IPod only shown as external hard drive in my computer

Hey
My iPod is only shown in my computer, no where else. It dosen't come up in itune and when i try to use the iPod uodater to restore it, an error comes up or it freezes. When i try to open it in my computer, it tells me it is and external hard drive but needs formatting.
Whats going on and how can i fix it
thanx
HB (iPod is a 4g with click wheel)

Had the same problem with my new 60G ipod. Even had i replaced with apple.
- The solution was to buy an external USB2 hub at the cost of 20 USD.
Now it works without any problems. The USB2 hub needs to have an external powersupply and it can ge bought for around the magic 20 USD. The hub has 4 ports and can thus be used to connect other USB devices.
I´ll bet it will solve your problem - again it was the exactly same for me. BEst Regards,
John

Bare in mind that Sync is only oneway, from PC to your device. Unless you have the same music on your PC, iTunes is going to wipe out what you have on your device if you are syncing to a new library.
You can only transfer Purchased music over to Itunes on your PC.

As for you own music, you may have to use a third party software. A good Free one is called Sharepod which you can download from Download.com here:

  • US iPod Touch in France - iPod Touch as an external hard drive

    Hi everybody,
I work for a while in the US and soon go back to France. But before leaving, I would like to buy an iPod Touch as it is clearly more expensive in Europe.
Question : how can I change the interface to french, including the virtual keyboard (from QWERTY to AZERTY)?
What about warranty ? Does it work in Europe ?
Last question, is it possible now with the last firmware update to use the iPod Touch as an external hard drive ?

Oh sure, All my iPods are from US, and I live in India.
    For language and keyboard
    Home>Settings>General>International>Language>French
    and then in International>Keyboard>French(3rd option)
Yup, the warranty is international, I have got my US iPod video replaced in India.
No, thats something Apple has not done, maybe with the version 2.0 due in June.
    Hope for the best!

  • Can I use my 160gb iPod classic as an external hard drive for my MacBook?

Can I use my 160gb iPod classic as an external hard drive for my MacBook?

That link seems to be broken.  It does normally lead to a solution. For the time being go to
    http://www.google.com/search?q=ipod+classic+disk+mode
Let your mouse hover over the link until you see the option appear on the right to view the cached version Google contains:
Putting iPod devices with a Click Wheel into Disk Mode
If necessary, verify that your iPod has a Click Wheel.
Before placing the iPod into Disk Mode, verify that it is charged.
Toggle the Hold switch on and off (set it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons for at least six seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
When the Apple logo appears, release the Menu and Select buttons and immediately press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears.
Connect the iPod to your computer; the screen on the iPod will should say "Do not disconnect".
If you are having difficulty putting your iPod into Disk Mode, set it on a flat surface. Make sure that the finger pressing the Select button is not touching the Click Wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Play/Pause button toward the outside of the Click Wheel and not near the center. If you are still unable to put your iPod into Disk Mode, use one finger from one hand to press the Select button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Play/Pause button.
If you have an older iPod model, without a Click Wheel
Before placing the iPod into Disk Mode, verify that it has a charge.
Toggle the Hold switch on and off (set it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
Press and hold the Play/Pause and Menu buttons until the Apple/iPod logo appears, then release them. This resets iPod. When you reset iPod, all your music and data files are saved, but some customized settings may be lost.
When the Apple logo appears, immediately press and hold the Previous and Next buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears.
Connect the iPod to your computer; the screen on the iPod should say "Do not disconnect".
If you have an iPod nano (6th generation)
Before placing the iPod into Disk Mode,  verify that it has a charge.
Reset the device by pressing the Sleep and Volume Down buttons simultaneously until the display turns black. This should take about eight seconds.
When the display turns black, hold down the Volume Down and Volume Up buttons simultaneously until the device enters Disk mode.

  • Trying to move iPod library to an external hard drive

Okay I am totally confused and hope that some of you can help me. I have a 60GB iPod and a few months ago I tried to move my library to an external portable hard drive (so it wouldn't take up so much room on my computer hard drive) using the instructions in the manual for iPod. Moving the library using the instructions in the manual did not include my playlists and play count and etc. Then I realized that when I opened iTunes the file names were there but the songs wouldn't play. So I came to the message board for help. Someone gave me links to info on how to move the music from iPod to iTunes including play count and etc. Well I tried that but all of the songs were not transferred (I have over 7000 on my iPod now) and some songs are being transfered more than once when I try to run the program again to add the songs that were missed. This whole process has been a mess!!!! So I just stopped working with it. So now I really just need to start from the beginning. I want to rebuild my library from my iPod to iTunes but I want the iTunes library to be on an external hard drive so that it is not taking up all the extra room on my laptop. Can this be done? Can someone help me please!!!! I am in desperate need of help!!! Thanks!!!

Usually, I set up my ExHDs to be a letter that is farther down the alphabet. Try 'M:' for Music, or 'T:' for Tunes. That way, anything else you add will not take up that drive letter inadvertently.
Remap you ExHD to another letter. See the instructions below:
    -- Click on 'Start'
    -- Right-click on 'My Computer'
-- Select 'Manage' from the drop down box
-- That will launch the 'Computer Management' utility. From there, select 'Disk Management'
-- If you right-click on the ExHD drive letter, you should be able to 'Change Drive Letter and Path'
-- Change only one drive letter at a time
-- Reboot after the change, for it to take effect.
    -- Repeat for additional drives

  • Syncing iPad to iPod from iTunes on external hard drive

I had all my music stored on my laptop but was running out of space so I transferred it all to an external hard drive. That's when everything went pear shaped! Tried to sync it all but messed it up. Now I have all songs on iPad, but it won't sync new stuff to iPod plus there is only new songs ( recently purchased ) on iTunes. Would love to know how to sync up iPad to iPod and iTunes so it all matches. Have tried the iTunes info icon but still can't get it to sync. Has anybody had problems with external hard drives when it comes to syncing iTunes?
    Thanks in advance
    Penny

If your library is full of broken links then try fixing them with my FindTracks script, otherwise see this post by forum regular Zevoneer for options on transferring files from the iPad to your computer.
Alternatively, if your iTunes database is missing files that should be in it then perhaps there is a previous iTunes library file kicking around your internal drive somewhere that could be restored and reconnected to your media.  It all depends on exactly what you did to start with. Switching to a new database tends to get things confused as iTunes will want to wipe the device and start over.

  • Is it possible to back my ipod touch to an external hard-drive

my ibook G4 is nearly 10 years old and the memory space is going so i am unable to store my music on my itunes library so i only have one copy of all my music and that is on my ipod touch. my dad recently bought an external hard-drive and i was wondering if there was a way of backing up my itouch without having to use my laptop. if i lost all my music i would die
Message was edited by: seth jones

    Hi,
While Jolly Giant's advice is sound, it only applies if your music is in your iTunes library on your iBook, from what I can understand from your post this is not your situation.
To retrieve your music from your touch I would suggest you read the (famous) post by "Zevoneer" (Thank you Zevoneer.)
    [Click Here|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11095330&#11095330]
He explains how to get your music off without risking losing it, you will need to use your laptop or another computer but I should think the music could be saved directly through to your ext. HD, read carefully, when you have finished make sure you back up elsewhere properly.
    Good luck,
    Dud.

  • Backing up music files from 60GB iPod (directly) to an external hard drive

I'm interested in backing up all of the music that's currently stored in my iPod. First off, I suppose it would entail knowing how to locate the music files within the iPod, and then figuring out how to upload.
One step I'd also prefer to avoid is to have to copy my music onto my laptop (to iTunes) and then reroute to the external hard drive. Would it be possible to just route/copy the music directly from iPod to external hard drive? I don't think I have enough memory to house all of my 30gb worth of music all at once on my computer, so if I do end up having to go through the laptop, I'd have to download in batches.
Ultimately, I'm just trying to avoid having to download all of my music files from my CDs again. It took me two months last time, which is way too long an ordeal.
Any help/ tips/ previous threads on the topic would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Senuti won't work on Windows, it's for Mac only.
Try Yamipod. This is a similar free program which works on both Mac and Windows that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.

  • USING IPOD, ITUNES AND AN EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE-URGENT

Greetings. All my songs are save in my extereal portable hard drive (Under the music folder). I DO NOT like saving song in the hard drive of my ibook because it eats up too much space. When I connect the external hard drive to my mac and open itunes, the songs do not come out in itunes. The songs only come out when i connect my ipod. My seeting for my ipod is manual. What I would like to do is- whenever i transfer songs to itunes, the song in my ipod are also automatically updated. the songs in the external hard drive should also be updated. In short, the songs that i should have in the ipod should be the songs in itunes and in the external drive. how do i do this? what settings should i do? I am afraid to click on automatically update songs because it might erase my whole ipod library. Please advise. thanks.

First I would use Finder and go verify that your songs are actually on your external hard drive. If they are, then make sure you specified iTunes directory is pointing to the correct directory on that external hard drive.
If both look ok, then go ahead and switch it on over to automatic. Otherwise, if the songs still arent showing up just re-add them all to your library.

  • How do I change permissions from read only on my external hard drive?

I'm a new convert from PC to MAC and I'm kicking myself because it's been **** ever since.
My music and business documents are all kept on an external hard drive and that hard drive is NTSF.
My MacBook is reading the whole drive as read only. I'm trying to add my huge library to the cloud but it's not reading it all.
How can I convert the drive to FAT without losing everything. I have 91 gigs of music that as a dance teacher, cannot afford to lose.
    Please help!

If I'm only using Mac now, do I still follow #2 from above?
If you are going to use the external drive only with Macs now, you can consider the option to format the external drive with "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". In this case, only Macs will read the external drive, but compatibility will be better.
    chombitafeya wrote:
If I go out and buy an external hard drive that's Mac compatible, will I still be able to transfer the files from my NTSF drive to the new Mac compatible drive or do I have to use a pc to solve this problem?
First of all, note that all external drives are compatible with Macs. If you find external drives which come as "for Macs", that's because they come formatted in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".
In that case, you will be able to transfer the files from the NTFS drive. Note that you can read NTFS drives and you can copy files from the NTFS drive to your Mac or other disks. The only thing you can't do is copy files to the NTFS drive

  • Ipod not responding with external hard drive

I have a 30 gb ipod and I have a external hard drive that holds all of my music. When the external hard drive is NOT plugged in everything works fine. However, when I plug in the external hard drive the problem starts. When I connect my ipod the please do not disconnect screen comes up and flashes. Yet, there is no spinning wheel in the top left corner, it causes itunes to freeze for a long period of time, and my ipod is not recognized by itunes or windows.

  • Upgrading to Mavericks wrecked my MacBook Pro & now it only works when external hard drive is plugged in

So I tried to upgrade to Mavericks today and it failed (same error as in this post which seemed to be a common problem). It wouldn't let me repair the disk, and after trying all sorts I rebooted my computer in recovery mode - it wouldn't let me reinstall Lion because the hard drive was apparently locked and I could see no way around this. So I decided to restore from a Time Machine backup on an external hard drive and that worked okay, except my MacBook now only works when the external hard drive is connected. If I remove the external hard drive, I'm back to square one as it still won't let me reinstall Lion as the HD is locked!
I have no idea what's going on. HELP!

The startup drive is failing, or there is some other internal hardware fault.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Read-Only Access to external hard drive

I have a Fantom Drive 1 TB external hard drive connected to my computer. I only have "read only" access however. I've tried changing the permission to no avail. The readme.txt file for the drive says - "THIS DRIVE HAS BEEN PREFORMATTED FROM THE FACTORY USING THE NTFS FILE SYSTEM... NTFS has limited compatibility with Mac OS (requires 10.4 and newer, read only"
Does this mean I'm out of luck or is there something I can do that will allow me read/write access to this drive?
    Thanks - Leah

Natively in OSX, you only have read-only access to NTFS partitions. Here's a free utility that's supposed to work for what you want (I've not tried it):
