to plug it in since then.
i've done the 5 R's .. and i've tried all the suggestions shown on posts that sound like mine, including these: Windows XP cannot detect an iPod.
USB drivers are not installed properly or are out of date.
iTunes 7 doesn't recognize the iPod.
my ipod will charge when plugged into a wall charger, and it plays normally. also, my brother's ipod (2nd gen nano) is recognized by windows/itunes.

    Hello
I have been having nearly the same problem as Crashcup for the past month. Differences being I am operating with Windows Vista and my iPod is a 160GB Classic. I have gone through all the steps in the troubleshooting documents to no result. I attach my iPod and it is not recognized by Windows, iTunes or even in Device Manager. Not even as an "Unknown Device".
I know there is nothing wrong with the USB ports as two different external hard drives and a video game controller work perfectly fine through them. Same goes with the iPod itself; it continues to play and function normally, and is recognized by a charging device completely separate from my laptop. Just when attached to the computer there is no sign of it.
I am very frustrated that there is no further instruction with regard to what to do with an iPod Classic (as referred to by Crashcup: "...it says to take a photo with an iPhone, or a screenshot with an iPod touch or iPad. WHAT ABOUT THE IPOD CLASSIC????)
Any help would be much appreciated.l=

  • IPod not recognized by Windows Xp.. Out of ideas

I've had my iPod for about a year now.. I've never been able to operate it off of my computer, yet it works fine on any other computer I've used it on.. I can charge it off of my computer..
My iTunes- I can download music/movies fine.. Listen to them.. Everything seems to be working ok..
    Problem:
My iPod is not being recognized by the Computer, nor by iTunes obviously.. I've spent hours and hours trying to solve this, going through all the suggested guides and what not.. None of them have seemed to work.. When I connect my iPod to the usb-port (any port, I've tried them all..) the iPod appears under 'Other Devices' with a yellow questionmarc/exclamation marc.. I am unable to do anything with it on my computer..
A friend thought that maybe I was missing a driver..? Idk.. If you have any clue as to whats wrong with my set-up.. Feel free to email me or whatever, I will check this post periodically for solutions..
    Thanks,
    Matt

  • IPod not recognized by Windows / iTunes

    Hello,
I hope someone here can help. So far my first experience with Apple support has NOT been a positive impression.
I searched for info on this problem, but the other ones I see all seem to be related to freezing or battery issues.
iPod Classic 120GB, I don't sync very often, and just finished doing a bunch of cleanup in iTunes (album artwork, song info, etc.) and want to re-sync the pod.
When I connect to the PC with the USB cable, Windows doesn't seem to recognize the device, and it doesn't show up in iTunes.
It is charging through USB, however. The battery is fully charged.
I tried 3 different USB ports on the PC.
    Tried restarting iTunes.
    Tried restarting the computer.
Went to Apple support website, tried the troubleshooting assistant:
    Reset the pod.
*Had already tried different USB ports.
*Had already trired restarting the PC (Although it mentions checking for the latest software updates - I didn't do this. WHAT software updates should I look for? Device drivers? OS updates? WHAT???)
    Re-installed iTunes. (Was already at v 9.2.1.4)
*Did not try the restore. Reading the instructions, it appears that the iPod has to be connected to do this, and that's the problem -won't connect!
Also read something about disk mode. I set the iPod to disk mode, but it's not recognized that way, either. When connected by USB in this mode, the iPod screen still says "OK to disconnect".
I tried the link "iPhone, iPad, or iPod is not recognized by Windows".
I do not see the "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver" anywhere in Device Manager. I suppose this is the problem.
However, continuing with the instructions, it says to take a photo with an iPhone, or a screenshot with an iPod touch or iPad. WHAT ABOUT THE IPOD CLASSIC?????
(These instructions also say to disconnect the device, but nowhere says when to connect it. Why do they put half-baked troubleshooting instructions on their web site???)
Is there anyone from Apple support on this list who can help? I believe the driver needs to be reinstalled somehow, but it didn'thappen when i re-installed iTunes, so how do I do this?
    Thanks
    Keith

  • Ipod not recognized by windows or itunes

OK here's a humdinger: my ipod used to be recognized by my computer (meaning Windows XP), but then abruptly stopped in a catastrophic meltdown that completely wiped my ipod of everything -- didn't even show the menu. Fastforward, ipod is replaced. Windows will still not recognize it -- most of the time. The toolbar says USB device detected and hardware installed and ready to use, but the message that it's not recognized by Windows still appears. Now I said it was recognized sometimes. When it magically is (this is my only description for it because there is no apparent reason), and this is rare, usually after the computer has been turned off for awhile, the ipod will sync through about a fifth of my library then quit. The "disc cannot be found" message appears, and Windows stops recognizing and I'm back to square one. One would think that I now at least have a fifth of my songs on the ipod. Nope, just one for each time this has happened (being 2). Please do not respond with anything having to do with updating or uninstalling/reinstalling drivers, disabling USB 2.0, searching for E:\ drive, Windows Update, the whole appleipod.bat thing, updating itunes, or scanning for new hardware as I have tried these and a few other solutions. I'm just wondering if I'm completely, well, you know. Thanks for your time.
