IPod only plays through one earphone.

Hi.
I have a 5th gen iPod video 30gb.
I've had it for years, but recently it has started to only play music through the left earphone.
I've checked that the earphones work and that my songs are stereo instead of mono.
The most interesting thing is that when I plug it into my car's head unit by the dock connector at the bottom, it still only plays music through the left speakers of my car, so it can't just be an issue with the headphone jack, surely?
I imagine that there could possibly be an incorrectly set fader setting somewhere, but I can't seem to find where that would be.
If anybody has any ideas on how to resolve this issue, I'd be much obliged.
Thanks.

It could be signs of dying audiochip on the iPod's motherboard, which is/was pretty common for the 5G iPod Video generation. Either way, it sounds like you need to have the iPod serviced or replaced.

  • Sound only plays through one earphone

hey i'm new here so bear with me if i make any mistakes.
recently my 30GB ipod video started playing sound only through one earphone, i tried several different pairs but the problem was the same. i took it to my local apple shop and they said it can't be fixed, but you could have it replaced for £109, i'm a student i don't have £109!
he said i could get a radio remote, something like this:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Apple-MA070G-C-Radio-Remote/dp/B000MTEER4/ref=pdbbs_sr4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1200145716&sr=8-4
i wasn't prepared to spend that much so just got a standard remote control with no radio function, however i didn't realise that this had to be connected through the headphone socket! what's the cheapest and most convenient way i can get sound going through both my headphones again? can i get a standard remote that just goes through the adapter at the bottom?
    many thanks, jack

I have the same problem! Im looking for anyway just to hear music out of both head phones, but I don't care which port I use. If anyone knows any ways I could soder(sp?) together a par of head phones with a iPod usb-thingy could you tell me how to?

  • TS1382 why does my ipod only play through one headphone?

i tried other headphones although no matter what kind of headphones i use, the left headphone will only play. anyone know why?

If none of the 5 R's also help resolve this problem, it's likely hardware related with the headphone jack meaning you'll need to have the iPod serviced/replaced either by Apple or a third party service.

  • Ipod touch only plays through one speaker when docked to car

It was working fine yesterday until I restored my touch and now this morning only plays through the left speaker. Ive read other topics with people that have this problem but no answer that fixes the problem.
I have a 8g touch and an alpine system in my car. The cord is fine because my old video works perfectly and the touch has no problem connecting to the computer.

hmmm sounds like a could be either a faulty connection in your alpine, or the ipod touch has a problem sending the signal through the USB Pin look into google search for this kind of problem, but I would try another cable or a new usb cable. either way it could be the connection to the audio pin section of the usb connector of your alpine.

  • My Ipod only plays through its onboard speaker i want to use my headphones again help!!

My IPod Nano only plays through it speaker even when the headphones are plugged in.What can I do to fix this problem?

The earphones must be pushed very hard into the iPod. So hard, that the white part of the plug must touch the iPod in order for the external speakers to turn off. You will hear a click.
If you do a forum search, you will find this same solution. If it does not work, you will need to take your iPod to an apple store or call the Apple iPod tech support if still under warranty or you have Apple Care.

My ipod touch only plays through the headphones

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so. There is a little switch in the headphone jack that disconnects the speaker when the headphone jack is inserted.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
If not under warranty Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for this price. They do not fix yours.

  • My 3gs has stopped playing through the speakers and when the headphones are plugged in only plays through one ear? it still ring when called and everything else seems fine, whats the problem? it seems like the phone thinks the earphones are always in?

my 3gs has stopped playing music through the speakers, they play with headphones but only through one ear. It seems the phone thinks the headphones are in all the time. The ringer still works when called and i have cleaned the headphone socket the best i can without damaging the phone! Any ideas?

I had the same issue, 4s running ios8, but the plugging and unplugging the headphones did not work, BUT, when I tried plugging and unplugging from the DOCK, it started to work again. There must have been a short in the power plug, not the headphones. I also blew out the bottom power plug with computer safe airjet. Hope this one helps anyone else having the issue.

  • Music only playing through one speaker

I had an Ipod nano second generation that would only play music through one speaker when connected through a wire so I bought a new nano third generation. The new nano has the same issue. I have bought 3 different wires which would work for a period of time then start playing only through one speaker. I have also had my car speakers checked out and there are no issues there. Is there a problem with the jack inside the Ipod? What can I do?

We have started to have similar problems plugging into the auxiliary jack of a car radio. Sometimes one speaker, sometimes the other, depending on the cable, and occasionally both. Connecting and disconnecting the iPod to the car's battery changes the speaker that works.

  • Audio port only plays through one speaker

Hi i have a 2nd gen i pod touch and audio only come through the right speaker in my head phones i have used multiple head phones and the same problem occurs, ik its not the head phones bc they work fine when hooked up to any thing else.
so i assume its the jack that has the problem.
    PLZ help ASAP

If restoring the iPod t factory default via iTunes doe not solve the problem then it is very likely a hardware problem. This place will fix it for $58:

  • IPhone only plays through one speaker

Just recently my iPhone has stopped working on one side through the speakers. This is also is the same thing when listening through the speakers.
Has anyone had a similar problem??

When you say "speaker" do you mean the speaker on the iPhone or one of the channels on the ear buds?
If one of your earbuds isn't playing music, the cord may have gotten damaged. Try another pair of buds and see if the missing sound channel comes back.
If it is your ear buds, call (800) my-iphone and talk to tech support. I had a pair of buds get static-ky aproximately 1.5 months post purchased and Apple shipped me a replacement pair at no cost. They will expect you to return the defective pair, so don't think this is a way to get a free "spare pair" of earbuds!

  • Ipod only playing out one speaker

my ipod has suddenly just stopped playing out of my right headphone, its not the headphone as i've tested that ... anyone know how to resolve this ?

don't bother, if there's an apple store near you
the exact same thing happened to me, i took it to the Genius Bar
they gave me a new one completely free, no questions asked (didnt even ask for a proof of purchase)
but no, dont try opening it up

  • Ad-46 only plays to one earphone

I just bought the AD-46 and plugged in my tried-and-true stereo headphones. I only hear music in one ear. What's the deal? I thought the ad-46 is a stereo adapter.

  • The sound will only play through one side of the ear buds

I have had my ipod classic 160GB for several years now. One day recently it just stopped emitting sound from one side of my ear buds. I tried different ear buds with no results. If I leave the ear bud jack plugged in half way in then it works, but I do not want to keep it unsecured like that. I do not still have my warranty on the ipod otherwise I would have contacted Apple directly.

You can obtain a replacement headphone jack/hold switch assembly from eBay or other online store. Opening the iPod isn't the easiest thing but it can be done with the accompanying tools, and a bit of patience and effort. Once the back is off the actual replacement of the components is quite easy though the screws are tiny. I've done half a dozen of these and/or battery swap outs.
