IPod Photo won't shutdown (almost everything tried)

Since a few days ago my iPod Photo 30GB won't shut off.
It just turns off (using the Menu+Select or the Sleep menu function) when it's plugged to a power source (wall or computer).
But when I unplug it, the battery drains even when it seems to be sleeping.
When I have the iPod fully charged it can play music for about 5 hours.
I'm not sure if the problem is the battery or something more serious...
This is what I've tried without success:
- Restart the iPod using the Menu+Select buttons. The iPod restarts, but still i can not shut down the iPod.
- Restore the iPod to factory settings.
- Update to the latest firmware version.
- Downgrade to first firmware version.
- Format the iPod's harddrive and run some disk utilities to see if the disk is ok. It is ok.
- Let's the battery drain and the fully charge it again.
- Using the diagnostics secret menu, the power tests seem to work ok (sleep forever and sleep), and the harddrive test too.
Thanks in advance for any help!
PD: The iPod is 2 years old, so it's out of warranty...
iPod Photo 30GB

Have you been using the iPod on a doc connector? I have been using my iPod photo (20GB) on a doc connector for the last few weeks and yesterday I noticed that she is not going to sleep mode at all. The back light timer goes to dim, but the iPod won't get back to sleep!
My guess is, having it connected for so long(playing or not playing music), I have somehow disturbed its sleeping pattern (or the embedded software that triggers the sleeping mode). However, I note that you have reset and re-installed the the firmware. In the last couple of months, have you had any luck?
Thanks in advance if you have any advice to share.
Cheers

  • IPod Photo won't charge with Power Adapter but charges through Computer....

Hi got this problem... searched the discussion board but didn't find any satisfying answers.
Hope somebody can help me out here.
    Problem description:
My iPod photo won't charge using the power adapter from Apple. Bought a second one won't work, used different cables won't work either.
however it does charge via the USB port of the computer.
And it also charges via the car stereo plug (forgot the real name but it's from the apple store).
So does anybody have a similar problem? Could it be the iPod that is defective and also destroyes the Power Adapter maybe?
didn't try a different iPod to charge yet. So that's one thing left to try for verification.
untill then maybe somebody knows help, and it might be just a little setting thing.
    Thanks for the Help

    hi Rene!
hmmmm. it sounds like you've already tried most of the things listed on these documents:
    iPod's battery doesn't charge
iPod: Troubleshooting the Apple iPod AC Adapter
iPod: About the Apple iPod Power Adapter
from what you're reporting, i'm currently most suspicious of the electrical outlets you're using with those adapters. if you try switching it to a different outlet, does it charge properly then?

  • IPod Photo won't display album artwork for purchased songs

I bought some songs on the ITunes Music Store, and I can see the album artwork on the ITunes, I can also see in my IPod the artwork for most of the songs that I've downloaded, but I CAN'T see the artwork for those recently purchased.
I also noticed that when I purchased songs I had a duplicated file for each one of them, stored in \iTunes\iTunes Music\ and \My Downloads\ respectively, so I deleted the copies from \My Downloads\
Bottom line is, I can see all the album artwork in my iTunes, but my iPod Photo won't display some of it (specifically, the songs that I purchased)

Probably, the easiest way to resolve this is to copy the artwork from one song on an album and paste it into every song on that album.
In your iTunes Library, choose an album that has artwork issues; choose one track that has the artwork and copy it. Then:
the slightly longer method is to check each song individually, until you find the one with the missing artwork. Paste (the copy previously made) from one of the other tracks on the album.
a slightly quicker method is to highlight all the songs on that album (make sure it is just that one album) and paste the artwork into the box.
Sync the iPod with your iTunes Library.

  • Ipod photo won't mount to itunes - please help me!  i'm desperate!

    Hey everyone,
Thanks in advance to whomever reads this and answers... I've been fighting with my ipod for over 12hrs now (over 3 days) and am VERY frustrated!
    here are my details:
    20 gig ipod photo
    Windows XP
    itunes 7
    Problem:
itunes told me it needed to be restored. So, I went through the process, but when I plugged it back into the computer (after plugging it into the wall socket), I found that it won't mount in itunes! BUT, I can see it in Windows explorer.
    Have tried:
    - changing disk drive
    - uninstall, reinstall, reinstalling from CD (with old version)
    - restore (when it was coming up in itunes)
    - different usb ports
    - fiddling with resets and disk mode
    Things to note:
    - in Windows Explorer it now comes up as IPOD instead of VANESSA'S IPOD. I don't know why!
    - when I plug it into the computer it seems completely happy - it's charged, is flashing the do not disconnect... everything normal! And, when it's not plugged in, I'm able to browse through the menus like normal - the only problem really appears to be that itunes won't recognise it.
I kind of feel like I've been trying a lot of different things, and maybe not in the right order? It feels like something really small that I'm missing...
If you have any ideas or suggestions, please please PLEASE let me know... as I said, I'm desperate...
    cheers

  • IPod Photo won't mount??

I was going to helpl a friend reinstall her iPod photo but for some reason it won't mount? I've looked in the system profiler and see's it connected, but in disk utility it doesn't see it. The ipod software tells me I can restore the ipod but not install the new drivers. It tells me it's not mounted but doesn't have an option to mount.
Other information: I have an older iPod (G3) and works perfectly but uses Firewire. Could it be this iPod wants to uses USB 2 and I'm connecting it with my old firewire cable from my G3? I've tried starting up the iPod in Disc Mode and that doesn't seem to work either. I would reinstall the ipod software but I want to get the information out of it first. There is also another problem, she needs this to work on a PC so if I do reinstall the software will it not work on a PC? I need help and fast since my friend leaves today to China.
Thanks in advance if someone can help me.

If you do a Restore for your friend's iPod with your Mac, then she cant use it with her PC. However, it works the another way round.

  • IPod Photo won't work at all...

my iPod Photo used to work just fine for over 6 months now... but suddenly it went dead.
I though that the battery needed to be charged, i plugged it in my powerbook but it wasn't recognized by the computer and it did not start charging. i plugged it in through power adapter and it won't charge again.
I tried to reset my ipod but nothing happens.
I can't restore or update the software, because my computer doesn't recognize ipod at all.
    any suggestions?
    I would really appreciate any...

Have you tried plugging it into the charger and leaving it overnight? I've read that if the battery is dead, this will happen. You won't see anything until the battery is sufficiently charged. This happened to mine once. My screen stayed off until the Ipod was sufficiently charged and then the screen came back on with a low battery level. Then, I left it on the charger overnight and it was okay.

  • 3 week old 60gb iPod Photo won't work

I bought a 60gb iPod Photo approximately 3 weeks ago. Very, very happy with my purchase even with the release of the video enabled Pod recently.
Anyway - this morning it refuses to work. It won't power up. Nothing. Blank screen.
Have tried all the resetting suggested in Apple support. Nothing. It just won't power up under any circumstances. (Tried plugging it to AC as well)
    Very frustrated.

Perhaps you should take it back to an Apple Store if possible, to have it checked.

  • Error iPod Photo won't update

I have 2600 songs in my library, but my iPod photo will only update about 1500. Then I get an error -XX Unable to update Cali's iPod an error occurred. I have 60GB so I know it is not a capacity issue. I tried the tips from Apple (deleting the photo directory) and completely re-formatting my iPod 3 times.
To make things worse. My library keeps getting corrupt and I have to import my CDs over and over again. The new thing is that all the files are being renamed to four letter files randomly. I have spent literally days on this. Can someone please help me? I never had this issue with my 20GB regular iPod. Could that be it?
    Please help,
    Cali

When's the last time you ran a virus checker?

  • Ipod photo won't restore in OSX

I've tried the five "r's", but the ipod updater won't recognize the ipod in order to restore. This ipod sync'd just fine a few weeks ago. I have reinstalled itunes and ipod software, still no go.
    Any ideas?

This is the same issue that I have. I believe it has something to do with transfering files onto your iPod during the same connection that you've used to automatically update your iTunes songs and playlists within iTunes. I've heard that even with "enable disk use" activated in your prefs, you still need to disconnect and reconnect in order to properly copy files onto your iPod. That also means switching your prefs to "automatically update playlists and songs" for when you connect for your iPod updates and then setting it to "manually update your playlists and songs" + "enable disk use" for when you want to use your iPod as a file transfer device.
Have your iPods all started acting up like this around the same time that you began copying files to your iPod? I would like to know what's causing this. This is second time (on 2 iPods!) that this has happened to me! I've never been able to trouble shoot it myself. I've always had to go back to the Applestore for a replacement.

  • 60 gig iPod Photo won't sync

I have a 60 gig iPod Photo that has stopped being recognized by the computer. I tried a new USB cable. Sometimes it will charge when connected to the computer, sometimes not. It will charge when plugged in to 12V source. I have tried it on more than one Mac, but no dice. Any suggestions/help would be appreciated. And yes, we have tried the reset several times!

Since you tried it on multiple Macs with a different cable, you've mostly eliminated the +bad docking cable+, +bad USB port+, and +something wrong with the Mac's system+ possibilities.
Question: When you have it connected to the power adapter, does it operate properly as an iPod? So does it display its screen menu and play songs?
If it does, then the hard drive is probably OK and not the problem. The problem may be that the dock connector on the iPod side has become worn or otherwise damaged. There are many pins on the connector, so it is possible for it to charge yet not connect for data.
If it does not work as an iPod (play music), for iPods with a hard drive, the hard drive is the most common failure point. So it is possible that the hard drive in your iPod has become faulty. Other possibilities are problem on the logic board and problem in the connection between the logic board and hard drive.
If the iPod does not get recognized by Disk Utility, the only other idea I can think of is to open it up. You can try disconnecting the battery and see if it connects to the Mac with no battery. You can try disconnecting the hard drive, inspecting the two connection points between the hard drive and logic board, and reconnecting.
    Here is a helpful guide.
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPod/iPod-4th-Generation/93
When opening the 4G iPod, it is easiest to start from the seam at the top end, because there are no clips there. Be careful at the top left corner (looking at the iPod from the front) because there is a delicate ribbon cable there connecting the two halves of the case. You do not want to yank it open at that corner. If possible, leave that connection alone; it can easily get damaged when trying to disconnecting the ribbon cable. You should be able to lay the iPod open, like a book, from the right side.
Be sure to use plastic tools to open the iPod. Metal tools will damage the case.

  • PowerBook won't shutdown correctly, Everything just freezes!

In the midst of updating quicktime and i-tunes the other day, somehow most of my computers functions became unresponsive. When I tried to force quit applications still nothing happened. I tried to shutdown my computer but it just got to a blank screen with just my desktop picture and it never turned off. The next morning finally I ended up forcing the shutdown by holding the power button. I restarted and things were off. The time along with most other things in the top right corner are no longer displayed. This I can't correct. Whenever I try to use an application it will work for maybe 15 seconds and then become unresponsive. Still nothing will force quit. Basically at this point I can't use my powerbook for anything, Safari, I-tunes, Ableton, quicktime, everything just freezes up. Please Help

  • Ipod touch won't turn on after trying to charge after the battery ran out

I was about to charge my ipod because it was below 10% but before I could it ran out. Now, when I plug it in to the computer or my Ipod wall charger, it won't come up in itunes and my wall charger says it is charging (red light) but 30 minutes later, my ipod won't turn on. I can't figure out why my ipod will not turn on and can't restore it in itunes otherwise I would have tried that. I can't reset it either since it won't even turn on. Do I just need to charge even longer? Or is it something else?

Thx alot for this thread, plus the solution. i was frekin out. i didn't do anything to the ipod for it to do what it it. have you or can any one tell me why it did this, or what could be the reasons for this to happen. i think that knowing that would also be very usefull. thx in adv.

  • 'Launch Bar' erased my photos and music and almost everything else!

Be wary of the application 'Launch Bar'. Downloaded a trial, launched it and then was presented with a hard drive which denied me access to all my photos, music as well as resetting Safari and deleting all my mail (in Mail app)
I could not see just how I managed to accomplish all this, but I DID!
Tried Repairing Permissions and disk, used Disk Warrior, repaired scripts..etc, etc.....all to no avail!
Get Info suggested my drive contained all my data, but, as I said, was un-accessible. Lost patience and recovered the drive from SuperDuper using my external Seagate drive.
It seemed to me something like what happened when I tried to change my HOME FOLDER NAME some years back, that was a bit of a disaster too, everything was still there, but not accessible.
Any comments, or similar experiences? Needless to say, I have deleted Launch Bar!

  • I just updated my ipod to iO5 and lost almost everything

Yes i just updated my ipod to iO5 and i regret it. all of my photos were lost as well as the data that was saved in my apps. i still have my music and apps, but no data in the apps. i kinda did the latest backup thing but it didnt work. im freaking out, please help!! apple better fix this, all of my memories were lost D=

Did you fail to import your pics before updating?  That is not good.  you should be importing all pics taken with ipod regularly as you would with any digital camera, especially before any update.

  • Ipod photo won't turn off

I can't turn it off. The backlight will go out, then as soon as I lift my finger, it lights up again. I imagine it will turn off when the battery dies, but I'd like to figure this out. I can't reset because I can't turn it off.

    Welcome to Apple Discssions!
Why do you need to reset it when it is off?
    Try resetting it...
    Resetting iPod
Then when it comes back on wait about a minute. Then try turning it off.
