IPod not recognized properly...

Hello everyone,
I recently bought an ipod 3g nano. When I plug it in to my computer, it briefly shows up on my desktop before automatically ejecting. Itunes starts up and displays the error message, ""An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPod, then try again"
I follow the steps to no avail. I am using the latest version of itunes, 7.4.2.
I have troubleshooted by plugging it into a friends MacBook, where it works just fine. I was able to restore and use the ipod normally.
I cannot try and restore on my computer because the ipod won't appear on the source list. I have tried resetting as well.
Since I was able to get it to work on my friends macbook, does this mean its an powerbook or itunes problem? I checked my software updates, have the most recent version of itunes, etc. Can this be a USB port issue?
Please help!!!!! I am music deprived and heartbroken that I cannot troubleshoot such a problem on my own.

Try using a different usb port.

  • IPod "not recognized properly" by 7.4.1: What to do?

I updated to iTunes 7.4.1 this AM and after the update, plugged in my iPod (3G, with click wheel) and got the "do not disconnect" screen and this message:
"An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPod, then try again." After I click OK, the "charging" screen appears.
I have not been able to recover from this or to get my iPod to sync. I have tried:
    1. Disconnecting & reconnecting the iPod with the dock, without the dock, to the same USB port, to a different USB port.
    2. Resetting the iPod.
    3. Reinstalling iTunes 7.4.1 by downloading it from the Apple site, rather than doing so through Software Update.
    4. Repairing permissions.
I haven't tried replacing the USB cable, because the one I have worked a couple of days ago, the last time I sync'ed, with 7.4. I don't have a firewire cable that works, so I can't try that.
    Questions:
    1. What does that error message really mean?
    2. What can I do that I haven't already done, to make my iPod sync to iTunes 7.4.1?
    3. Should I go back to a prior version of iTunes? Where would I find it on Apple's site?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Seriously, something's been wrong with my iPod too, since I downloaded the 7.4 iTunes... although I've been experiencing some wierd things before the 7.4. I have a one GIG, 1.3.1 iPod nano, and it was detected just fine with the iTunes on the CD my nano came with. Later with the next update, though, my black nano (on iTunes) turned to a white nano. And so I just dismissed this as just a minor technical difficulty, but then on the next update my nano was recognized as like one of the regular iPods; the version before the "iPod Classic." Then on the next, it was being shown (on my iTunes 'Ipod Summary')as that very first nasty looking iPod.
But my music was still all good, these were just aesthetic difficulties. And then i got the message that, "oh there are these new updates for iTunes, would you like to download?" and i just kept refusing them; i didn't want to see my iPod nano demeaned again. But just yesterday I finally decided to stop avoiding it and I updated my iTunes.
What happened was that I got this message that said, "Oh, well the playlist requires you need 946.7 mB and you only have 896 mB [i wonder why they say 1 gig if it doesnt reach 1000 mB X_X]. Would you like to make a selection-playlist to transfer to your iPod [or something]" so i chose, okay. I only have 880 mB of songs in my iTunes, so I was wondering what was up... But then that's about the time when I got that message:
"An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPod, then try again."
So then I looked into "About iTunes" in my Windows XP Start, and I read:
"With iTunes 7.4, sync your favorite music and more with the new iPod nano (third generation), iPod classic, and iPod touch..."
Here's where i first discovered the new, 3rd generation iPod. Given that the "about" document says that it focuses on the "New iPod nano", and all the other fancy hardware, I think that Apple Company just made my 1.3.1 nano useless... since the new nano has a whole new user interface and stuff, it would need more mB for it (just as my message told me; i need "946.7 mB").
This is what I think... and i hate that my 2-year old nano is like broken now. Now when i plug it in, it doesn't even show up in the 7.4 iTunes. Only my windows recognizes it. And then this weird thing happens where the nice sharpness and color of my nano turns plain black and white; showing not a red and clean "do not"-sign like it used to, but a black and white one in cheap resolution, like the retro-verson iPods. I managed to fool around with it a couple of times and i got caught in a series of "warning" windows:
    (1) "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes." -- i click "Ok"
    (2) i click "restore"
    (3) "iTunes could not contact the iPod software update server because you are not connected to the internet. Make sure your internet connection is active and try again. Would you like to restore with the same version as your iPod has now [version 1.3.1] instead?" -- I click "Use same version"
    (4) "Are you sure you want to restore iPod "iPod" (it was originally called "shona" b4 i updated my iTunes) to its factory setting? All of your songs and other data will be erased (even though it was already erased since my first "not recognized" message)." -- i click "restore"
    (5) "Your iPod has been restored...it will reappear in window... this message will close in 15 seconds." lol i couldn't write all of this one down. -- the window closes. AND so then my iPod seems back to normal (again; i had already done this once before), and it is showing me if i want my language in Enlgish, Dutch, etc... and then.....
    (6) "An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPod, then try again."
But at least it's not stuck in the retro-style form; i can navigate through the 1.3.1 nano interface. I felt i had to log my experience down... I wonder how long has 7.4.1 iTunes been out?? It seems like my 1.3.1 nano isn't the only one affected by the new iTunes... i think it is because it focuses on the new iPods: Nano 3rd Gen.; iPod Classic...
Before all this; i uninstalled the 7.4.1 iTunes, installed the 6.0-something iTunes that came with my 1.3.1 nano to see if i was right to suspect that. However, even with the 6.0 iTunes, my 1.3.1 nano didn't work; i got a message saying that it was "corrupted." although i still point to 7.4 for this. then i re-updated to 7.4, and that's where my story here began.
Does anyone have an explanation for what has happened to my 1.3.1 iPod? Is it out of date? I'm probably going to get the newer nano... at a later time, like next year. Until then, I really need my music =[

    Hello Judy,
It's impossible to sync your iPod if it is not being recognized in iTunes.  I found a few resources that I think will help with this issue.
I recommend starting with the steps in this tutorial:
iPod nano not appearing in iTunes

If you are still getting the same error code after following those steps, I recommend the following article (you can skip any steps you have already taken):

  • Ipod not recognized in Itunes or in windows.

I've been able to unfreeze my Ipod and restore and update the software using my laptop. However, my desktop, still does not recognize my IPOD nor does ITUNES on my desktop. I've read and followed the directions for what to do when this happens. Still it has not made a difference. Both of these computers use Windows XP and so I am baffled by the fact that my laptop worked easily and the other (my desktop) won't work with my IPOD at all. My music library is on my desktop and I'm disappointed that I can't access this.
    Suggetions or explanations?

    Hi Karen,
It's a bit unusual that a laptop would be recognizing an iPod better than a desktop (usually, it's vice versa).
That indicates that this might be a USB connection issue.
Are you sure that your computer's USB drivers are up-to-date? If they are already updated, then you may need to reinstall those drivers.
See this Knowledge Base article for details on that:

  • IPod not recognized (but with other symptoms than on the help pages)

    Hey people,
My iPod is not recognized by windows (vista). I did take a look on the help pages, but nothing helps.
When I connect my iPod, after a minute or so I get a message from windows saying "Do you want to check and repair the IPOD OF JASPER?" (sorry for the translation, I actually get the message in dutch). Then I can choose of two options, yes or no...
When I click yes, it gives an error 'Could not be completed because the disk is not ready.'.
When I click no, I get a message from iTunes saying 'iPod could net be recognized, please disconnect and try again.'
Yesterday, it did show up in iTunes, but then iTunes immediately froze and my explorer (taskbar/windows explorer) too. I had to turn off the computer by pressing and holding the off/on button...
What's even weirder; When I initially installed this iPod, it all worked. I put music on it, all fine. Then the second time i connected it, this things mentioned above happened. Then a few days ago, it suddenly connected in the right way. And now it isn't anymore....
    Anyone please help?!
I hope this is not any of those stupid security things of vista....

  • IPod not recognized by computer - folder icon

    Hi.
I have a 3rd generation iPod that displays the folder icon with the exclamation mark when I try to start it. If I hook it to my computer, the icon changes to the "OK to disconnect" message, and it indicates that it is in "Disk Mode". If I disconnect, the iPod freezes and, when resetting, the cycle starts over.
I would like to restore the iPod but, unfortunately, my computer never 'sees' it (neither in iTunes nor as a disk), so there is nothing I can do to bring it to a point where I can try to do something with it.
Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Ipod not recognized by itunes, why?

I got a new Ipod and it is not recognized by Itunes. I have reinstalled itunes. I have tried to reset the ipod. It also does not show up on Windows Explorer. I tried changing things in the MSCONFIG file and it still did not work. The USB ports work and I have checked that by plugging in an external HD. Any suggestions?

  • My ipod not recognized by the computer or itunes?

Ok, the iPod works fine playing music and watching videos and everything else it is supposed to, and it charges fine. But when i plug it up my PC to sync new music, the screen on the iPod does like normal and goes to the gray and orangeish screen that says Connected, then immediately says Disconnecting iPod and shows the little progress bar as if you had ejected it. How can it do this on it's own before anything has recognized it?
I have done everything that the Support on here has said, the 5 r's and all that, and nothing. Checked device manager on my computer and it actually says that is is plugged up and recognized, but has a yellow exclamation point beside it. The properties of it says this error...
"Windows cannot use this hardware device because it has been prepared for "safe removal", but it has not been removed from the computer. (Code 47)"
These errors occurred two days again until now, i have made no recent updates on my computer or iPod to have damaged anything but these problems randomly occur. it's really odd and if someone could help me it would be great.

Have you carefully worked through each and every suggestion in this Apple support document?

  • Ipod not recognized anymore

My old laptop used to recognize my ipod using usb but only when it was fully charged and even then it would only recognize it some of the time. It also wouldn't ever charge through my computer and the ipod updater never worked. Eventually, that computer stopped recognizing it all together and I didn't even get the do not disconnect screen. In the meantime, I picked up a new laptop thinking maybe I had bad usb connections but I still have the same problem. I have lost all of my music files off of Itunes (due to my own fault of reinstalling windows without backing up my files thinking that might fix) but still have them on my ipod. Is there any way to back up my ipod and how do I restore it (or back it up) when it isn't recognized my my PC? I have tried new cables etc. and am convinced the problem is with my ipod. Any ideas?
