IPod Playlists Grayed out in iTunes

I used to be able to play my iPod songs through iTunes while connected to my computer via the USB. Not now. I'm figure I'm missing something obvious. I did re-authorize the computer because I bought a game. Songs are still grayed out. iPod plays fine on it's own. What's happening? Is this the new way it works with iTunes 7.0 ? iPod software is 1.2 / 5th generation iPod.

Is the iPod set to manually update songs and videos?
If you check any video options in the iPod preference tabs, the iPod will return to automatically updating. Make sure it is set to manual.

  • Why is the music list for my ipod classic grayed out in itunes?

why is the music list for my ipod classic grayed out in itunes?

I have a similar problem.  Originally, my iTunes advanced setting was set such that a shortcut to the song was copied into my music library so sometimes copying songs to my iPod resulted in them being grayed out.  I changed that setting some time ago and haven't had the problem until recently.
I don't know what to do.  here's the situation:
         1.  I have a song that is stored on my file system within My Documents. (it was purchased via Amazon)
         2.  Through iTunes I choose the File | Import file to library (or some text like that)
         3.  I navigate to the location of the song
         4.  I import it.
         5.  I can play the tune from the music library or from an internal PC playlist.
         6.  I then attempt to copy the song to my iPod.  When I do, it appears in the iPod's playlist grayed out.
I have done those steps countless times for dozens of songs without a problem.  Even others that I've purchased through Amazon.  What is so different this time?  I should mention that this problem NEVER happens if I buy the song through the iTunes store.  Only if I buy it from another source (e.g. Amazon).  WHY ???

  • Ipod songs 'grayed out' in Itunes and won't play

My son's Ipod will not allow him to drag any playlists into his Ipod(nano) anymore. we get the circle with the line througt it and it doesn't load. also, when i Itunes we click on his Ipod and all the songs appear on the screen but they're all grayed out and he can't click them to play them. this all started a couple days ago. I updated the Itunes and his Ipod last night but that didn't fix the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks

Grey text when you look at the content and lock symbol at the bottom of the screen simply shows that your iPod is set to automatically update. If you want to access your iPod directly, drag songs to it, play it through your iTunes, connect it to a second computer etc. you just need to change the update method to "Manually manage songs and videos" in the iPod Summary tab and click Apply. The text will change from grey to dark and the padlock will disappear: Managing content manually on iPod
One thing to be aware of with manually updating is that the iPod also has to be manually ejected before the "Do Not Disconnect" message will go away. Safely disconnect iPod

  • Ipod playlists greyed out in itunes

I am having a problem when my ipod is connected to my computer. It connects to itunes, but when I click on the ipod or playlists in the ipod everything is greyed out and I can not click on it. I am not able to drag new downloaded songs into any of my playlists either. I just get a circle with a line through it.
    Please help

    For info: iPod 101
The iPod offers three ways to transfer music from your computer. You can select one of the following update modes from the iPod Preferences menu in iTunes (Edit=>Preferences=>'iPod' tab):
    1) Automatically update all songs and playlists. This is the default mode, in which your entire music library, including playlists, is automatically synced to your iPod. If the music library on your computer exceeds the iPod storage capacity, you are prompted to select a different update method.
    2) Automatically update selected playlists only. With this option, iTunes automatically copies the playlists you have selected to the iPod when you connect it to the computer.
    3) Manually manage songs and playlists. You can also choose to transfer music to the iPod manually. This allows you to drag and drop individual songs and playlists from iTunes to the iPod.

  • IPod Touch 4th Gen - Install icon grayed out in iTunes

I bought a 4th gen iPod Touch for the kids for Christmas.  Its running iOS 6.1.5, I loaded it up w/ games for the kids a couple weeks ago with no problems but now when I buy new games through iTunes and try to transfer over via iTunes, the Install button is grayed out in iTunes.  The Remove button works just fine so I can take apps off the iPod but can't install any new ones.  I also don't have an App Store icon on the iPod Touch any more and I'm 99% sure it used to be there.  The apps that are installed still play but the kids are getting tired of the same ones and I obviously didn't pay the money for 2 weeks of use.  Any idea what's going on??

Sounds like the Restriction that prevents installing apps is set. Go to Settings>General>Restrictions and check/change. It is passcode protected.

  • Music in ipod list is grayed out in itunes?!

Hi, so basically, when I hook up my iPod to my computer, my music in the device list for that iPod is grayed out. I can't extract any music, play any music, or input any music into that iPod whatsoever.
It's been annoying me because I haven't been able to add new music to my iPod for the longest time!
Edit: To be a bit more specific, anything in my iPod is inaccessible. I don't want to sync my iPod to my computer because currently all my music in my iPod isn't on my computer at the moment, but thats another story.
    Please help!

  • Playlists grayed out/not available after iTunes transfer

I recently had Best Buy transfer our old computer files to the new computer including iTunes. I can view my playlists in iTunes but they are grayed out and I can't seem to access them or play them. I do still have my original playlists on my iPod but again, cannot access them on iTunes. Any ideas?

OK, realized I had not noticed the "downward" arrow next to the Apple TV device. It was displaying the list of playlists on the Apple TV, which of course can't be accessed on the computer and hence are grayed out. I have a long list of playlists, and just had not scrolled far enough down to get to the playlists on the computer. This is potentially confusing, Apple should differentiate these lists a little better.

  • ITunes transferred playlists grayed out and not working

OK so I've transferred my old iTunes files from the old computer to the new one. iTunes is now correctly displaying all of my playlists however they are grayed out and I can't access any of the songs. Anyone know why?

I found the answer here:  https://discussions.apple.com/message/15129510#15129510
"Is your computer authorized: Store>Authorize this Computer? Apps restricted in parental controls: iTunes>Preferences(under the edit menu if using Windows)>Parental? Restricted on your phone: Settings>General>Restrictions(are they on?)>Installing Apps>Off?"
Restrictions was on in my iPod.  As soon as I turned that off, every was good to go.

  • Itunes playlist Grayed out

I cannot add songs from my computer to itunes9 PLAYLIST is grayed out. The songs I have on playlist are avaiable. I have deleted Itunes several times yet with the same results. Have tried changing compatibility mode still doesn't solve problem. Have set to manual but cannot set to "open itunes when this ipod is attached also grayed out. Does anyone have a solution?

    Try posting a screenshot, GrizzBen.
If it is a blee regular playlist, you should be able to add stuff to it.
If it's a purple smart playlist, then, no....
Also, you can't just drag songs into a blue playlist folder.
You can link to screenshots from imageshack, flickr, etc.

  • Songs on iPod are grayed out and purchases in iTunes are missing

So my mom's having some trouble with iTunes-
When her 7th gen Nano is plugged into iTunes all of the songs on it are grayed out and unplayable.  There are no icons or such that suggest that there is a problem.
She has 559 songs on her iPod that she purchased and downloaded with the same Apple ID that she still uses today, however iTunes says that she only purchased 179.
This problem must have started when the computer she uses was wiped and had Windows 7 re-installed, but this shouldn't affect the data associated with her Apple ID?
Is there anyway that the songs on her iPod can be transferred to her library?  (after they're somehow ungrayed)
Any little bit of help is appreciated

With manual transfer you drag the songs from your iTunes to the iPod. That's how manual works and has nothing to do with songs being "check marked".
However, this is an extremely risky option because when (and not if) there comes a time to restore your iPod, which is a very common fix for iPod problems, then all the music would be erased. If you no longer have the music in iTunes (or any other back up), then all that music would be lost.
What if the iPod were lost/stolen/needed repair? Again, the music would lost. I strongly recommend a back up, and if computer hard drive space is in short supply, you should seriously consider an external hard drive. They are not expensive, and the cost is well worth it when compared to the loss of all your precious music.
At the very least back up your music to either cd or dvd before deleting it, particularly any purchased music/videos, as this would have to be bought again if it were lost. See this.

  • All files on new iPod are grayed out when connected and viewed in iTune 7.6

I just bought a new 80GB iPod classic. I have been able to get everything loaded and it works fine (I have to get used to the new interface but that's OK). What is odd is that when I click on "music" on the now fully loaded iPod contents list of some 1,500 songs, all of then a grayed out and I cannot do any sort of renaming/re-arranging/deletion whatsoever. No doubt this is a simple setting that I am just not hip to. It did ask me to update to iPod software 1.1.1 when I put it in and I did.
Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks
    Theo

Sounds like your iPod is in auto-sync mode, which greys out the contents and won't let you change things. That's normal since you're expected to make such changes to your iTunes library and re-sync your iPod to capture the changes.
If you want to manage the contents directly on the iPod, you need to select the option "Manually manage music and video", found on the general iPod summary when you connect to iTunes.

  • Songs are graying out in iTunes playlist for no apparent reason

Here's an odd problem . . . iTunes, on my iPad, is graying out songs. For instance, when in any playlist, if I select one of the songs, iTunes runs through the list and grays out all the songs in the list. If that playlist was an album, then selecting the album afterward brings a screen that says: "has no content", or words to that effect.
It is similar to others' posts about songs disappearing, but not exactly . . . Anyone experience this?

I've seen the same thing reported in the itunes for Windows forum as well: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1707050&tstart=0
I have the same problem after installing itunes 8. Some, not all, playlists stop playing after one track when in shuffle mode. All the boxes in front of track names are ticked, and all my playlists (so far) seem to play through when they are not in shuffle mode. I've experimented with the buggy playlists by switching back and forth between shuffled and non-shuffled mode; if I start playing in shuffled mode, click the shuffle button to play songgs in order and then click it again, the new shuffled order always puts the currently playing track last. The clickybox "Skip when shuffling" (sorry, it's probably called something else - my itunes is localised into Swedish) is not ticked, and I've restored the number of times I've played and skipped each track, several times. This has to be a bug.
I see several people posting about the same thing but so far no general answer. Apologies if I've missed something.
