IPOD OK in Windows, Diagnostics in iTunes can see it, but it's not listed.

Hello,
I have a 5th Gen iPOD and use iTunes V8.1.0.52 (latest) in Windows Vista on a PC.
When I connect the iPod to the PC, Windows recognised it as disk F, and iTunes starts up automatically. However, the device does not appear in the iTunes Source Devices, so I am unable to restore the iPod.
I have run the diagnostics on iTunes, which correctly states that an iPod is connected.
Does anybody know why it may not actually be displayed in the panel on the left side of the iTunes screen, even though iTunes knows about it?
Many thanks,
Rob.

This one was written for iTunes 7 (and probably not updated for Vista) but perhaps might be helpful...

I don't normally use iTunes with Windows and when I do it is on XP, so I can not be of much more help other than the above.
Good luck,
Patrick
