Ipod Photo charging problems

HELP!!
When I charge my iPod Photo, the charging icon animates, and all seems well.
However, when I unplug the charging lead, (even after it charging overnight), the battery status indicator is lower than before the charging started, almost as if the charging process has actually UNCHARGED it!
This happens when I charge it from my PC and when I charge it from the wall adapter, but does not do it when I charge from my car kit.
Please help as soon as possible.
Many thanks - Gary
Toshiba Satellite Pro A60   Windows XP Pro

Sorry, realised I didn't explain this very well.
Basically. iPod doesn't work. At all.
Plugged it in to charge. The apple icon comes up for a while, then is dies. If I press select + menu, the apple icon comes up for a while, then dies. If I leave the iPod alone, the apple icon keeps coming up, then dying (I can hear something "switch off" when it dies too.
Thanks,

  • Ipod photo restore problems

i recently bought a second hand ipod and decided to restore it so i could start again. i followed the directions correctly. when the connect to mains icon appeared, i done so accordingly. sadly nothing happened. the icon still appeared even though i had attached it to the mains. i have also tried a car charger and even re-attaching it to my pc on different usb ports with different usb cables.
i hope i'm not left with a fancy paper weight.
    thanks in advance.

the system files of your iPod get corrupted, thats why you get the folder exclmation marks.
    see the following helps
    Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
    http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

I am not suggesting that you should follow as well, but just read them as your reference. You are the person to make the call.
Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote

  • Ipod battery charging problem not found in any posts

    OK here's the problem
The battery meter on my 5g flashes that charging symbol, even when it's not plugged in the wall.
And sometimes when I use my friends griffin charger it charges and than stays on the charged symbol even after I unplug it.
Also my apple charger doesn't work at all (not just mine, I borrowed my friends and it doesnt either work).
Also when I plug into the computer it mounts but doesn't charge.
OK I'll tell you what I did so far: I read ALL of apples related battery documents. I restored. I depleted the battery and recharged it. I bought a new cable.
I used my friends computer. I used the back USB port. Nothing is helping the ipod.
By the way I know for a fact that this all started when one time i did actually use the front usb port. It sort of jinxed the whole battery meter into it's current state. Any one with this problem? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

  • IPod Photo Initializing problems

Well after my iPod Photo for no apparent reason stopped working the other day. I plugged it in and it did that Apple logo and then low battery. I tried reseting it, but no use. So I put it to disk mode and tried to initialize it, but it doesn't get pass partitioning it. I left it over night and still. I even tried the restore button in the iPod Updater, but no use, it said that the hard drive was messed or something. Does anyone know how I can fix this? Any 3rd Party software. Or would anyone know how long the warranty is on th iPod Photo 40 GB?

In the address book program you can specify if the card is for a person or a company. It's under the Card menu. selecting "This Card is a Company" will switch the name and company fields, and change the icon from a card to a little factory. Then the company appears on the iPod's list, not the name.
This is how i have mine set up and the company cards are grouped together just right.
And about numbers not showing up in the "main" field. I did a test and putting a number in that defualt field works and syncs fine for me so I dont know what to tell you except make sure you have all the updated software.
I have Tiger, Address book 4.0.2, iTunes 5, and iPod software 1.2
    Hope that helps!

  • Changed firmware on 30g ipod photo, got problems

I used ipod wizard to load the UBH 1.2.2 (backgrounds) for 5th Generation into my 30g ipod photo & now I have a white screen on my ipod telling me to connect to my computer & use itunes to restore.
I'm looking at the properties for my ipod's drive in "my computer" & can see that my capacity is still 21g use & 6g free space so obviously my stuff is still on it but how do I get it back to normal without losing anything?
Is there a way to re-install the original firmware??? I really don't want to restore & lose everything.
I've updated itunes to the latest version & now itunes is telling me "Itunes has detected an ipod in recovery mode, you must restore this ipod before it can be used with itunes.
    Any suggestions?

Your unit has a hardware issue that an Apple technician is not allowed to repair, nor do they have the parts to repair it (Apple doesn't stock parts for units of that generation).
You can check around at Apple stores and see if they get a part - sometimes people trade in old iPods and those units are parted out by Apple techs to fix older units - but that will be tougher to predict.
Your best bet is to take the unit to a cell-phone repair shop - a lot of those places will fix damaged iPods as well.
You probably have a broken hard drive that needs replacing. You can buy a replacement online, it's a Toshiba 30 GB slim-fit HDD, it can help you if you open your unit (very carefully) to see the exact name of the hard drive so you can order the replacement.
There are FAQ's online on how to replace the drive yourself, or you can take it to a cell-phone repaire place.

  • IPod photo transfer problem

I am having trouble getting my photos from my iPod to a computer. When I connect the iPod to its home computer, the box to use the iPod as a disk drive and the box to include full size photos are both checked. When I open the iPod drive icon in 'My Computer' there is a folder named Photos, but the only things inside are a file named 'Photo Database' and a folder named 'Thumbs.' Inside the Thumbs folder there are various fairly large '.ithmb' files, but there is no sign of any standard photo formats. Any thoughts on what might be going on or how to get my photos would be much appreciated. Thanks.

There are various programs out there for recovering photos from an iPod, have a look at the ones below. If you search the internet you can find more:
    iPodPhotoCopy Windows only
    CopyPodPhoto Windows only
Tansee iPod Transfer Photo Windows only
iPod Photo Liberator Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
If you are only seeing a folder for Thumbs then it sounds like the the "Include Full Resolution photos" box was unchecked when the photos were added. iTunes has only added "optimised", small TV quality versions of the photos to the iPod for you to view.

  • Ipod nano charging problem

    I got ipod nano today.
After unpack I tried to charge 5 hours but it never charge up.
So I disconnected usb cable and tried to operate ipod even there was mark of very low charged mark on screen.
But it turned off suddenly with message of low battery.
So I had to charge again but I saw the big low battery sign with thunder mark on the center of screen with some buzzing sound and tiny bip sound when I connect ipod nano to USB port.
    Are these normal?

Bought an Ipod Nano today and I GOT THE SAME PROBLEM!!
I could not start it at all, charged it for like 4 hours, nothing helped.
What I though could do, was mount it to the PC, and the PC could feel it, and I could see the drive etc.
Now to the solution, I ran the update Ipod program, and updated the program in the Ipod, and RIGHT AWAY it lighted up and now it seems like it works?
Really strange.. Try to update yours to!

  • Zen Photo Charging problem/quest

Guys, I have the Zen Photo and generally like it a lot (except for the over sensiti've buttons) but I have a problem. It doesn't seem to charge.
I called tech support but the dude seemed to try to avoid the issue and gave me some bull**bleep** that I have to make sure I have the RIGHT type of usb port, it has to have the exact milli amperage, I could not charge on a machine that didn't have the software installed and so on.
Most of this sounded like a lot of bull to me but still. I tried to charge it at my home computer which is the one that has the creative software. I hook it up and it comes on. I turn it off which I assume is a good idea instead of letting it turn while it's being charged.
Anyway, the charging icon comes up with the flashing flash and then after a few seconds, it goes out.
Is the icon supposed to stay on?
Does the computer have to be on (I assume so)?
What about my other stuff above? Any usb port? Any computer with usb port?
    Thanks
    George

i only use the AC adapter.
no matter what state my battery is in it takes 3.5 hours for me.
weird. if my battery is empty it takes 3.5 hours
if my battery says 2 bars and i plug in the charger - it takes 3.5 hours for it to stop charging.
    anyways.

  • IPod Touch Charging problem

    Hi all,
I have not used my iPT in a few days and today I connected it to my PC to charge it up a bit. There were a few updates for some of my apps, I downloaded these via iTunes and synced to my iPT. When I started to charge it there the battery indicator was still in the green, it has now gone to red and I get the 10% battery remaining notice on screen. It's connecting to my PC fine so I know it's not the USB port.
Any ideas why the iPT will be losing power when it's supposed to be charging?

Sorry. fist time post and couldn't figure out how to post so simply replied to this post.
I too am having "trouble" charging a 2g 16gb touch. cable works - can sync. seems to be charging - battery icon on status bar quickly alternately blinking with charge icon (picture of lightning) and cable (picture of plug) icon - but the thing can't seem to charge. The device is 2 days old.
All I seem to get is this blinking icon or the low battery image - to no avail!! anyone?
