Ipod playback

I'm sure this has been asked before but does anyone hear a difference between 128kbps and 256kbps imported songs. Mine all imported at 256kbps and was wondering if I should delete them all and redo at 128kbps to have more room for the rest of my cd's.

Why don't you rip a familiar track or two from CD in each of the bit rates and have a listen for yourself? Different people have different tolerances to compressed music, what someone else can hear and what suits them may be very different from what suits you. If you want to read something about the available formats have a look at this article, you'll get an extensive comparison of the AAC and MP3 formats and bit rates benchmarked against CD format: Planet of Sound - Quality of AAC audio and MP3

  • Plantronics Voyager 855 unable to lower volume during iPod playback

    I wasn't sure if this should be in 3GS or music and video, so I figured I would pick one.
    I have a 3GS 32gb running version 3.1. The problem I have is during iPod playback. My Voyager 855 locks the volume slider on the phone at half way. Using the volume control ON THE HEADSET, I can increase the volume and see the volume slider on the phone increase correspondingly up to the point that the music is very loud. But, when I try to turn the music down, again using the volume controls ON THE HEADSET, the slider on the phone will only go down to the halfway point. I can continue to click the volume down button ON THE HEADSET and the button will beep along with a split second decrease in volume but as soon as the button is released the volume has not changed-it remains at the halfway point. I have this problem with watching youtube videos, everything, EXCEPT for on the rainfall app that I have. I can increase/decrease the volume all the way up or down to the point that I can no longer hear the rain or until it is so loud it hurts my ears. This is very frustrating as I would really like to use this headset while reading and for sleeping, but the iPod function is just too loud. My friend has a 3G 8gb with the exact same headset and he does not have this problem. Is this a feature/limitation of the 3GS?

    Yeah, ha ha, that is my post to Plantronics and their reply to me. I tried what you suggested and no go:
    Un pairing, rebooting, and re pairing did not result in a fix. I still have the same problem. I tried it on my wifes phone-hers is running 3.1.3, and no-go, it had the same problem.
    The volume slider works when the music is not outputed through the headset. When through the iPhone speaker, it works as it should-the volume is able to be adjusted up and down via the slider. Videos behave as they should, any program that needs to be adjusted via the volume slider or the rocker button on the side of the phone works as it should. To expand on what I stated eariler: while using the iPod function I can set the slider all the way to the left (volume 0), press the option for output and set it to the headset. When I do that, there is a split second where you can see the slider move from the left to the middle, and then the slider disappears. It's almost as though the headset is resetting the default/baseline sound level from 0 to 50 (if we are working on a 0-100 scale). I can increase the volume using the buttons on the headset, and I can lower the volume only to half way. If I then select the option for sound output and change it back to speaker, the slider reappears, and it is all the way to the left where I originally set it. This is very frustrating. I can understand Plantronics response. but they are wrong. I can control the loudness of music via the iPod application. I guess maybe this is just a hiccup I will have to deal with. I have placed a request to Apple that they fix this. Maybe in the next upgrade they will, or at least add an option where you can adjust it in the settings.

  • IPod Playback on iPhone Has Unwanted Echo/Reverb

    All iPod playback has annoying echo/reverb sound. Is this a software issue or maybe a back earbud connector? I've tried several earbuds/headphones and the problem is the same each time. I've also tried restarting.
    It's running Version 3.0 software.

    Same problem. Echo/reverb only heard on saved podcast playback. Streaming audio/podcast is fine. Phone call sound with external speakers is fine. Same reverb heard with and without earbuds. iphone 3G with OS 3.0.1. I have tried reseting and erasing all. Same problem on recover from backup. I guess if I had the time I would reset and erase, then reinstall just OS 3.01 and retest. Maybe a conflict with one of the apps? Recent apps I've loaded include NPR News, KAYAK, reQall, Racers, and Medscape, but my kids are always loading new game apps.

  • IPod Playback Skips End Of Track When Ripping CD's In iTunes 8.1.1.10

    I have just upgraded to iTunes 8.1.1.10 and any Tracks ripped using this version have a problem playing back on my iPod. Playback within iTunes is fine however, when playing back through my 5th Gen iPod Video up to the last 20 seconds of the track are skipped. Previsously ripped CD tracks are fine and do not show the problem.
    I beleive the problem is Quicktime AGAIN. This is the third time APPLE have introduced the same bug whereby Quicktime (used for encoding the AAC files) does not write the file ending properly. Last time (around version 7.5 or 7.6) they tried to blame faulty hardware, which they then would NOT replace under warrenty etc.
    APPLE are becoming worse than Microsoft for re-applying the same old bugs. Once fixed it should stay fixed.
    Last time this happened the only fix (until APPLE re-fixed the problem) was to revert back to an older version of Quicktime. That is easier to do for Mac users, however Windows users, try finding downloads of previous versions on Apple's site(s).
    Come on APPLE - fix the damm problem properly.

    I have the same problem with my 5th Gen iPod Video. I thought I had issues with my iPod. I was worried. I will try the previous version of Qucktime. However I do have a work around. Highlight all of the songs in the CD in your iTunes Library and do a Get Info. Say yes to the multiple items qustion. In the "Options" tab at the bottom it says "Gapless album:". Make that say Yes in the box on the right of it. You can do this through iTunes directly on your iPod but, you wont have to if you do it in the Library before you drag it to your iPod.

  • IPod Playback via a car MDI connection

    When in playback mode and connected to my car audio system via a VW factory fitted Multi Device Interface, my iPod Classic has about 0.5secs of a gap at after about 0.5 secs at the start of each song. Can anyone help?

    You can update the software in your VW radio/MDI system. Go to http://www.volkswagen-zubehoer.de/eng/ and go to the bottom of the page (the Media In section).
    First is a PDF file with a radio compatibility list (http://87.230.74.92/fileadmin/pdf/media_in/MDI_Empfehlungsliste_V002.7_MGE_VWZ_e nglisch.pdf).
    Next is the file used to update your radio (you will need an adapter to your MDI cable that includes a female USB connection--into which you plug in a USB memory stick formatted for FAT16 or FAT32--I don't remember).
    Finally, there are the actual instructions: http://87.230.74.92/fileadmin/pdf/media_in/MDI_Kundenupdate_V1.1_engl_20081114_M GE.pdf
    It solved the problem with my stock RCD510 radio, though I've read on the TDIClub.com forums that the fix isn't 100% for everyone.

  • Ipod playback volume

    I use my ipod for Group Fitness classes & always play it at Max volume & then use the stereo system that I hook up to to adjust volume.
    I've noticed that the playback volume is not as loud as it used to be even though my ipod is on max & so is the stereo system.
    Is there a way to increase the volume on output when I playback?
    I also have noticed that some songs thatI purchase from iTunes may not play as loud as others.
    HELP!

    Has the *Volume limit* been set to less than maximum? You can tell this quickly by turning the volume on the *Now Playing* screen to maximum and if the speaker icon stays as a speaker, the answer is no, it isn't. But if the speaker icon changes to a padlock when you get to "maximum", then the *Volume Limit* _is set below maximum._
    On the iPod, go into *Settings/Volume Limit.* The small up-arrow under the scroll bar is the "limit setting". Turn the scroll wheel to increase the maximum and press the centre button to set it. The bar will return to a lower level. Don't worry about that - it's supposed to, the arrow is what you need to look at. +(Do not press the play button to set the volume limit unless you are going to remember the combination that you will be asked to set as well.)+
    Why/how did this happen you ask? I don't know, but as I confirmed my instructions to you (I have an iPod Touch as well, so I get confused +at my age)+ my maximum volume reduced when I came out of the menu - something I realised by turning to max on the *Now Playing* screen and seeing the padlock, which I hadn't seen before!

  • IPod playback stops frequently

    during playback with earbuds, my iPod classic stops

    I recently had this.
    I took mine into a local Apple shop after having the iPod for about 5 years. It was unfixable and something to do with the jack where the headphone slot goes in.
    As for technics i cannot comment, but after i did this ( as mine was well out of warrenty ) they basically give me 10% off a brand new one and took my old one. Might be an idea if it is an older iPod?

  • IPod Playback 'pause'

    I have a brand-new 60Gig Video iPod, and all is well except one very BIG annoyance - during album or playlist playback, the iPod will start to play a track, pause, then restart the track and play. Its as if it doesn't have enough memory to queue the track and update the track information to the screen at the same time - it can't do both smoothly, so occasionally, playback gets 'hung up' while a screen refresh takes place.
    This only occurs at the beginning of the track (when it first cues). It plays perfectly throughout the rest of the track. If the track is ever re-cued from the beginning once the track plays for a few seconds, the 'jitter' pause is gone, and the track plays from the beginning normally without the inserted 'delay' in playback. If a single track is cued and played by itself, the 'delay' is not present. This anomaly only occurs in albums and playlists where several tracks are played back-to-back.
    Its very F*%%ing annoying, for a $400 unit not to play back tracks perfectly from start to finish. Most all tracks were encoded with the latest iTunes software, utilizing Apple Lossless encoding. A track that has a 'pause' inserted at the beginning of a sequential playback sounds perfect if played 'alone', so I have no reason to believe there is an issue with iTunes, the computer used to 'rip' the track, or the track itself loaded into the iPod. I would say the culprit has to do with buffer/memory management or the onboard playback software, but I am interested in some experienced feedback with any rememdy information. Thanks....

    I had the same problem. I accidently discovered that if you turn off the EQ, the stuttering problem goes away.
    You are right. $400 is a lot of money to lay out and then have to deal with that. I should be able to have EQ on if I want. But if you can get used to hearing everything flat, the stuttering jitter does go away if you turn the EQ off.

  • IPod playback + microphone record at the same time?

    Hey,
    I'm making an app that requires music to be playing at the same time as the app is recording audio through the microphone.
    Specifically, I need a volume reading from the microphone to be calculated constantly (30 times a second or so) at the same time as music is playing through the iPod app.
    I also need to be able to set the volume of the music automatically from my code (ie not by the user using a slider)
    I am currently using MPVolumeView to set the volume and AVAudioRecorder to record the microphone volume.
    Problems with this:
    MPVolumeView only allows change of volume by user interaction (AFAIK?), not by the code setting it automatically.
    Also, iOS doesn't seem to like both running at the same time... If music isn't playing, I get a readout from AVAudioRecorder of the sound its picking up but no volume slider, if the iPod is playing, I get the MPVolumeView slider, but the microphone readout does not work.
    Please help me out?
    I know this is possible, apps like IAmTPain do both tasks simultaneously (although the volume of the playback is not automatically variated).
    Thanks for any replies! :P

    Hello!
    Try to use the cloner directly for the player. It seems that all clones need a cloneableableDataSource, which is working on a player or processor:
    DataSource cloner;
    DataSource forPlay;
    DataSource forSave;
    //...get data source from the receive stream
    dsource = stream.getDataSource();
    cloner = Manager.createCloneableDataSource( dsource );// forPlay = ((SourceCloneable)cloner).createClone();
    player = Manager.createPlayer( cloner );
    //when do recording
    forSave = ((SourceCloneable)cloner).createClone();
    Processor p = Manager.createProcessor(forSave);

  • IOS4.0: Disable Auto-dimming during iPod playback while charging?

    Hi, I use my iPhone with a dashmount holder and an audio connection to my stereo via a cassette adapter. During playback, after roughly a minute, the screen will automatically dim itself (but NOT ever autolock). This means I have to tap the screen once to 'activate it' before I can tap any of the controls. Plus, I cannot clearly see what is on the display anymore when it is dimmed.
    This was not the case with 3.0 -> 3.1.3, the screen never dimmed and never autolocked when the phone was playing and charging.
    How can I fix this?

    I also noticed this. This needs to be addressed, it's really annoying.

  • Ipod playback of multiple podcasts

    Is there a way to listen to multiple podcasts consecutively--like listening to an album or the shuffle setting for songs, but in the podcast catagory?
    Thanks

    It seems this "fix" isn't published anywhere. I found the solution by accident for my ipod classic 6G.
    Go into your ipod Settings menu and turn Shuffle "Off". When shuffle is turned off then the podcasts will play continuously.
    If you want the podcasts to stop each time the end is reached then turn Shuffle "On".
    It's a pain. I have to turn shuffle on for music and then remember to turn it off before listening to podcasts.

  • Ipod playback audio in mono

    my ipod only plays back audio in mono (another words, i only get audio in one of the earbuds.) i've tried several pairs of earbuds (that i know work fine on other devices) on the ipod in question, but only get audio in one of the ear pieces. does anyone know how to correct this?
      Windows XP

    the problem is most likely the jack itself. in which case it
    needs to be professionally repaired or replaced.
    did you buy it with this problem?
    and in that case hopefully your still under a return policy.

  • IPod playback position skips ahead after pause

    I listen to books and podcasts on my Nano. If I unplug the earbuds and then resume playback later on the position is about 15 seconds ahead of where I left off. Not good when listening to the mentioned audio files.
    Any suggestions on how to eliminate this problem are greatly appreciated!

    I listen to podcasts and audiobooks as well but I am not seeing the same issue you are reporting. Are you able to see that issue immediately if you unplug and plug back in and start playback?

  • Itunes & Ipod playback of Live Albums with out Gaps!

    Sorry this is just a user2user board - you won't find a reliable answer to those kind of questions.

  • Changed MP3s in iTunes and now I have iPod playback issues...

    I have some really bad quality MP3s, so I've been going through my iTunes library and re-ripping CDs to higher quality. I want to keep my played and skipped data, so I've been deleting the existing MP3s and telling iTunes where to find the new ones so my data stays.
    After doing this, I sync my 5th gen and the new MP3s are copied over. When I play the new MP3s on the iPod, only the MP3s that I've changed, will get to around the last minute of a song, then skip to the last second, and hang with one second left until I change the song. When I play the same songs in iTunes they play just fine from start to finish. This is ONLY happening with the MP3s that I've changed.
    I was thinking maybe it's a sync issue, so I did a restore on the iPod and still have the issue.
    As a test, in iTunes I deleted one of the albums I was having an issue with and re-imported it. After syncing my iPod, the album plays just fine without any issues.
    Is there any way I can resolve this besides removing and re-adding them to iTunes? I'd really like to keep all my played/skipped/date added data.

    John,
    In iTunes, when you manually replace the file for an existing library entry, iTunes is supposed to pick up all the tag information, etc, for the new file. However, you can get some subtle and (to me) inexplicable effects that seem to be due to iTunes retaining some partial "memory" of the old file that will then cause unexpected behavior. I have now learned to avoid it by starting a new library entry.
    As you note, this does mean losing play counts.

  • Fifth Gen 80 Gig iPod Playback Problem

    About 4 weeks ago, I bought myself a nice new 80 gig iPod, fifth gen or whatever the newest one is, and it's been excellent. But sometimes I'll be listening to it and I'll have it on "Shuffle Songs" mode and when it comes to a song(It could be any random song, so I know it's not a particular song) it will sometimes freeze up while trying to play it. I'm thinking the problem could be because I rip my songs at 320kbps, so it's pretty well the highest quality around and so most song files are 10MB and up. This problem seems to only happen when it's on shuffle, and when it does happen, I usually restart my iPod, but I noticed one time, I just pressed a bunch of buttons and a few minutes later it played the song just fine. I'm not quite sure what the problem is, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
