Ipod playlists/podcast automatic updates

Hi,
I have subscribed to some podcasts. Is there any way that my iPod can automatically update with the episodes I have not listened to-or with each new days episodes- without me dragging and dropping each episode I want every day, and erasing the episodes I have listened to on my iPod? Can I make a 'business' playlist that when I drag and drop it into my ipod it only puts the newest shows of the podcasts that I added to the playlist?
Thanks.

Connect the iPod and select it in the SOurce list in iTunes.
Select the Podcasts tab and pick what you want.

  • IPod playlists won't update with iTunes 6

I just downloaded iTunes 6, and when I connected my iPod, it basically erased the 1,000 songs I had on it and "updated" my playlist/iPod with a random 450 songs. I got an error message saying that not all of my playlists could be updated because my software is too old. But I have the newest software...help is greatly appreciated!!

    hi Cathleen!
    The updater is 2004-04-28.
Kathy's giving you good advice. there's a few extra details on how to go about updating your ipod software given in here:

  • How to change the direction of play on an ipod playlist/podcast

I play a lot of Podcasts on my Classic Ipod 160, and something that's bothered me for ages.
If I have a particular podcast with more that 1 episode on it to play, I will usually want to play them in order from oldest to newest.
However, the ipod only wants to play from the top of the list to the bottom, the top being the newest episode, the bottom being the oldest.
So, I end up having to scroll down to the bottom, play the episodes one at a time, and manually move my choice of episode to the next newest after the episode I was listening to finished.
When I got my first ipod, a looooonnnnnggggg time ago, you could start playing a particular podcast at the oldest episode, and the ipod would just move on to the next newest episode in a podcast automatically.
Then, at some point, at some particular ipod software upgrade, or itunes upgrade, The ipod stopped functioning the way I wanted it to, and I had to go about playing them the awkward way. That was about 2 ipods ago.
Now, my current Ipod, on 1 particular podcast, is allowing me to play the podcast episode list in the old way that I want, where I just select the oldest episode, and I can just let it play on its own, and the list will move on to the next newest episode on its own.
This makes me think that there may be someway of controlling the directionality of play on a podcast episode list.

    Hi Frank,
this is not easy to talk with words. First, since your antennas are articulated, you can achieve any coverage without moving the AP itself.
The coverage patterns seen here :
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/antenna/installation/guide/5135dw.html
can be identified like this :
Place the ap on a desk. Cisco logo facing upwards (ceiling)
Antennas are straight up (like they would be if they were not articulated). The antennas pointing like fingers to the ceilign.
Then you have the coverage seen on the diagrams of the link I pasted.
H-view is a top view (you are viewing the AP from the ceiling on your desk). You can see it's radiating in all horizontal direcitons.
E-view is a side view (you are sitting on your chair looking at the AP at the same heigh as it) : You can see it's radiating left and right but not so much up and down of the AP.
So this is a "floor" coverage.
If you want a coverage "above and below" the AP then you should articulate the antennas to be parrallel to the AP (pointing the wall then). Direction will nto matter.
I hope it's clear. I'm sorry I'm not using your diagrams as reference as I didn't really understand their significations as it's hard to view this kidn of stuff without 3d view :-)

  • Won't sync play counts from iPod and IS automatically updating

Well, the subject pretty much says it all...for some reason when I connect my iPod it won't sync the play counts. Searching for other posts on this I see that you have to be set to automatically sync everything but it IS doing that (meaning, not having "manually manage music and videos" checked and having "sync music" and "all songs and playlists" checked, yes?). So when I connect it, it syncs and seems to do everything it should be doing except the play counts. I use Last.fm so this is really bugging me! What should I do? Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Ipod automatic update

My ipod no longer automatically updates from i-tunes when I connect it. I have to highlight and drag over any new music I want to put on the ipod. Anyone know how to get it to automatically update again ?

If you are using iTunes from version 7 onwards, then when you connect the iPod the summary screen should automatically open.
If you click on the 'music' tab, you will see the options to "sync music" with "all songs and playlists".
Is that what you are looking for?

  • I deleted all my playlists selected for updating!!!

There is no music on my ipod and I can't figure out how to get the stuff from my library onto my ipod. I deleted all my original playlists thinking I was saving room. I know i'm an idiot. How do I get the music on there!! Help!!!

    Open iTunes prefs -> iPod.
Select Automatically update all songs and playlists.

  • IPOD playlists

i added playlists to my ipod nano but when i renamed them and tried to update an error message came up and said "the playlists selected for updating no longer exist". the playlists are in itunes but were deleted from my ipod. what happened??

Is your iPod set to "automatically update selected playlists only" If so renaming them will have changed your selection criteria. Connect your iPod and go to Edit>Preferences>iPod and in the selection window choose your renamed playlists.

  • Ipod playlists greyed out in itunes

I am having a problem when my ipod is connected to my computer. It connects to itunes, but when I click on the ipod or playlists in the ipod everything is greyed out and I can not click on it. I am not able to drag new downloaded songs into any of my playlists either. I just get a circle with a line through it.
    Please help

Grey text when you look at the content and lock symbol at the bottom of the screen simply shows that your iPod is set to "automatically update songs and playlists". . If you want to access your iPod directly, play it through your iTunes, connect it to a second computer etc. you just need to change the update method to "Manually manage songs and Playlists" in the iPod preferences. Managing Your Songs Manually
One thing to remember about manually updating though is that the iPod also has to be manually ejected before the "Do Not Disconnect" message will go away. Safely disconnect iPod
    For info: iPod 101
The iPod offers three ways to transfer music from your computer. You can select one of the following update modes from the iPod Preferences menu in iTunes (Edit=>Preferences=>'iPod' tab):
    1) Automatically update all songs and playlists. This is the default mode, in which your entire music library, including playlists, is automatically synced to your iPod. If the music library on your computer exceeds the iPod storage capacity, you are prompted to select a different update method.
    2) Automatically update selected playlists only. With this option, iTunes automatically copies the playlists you have selected to the iPod when you connect it to the computer.
    3) Manually manage songs and playlists. You can also choose to transfer music to the iPod manually. This allows you to drag and drop individual songs and playlists from iTunes to the iPod.

  • Automatic update problems

my friend had her ipod set on automatic update and some how she was still able to get music from my computer and put it on her ipod, well she had to get a new ipod because her other one had a hard drive issue. now that she has this new ipod it is on automatic update still but it wont let her take music from my comp like it did last time. is there some type of setting that im missing, its possible because it happened last time ( i didnt think it was possible) but now it just wont work, any suggestions please tell me

It's not possible to have an iPod on auto synch for more than one computer; she would need to put her iPod on manual update to get music off of your computer to her iPod.

  • Automatically update iPod after podcasts download?

I'd like iTunes to automatically update my iPod after all my podcasts have downloaded. Is this possible, or do I always have to manually update the iPod after downloading podcasts?
Ideally, I'd like to be able to plug in the iPod in the morning, walk away to brush my teeth and shower, then come back and grab the iPod with all my podcasts ready to go.

I agree, it drives me nuts and is an iTunes design flaw IMHO. If there are any podcasts being downloaded the iTunes should hold off doing the iPod syncing until all the podcasts have finished downloading. This way the problem would not occur.

  • Updating sync-ing my iPod playlists

Hi, I recently brought a iPod Video 60GB and I have read the manual and the iPod 101 on the website but I'm unclear on how transferring tunes to my iPod really works. When I got the iPod I decided to allow the iPod to update everything automatically - which is great and it copied everything I wanted. Since then I have created playlists, some are just those I created to burn discs which I didn't want on the iPod. So I changed the settings so that it would only update with certain playlists. Now after I downloaded some podcasts I right clicked and updated my iPod and it froze and crashed iTunes. When I opened it up again I lost over 3500 songs and was left with just 800 songs. I tried disconnecting and reconnecting the iPod but that didn't work. So I restarted it and had to copy all the 3500 songs again!!!!
Now what I can't understand is did I lose these songs because I decided to only update the iPod with certain playlists (and by doing so it only adds the songs from the playlists only???) or was it because something happened to crash iTunes and in turn screwed up the tunes on the iPod?
Also in order to avoid this is there a way I can get everything in the Library on the iPod but only keep the playlists I want? This seems like such a stupid question!!! I thought this was clear but I'm confused!
Any guidence or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

If I just select the option to only sync with certain
playlists it will only put the songs in the playlists
and exclude everything else in my library?
Correct. If you import 1 or 100 songs, they go into your iTunes library. With the exception of Smart Playlists, you will have to add the song(s) to a playlist that is set to sync with your iPod, before those songs will transfer to your iPod.
Could this be the reason I lost the 3500 tracks? Not
because iTunes screwed up but I did?
It isn't necessarily any screw up, just that you weren't aware of what you had told iTunes to do with the music on your iPod. You originally had it set up to sync everything, so your entire library was on the iPod. When you changed to syncing only certain playlists, the songs that were on the iPod that were not in those specific playlists were removed from your iPod.
So in order to make sure I have all the items in my
Library I could create a smart playlist that includes
everything? This way I don't have to have the other
playlists like ones I have created for burning
    discs...?
If you've already burned the discs, it would be easiest to just delete those specific playlists from iTunes and go back to automatically updating. Or possibly a smart playlist which is set to "Date Added is after 01/01/02" (some date after the oldest date you had added music).

  • Selection "Automatically update selected podcasts only" disabled in iTunes

I would like to manually select the podcasts updated to my iPod Mini. For some reason the option "Automatically update selected podcasts only" is not available in my iTunes 6.0.4. The option is disabled/grayed and the list of podcasts below it is empty.
What could be the reason for that kind of behaviour?
      Windows XP

The Podcasts tab in iPod preferences only applies to podcasts you've downloaded via iTunes. Podcasts in your library are considered music even when the Genre is set to "Podcast".
To automatically transfer those files to you iPod, create a (smart) playlist with just the podcasts and choose "Automatically update selected playlists only" from the Music tab in iPod preferences.

  • ITunes says updating files on my iPod, but podcasts do not show up.

I have an iPod Classic 80g. It is set to manually manage files and disk use is enabled. Recently I had to reformat my PC and reinstall the OS and other programs. Prior to this I was able to click and drag the video podcast I subscribe to directly to my iPod. Now, after the reformat, when I drag the new podcasts to my iPod, iTunes says its updating files my files, but when its finished there are no files added to my iPod. When I try to add it again, it no longer says it's updating, but still nothing happens. I have checked in all available folders incase it was adding to the wrong place, but it is nowhere to be found except fot being temporarily in the recently added folded. All other media types like movies and music import without a problem to my iPod.
    Please help.

I found this answer on http://forums.ilounge.com/archive/index.php/t-197870.html
I tried it and it worked. I am not tech savy, but I am in the process of downloading all of the other shows this way. Once I entered in the url in the "sync podcasts", it then allowed me to place all of the newly downloaded podcasts under podcasts. I played around for a while, so not sure I can walk you through it, but it will work.
Once I had synced the podcast, I went into podcast, dbl clicked on the original subscribed podcast show, that brought up the other shows and I downloaded them, one by one. Am trying a mass download, but cannot seem to do that.
    Hope this helps.

Yeah, you have to subscribe to a podcast and select "Sync podcasts" for it to show up under "Podcasts" on the iPod. Even podcasts downloaded through iTunes won't show up here if you don't subscribe/sync but just put them in a playlist.

  • "Songs on the iPod "____" cannot be updated because all of the playlists...

"Songs on the iPod "Harold Kim's iPod" cannot be updated because all of the playlists selected for updating no longer exist."
Im not sure what this means or how to fix it. any sort of advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

You get this problem when the option 'Sync Music - Selected playlists' is being used to sync your iPod. If the playlist selected is deleted from iTunes the iPod no longer has a location to sync from and you get an error. (Syncing selected playlists by the way is a useful setting to use when the iPod is smaller than the iTunes library). However you can make a new one or make use of an existing one.
Open iTunes and create a playlist to update your iPod from, call it -My iPod for example (the dash will position it at the top of the playlists in Sources). You can make it a smart playlist that picks the songs for you or just a normal one and drag whatever content you want to have into the playlist. If you are making a smart playlist limit it to just less than the size of your iPod (for example 3700MB for a 4G iPod Nano. Now connect your iPod and when it appears in the Source list click on the iPod icon to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. Go to the Music tab and choose Sync Music and the Selected playlists radio button. Choose the playlist you just made from the selection and click Apply. You can also sync from any existing playlists by choosing the same setting, you just need to make sure that the size of the playlists don't exceed the capacity of your iPod:
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
    Syncing Music to iPod
To make a random playlist go to File>New Smart Playlist.
    Uncheck "Match the following rule"
Check "Limit to" put "3700" in the number box, choose "MB" from the first list box, choose "Random" from the next list box. Check "Live Updating"
When you want to change the selection in the smart playlist just delete everything in it and it will add a new selection. When you want to change the normal playlist just delete out what you don't want and drag in a new selection.
Syncing selected playlists is just like syncing your whole library only on a smaller scale and more "selectively". When your iPod is is set to sync selected playlists it automatically picks up any changes you made to that playlist in iTunes since you last connected. Anything you added to the playlist will be added to the iPod, anything you deleted from it will be deleted from the iPod. In other words the iTunes playlist and the iPod are kept "in sync".

  • IPod Nano Won't update, says playlists no longer exist,

I am really getting frustrated with my iPod nano. First it started off by not updating songs. Then it started to erase songs when i connected it to itunes. So i erased everything hoping that would fix it. But now when I try to put them back on the computer says iPod update complete but there are no songs. It also say that the iPod can't be updated because the playlists no longer exist.
If anyone knows how to fix this problem please respond as soon as possible.
    Thanks

Ok, first try a restore. Next, on the playlist issue...
Did you delete the playlists from iTunes? If so, then the iPod is trying to automatically update, but it can't, since the playlists no longer exist. Try putting your iPod into manually update; you can find that in the iPod Options tab.
