IPod not remembering playback position

hi all. i have converted many movies files into the mp4 for my 5g 30gb ipod (mainly from .avi files already converted from DVD's) and my ipod wont remember the playback position. if i watch a movie, stop, auto-sync my ipod with itunes, the position is reset.
it used to stay even after syncing. ive already tried the "reset all settings" from the menu, but it doesnt seem to help. and yes i have up-to-date firmware.
any help would be appreciated, its very frustrating to have to search for the spot, especially since it just wears down the battery even more.

  • IPod Video - remember playback position wont update

I am watching a converted mp4 of a TV episode from a DVD that I own. When I interupt to change to something else, it only remembers the first occurence of the first time I do that. If I watch to a later point, exit and return later, it restarts at the point I exited at the first time. Any ideas as to why remember playback position will not update? Thanks for any advice.

Well, from a programming aspect, obviously. But, there's no way we can alter how any variables are set. I recommend restoring your iPod. That may fix it. Other than that, I suppose contacting Apple might be the only way to go.

  • Podcast not remembering playback position. HELP!!!

My podcasts start over at the beginning everytime I exit the podcast and go back into it.  The "Remember Playback Position" is checked and it starts at the beginning regardless of whether I sync it or not.  Please help.  I've looked into every aspect of this and can't find any resolve.

Never mind, figured it out. You have to select all the files, cannot change it per individual file.

  • Shuffle is not remembering playback position on podcasts - how to fix?

I seem to have gotten the hard part out of the way, I've figured out how to get podcasts onto my 2nd gen shuffle (Select all > Get Info > Options > Skip When Shuffling > No).
Now, the issue is that when I reattach the shuffle to the computer, I can't get it to recognize the playback position I'm in the middle of a file.
It works one way, computer > shuffle. If I've gotten to the middle of a file on the computer, the shuffle recognizes it and picks it up from the paused point, which is as it should be. But when I plug the shuffle back in after listening for a bit, it doesn't work from shuffle > computer. It does not recognize the new point where I hit pause on the shuffle, which is incredibly frustrating.
I went through and did a Select all > Get Info > Options > Remember Position > Yes to make sure there isn't an errant track not set up correctly, but that didn't help.
Anybody got any ideas? Or is this another "convenient feature" of how the 2G shuffle works with podcasts? Running iTunes 8.2 on OS X 10.5.
    +Resolved by resetting. Never mind!+

I usually run my browser with around 4 to 5 tabs saved at all times, an example of the problem is one tab is a web page with a novel, if I were to read half way into the page when closing firefox, it will resume at the same spot I left off when I turn it back on.
However, if I were to change to a different tab and then close firefox, by the time I turn it back on and go back to the tab with the novel it'll return to the spot where I last refreshed, which usually is never so it returns to the top of the page. This is happening to every single tab/web site that was not refreshed anytime before I turn off firefox.
Everytime I close firefox I choose the save my tabs option and firefox had always remembered my last position for every tab before I upgraded to 27.0.1
Hope this is enough information to understand my problem.

  • Audiobook Not Remembering Playback Position

In iTunes 9.2, when marked as "Audiobook" itunes no longer remembers playback position. Both Playback position and skip when shuffling are grayed out, however they aren't checked. I put the files back in as "music: and manually checked "remember playback" and it worked fine.
Anyone else run into this? I have tried it on home and work computer.

Never mind, figured it out. You have to select all the files, cannot change it per individual file.

  • Files that "remember playback position" are not updating during sync

I listen to long spoken word MP3 files that are not podcasts. I have the "remember playback position" option checked on these files. I will add it to my library, sync it to my 2nd gen iPod shuffle, then go play it. The shuffle will remember the playback position fine. When I plug it into the computer again, iTunes used to update the files on my computer with the new playback position from the shuffle. This is not the case anymore. The local files will stay at the spot where they were at the original sync (0:00 in most cases). The files on the shuffle will then go back to 0:00 as well. This is very annoying. Any ideas?
P.S. I'm using the newest Shuffle that was released along with the 4th gen Nano (mine is the 2GB blue).
I know this is supposed to work because I had a silver 1GB shuffle in 2007 that worked fine.

ROFL I've named this thread "Shuffle Woes" in my favorites list. I seem to have fixed this strange and VERY elusive problem for now.
I discovered a duplicate music file that had the same metadata as another music file. The only difference between the two files was the name of the physical file on the hard disk AKA the file name. The metadata (tags) were exactly the same. Now that I've deleted one of the two files everything seems to magically work again. Don't ask me!
If the problem resurfaces again I'll be back. No more shuffle woes!

  • ITunes 7.0 ignoring "Remember playback position"

I've been encountering an issue where iTunes 7.0 is ignoring last marked playback position on files with "Remember playback position" set. The files in question are on my iPod. I can't put my finger on it, but I have for certain encountered this anomaly more than three times, with different files (all are mp3 podcasts from different sources). Instead of resuming playback where I left off, it begins playback starting at the beginning of the file.
Has anyone else been encountering this? If so, is there any workaround for this or should it be placed on top of the growing heap of iTunes 7.0 bugs?

So glad to at least find others that are having this problem. It's driving me crazy! I wish I had a fix, but even the Apple reps at MacWorld didn't have a solution.
This happened when I upgraded to iTunes 7. My "Remember Playback Position" is checked but greyed out.
Possibly related, when I first disconnect the iPod, the audiobooks show up inside the top level "Audiobooks" category. If I listen to one of them, then go listen to a song, then go back to the Audiobooks category, the books are now gone! I can get to them by browsing through Artists but it's definitely not the expected behavior.

  • Getting playlists to sync and remember playback position

    Hi --
Is it possible to create a playlist where all the items in that playlist have the "Remember playback position" ticked, such that both ipod and itunes sync up the playlist position when connected?
I've tried this, and for some reason even with "Remember playback" chosen, whilst individually inside each of itunes and the ipod the position of the tracks will be remembered when syncing up ipod/itunes will not 'rationalise' the position in the way in which it seems to be able to do with podcasts.

I have a smart playlist for all of my Mac podcasts. It's set for anything where genre is podcast, "mac" is in album or name, play count is 0. As soon as I've listened to one podcast, it drops off of my playlist (at least once I've navigated at least one level above the contents of the playlist.
Are you trying to create a playlist with podcasts from 1 subscription or several subscriptions? If 1, then you'd put the name of the podcast "album" . If several, you could place something in the "comments" section of the get info window. For example, you could even put in "playlist one" into the comments section of each podcast that you wanted in that playlist. Then when you set up your smart playlist options, choose "genre" is "podcast", "keyword" is/contains "playlist one", "play count" is 0.
Does that make sense? Would that accomplish what you want?

  • ITunes does not sync playback position between computers

I have a Macbook (10.7) and a Mac Pro (10.8). The same audiobook on both but iTunes on the Macbook doesn't seem to remember where I left off when I was listening on the Pro. I resisted upgrading from 10.6 for a long time but isn't icloud supposed to do this?! I can't find any settings that control this and, yes, the audiobook is set to "remember playback position"
    Thanks for your help!

    Beast,
This is similar to my question, however I'm talking songs, not audio books, here.
How is it possible to have different "remember playback position" settings for different devices using the same iTunes library?
The example is that the iPod I connect to my car audio always (annoyingly) starts playing the same song whenever the iPod is switched on. I want to use the "remember playback position" setting to to stop this, and instead start playing the song from where it left off previously. I assume I could use a batch change on iTunes to accomplish this. However, I wouldn't want that setting used for other devices.
    Thoughts?

  • How to set remembering playback position as default

    Hi everyone,
I know how to manually set the "Remember Playback Position", however it doesn't remain set and keeps on dropping off.
does anyone know how to set it as a default value? or is there a bug effecting this functionality?

    Hi Alessanrdo,
    Thanks for your reply.
Actually the motive behing this option is to cover the "loop hole" of ARQ application. If you notice, we can "keep" adding the same role which is already assigned with different validity dates. ARQ does not control this!
Eventually, what happens that in the back end system, the user master record is overwhelmed with the same role entry with different validity dates!
Unfortunately, application does not have any control over this. Therefore, at least making "RETAIN" as the default provisioning action, we can have a "sort" of control over this. What happens is, if I add a role which is already assigned to a user and change the validity dates, there will not be any new entry in the back end system with the same role.
Hope this will help you understand the requirement and advise me.
    Regards,
    Faisal

  • Remember Playback Position still broken in 3.1

    On a mac.
    Description of problem:
    1. Mark a song to 'Remember Playback Position'
    2. Connect iphone and sync song.
    3. Remove iphone from cable.
    4. Play song.
    5. While song is playing, connect cable.
    6. Sync iphone.
    7. Remove iphone from cable.
    8. Play song.
    It starts from the beginning.
This worked in 2.0. I fail to understand how this was broken in 3.0 and was not fixed in 3.1. I have invested a lot of money in Apple products and this is just horrible.

Works fine here, I fail to understand how you broke it.

  • ITunes 5: What is Remember playback position?

ITunes 5 has a new option in the Get Info/Options Tab
"Remember Playback Position". Does anyone know what this is for?
I suspect that it may have something to do with the default playback start position, but I'm not sure.
If i don't want the song to start from the beginning (e.g. long intro) I normally set the 'Start Time' in the same options tab. I'm wondering if this is another way to achieve this.
    TIA

When you want the music to start at some position, drag the time indicator (or what it is called) to the position where it should start.
    Then check "Remember"
Everytime you play that sound it starts at the position indicated. On the left you see the played time.
Perhaps it is a different way to accomplish the same.
Just give it a try and see if it has any use for you.

  • Script to mark playlist as "remember playback position"

Does anyone know if it is possible to make a script that will mark a specific playlist, or at least a selected range of items, as "remember playback position" and "skip when shuffling"?
I have a few recorded radio shows that are added to iTunes automatically through "iTunes Folder Watch" but as it currently stands I must now go through the new ones every day and mark them as noted above.
Surely this can be accomplished through the iTunes Scripting Interface? I imagine it is just that I am not a programmer and able to write one.
    Suggestions?

    ??????
I'm gonna try and double up the ??? and see if that works.

  • Can I change 'remember playback position'?

I imported a CD and then I marked its tracks in iTunes as an audiobook (since it was an audiobook). Later I noticed that the "remember playback position" checkbox had been not only checked automatically -- I hadn't checked it -- but also grayed out / disabled. While it's true that usually I like my audiobook tracks to remember playback positions, sometimes I don't (some tracks in audiobooks are quite short, or I always want to start at the beginning of a track to keep the author's flow of thought). I don't remember noticing this on tracks I imported even last month.
    Is this a recent change?
Is there a way to change a particular track so that it will always start at the beginning instead of in the middle?
    Thanks!

Not from within the OS. I don't know if there is a third-party hack that will do that.

  • IPod shuffle forgetting playback position with audiobooks

My iPod shuffle (2nd gen) sometimes forgets my place in the audiobook I'm listening to. The only solution I've found is to go into File > Get Info > Options> Start Time and set a start time. It's annoying to have to do this manually every time I listen to the book. Is there a way to improve the memory of my iPod, or is this a common glitch? Should I buy a newer or different iPod? I.e., does the iPod nano or iPod touch have a way to advance the playback position from the iPod, i.e., when I'm out and my iPod isn't plugged into my computer?

    Hello Thomas,
Have you double checked to make sure you have the *Remember Playback* position enabled for each of your audiobook tracks in iTunes from under the Options tab of the *Get Info* window as well?
