IPod not reconizable - Tried everything (OSX)!!

I am having the same problem that many people are having with their iPod's: It will not show up on the desktop, in iTunes, or in iPod updater. I've tried the the 5 R's, I've put it disk mode and reconnected, I've even trashed iTunes and used the older iPod updaters (all on both a G5 and G4).
I've actually gotten lucky at one point and an iPod updater recognized it, so I tried to restore it and it froze at about 25% during the restore. This happened twice and haven't gotten it to recognize since.
It seems like most of the resolutions I've seen (aside from taking it apart or to an Apple store) have been for windows users.
Any suggestions?!!! Alwyas loved Apple products but this seems ridiculous.
Thanks...

Have a read then
Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
Intermediate Level
A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
For Mac computer
1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
Tips
a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

Advance Level
A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
Last Resort Level
1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

I am not suggesting that you should follow as well, but just read them as your reference. You are the person to make the call.
Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote

  • Ipod nano, I can see it in windows but not itunes, Tried EVERYTHING!

    Please help.
Starting a few weeks ago my six month old ipod stopped being 'seen' by itunes. I can see it on explorer no problem. I have followed all the steps in the support pages, apart from re-installing windows.
However I have found it doesn't work on my main computer of either of my two laptops, which makes me thinks its an ipod problem NOT a computer/windows problem.
I have a shuffle which is working fine on itunes on the same computers.
The only thing I cannot do is restore the nano - because you need an itunes connection to do this.
    Can anyone help please?
Ipod Nano.   Windows XP   itunes 7.02.16

At least I'm not alone in this problem...
I'm in the same boat. My Nano did work with iTunes 7 for a while. The only glitch was that it couldn't update the iPod's software. Since it stopped appearing in iTunes a few weeks ago I've tried everything I can think of (except sending it away) to fix the problem (restart/reset, reinstall iTunes (6 & 7), check services, format comp., change drive letter, etc...). It won't appear in iTunes on other computers either. Further I've run the iPod diagnostics and everything gets a green light. Hardware, software, me? I haven't a clue as to what the problem is. Argh.
I like the music on my iPod but it would be nice if I could listen to something different! I'll have a chance to stop by the store it came from soon but in the mean time...does anybody out there have ideas?

  • Not connecting tried everything!

Hi, just recently out of the blue my ipod touch connection stopped working it will not connect to anything including itunes, safari, appstore , and all internet apps. I've looked at other posts that are similar and i tried everything including reset router, reset internet connections , sync on itunes. It hasent been working on the internet for now 3 days. It shows at the top 3 bars and says its connected but when i go on itunes, safari, applestore etc it says: cannont connect to itunes store invalid arguments etc. router is fine works on laptops, xbox. Please help very confushed. thanks.

If it shows you are connected but can't get anything, tap Settings > WiFi > and then the blue ">" next to the network name with the check mark. What is your device IP address?
If it starts with 169.x.x.x, then your router is not issuing your touch a valid IP address. It may work fine with your other devices and still not work with your touch. If you are using WEP, it could be the way you chose to implement it. Either switch to WPA2 or use the master WEP key in place of your password.
If you are not using WEP, then check the manufacturer's website for your router and see if a firmware update is available for your model. If there is one, download and update. If not, you may want to consider trying out another router. Before you go that far, go some place that has free WiFi and make sure you can connect to the web and the apps you want.

  • IPhone 4 will not restore - TRIED EVERYTHING

So I have a multitude of issues with my iPhone 4 and after trying a multitude of fixes that I could find, no change.
Here are the issues I'm currently facing:
    - iPhone will not turn on whlie NOT connected to power source
    - When connected to computer, iPhone will display apple logo then switch off then back again continuously
    - I can put the phone into recovery mode (with itunes logo and cable display on screen) but am unable to put into dfu mode (I've tried everything)
    - when put into recovery mode, iTunes will recognize a general iPhone 4 connection and prompts to initiate a recovery
    - iPhone only registers with iTunes not with computer
    - Recovery yields either error 21 or error 3194
    I have tried:
    - Tinyumbrella: iPhone shows up under "Recovery Devices" with a question mark and a series of random numbers
    - altering host file
    - all manner of restore in iTunes
Is there ANYTHING else I can do to fix this **** thing?

What I would do is run an anti spyware scan / anti virus scan with the iPhone connected to the computer. This way all of your files from both an be checked. It sounds like you have a Trojan that often causes computers of any type to force a shutdown and go into a reboot mode. My guess is you might have had this occur recently on a computer you linked to. If not it may have come from a shareware program or a download you've recently installed. You can down load all of your iPhone files to your computer, run the scans, disconnect your iPhone before file deletion sir scrubs , reset to company settings/ default mode then plug it back in so you can re download your files once they've been scrubbed. If this doesn't work try to disable the location off mode and redo everything again. This way your privacy settings might block or scramble the malware or virus that's tracing your device through your computer. This is the best advice I have. Web root Spysweeper will destroy anything and use a full based line antivirus program. If you connect your device to a work computer chances are it came through an email while it was connected. At any rate good luck and this is the best home remedy I can come up with. iPhones aren't supposed to be inflicted because they don't run on most active x programs, but if a file you're using does that may be your intersection point.

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
what do you see when iPhoto tries to open?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

  • Folder Actions will not work - tried everything

Recently Folder Actions simply stopped working on 10.6.4. They worked fine before then recently just stopped working.
I've tried everything I can think of, including:
    1. completely removing enabling & disabling & enabling folder actions through the setup app.
    2. trashing folder actions plist files in user domain and relaunching
    3. disabling related launchd processes with lingon
    4. trashing launch agents in user domain and also trying to unload them in terminal
    5. trying to kill the folder actions dispatcher process in activity monitor (just relaunches, as it should)
    6. emptying system caches including dyld shared cache using cocktail
    7. doing most of the above and restarting

I finally go Folders Action to work, after being unable to use it even for a simple beep for years now.
    Here is what I did:
    1. Changed permissions to 755 for the following folder and two contained files (note that 775 didn't work for me)
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.FolderActions.enabled.plist
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.FolderActions.folders.plist
    2. Changed the following lines within ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.FolderActions.enabled.plist (using TextWrangler)
    from:
    <key>OnDemand</key>
    <false/>
    to:
    <key>OnDemand</key>
    <true/>
Prior to the permissions changes within #1 above, the value of <true/> kept getting changed back to <false/> by something in the system... and though
there was improvement by the permissions changes, the following console message appeared until false was changed to true.
    com.apple.FolderActions.enabled[4127] launchctl: Error unloading: com.apple.FolderActions.folders
At this point true is staying true, and not being changed by unknown forces to false, and the above message is not appearing.
    3. The only other thing I did prior to #1 and #2 above, was to run the script (unsaved),
tell application "/System/Library/CoreServices/Folder Actions Dispatcher.app" to tick
This little tell line caused something to occur where my Folder Action surprised me and worked for the first time though it took about 30 seconds and was erratic,
sometimes performing, sometimes not, though if I would do move something into the folder to trigger the action that should occur, and did not occur, then at the point
running the above tell line or script would cause the action to occur.
    4. At this point I don't fool with the tell line or script from #3, and it seems that systemevents has gotten involved, as well as launchd, and with my simple Folder Action script
I'm getting the folder action within 10 seconds compared to 30 to 45 if ever seconds.
    5. This is still too early to tell if this is the wonder pill I've needed since Leopard, and now Snow Leopard (and maybe Tiger as well: I forget when I even tried Folder Actions).
There was a time when I moved things around, so that the items normally found in the former AppleScript folder, were placed elsewhere in subfolders, so I don't know if that lead to this...
because I could get Folder Actions to work on Macs in the Applestore, but not my own Mac. Watching the console messages was helpful. I don't think it's a big concern that
deprecated messages are found sometimes. That's a just a normal part of the constantly rebuilding of things that goes on. It's more like a reminder that we've got an upgraded
OEM part were going to start using, and the older part won't be available after such and such date, so program accordingly, and in the meantime drive.

  • Flash 9 Does Not Work- Tried EVERYTHING

I tried everything from uninstalling, using the standalone,

  • Ipod not working, tried all suggestions i could find none worked

I have a 20 gb ipod that my mom got from sam's club, there is an hp thing on the back so guess that means it's and hp ipod and not a straight apple ipod which my brother says is bad, it came with a griffen itrip and a griffen powerpod car charger, that's all the background about it that i know.
so i was listening to it today and went to change the song and it didn't play so i figured i must have paused it accidentally, so i hit the play button again, and it changed songs..so then i decided to turn it of and turn it back on again, and it didn't turn back on, it started making wierd clicking noises, so i plugged it into a charger to see if that would fix it and that didn't work either, then i plugged it into my computer and it didn't show up on my computer or in itunes, so i went to this website and started looking around, i did the whole hold down select and menu for 6 second thing and the apple sign showed up, but nothing else happened so i tried to restore it, but the updater wo't regonize it, so then i downloaded the new updater, and it says that it won't mount, so then i did all the stuff i could understand on the "what to do it your ipod won't mount" page i tried forcing it into disk mode like it said to but i wouldn't go, then it just kinda went into disk mode by itself, but the updater still didn't recognize it, so then i tried downloading the new itunes and all that stuff and tried removing the itunes software from my computer, and i guess i did b/c i can't find it now... and now my ipod stopped making the noise, but it's random displaying either the apple symbol, the DO NOT DISCONNECT symbol and that folder with the exclamation point, i tried all the stuff under " folder with an exclamation point" page as well nothing has worked...
    what do i do?

    Hi ...
The problem is the iPod, not your Mac.
Place the iPod in recovery mode > If you can't update or restore your iOS device
If that won't work, contact Apple >  iPod touch - Apple Support

  • G 505S "Plugged in and not charging" (Tried everything!!!)

    Hi everyone!
I hope someone in the community can help me out. I've tried calling in to Lenovo and I've only been disapointed and VERY ANGRY with Lenovo so I hope someone here can help me.
My G505s has never properly charged the battery. The battery icon says "plugged in and not charging". I've tried everything, replacing the battery, uninstalling the Microsoft Battery driver, uninstalling Lenovo energy management etc.
I've tried the work arounds I've found online to no sucess.
Does anyone have any ideas? Has anyone ran in to this with the G505s and found a fix?
    Thanks!

    hi apb1019
Welcome to the Lenovo Forums and sorry to hear about your battery problem.
The plugged-in not charging message is usually triggered when the Lenovo Energy Management / Lenovo Energy Manager is set to Optimized Batteyr Health (Win8) or Conservation Mode (Win8.1)

      - Link to picture
    Just to verify:
    1. When you uninstalled the energy management software, are you getting a 0% available, plugged-in not charging message or 60% available, plugged-in not charing ?

    2. Have you tried charging the battery (for an hour or two) while the computer is off?

If the battery doesn't get fully charge while the computer is off then it's likely that the battery is failing. In this case, I recommend you contact Lenovo one more time on how to go about getting the unit serviced (they'll most likely send you a new battery).
    Regards

  • IPhone 5 mobile internet not working - tried everything

Mobile internet on my iPhone is not working properly, regardless of the protocol (edge or 3G). It's the strangest problem possible and so far I've tried everything to fix the problem, but nothing helps.
    Here's the deal:
    - when I switch from wi-fi to 3G/E, everythings seems normal (there's the sign 3G or edge on the screen), but there is no internet connection
    - I have to go to settings, switch off 3G and switch it back on and the internet starts working. It solves the problem also if there's only edge signal, which makes it even more strange.
    - when I switch back to wi-fi and then again back to mobile network, the same problem occurs and the same solutions applies
    - the same happens when I drive in my car and the phone switches between two carrier's antennas or if I switch on the airplane mode/reset the phone
I've used the iPhone since it came out and had every version, so I consider myself an advanced user. In order to try to solve the problem I tried everything possible:
    - checked cellular data information
    - reset network settings
    - restored the phone
    - updated the iOS
    - manually deleted cellular data and entered it again
    - went to my carrier to get a new sim card
    - had the carrier analyze the problem on a case study (I sent over location data and time), but they found no mistakes on the network
    - went to Apple and got my iPhone replaced TWICE
    So I eliminated the following:
    - settings error
    - carrier error
    - hardware error
The only thing I have left now is the exorcist.

  • ZEN Sleek photo not recognized tried everything HEL

i bought my zen photo sleek today, the software installed, the device was recognized. I started transferring files which stopped at file 97 and didn't do anything. I clicked cancel which made the tranfer window freeze and not respond anymore. Task manager didn't open so i rebooted my computer. After this the device wasn't recognized anymore. since then i've tried EVERYTHING i could find on this forum but failed. all setting seem to be ok, i reinstalled al the software twice, downloaded the hotfixes etc. nothing works. I mailed customer service and am wiating for a reply, anyone any ideas in the meantime ?

general_tomorof wrote:My firmware is version .0.0eaifaik, for the zen sleek photo there is no v2.xx..the release was only few weeks ago, so the firmware is very new and maybe not full functionable on all pc's.and it is not possible to update your firmware without connection to your player..Edit: i already installed WMP0
Apologies, I just noticed this was a Sleek Photo, rather than the original Sleek.
I'm guessing the Sleek Photo must be PlayForSure, so for some reason Windows is not picking up the MTP device driver. You can try forcing Windows, through Device Manager, to look in the directory C:\WINDOWS\INF where the MTP driver information is located.
Failing that, have a look at the link "problems with connecting using MTP firmware" in the FAQ post.

  • Ipod not recognised - tried absolutely everything

My ipod is not recognised by windows or itunes when I connect it via the USB cable to my PC. If the ipod is off upon connecting it will turn on but will not change to the 'do not disconnect' screen and doesn't appear in my computer. The socket therefore is ok as it will also charge fine via a mains charger.
I have already done the following without success:
    - Done the 5 R's thing with the reset
    - Reinstalled itunes, restarted etc
    - tried different USB cables
    - tried different USB ports
    - tried connecting to different computers, both PCs and Macs
Is there anything else I can try? Or will it need to be serviced? It's now out of warranty so want to avoid that if possible.
The biggest worry is not only that I will always be unable to add any further music to the ipod but also that I have photos on there that I need to get off.
    Any help much appreciated

  • Help! iTunes wont recognise iPod and ive tried everything..

I seem to have this ongoing drama with iTunes. I thought it was all over last week when I updated iTunes with the latest version. Everything was sweet for a couple of days. Now its back!
    Whats happenning is this:
    I connect iPod.
Nothing happens, it doenst start up iTunes.
    So I manually open iTunes.
iTunes is very slow. Finally opens up.
Then it spends another 5mins "frozen".
Finally the iPod pops up but its asking me to re-name it.
It asks me this every time.
When it syncs it takes a long time.
When I ask it to eject, it takes probably 20min.
Sometimes i have to eject it from My Computer.
This is what I have tried to do:
    Restart the computer.
    Restart iPod.
    Change USB ports.
Restore iPod from iTunes - it never actually completed this as after 2 hrs of watching the progress bar not going past the first stage I gave up!
Re-install iTunes. Couldnt get it to go past the part where it was stopping a service? Dont know what this means but it wouldnt re-install.
So can anyone suggest what I should try now cause I am stuck.
Please if you have a suggestion I would appreciate your help.
    Thanks.

Update - I have discovered that iTunes will only recognise my iPod if I open it in the following order 1)Connect iPod, and 2)Open iTunes. If I already have iTunes open and then plug the iPod in it wont work.
Its still asking me to set up the iPod and it takes around 5mins to detect the iPod is connected.
    Please can anyone help me?????
