IPod not showing up on desktop or in iTunes, thinking I have to re-install.

My iPod isn't showing up when I plug it into my iMac G5 and going through the help menus, I've found that it suggests re-installing iTunes before trying to restore my iPod.
I have a color screen 20 GB iPod that I purchased about a year ago.
Now, will re-installing iTunes dump all my ratings and notes and cover art I've collected and modified over the past year?
It seems to me that my iPod is full of songs I might not like to listen to as much and podcasts I'm never going to listen to in the first place, so it seems to me that I'd be better off just restoring the iPod instead.
Any suggestions or people who have the same problem?
I will reward helpful hints, and this will be posted on the iPod board as well. Thanks.

No, it won't. Cover art is embedded in the song files and ratings and comments are stored in the 'iTunes library' file, which isn't replaced or deleted by re-installing iTunes.
Before re-installing iTunes, you might read this article.
It contains lots of useful information about fixing these kind of problems.
Personally, I would try the 5 R's first (Reset, Retry, etc.)
Hope this helps.

  • IPod not showing up on desktop nor in iTunes

My iPod doesn't seem to register on the desktop anymore. It was working fine until last night. The iPod screen would say that it's connecting and tell me not to disconnect. Then, it would go dark and you'd see the Apple logo, as if it were resetting itself. I've tried resetting it, but it appears to do the same thing after I've plugged it in again. Can I restore the iPod without plugging it in? Perhaps there's a corrupt file / mp3 on the iPod? How do I erase the iPod without plugging it in?

I was wondering if anyone was able to help you with your iPod problem. I'm having some of the same problems with the added "excitement" of a Do Not Disconnect showing on my iPod but nothing showing my iPod either on the desktop or in iTunes. I don't know what to do. I can't even restore it to factory settings because it doesn't show up anywhere. Was hoping you got some help and could share it.
    Thanks

  • IPod not showing up on computer or in iTunes

My iPod mini (It's the older version of iPod mini in the darker colors) recently stopped showing up on my iMac and iTunes. It charges, but since it doesn't show up, I can't add music or anything.
I already looked at the support page Apple has for this problem and I tried everything and nothing helped me. The only thing I didn't try was resetting my iPod, which I don't think will work because not only does my iPod not show up, but neither does my sister's and my mom's.
My sister has the same model of iPod mini as mine, and my mom has the slightly newer mini (with the brighter colors).
Does anyone have any suggestions how I can fix this problem? I gave up on it for awhile, but now I really need it resolved. Thank you in advance.
    Power iMac G3 Mac OS X (10.3.9)

It sounds like the port or cable is having a problem. First try a different cable.
If the cable doesn't fix things then try resetting the PMU (Power Management Unit) then see if the iPod will show up.

  • IPod Touch 3G not showing up on desktop or in iTunes

I have not had my iPod show up on the desktop for a long time. Now it's not showing up in iTunes. I have tried restarting everything, reinstalling iTunes, & every other suggestion mentioned in support. What else can I try?

It will not and never has shown on the desktop like other iPods will.
As for showing up in iTunes, you can try another USB port on your computer, or maybe another dock connector cable, if you have one. If your cable is damaged, you can order a warranty replacement here: https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do
You might need to remove and reinstall the Apple Mobile Device Service. Check out this article:

  • Iphone device not showing up on desktop or in itunes

I connected to my Macbook Pro with the USB connector that came with my new iphone a few weeks ago. This morning when I tried to connect and download music, my device icon does not appear on my desktop or in the itunes left nav bar. Anyone else have this issue?

Your iPhone should never appear on your desktop - the iPhone does not support disk use, so it cannot be mounted like an external disk or an iPod with disk use enabled.
However, it should show up in the devices list in iTunes.
First, do you have another dock cable to try? Any USB dock cable from a recent iPod will work. If that doesn't help, try re-installing iTunes (just download it from here and run the install, no need to uninstall anything). If that doesn't correct the issue, you may need to remove and reinstall AMDS:

  • Shuffle does not show up on desktop or in iTunes

Older iPod Shuffle (2nd version) does not appear on desktop or in iTunes. It does play with earbuds attached so I know it is functioning.Have tried all the suggestions to no avail.
    Thanks,
    Pete

Are you using the USB cable that came with the shuffle?  The 2nd gen shuffle uses the USB cable with a mini-dock at the shuffle end.  The USB cable for the 3rd and 4th (current) gen shuffle does not work, because the connector is different.
If you are using the correct USB cable...  The shuffle will not continously appear on the Mac's desktop unless it is set to Enable disk use.  So "does not appear on desktop" may be OK.
It should appear in iTunes.  The latest version of iTunes may hide the sidebar.  To show the sidebar, from the iTunes menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.  With the sidebar visible, the shuffle does not appear under DEVICES in the sidebar when connected?

  • My Touch will not show on my desktop or in itunes when connected!

I installed leopard onto my macbook a few weeks ago and updated my itunes about a week ago. Tonight was the first time I plugged my ipod into my computer. Nothing has happened. I've tried using different USB cords and I've restarted both my computer and ipod touch. I've been trying to do some research on how to fix my problem and all I am finding are people with the same problem but there aren't any answers. I saw one person say to force it in idisk. I don't have idisk. Does anyone know of anything that could help me get my touch on my desktop and computer? Please please help.

The iPod Touch does not show up as a Device in the Finder. Only as a Device in iTunes.
Does your version of iTunes support the iPod Touch? Is your Quicktime up to date?

  • Ipod Not Showing Up In The List In Itunes

Hey, ive had problems with my ipod lately. basically when ever i plug my ipod into my computer, it appears in mycomputer and itunes also opens. i have run the diagnostic in the help menu in itunes and it is detecting my ipod HOWEVER it will not show up in the list on the right hand side!!!! I have tried all the things suggested by apple such as reinstalling and many other things like ending the process etc. no luck.. plz help!

Have you tried simply resetting hte ipod while it's connected to the PC?
If that doesn't help, here is an article with a long list of other stuff to investigate.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1369
You need to expand each link and read all the stuff. For example, under
"Connect iPod to a high-powered USB port"
    the 4th line down says
+If the issue persists, try disconnecting other USB devices from the computer such as printers, cameras, scanners, external hard drives, and USB hubs to determine if there is a conflict in the USB chain.+
That is a step you wouldn't want to skip, as it can really narrow things down.

  • IPod not showing up on my Mac or Itunes

I got a 30 gb video iPod this past Christmas and have had no problems until the other day. Now when I plug it in it doesn't show up on my Mac or in iTunes. It does show up in the System Profiler. I've tried everything in this article multiple times: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60950. The only success I've had is with restoring my iPod, but then of course I have to wait an hour for everything to get put back on there. Does anyone have a solution?
    eMac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   iTunes 6.0.5

It's only the iPod video and iPod nano that cannot be synced over Firewire. They can be both charged and synced with USB.
If you're having trouble with the iPod being recognized after the latest update, try the following.
    Windows users
Force the iPod into disk mode
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
Connect the iPod to the computer
    Click Start > Run
    Type compmgmt.msc
    Click on "Disk Management"
Let the computer go through its connection process
    Find the iPod's volume
Right click on iPod and click on Format
    Set the format to FAT32
Leave the rest of the settings on their defaults
    Do not perform a quickformat
    Start the format
When it's done, your iPod should appear in iTunes, although it is recommended that you restore the iPod after formatting it. It's not recommended to do this on a 60GB iPod
    Mac users
    Open your Finder
    Go to Macintosh HD
    Go to Applications
    Go to Utilities
    Go to Disk Utility
Select your iPod's volume in the left-hand column
    Click on the "erase" tab
Volume Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Uncheck "install Mac OS 9 driver)
    Click the erase button
It's recommended that you restore the iPod with the iPod Updater after running disk utility on it.
    Hope this is helpful

  • Older iPod not showing up for syncing in iMac iTunes

I've an older iPod, model MA497LL, i.e. an 8 GB, software version 1.1.3.
When I try to synch it, it does not appear on iTunes 11.3 on my 10.9.4 desktop.
Any fixes? Or is this guy past synching?

    Hello ThisIssue
Check out the troubleshooting assistant in the first article below. It will walk you through a few simple steps like restarting your iPod nano and changing ports on your Mac. Another troubleshooting option is to put your iPod nano into disk mode and then plug it in and see if iTunes recognizes it to be restored.

  • IPod not showing up in new  7.0 iTunes

I have had this problem several times since the new 7.0xxx iTunes has come out. I follow the steps in the diagnostic help topic and I eventually am able to fix the problem, but it is a different fix that works each time and it has been taking nearly half a day to resolve the issue (this is getting tedious!!!)! Is there something that is probably causing this issue to reoccur? Is there something with iTunes 7.0 and Norton SystemWorks that is causing this to reoccur? I never had any problems prior to 7.0 and obviously we can't go back to previously version since all files were transposed and reinstalling previous version 6.0 just causes errors. Thanks.

if this has just started happening for you with 7.0.x, it might be worth checking on the possibility from this document:

  • USB Drive and iPod do not show up on desktop

    Hello,
I put the computer to sleep when I'm going to be away for awhile and overnight. When I come back and wake it, my USB drive does not appear on the desktop. I have to restart the iMac to get it to come back.
Also, when I plug my iPod in, iTunes updates it and then within 10 minutes, the icon does not show on the desktop but I can see the iPod in iTunes.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Brad

I did run the hardware test and everything passed.
For about 3 hours last night, everything was working fine. This morning the USB drive icon is there but not the iPod. I think I will try the OS reinstall but not for about a week. I will be out of town all next week and can't get to it before I leave.
Something may have gone wacky while loading some application. A couple of the suspects would be Adobe Lightroom beta 4 or Google Earth. This issue only started within the last 5 days or so and I think those are the only applications I've loaded in that time.
Thanks for the help in eliminating some of the culprits. I think the OS install should fix. If not, it may be time to have Apple take a look.

  • 30gb ipod not showing up in itunes and desktop

My iPod icon is not appearing on my desktop or on iTunes.
Which therefore means I cannot load any music onto my iPod.
    I have tried:-
    - Resetting default settings on iPod,
    - Getting the latest updater for iTunes,
    - Installing from the iPod install disk,
    - changing USB ports,
    - Tried it on my work Mac.
    ...and still nothing at all.
Please can someone suggest something else to try - I need new tunes on my pod!!!
    Thanks a lot
