IPod not shown as drive

Following problem:
My iPod did not start from one day to the other. But it was shown as an usb device. So I updated the iPod with the latest iPod-update.
From this time on it does not start and is not shown as usb-drive. The only reaction I get when hitting a buton on the iPod is the charge-icon. It does not react on the reset-command and it does not respond on the iPod-updater. It seems to be invisible.
I don't know what to do.
Thanks so far
Bastian
iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1GB RAM, 160 GB HD

So, now I got the solution:
The problem is, that my iPod must be connected to the battery-charging station because there is a chip in it, which loads the first operating system on the flash-ROM of the iPod. After i've done so, there was no problem with it any more. Perhaps there was a hint in your articles and I have not seen it. Anyway, now it works, if anybody got the same problem: here is the solution. Thanks for all your help.

  • IPod not shown in ITunes, PC, or Explorer

My daughter has a first generation Ipod Nano. It's always worked fine, at least up until she installed Itunes 7. Now, nothing seems to work. The Ipod is not shown in ITunes, on our computer, in device manager, in Windows explorer, etc. We have tried the 5 Rs numerous times, used different USB ports, bought a new USB cable, etc. Also, when the Ipod is plugged into the PC, the entire PC freexes.
We're desperate--the Ipod is still fine when not connected. We can't restore the Ipod since ITunes doesn't recognize it.
Can anyone tell us something new to try? If we removed ITunes 7.0 and re-installed the previous updater, would she lose her music?
This is driving me nuts! lol

Try setting the nano into disk mode. I'm not sure of the button sequence for the nano, but for my iPod 3G you hold down the menu button and the play pause button until the apple logo appears. Then you hold the forward and back buttons until it gives you a check mark and says disk mode on top.
For the nano I believe it's menu and center select button to restart and then forward and back.
This should at least allow your computer to recognize the device so you can change the drive letter.

"Driver for this device not installed (Code 28). Click on reinstall driver to reinstall the drivers for this device."
When I click that it searches and after a while I get a window wich says this:"
There's a problem with the installation of this hardware:
    [USB LOGO] iPod
An error occured while installing the device.
    The servicedatabase is locked.
Click Finish if you want to close the wizard."

  • IPod not shown in windows or in itunes

My ipod is not showing in my computer or in itunes however my wifes ipod is - therefore I can't see that it's a problem with the pc (although mine is 3G and my wife's is 2G). I have had the ipod just under a year and it's been fine until now. It won't charge and can't add songs as it's not shown at-all.
Any ideas? It does connect to other PC's as I took it back to the store it was purchased from and it was recognised on their PC first time.
I really don't know what to do!
    Any help greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

I've spoken with Apple and here is their response (worked for me). You need to uninstall not only iTunes, but also (in this order):
    1) iTunes
    2) Apple Software Update
    3) Apple Mobile Device Support
    4) Bonjour
    5) Apple Application Support
Then you restart your computer. Then you install the latest version of iTunes (which will reinstall all those things you uninstalled). Then you restart your computer again.

My Ipod would not be assigned a disk letter, but even after I do it manually my computer will not recognize it. Also, after I unplug my Ipod it no longer has a disk letter assigned.

could you possibly send us a screenshot of your Disk Management while the ipod is plugged in? there's instructions on how to do that given in this user tip:

  • IPod Touch drive is not shown !

First, I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate x86. Once connected to the PC, my iPod Touch is charging normally and appears in iTunes but iPod Touch drive is not shown !
In the Windows Device Manager, iPod appears in Other devices but the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed and ready to use !!!

Do you have any other peripheral devices attached such as a scanner or other imaging devices?  It is possible that there is a conflict between one of them and your iPod.  Disable or temporarily remove them and see if your iPod works then.  You may have to unplug and replug in the iPod after you disable the other device.

  • My ipod touch is not installing the driver in order to work on my computer. It is Windows 7

Trying to connect new ipod to Windows 7. Message keeps coming up saying driver installation failed. I have tried to troubleshoot but seem to be getting nowhere! When I find a similar issue in a search, the support page on the Apple website can not be found. Not sure what to do now?
I have updated computer, itunes and the ipod etc

  • Windows Could not find the Driver for your Apple iPod USB Device (5G 30GB)

    I have a 8GB iPod Nano. My roommate has a 30GB 5G Video. Black.
My iPod syncs flawlessly. His is not recognized by Windows or iTunes. Every time we plug in the iPod, it prompts us for the driver. I tried to install the update apple mentions through the windows process, but after going through the tedious Windows Genuine Verification process, I was told that the update didn't apply to my computer.
We use a Lenovo Thinkpad T60p, which shipped with Windows Vista Business.
We are running iTunes 7.3.1.3, and there are no windows updates available for the computer.
    I have...
    ...reset
...reinstalled 7.3.1.3 (over and over and over)
...tried different USB ports. (Early on, we saw it once after swapping ports).
...tried turning off the ability of the computer to 'Turn this device off to save power."
I have also verified that the iPod works on my work Dell Lattitude D620 running XP, and that it's not the cord, as we've used the cord that came with my Nano as well.
So, the problem seems to be with vista, as many people seem to have had. The best thread I found that deals with this was http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=995793.
But even after having tried everything, I still have an unrecognizable iPod.
When I run iPod diagonostics, everything seems okay, except for the iPod connection, which says failed. I've had difficulty working with the iPod service under Computer/Device Manager - it doesn't ever seem to stop or start, with the iPod plugged in or not.
And interestingly enough, the FAT32 external harddrive that I use to back up my data exhibits exactly the same problem ("Windows could not find the driver for your USB Mass Storage Device). This device worked great in XP, and even odder, I have a FAT32 partition of the main HD as a swap space between my VistaOS and my Ubuntu installation.
Do I have to chalk this up to another issue with Windows Vista? What bothers me there is that you're a ping-pong between windows support and apple support - no one really owns up the problem.

Bill, I've been stuck in this loop for 3 months since buying a new laptop with Vista Basic. I've tried everything to no avail. I don't know what else to do apart from buying a cheap PC running XP. Let me know if you manage to find a solution and I'll do the same.
    Regards. Adam

  • Ipod classic not shown in itunes

I have recently been having A LOT of problems with my 3 month old 80gb ipod classic. i used to get the (-48) error and then i started to get the (-69) error. i tried some suggestions and nothing seemed to be working and then earlier this week i got the (-50) error. i used the link that is supplied on this board to solve it, but it only made things worse! now when i plug my ipod in, nothing shows up in itunes although it shows that my ipod is plugged in in My Computer. Also, i have read that i should go to Disk Manager in the control panel, but my ipod is not shown there like i am told it should be. someone please help me, I'm going crazy!!

I'm very disappointed with this problem, which I had also. Suddenly, I couldn't sync my ipod u2 special edition with the provided firewire cable. The ipod just wasn't shown in itunes. Happily, my wife have a newer ipod with was shipped with an usb sync cable. So now I have to sync my ipod with the usb cable, just because Apple decided to leave old ipod owners without sync capabilities. Ah, of course, if you don't want to buy a new cable....very disappointing.
This strategies reminds me of the times were Steve Jobs wasn't in the company and I had to go for a Windows machine because buying an old RAM memory was simply impossible. Don't do it again, please, don't leave old mac users at the side of the road.

It appears that Itunes disconnects my Ipod from the pc. My Ipod still sync's up fine with Itunes on my old Windows XP pc.

  • Windows error msg:  "Can not write to drive G: Joe's iPod"

Halfway thru the download process (1780 songs) from itunes to my ipod I get a windows error msg:
"Can not write to file G: Joe's ipod. All the data has been lost. Check for an error on your computer or network."
Getting the error msg: " Can not write to drive G: Joe's ipod. All data has been lost, your computer or network may have failed."
"Windows/ My computer" shows my ipod as drive G: and itunes starts up properly when I plug my ipod into my firewire port. About halfway thru the download (1780 songs) the transfer from itunes to my ipod stops and I get the above error message. (Never worked with USB). I am not on a network.
According to tech supt, I have:
    -Installed Service Pack 2,
    -Restored ipod to factory settings
-Installed update 5.0.1. Everything worked fine last Feb with the version 4 of itunes when I first loaded everything up.
Have tried to reinstall version 4, but no luck.
My ipod charges fine thru the firewire cable.
    Any ideas?? Thanx anyone.

    Joe,
I am having the same problem, did you ever solve it, please email me at [email protected] with any help

  • 5th generation ipod not detected by my windows xp.  works fine on other pc.  performed necessary steps to remove and reinstall itunes but having same issue. is there a driver i can download to pc then direct to that specific location when installing?

5th generation ipod not detected by my windows xp.  works fine on other pc.  performed necessary steps to remove and reinstall itunes but having same issue. is there a driver i can download to pc then direct to that specific location when installing?

I have a similar issue - my iPod nano connects and is visible in Device Manager yet invisible in My Computer and iTunes. I've tried everything I can possibly think of to try and solve this myself, all in vain.
Mine is a nano 4G. I've been using it for quite some time without the slightest problem. I have been using WINAMP instead of iTunes to manage my darling nano.
Then, one fine day I bought a new computer and the nano would not show up in My Computer, though the nano display shows "Do not disconnect". On my old computer it worked (and still works) absolutely fine with win XP as well as with win7 (the later I currently use on my new/problematic computer, which I bought last summer and that's how long I've had this problem).
Of course, after several first attempts I gave up and installed iTunes. I've tried using the Apple support article "iPod not recognized in 'My Computer' and in iTunes for Windows":
    - reset
    - fully charged,
    - cable works fine on two other computers
    - in normal or disk mode makes no difference
    - tried to find anything useful in the diagnostics mode
    - reinstalled iTunes several different times since then to the latest version
    - I've unplugged every other USB device except for my mouse and keyboard and tried several different USB ports on my motherboard (USB 3.0 and conventional), as well as trying different USB- related options in my BIOS.
    - I've never used any Mac with this ipod
    - I've tried fiddling with the win7 Services by stopping and restarting them and of course
    - uninstalling the iPod drivers in Device Manager. After such an uninstall the ipod would automatically be recognised and "ready for use", i.e. being invisible in My Computer.
    - Attempted to find any possible third-party conflict with msconfig or the possibility that my ipod is being confused for a network drive (for which I've disconnected my HDD, leaving only my SSD with the OS).
Sometimes, iTunes would note that iPod service (or something, can't remember exactly) failed to install properly and asked to try and repair it. I would click YES! and voila - no change! The ipod would rarely show up in iTunes on my problematic computer like this:
iTunes would warn me that the nano would need restoring so I would try and do it on my haunted machine upon which iTunes would freeze like you seen in the picture.
Despite this, I've updated and restored the nano on my father's computer to the latest version without any problems. This though, did not solve my problem in any way.
I can load music to my nano through my old computer (which for me is a real pain and hassle) and the gadget works normally in terms of its disconnected functionality.
I've taken my nano to the local service for repair and they said it was fine. Mercifully, they didn't charge for the diagnostics service (gee, thanks for not ripping me off!).
Here are two screengrabs from my Device Manager
and Devices and Printers screens on my comp:
That is my sad story as far as I can remember. It's most likely something with the drivers or something along those lines though I'm out of ideas at this point.
If you think you have any idea PLEASR HELP, I'M DESPERATE!
