IPod Not Turning Off or Pausing??!

My iPod...
1.) Won't turn off.
2.) Won't pause.
3.) When a song is playing, it won't get out of the volume control (even when I press the center button).
4.) It takes 2 tries to make it get out of the album cover and back to a menu.
5.) Holding the Menu button down doesn't make it go back to the Main Menu anymore.
6.) When I go to a video, the volume control won't go away, and the video won't play right away.
7.) The scroll either goes too fast or too slow.
Can anyone help me?! I've tried restoring it a bunch of times and that fixes it for about 2 seconds. Plugging it into the computer helped for a couple seconds, too, but that's it...
Help!

Take your iPod Nano to your local Apple Store or an AASP. You may have a hardware problem.

  • Does your IPOD not turn off properly??? Does it click with the screen off?

    Guys,
I know there is someone bright out there,
I have recently bought a Ipod 5g black 60gb, and the thing wont 'turn off' I believe appple call it shut down. Am i right in saying it goes to sleep, and thats it, the screen turns off, and it goes to sleep??
The strange thing is, the clicker wheel sometimes still clicks if you rub your fing over it, (screen off) and obviously pressing any button turns it fully on.
The two clicking noises are different, sometimes it sounds as if you are turning the volume up, and down, or other times it just sounds like you are scrolling through a music album list.
Apple tech support, wasnt very helpful and she suggested the 5 r's well done them, and still not working, i have found a medicore solution, and that is to put the thing physically to sleep, ie have a shortcut, to sleep on the main menu, and this turns the display, can anyone confirm whether this is the same has holding down the play button?
(would a diagnostic check pick this up)
Obviously, i am worried about the battery, because it wont turn off. I tried testing the copacity of the battery, but i cant, as for some strange reason, i cant rip (geniuine) AAC or MP3 music at the desired, level, for some reason cant hear it at all? or it just sqeulches.
I would be very interested in hearing from anyone experienced anything similar, or if the great person who invented this cool thing, is reading, please post a reply!!
    Thanks for your time,
ps sorry fpr the long post!!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    See this for more info...
About Sleep, Deep Sleep, Hibernation, and Sleep Timer
The iPod doesn't fully turn off for a while. (Hibernation, or even more "Off", Deep Sleep).
When you manually turn the iPod off (or it turns itself off), it goes into sleep.
After you turn it off, it may still make noise when you rub your finger on the clickwheel. This may occur for about a minute. You could always activate the hold switch after you turn it off.
But it is normal for the iPod to make the clickwheel noise when you rub your finger along the clickwheel right after the iPod is turned off. It may take a minute or so to fully go into "Sleep."
Again, everything you are experiencing is normal. Read that link for more info as well.

  • IPod not turning OFF!

If i hold down the Play/Pause button my ipod does not go off... and no the hold button is not on! I have held it down for long periods of time but it doesnt turn off! And it doesnt help after I plug it into my computer either. this bites! HELP!
oh, and i have the 2nd generation iPod nano

When you hold down the play/pause button, does the screen vanish for a second and reappear right away? And/or does the back light just dim with the words still on the screen?
Cause I've got the same problem. I'm pretty sure its a glitch in the software and there's nothing you can do about it. It will turn off after trying quite a few times, but I've found it's best to just leave the ipod on the main menu, with nothing playing, and wait. The ipod has an idle shutdown of about two minutes, and it should shut down itself.

  • 5th Generation iPod not turning off

OK I saw the other posts for solutions to how to turn the 5th Gen iPod off when it is frozen. I have tried those (standard resetting, plugging it back in and resetting, hitting the forward button and resetting, etc) nothing seems to work - I don't know but hope it is using enough power to deplete the battery. It has been working fine since I got it in December until I downloaded a few new videos and songs from iTunes last night. Anyone else have any suggestions on how to get it to reset?
    Thanks!

I am having the exact same problem. Here is a list of things I have tried
    1. Resetting by holding down middle button + menu.
    2. Connecting Ipod to computer and then disconnecting than turning off
    3. Letting battery run dead, recharge Ipod, than disconnect and try and turn off
    None of them work!
What do I do in this situation?
Also I am getting a screen that says "FireWire Connections are not Supported. To Transfer songs, connect the USB cable provided" when it is sitting in the dock and stationary, and I only have a USB cable that is connected to my computer.

  • This is rediculous (ipod not turning off, itunes not working)

I got the Ipod about two months ago (so still relatively new) and today when i went to charge my ipod and put my new music on there, the ipod froze at the do not disconnect screen, then I noticed my itunes hadn't recognized it was plugged in. So i disconnected my ipod yet it still says do not disconnect.
So I plugged it back in and it said there was a corrupt file and it would clean it up, and then it froze, so nothing was fixed, now it won't recognize it again no matter how many times i disconnect it, and my ipod won't turn off.
    Any suggestions?

Now it says my ipod is corrupt (it was fine 15 minutes ago) and i try to restore the original settings and it says "There was a problem downloading the Ipod software for for the Ipof "iPod". The requested resource was not found."

  • My iPod 160GB just does not turn OFF!

My iPod 160 GB just does not turn off. Every time i press down the play/pause button, the iPod switches off and comes ON almost immediately. This happens even when i switch it off and immediately turn on the "Hold" button. I am having this problem only since the last 2 months or so. What could be the problem?

Then you should try restoring the iOS software next. Read this and pay attention to the last part of the article that describes recovery mode, you may have to restore your iPad that way.

  • 30GB ipod will not turn off

Everything seems to be working fine, music, videos, connection to itunes, and no sudden trauma has happened to the ipod. It just will not turn off and I am wondering if there is another way besides holding the pause/play button. Should I reset all settings? Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Try holding the MENU and SELECT (center) buttons until you see the Apple logo to reset your iPod - then see if it'll turn off.
    Cheers!

  • My ipod will not turn off please help???

Everything works on my ipod, but it will not turn off. It will play and pause but not turn off.

I too have had this problem. In fact it seems to be a fairly common problem, suggesting that it is an unaddressed bug.
    Here's what you can try:
    1. Reset your iPod by holding down the Menu and Select buttons simultaneously for 5-10 seconds. After your iPod reboots, see if it will turn off. If not:
    2. Restore your iPod using iPod Updater, which you can download from http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/ . Restoring your iPod will delete all songs, pictures etc and reload the iPod's operating system. If that doesn't fix it, you can:
    3. Try a work-around. Can you turn it off using the Sleep menu option? If you don't see that in the main iPod menu, go to Settings/Main Menu and turn on the Sleep menu option. This didn't work for me, but others have een able to turn their Nanos off this way.
If none of these things work, your only option is to have Apple replace you iPod. You can do this by contacting Apple support, or by going to the Genius Bar at an Apple retail store.
Several people (including me) have seen the not-turning-off problem in conjunction with the Nano frequently showing a message saying that firewire connections are not supported. In my case my Nano became unusable because the firewire message would pop up so often that I couldn't navigate through the menus to get it to play anything. I took my Nano to an Apple store and the Genius Bar guy replaced it on the spot. Unfortunately the replacement also doesn't work (headphone jack doesn't work so I can't hear any music) so I will have to go back again, but don't let my run of bad luck prevent you from getting a replacement.

  • Ipod will not turn off, no longer recognized

iPod asked to update to latest software.  Upload failed and ipod left in state where it will not turn off, and is no longer recognized in itunes or as a device.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Ipod nano firewire error and will not turn off! PLEASE help

I am having the exact same problem as I see may of you unfortunate Apple users are. I am receiving the error message about firewires and I have never used one. The nano will not turn off and I have to let the battery run out. The play/pause function works perfectly fine, but not to turn off the nano. The sleep function does not do anything either. I am so disappointed with Apple because they would not help me on the phonbe since it is well past my first 90 days of ownership. I may have gotten a single drop of water on it, but that was about 2 weeks ago, and still having the same problems. I don't know what to do, but I see that Apple has gotten mighty rich off of their JUNK products! Anyone out there, help me please!

Do a reset.  You will not lose any data: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If this does not help resore from a backup.  See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
Lastly try restoring to factory settings.
If none of this works, it's probably a hardware problem.  Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of your Apple store.  You are under warranty and they will fix or replace it on the spot.

    Hi
It seems to be ok now... I had to go out and it ran out of battery, when I switched it back on it  appears to be fine.
If it happens again (hoping that it doesn't!) and i do the reset.. will that remove all the music that's on there?
    Sorry for the ignorance
    Thank you for the answer

  • HT204370 I paused the movie download but did not turn off my IPad.  When I returned to restart, it has said "waiting" for over an hour.

I paused the movie download but did not turn off my IPad.  When I returned to complete the download, the "waiting" message has been on the screen for over an hour.  How can I complete the download?

I recommend purchasing lion on a USB drive at Apple Store. This will avoid all of the downloading hassles.
Also, be sure you clone your hard drive first. A lot of people want to go back to Snow Leopard and if you choose to do this cloning will make the process very easy.
