IPod plays great but songs don't appear in iTunes

I originally set up my 4th-gen iPod to synch with iTunes on my PC. Made a brief switch to a Mac laptop running OSX 10.4.11 -- reformatted the iPod, transferred the songs from one iTunes to the other. Alas, that experiment is coming to an end and I decided to reformat to the PC. Weirdly, the iPod absorbed the entire library on my PC -- I thought reformatting the device wiped it clean. But the songs don't show up in iTunes under my player although they do in the library -- that is, I can see the titles, but they're grayed out, I can't select them, and I can't add anything to the iPod from the iTunes library. Just for grins, I plugged the iPod back into my Mac, and the songs are also grayed out. I'm lost in the Twilight Zone. Any suggestions?

The songs are "greyed out" because you have the iPod set to transfer songs automatically. That is also why the padlock icon appears at the bottom of iTunes next to the space used/available.
If you want the songs to be bold and selectable/editable, then you need to change to manage the content manually.
Please note that by editing/changing the songs on your iPod in this manner, the changes will not affect the songs in iTunes, only on your iPod.

  • ITunes says my iPod is synced but songs are not appearing.

I had to start all over with my iPod because all of my files were erased. I downloaded a bunch of new songs and videos and when I sync my iPod, a message appears saying that three of the files cannot be copied. I used to get that before too, so no big deal. But when I look on my iPod, the songs are not there. It is not telling me that it cannot be synced and the bar at the bottom of the preferences page or w/e says that I have 1.60 GB of music, 795.1 MB of video, and 25.42 MB of 'other'. I have already authorized this computer. Why won't it sync properly?

iTunes can "sync" an iPod, and not transfer any songs.  You may need to set up or update automatic syncing in iTunes for the iPod.  Otherwise, syncing may sync nothing.
First, if the iTunes sidebar (along left side of window) is hidden, from the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.  When connected, the iPod appears in the sidebar, under DEVICES.
Second, when you set up automatic syncing, the iPod's existing content is replaced.  Any songs on the iPod that are not in your iTunes library will be lost.  Is that OK?  If that's a problem, please post back.
Select the iPod in the iTunes sidebar.  To the right, the iPod's Summary screen is shown.  Toward the top, there is a bar of buttons starting with Summary.  Click on Music next to Summary.  This Music screen is where you tell iTunes how to sync songs to the iPod.
Check the box for Sync Music.  This setting enables automatic syncing.  If your iTunes music library can fit on the iPod, you can choose to sync Entire music library.  Then, "everything" (that is music) syncs to the iPod when you click Apply.  Going forward, any changes to the music library sync automatically to the iPod, at the next opportunity.
Otherwise, you can choose to sync Selected playlist, artists, albums, and genres.  Then, select (checkmark) what you want on the iPod from the lists below.  For example, you can have playlists in your iTunes library with songs you want on the iPod.  On the iPod's Music screen, select those playlists under Playlists.  When you click Apply, the songs in your selections sync to the iPod.  Going forward, to update your iPod, update those playlists in your iTunes library (add/remove songs).  The iPod does not need to be connected.  The next time the iPod is connected (or when you click Sync if already connected), iTunes updates the iPod with the same changes automatically.

  • ITunes adds to library but songs don't appear in music list

    Hello
I have a freak album which stubornly refuses to appear in my main music window. I have downloaded it three times from my Society of Sound subscirption in Apple Lossless format and the same thing happens each time:
    - When I drag the album, the green + appears as I hover over the Music Library, so copying should take place
    - However when I then look for the music by typing the keyword (Winston), it shows no results as per the first picture below
    - However, if I look up my 'Lossless' playlist, the album shows up OK (second picture). If I then reveal the file in the finder, it is in the correct place, etc.
    - So in summary iTunes copies the song but then refuses to display it nornally. I have restarted iTunes, without success.
    Thoughts?
I run iTunes 10.7 with Music Match under Mountain Lion, everything else seems to work perfectly normally

There's many posts reporting serious delay of items appearing in your music library when running Match.  Some have complained that when I told them to wait a few hours it still didn't appear, only to have it appear the next morning.

  • Apps: download them but they don't appear in iTunes

    hi guys,
when I donwload an app via itunes i see it dowloading into a "download" temporary folder right below the "itunes store" tab on the left of the itunes. Apps stay there for a while then disappear and i can't even find them in the apps tab of itunes.
And still, when i check my hard disk i can see them in a folder called "mobile apps" into my "itunes" folder.
I want to download apps from itunes instead from iphone. I download them but I just can't find them on itunes once downloaded.
    What's wrong with all that?
    I have an iphone 3g, 2.2.1 fw
    thank you for your help.

I see a large number of messages about iPhone apps "crashing" and authorization issues. I was frustrated for many months about some, many or most apps "crashing" at startup after installing new apps. In my case "crash" means that the initial screen of the app would briefly appear and then the iPhone would revert to the original screen shown before the app was started.
Newly downloaded apps would always work. You could remove any app then download it again and it would work. At some latter time you might sync with iTunes and after that many apps would start "crashing" again.
    What a frustrating experiance!
BTW, my computer runs WindowsXP, I think that not using a Mac is likely to be a key part of people's issues!
So, the summary of the issue is:
Download a new app on your iPhone. Sync with iTunes on your Windows system. Look at the list of applications iTunes is aware of. Note if iTunes does not have a complete list. Over time note how apps not on the list start to "crash" on startup.
I've finally found a solution that appears to resolve my app crash issues:
Sync your iPhone to iTunes. Deautorize and reauthorize your computer. Note how the iTune applications list has added more items including your most recent App Store downloads. Sync your iPhone again using the button on the iTunes Applicaiton screen. Enjoy the fact that your apps on your iPhone now all run OK. Remember to deauthorize and reauthoirze your computer when you sync after you install more apps on your iPhone.
The apporach above has changed my experiance from frequent frustation to no more issues.
Not sure if it matters but I've yet to add any actual music on my iPhone. I do have some podcasts. Perhaps if I had music that needed authorization that would change things. Also, I have no apps which cost money. Again, if I had for fee apps maybe that would change the situation.
It seems like there are a lot of folks having app "crash" issues. The Digital Rights Management authorization seems to be in the middle of the issues. My guess is that iTunes on Windows with iPhone does not get quite the same attention as on Mac. These issues seem to cause many folks to be frustrated. Suggested solutions include a complete system reset which allows the iPhone to "work correctly for a few months".
As far as I can tell latest updates of all SW involved still show the issue. If it really has been resolved or it's somehow my user stupidity my appologies for wasting other's time.
Since I've found a solution that's not too painful I'm happy. However, Apple may want to improve the user experiance for the masses.

  • IPod is showing duplicates of songs, but songs are not duplicated in iTunes.

iPod touch is showing duplicates of songs, but songs are not duplicated in iTunes... any ideas how to fix? Tried resyncing, didn't work.

I'm fishing slightly but you may have casing inconsistenices in artist or album names that cause the iOS firmware to see more than one instance of the album but with each getting all the tracks. Merging stuff in iTunes via sort fields may also have unintended consequenses on the device. Could you post back a screenshot or decribe the symptoms more fully, ie. exactly which menu screen you are in on the iPod, what is repeated etc. The songs menu for example can correctly list more than one copy of a song if it appears on different albums.

The update of web page iCloud is great, but why don't u just remove the "Notes" label from the "Mail" app?
In additional, I also would like to see a "iOS liked" way to edit my "United contact" on the web page iCloud, just like on my iphone. That would be really great and more greater!
    Anyway, thanks for your work!

It's difficult to tell exactly what you mean, or where you are looking.
But if you're looking in the App Store on the iPad, in the Updates area, and you still see the icons, they presumably now say "Open" to the right instead of "Update".  They will stay that way as a history of what you have done.  They will disappear after a while - something like 30 days.  That is fine.

  • Playlists don't appear in iTunes

I got a new computer, I installed itunes, connected my ipod but my play lists from my ipod don't appear in itunes? How do I fix that? Everything I see has me sync the itunes to the ipod (thereby eleminating my playlists) but not the other way around.  How do I fix that?

Well this didn't work.  I get to step #10 and there is just the words "home Share" and nothing listed below it, no arrow to click.  I'm assuming neither computer is recognizing each other even though they are sitting side by side and connected to the same wifi connection.  I'm literally about to throw everything in the trash!!!

  • Audiobooks don't appear in itunes

    Hey
The audiobooks I put on my Ipod don't appear on Itunes in the Ipod (they do appear in the library).
Any idea on how this can be fixed? I need to delete some!

In order to see Audiobooks on the Touch you have to click on the More... button on the bottom right after you open Music. Then you'll get a list including Audiobooks, Podcasts, etc. from which you can choose. According to the promotional video for the Touch, you can replace one of the standard icons in Music, e.g., Songs, with Audiobooks or Podcasts so you don't have to click on the More... icon to get to the list.

  • Address Book ulContacts don't appear in iTunes

I just went to sync my original iPhone via iTunes and just discovered that my address book contacts don't appear in iTunes. My address book is fine and all of my groups appear. Anyone have any helpful hints to get them to reappear?

I have a similar issue.  There are hundreds of podcasts on my Ipod Touch that I would like to delete.  However, they don't show up on the computer.   2 questions:
    1.  You say to delete them from the Ipod.  Please explain how.  If they have to be deleted individually it will proabably take a lot of time.
    2.  Why does this happen?  How can I prevent this from happening again?
Sure wish Apple would give us more help with this.
    Thank you.

Yes you can drag and drop music to the iPiod if you select Manually Manage Music and Videos in  iTunes.
