Ipod not showing up in itunes to restore, songs have 'swapped'

My ipod classic 30GB (2007) today started to display the 'connect to itunes to restore' screen. When I connect it to the computer it shows up as a malfunctioning device and there is no sign of it on itunes. It's constantly displaying 'do not disconnect' but without the usual red symbol.
Been having issues with for a while with songs 'swapping' - artwork and titles do not match up with the song playing. The problem seems to be from itunes library, and even when playing songs on itunes it will play another random song somewhere else in the list after the selected song ends. Can't find any information about why this might be happening anywhere.
Is my trusty ipod able to be saved and how can I fix the song swapping problem? It's a bit of a pain when trying to listen to the Happy Mondays and Slipknot plays instead.. although that's partly my fault for having such strange tastes

I think the iTunes issue is something else.
You probably do need to do a Restore.  There seems to be data corruption on the iPod.  Put the iPod into Disk Mode.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363
If it goes into Disk Mode, run iTunes and connect the iPod.  If iTunes prompts you to do a Restore, do the Restore.  This will erase the iPod, reinstall its software, and set it to default settings.
For the iTunes issue, see if it has to do with the Up Next feature.  In iTunes start playing from any list.  There is a box at the top of the window, with info about the currently playing song and its progress bar.  At the right side of this box, there is a symbol that looks like three dots and three lines.  Click that symbol.  You'll get the Up Next list (where you can create a temporary playlist of songs you want to hear "up next").  Click Clear at the top of the list.  Then restart playing from any list in iTunes to see if this problem still occurs.

Ipod not showing up on itunes or my computer.it recharges when i connect it but it dosent show up under devices so i cant sync any music!!the screen on the ipod would usually say "connecting"or"do not disconnect"but it dosent say that anymore!!Ive been trying to fix it for DAYS but i cant find a good enough solution.PLZ HELP!!(p.s. i have a 4th generation nano)

    Hey there,
A file or some files may have become corrupt somehow during connecting or disconnecting the unit. Try putting it into Disk Mode and see if that helps. To put it into Disk Mode, hold the Menu and Select buttons until the Apple logo appears. When it does, immediately press and hold the Center an Play/Pause buttons until you see a confirmation that your iPod has been put into Disk Mode.
If you are able to do this, it may be a good idea to restore the iPod to its original settings. Keep in mind that by doing this you are erasing all the music and files from your iPod so make sure they are backed up on your computer somewhere. More on restoring your iPod can be found in the Apple document below.
    Hope this helps.

  • Ipod not showing up in Itunes on Mac computer

When I plug in my ipod touch to my computer it does not show up in Itunes. do I need to reset my ipod touch?
Help!!! I have done all the things to troubleshoot this situation other than reset my ipod. I am afraid to do this. I don't want to loose anyting.

    I would try:
    - Rebooting your computer
    - Resetting the iPod.  Nothing would be lost.
Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Trying another USB port and cable
    - The troubleshooting here.  You di not say what you alread tried.
Mac OS X v10.6 or later: iOS device not recognized in iTunes after restart
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Device not recognized in iTunes for Mac OS X
    - Last would be to place it in recovery mode and then restore it.  However, you will loose everthing on the iPod.  Restoring from backy and syncing will then restore you iPod to what it was before the last backup.  For recovery mode see:

  • IPod not showing up in iTunes (but it worked before)

Hey... this is my second day of having my iPod and all was working fine. I had loaded songs into iTunes and was able to transfer them onto the iPod..
The problem I am having now though is that I always leave my computer on at night, but I turn off my monitor. I went to sleep last night and when I turned on my monitor this morning, my computer had shown that it had been reset (it was prompting me to log in) so I did so, and now my iPod wont show up in iTunes anymore... but it does show up in windows explorer.
Any fix to this? I've restarted my computer several times, uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes, and also stopped the iPod process in the device manager thingy and restarted it, but to no avail.

I've posted several questions over this and no one has helped me either, i've done all the delete, uninstall, reinstall, computer management things too, and nothing has worked for me either, I am quite disappointed at how I am not getting any help. Hope you find someone who can help you!

  • IPod not showing up in iTunes, and...

    Windows Vista, Home Premium, 64-bit.
Brand new 32GB iPod touch, 2G.
I bring it home from the store, plug it in, everything works perfectly fine. By that, I mean it charges, shows up as a device in iTunes, and gets all my songs and videos on it. I also install iTunes 8.2, since it tells me I should.
That was yesterday. Now, when I plug it in, it makes two beeping noises. The iPod itself doesn't react at all, the screen just stays black. The iPod doesn't charge, and it doesn't show up in iTunes.
So, I call Apple for support, and I get it. Uninstall/reinstall, messing with the AMDS service, everything I could. The guy brought it down to either a problem with the cable, or the computer, but said it doesn't seem like it's a problem with Apple.
After the fact, I try plugging it in again, while holding down the home button, and something new shows up. It says this:
    "Found New Hardware"
"Windows needs to install driver software for your Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode)"
and it gives me these options:
"Locate and install driver software (recommended)"
    "Ask me again later"
"Don't show this message again for this device"
of course, I choose the first one and I click it. It then says:
    "Driver Software Installation"
    "Installing driver software"
"Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode) Searching Windows Update..."
"Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode) Pending..."
After a few moments, something new pops up, while "Driver Software Installation" is still running, saying:
"Found New Hardware - Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode)"
"Insert the disc that came with your Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode)"
"If you have the disc that came with your device, insert it now. Windows will automatically search the disc for driver software."
and of course, iPod touches don't come with a disc. It gives me this option:
"I don't have the disc. Show me other options."
so I click that, and it gives me a this:
"Windows couldn't find driver software for your device"
    it tells me I can:
    "Check for a solution"
    or
"Browse my computer for driver software"
I click "Check for a solution." Instantly, it says:
"Windows was unable to install your Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode)"
"Windows could not find driver software for your device."
"If you know the manufacturer of your device, you can visit its website and check the support section for driver software."
there are no more options except for "close" at that point, and the Driver Software Installation says "Failed" as a status, so I just close it.
Here's the other catch. I'm willing to try about anything to get it to work, so I think "might as well plus it into my laptop." So I do. Within moments it says:
    "New hardware detected: iPod"
    and then:
"iPod USB drivers installed and ready to use"
my iPod begins charging, and would apparently work fine on my old laptop, running XP.
I have no idea what to do at this point. Any suggestions?

    Aaand, FIXED!

my ipod worked fine...then i realized i had to install the ipod updater so i did that...then by accident i unplugged my ipod video while it said do not disconnect, now my ipod doesn't show up in itunes, but does in my computer...also my wireless usb adapter is my interenet connection and has stopped working...in my network connections, hi speed and wireless options do not even show up anymore...what could be the problem? also nothing is showing up in my device manager...what is wrong? plus when i open the ipod updater which is where i would do the restore...neither of the buttons are clickable...i think something is wrong witht he ipod updater software

There are some bad sectors on the hard drive of the iPod, see if you can do a Restore on a window base PC, if so, reconnect it back with your Mac and hopefully it will get recognized for you to do the following :-
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes and click “Restore”

  • Menu bar icons vanished and iPod not showing up in iTunes anymore

All menu bar icons on the right side (keyboard, clock, battery) vanished.
It's not possible to get them back by mark their visability in the system configuration. The system just ignores any attempt to do that (I can mark the check box, but nothing appears on the menu bar; after leaving and returning to the panel, the mark has gone).
Besides of that, my iPod doesn't show up in iTunes anymore (but does on the desktop).
My laptop may be physically damaged as it fell down to the floor a few days ago.

Have you run the Apple Hardware Test and also Repair Disk?
THESE ARE THE STEPS FOR USING DISK UTILITY TO REPAIR YOUR HD
1.Insert the System Install disk, Mac OS X CD-ROM disk, or Restore DVD disk, then restart the computer while holding the C key. Use the System disk, of the OS, that is currently installed.
2.Once started up from CD or DVD, choose Disk Utility from the Installer contextual menu for Panther, or Utilities for Tiger, on the Menubar at the top of the screen.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
    3.Click the First Aid tab.
4.Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5.Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
6.Click Repair. If DU reports errors it has fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.
7.When finished, select Quit Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
8.Select Quit Installer from the Installer menu.
9.In the resulting pop-up window, choose restart.
10.After the computer has restarted, you can eject the CD.
Repeat steps 5 & 6, but select the Hard Drive this time. It's usually the first listed with the manufacturer's model number.
Make note of the S.M.A.R.T. status.

  • Old 1g iPod not showing up in iTunes

Hi, I just dug out my old 1G iPod (5GB original 2001 model!) and decided to perform a "hack" to install a larger 20GB hard drive. The upgrade was successful, except the 20GB drive is completely blank (Zeroed). When I connect the iPod to my Windows box, it is seen as a device, but iTunes 7 doesn't show it. I used Disk Manager to create a partition on the drive but iTunes still wouldn't see it. Without iTunes being able to see the iPod, there's no way I can "restore" it to put iPod firmware on the new drive!
Is there any way I can make this work?
iBook Dual USB   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

That USB port you are plugging the iPods into? It is considered a "device" by Windows.
So if Windows doesn't know about the USB device, because your Device Manager is blank, no way will iTunes be able to recognize the iPod.
You could pretty much plug anything into that USB port, and it would not be recognized. It really doesn't seem to be an iTunes/iPod problem.
Did you get your PC from Dell or Gateway? They should be able to talk you trhough this.

  • IPod not showing up in iTunes 11.1

So I just recently downloaded iTunes 11.1 and prior to downloading it I had no problem synching anything from iTunes to my iPod. However, now my iPod doesn't even register in iTunes. My computer registers that it is plugged in and that it is charging, iTunes is not showing it though.

I had the same problem, no one would answer me yesterday.  I have done the steps in the link lllaas has posted, NUMEROUS times.  NOW I Tunes has somehow deleted ANY and ALL music I had transfered over six years from my CD's and only saved the music I purchased.  My husbands old wheel style I pod can connect fine, I had to restore mine on my daughters older computer  and I did an "update/sync" twice on my computer after restore, but it would NOT restore ANY music on it after I completely restored the Ipod. Now, once again, I Tunes suddenly won't recognize the I pod.  It's not a USB cable or hardware problem as all other I pods in the house work fine on same stuff.  I am very very angry and can't seem to find a SIMPLE (I am not a computer move it around person) answer or fix that works.  As soon as I updated both I Tunes and then tried to update my IPod Touch, all this happened.  I can access ITunes on my daughters PC as I did NOT allow the ITunes update.  Sadly, we have different libraries and now mine and my hubby's library seems to be mostly GONE!  I have a backup but I tried the method to restore it and it won't take it.  I am beyond frustrated and keep reading that many of us have the issue but have not seen any answers that actually fix it.  There is a bug in ITunes 11 but they won't admit it.
Just wanted to say I have the same issue and hope lllaass fix works for you, after 15 tries, it hasn't yet for me.

  • IPod not showing up in iTunes source list

    Hi,
My fifth gen iPod is not showing up in the iTunes source list. I've tried the troubleshooting recommendations (unistall and then reinstall iTunes, delete the iPod/bin file and then update iPod software, etc.) The only one I have not tried is restoring the iPod to factory settings because that would erase the entire contents and since I can't see it in iTunes I couldn't add them back in.
Does anyone know what I can do to get the iPod to show up in the iTunes source list?
    Thanks

Hi. I'm not sure I'm using this discussion form correctly. Anyway, I'm on an iBook. OSX 10.2.8 and recently purchased a fifth gen ipod. connected everything just fine and have been importing some CDs to itunes and updating songs on the ipod for a couple of days. Listening to music, the whole deal.
today, was trying to eject my ipod and computer froze. Restarted my computer and everything is gone from my ipod. Started the procedure of updating the ipod to reload the songs (still in itunes library) and realized that ipod is not showing up in my itunes source list.
Did the 5 Rs. Haven't reinstalled software cause not sure how.
    Any help?
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
First try resetting your iPod again (several times
may be needed). Connect it to your computer, and see
    what happens.
If your iPod appears in "My Computer", then have you
tried out all the suggestions in this article?:
iPod appears in Windows but not in iTunes
In your case, you'll probably need to assign your
iPod a different drive letter (because your computer
may be recognizing the iPod as a network device).
If your iPod doesn't appear in "My Computer" however,
then try the following. If it already does, then
assign it a different letter following the
    instructions further below.
I'm presuming that you've read through all the
suggestions in this article below, correct?:
iPod doesn't appear in Windows or in
    iTunes
Restoring may be worth it, by the way, because
restoring formats your iPod to your computer, so it
may be recognized after doing this.
Have you tried the Five R's?
    The
    Five R's
If there are other hardware devices that are
connected to your computer's USB ports (printers,
camera), then try disconnecting them, resetting your
iPod, and connect your iPod to your computer once
    more.
Try getting your computer to recognize your iPod by
also: operating in manual disk mode:
Putting your iPod into disk mode
Assigning your iPod a different drive letter
Now, see if your iPod is recognized by Control Panel,
and try assigning it a different drive letter:
1 - Don’t plug in your iPod yet.
2 - Go to "START -> Control Panel -> Admin Tools (if
you don't see this, click on "classic view" button on
the left panel) -> Computer Management."
3 - Click on the "Disk Management" button in the left
    panel area.
4 - Now, with "Computer Management" and Control Panel
windows opened, reset your iPod, and connect it.
    5 - Right-click on your iPod's listing there (after a
few moments when it gets recognized in this drive
window), and click on "Change Drive letter and
    Paths". Then the "Change..." button.
Here's what it should look like:
Assign your iPod the letter "M" "N", "O" or the like
    (further along in the alphabet).
For more details, see this article:
Windows confuses iPod with network device /
    Changing drive letter
I hope this helps you, post back if you have issues
with performing any of these things.

  • Ipod not showing up in itunes or on computer

after updating to itunes 9.1 my ipod will not show up anywhere on my computer. It doesn't even do anything when i plug it in. Although everytime since then a message comes up after logging into my computer about the applesync notifier had some sort of error and CoreFoundation.dll was not found. I re-installed itunes and that didn't help so i uninstalled MobileMe and now the message does not come up,my ipod still doesn't connect though.Any help?

It sounds like the port or cable is having a problem. First try a different cable.
If the cable doesn't fix things then try resetting the PMU (Power Management Unit) then see if the iPod will show up.

  • Windows Format iPod Not showing up in iTunes or in finder.

    Hello,
I have a 5th Gen iPod that is formatted for Windows and I can not get it to work with my Macs. I am using version 7.3.2 of iTunes with an intel iMac and a Macbook. The iPod works fine and charges fine with a wall charger. It will not charge when plugged into the Mac via USB. It will not mount when forced into disk mode either.
Steps I have tried so far:
Reset iPod by toggling hold on and off an d holding down menu + select until Apple logo comes on screen.
    Reinstalled iTunes.
    Restarted both Macs.
Used different USB port and cable (My other 5th Gen iPod mounts and syncs fine with my cables and ports)
    Forced iPod into Disc Mode
I can't restore using either iTunes or the iPod updater app because the iPod cannot be seen by the Mac.
I'm at a loss and no forum posts or knowledgebase articles have helped out.
    Please help! Thanks in advance!

*It will not charge when plugged into the Mac via USB.*
+That's indicative of a defective cable and/or USB port. However, that conclusion is contradicted by the following.+
*Used different USB port and cable (My other 5th Gen iPod mounts and syncs fine with my cables and ports).*
Now, I'm concluding that there is something defective in the iPod's connector or in the iPod itself. If I'm correct, System Profiler (About this Mac, More Infor...) also will not see it. I also expect that the Windoze machine won't see it. If you still have access to the Windoze machine, check that out.
