IPod problem - firmware update error. Disk write error.

I need your help! I’me just bought a new iPod 60 GB photo (with color display) but when I connected it for the first time to my PC (with Windows XP Home Edition SP 2) using USB 2.0 I got the message: ”iPod not readable. This iPod needs to be reformatted for use on your PC”. Of course I decided to do that. The system had launched iPod updater. It asked me if I wanted to update or restore iPod’s software however the operation “update” was inactive (grey). So I choosed “restore”. Then a new window appeared: “Firmware update error. Disk write error”. On the iPod’s display a normal menu was replaced by exclamation mark. I tried to reset iPod, updated iTunes and iPod’s updater to the newest version and… nothing. It still doesn’t work. A folder with „!” mark comes up. I try to restore once again and it says: „Firmware update error. Disk write error”.
Please help! What should I do to solve my problem? I want to add that my iPod is properly recognized by the computer system.
Unfortunately, it’s rather impossible to give back my iPod to the store. It was bought in the U.S.A. and I live in Poland.

b “Firmware Update Failure” Possible Solution
-- Disconnect the iPod
-- Right click on "My Computer"
-- Select "Manage"
-- Select "Device Manager"
-- Expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers"
-- Right click on "Enhanced PCI to USB Host controller"
-- Click on "Disable"
-- Click "OK" to accept changes
Run the Updater software (Start==>Run==>iPod) and wait till it says to "Plug in an iPod to update it"
Plug in the iPod and wait (for a long while). It takes awhile because you are now running at USB 1.1 speeds. When it finally shows up, do the "update" or "restore", which ever you were trying to do.
You can try to re-enable the "Enhanced PCI TO USB Host controller" after you are done running the Updater software and try to copy your songs and pictures to the iPod. This may or may not work. If not, revert back to USB1.1.

  • Firmware Update Error/Unable to Format/ HELP PLEASE!

I have happily been using three 3G ipods with Windows XP via firewire for 9 months or so until recently....
    1. Installed 250GB external USB HD to house music and lost previous library files in the process.
    2. On connecting my 40GB ipod, got request to update and then "Firmware update failure-Disk write error" and the dreaded Exclamation mark folder.
    3. Returned ipod to Apple Service and bought new 60GB Colour ipod the day before going abroard for a month. This works OK although seems slow to be recognised by itunes and update.
    4. Got home today and plugged in my Son's 20GB 3G and got the same problems as above. Tried formatting as suggested in these pages but get "Unable to complete format" message.
    5. Apple due to deliver my repaired/replaced 40GB tomorrow - am I likely to get the same problems, and again if I plug in my Daughter's 20GB. It seems unlikely to get 2 faulty ipods within a month with the same symptoms.
Any ideas anyone? I've reset, attempted updates and formats umpteen times and have itunes 4.9 and the latest updater. New 60GB seems OK. Many thanks, Nick.

I will post the results of my disk verification here and ask if it is possible to repair using the 'fsck' alternative. If not, I will attempt to track down my install disc and attempt to repair from there. Thank you both for your help!

  • Getting firmware update error. disk write error message

i installed the lastest ipod shuffle update and when I try to restore ipod shuffle I get the error message "firmware update error. disk write error" have no idea what to do. ipod does not show up in itunes

ok, someone else with similiar problem, I just opened the box 5 days ago, installed iTunes (the June 2005 version) that came on CD with it, ran iTunes, downloaded some music, plugged in Shuffle, goto download, fails, no device found, can see it under XP ok, goto apple.com to find support FAQ, I then ran up Ipod Updater, thinking that since it was new, firmware must be recent (little did I know ) so I thought do the Restore straight off, it started, then failed with the "disk write error" and havent been able to talk with iPod Updater since, then tried installing iPodUpdater to another PC, no luck, then downloaded later versions of iTunes and uPdater, installed on a 3rd PC, same deal, unable to communicate to Shuffle, rang phone support, spoken to two different support people, finally they agree its faulty (something I figured out 4 days ago) and suggest I return it to Apple for replacement, and fill out a Service Request form, which opened a can of new worms, like there is no "Warranty Replacement" option, lots of questions like Credit Card details and nowhere to actually define that I have a "faulty" or "dead" or Shuffle to return and they obviously did not read the comments, that were requested, as they simply sent docking station in the mail, so now back to square one, trying to lodge a Service Request to "replace" a brand new, dead shuffle. Not having a nice iPod experience here !!, but Itunes is good, although expecting it will take a couple weeks all up before I get a working Shuffle to actually download to. Tried again phone support, to sort out this mess, waited in queue, then line goes dead. Oh Well ... I blame my daughter for this heartache, she insisted on having an iPod.

  • NSS6000 "Firmware Update Error: The firmware image file is corrupt."

    Hello All,
I've recently run into a problem trying to update the firmware on our NSS6000 to either 1.20.1 or 1.21.0.  We are currently running 1.16-3.
Each time after I click "Upgrade Firmware", the upgrade fails with the same error:  "Firmware Update Error: The firmware image file is corrupt.  Obtain another copy of the file and try the firmware upgrade again".
I've tried re-downloading the NSS6000_FW_1.20.1.tar.gz and NSS6000_FW_1.21.0.tar.gz several times from multiple PCs, and using multiple browsers.  I've tried several combinations of Windows Server 2003R2, Windows Server 2008R2, Windows 7, and Firefox, Chrome, and IE 8/9.
The downloads all appear to be fine, and they all can open/extract with 7-zip without issue.  The file sizes are always the same.
No combination of OS/Browser yields a different result on the upgrade attempt either.
I tried renaming NSS6000_FW_1.21.0.tar.gz to NSS6000_fwupgrade_0121.tar.gz to match the convention used in early versions (thinking that the extra "."'s could be the issue) but no luck either.
I was able to successfully re-apply the NSS6000_fwupgrade_0116.tar.gz firmware without any issues at all.
A strange thing I noticed, though, was on the "The system will reboot now. Please close your browser." window, it shows the device as an "NSS2000 2-Bay Gigabit Network Storage System" (please see attached screenshot).  I'm chalking that up to a simple reusing-the-same-web-code issue rather than the root of the problem, but thought I should mention that as well.
Has anyone else run into this issue, or have any suggestions for workarounds in order to successfully upgrade the FW on this device?  Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    Hi,
Not sure what is going on i haven't see the issue you are having, can you try downloading both images at a different location; instead of behind your router. Also upgrade to .20 and then .21. Im pasting the release notes upgrades step.
When upgrading the firmware from v1.12 to v1.14, v1.12 to v1.20.1, or v1.12 to
v1.21.0 the Configuration GUI displays a "Programming images.." message
for more than 12 minutes (the time it takes to upgrade the firmware is
    usually 5 to 10 minutes).
The workaround is to wait at least 15 minutes to complete the upgrade and
then power cycle the NSS by removing the power cord. Do not try and
access the Configuration GUI during this time. (CSCsx17923) When upgrading the firmware from v1.12 to v1.14, v1.12 to v1.20.1, or v1.12 to

Nazeer

    @lalit_205
If you have a valid warranty you could go to a Lenovo service center to update the phone or flash/install (at own risk) the latest S062 update.
If you decide to flash the latest firmware->
Download and unpack the latest S062 firmware and follow the installation instructions from Message 2(refers to a different model but the driver and flashing procedure is similar. The S660 battery is removable....You do need to remove the battery to install the vcom/sp driver. Also the firmware installation is done with the battery removed in the S660 case).
I suggest to select ''Firmware Upgrade'' instead of ''Download Only''(DO NOT SELECT ''Format All + Download).
    Alternative instructions link.
    Hope this helps.
    Regards.

  • Ipod cannot be updated the disk could not be readfrom or written to

what does this mean? I don't have any disk,I'm just trying to download songs from my library to ipod and I get this message, please help

    hi mike!
    click on the link:
"Disk cannot be read from or written to" when syncing iPod or "Firmware update failure" error when updating or restoring iPod
... and it will take you to an article on possible causes of the error message you're getting, and treatments for it.

  • Ipod cannot be updated, the disk could not be read or written to

I get the above mssg when I try to sync a photo folder with 5th gen ipod. the music syncs just fine and the ipod is "seen" by the computer. i have enabled the disk.
    Any suggestions???

I get the above mssg when I try to sync a photo folder with 5th gen ipod. the music syncs just fine and the ipod is "seen" by the computer. i have enabled the disk.
    let's start with this document:
"Disk cannot be read from or written to" when syncing iPod or "Firmware update failure" error when updating or restoring iPod
given that you're getting this when you try to sync photos, perhaps start by checking on the suggestion in the "Corrupt iPod photo Cache" section of the document.

  • Firmware failure. Disk write error.

I have gotten this new iPod shuffle, and I have installed the latest itunes, however when I try to install the latest software for the iPod I get "firmware failure. disk write failure." I get the same thing when I try to restore it. I cannot get windows or iTunes to recognize the iPod. Windows views it as a mass storage device, and it is completly oblivious to iTunes. Any suggestions as to what I can do? I have tried everything 3 times or more from the support pages.
I cant seem to contact any other type of support. Every time I try to use the chat section it tells me to enter a valid serial number...
    wow.
    Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Okay, this probably isn't what people want to hear, but if you have the dreaded 'Disk Write Error' failure, it doesn't necessarily mean your iPod is hooped.
Bought my Shuffle 1G yesterday. Brought it home, installed what I needed to (very little, as mine is the second Shuffle in the house). Anticipated problems, as my father's 512M Shuffle took three days to get working properly. I found myself pleasantly surprised to find that mine worked first shot, no muss or fuss. Funk-tacular!
Or not. Thingy worked fine all last night and this morning, but fell flat on its face when I plugged it in this afternoon. It didn't freeze solid (at first), but it refused to take in any more songs, and the ones that were loaded into it seemed to be draining out of the memory like water from an uncorked bathtub -- every time I managed to get Itunes to notice my little white headache, more memory reported as empty, though Thingy still refused to take in any songs (unable to read, or some such windows nonsense). Every time I tried to restore -- regardless of the update version, of which I tried three -- I saw the error mentioned in the title.
I'll delete about five hours of experimenting, hair-pulling, swearing, failing, wall-punching, and generally despairing over my iPlop purchase. Tried all five Rs to no avail, as well as formatting through windows. Nada.
I wish I could tell you exactly why it's working now. I can't; I got lucky. I downloaded iPod update (1-10-2006) and Itunes (6), wiped the system as clean as I could of old iPod and iTunes software (uninstall, erase folders, empty Recycle Bin, basically everything short of taking Windex to the hard drive). Reinstalled the Ipod software from the CD, reinstalled and updated iTunes and iPod update, then for a lark decided to try for the fifteenth time to reinstall Thingy. Holy crap, it worked!! After a momentary freezeup and the requisite restore to fix it (a result of my yanking the stupid thing out of the port at the wrong time), Thingy is working fine.
The moral? Don't despair, it can be fixed! Try everything more than once, get the latest software, start from scratch -- right from the CD in the iPoop box -- and keeping banging your head on it as long as you can stand it. You might be surprised!

  • Trying to restore and updater reads 'disk write error'

I've been trying to restore my ipod and anytime i get the updater to recognize it a 'disk write error' message comes up and something about firmware. any ideas?
      Windows XP

    Hi,
I've tried EVERYTHING in Apple's recommendations but I still get the "can't read/write" error on Photos only, not music (which works fine). I get the error if I select iPhoto in the selection bar of the iPod prefs in iTunes. If I switch the selection bar to "photo library" it will update photos, but it does ALL modified, originals, etc and NO iPhoto albums (which I painstakingly created!) There must be a way to fix this problem and it's not on the page you guys keep sending people to!

  • Firmware update error in 2 minute old ipod

Having just received a shiny new ipod back from apple service....i plug it in and it says it needs to be restored so i do!!
Now all the restore program says is firm ware update error after a very short time and the ipod shows the folder icon
Im seriously p*ssed off cos this has come straight from apple directly!!!
Is this an ipod problem or has my computer got some form of ipod virus or anti ipod problem???
Help Please I don't want to wait another 2 weeks
    Dave

To save Mitch from alot of trouble trying to fix the error.
Go into 'My Computer', Right Click on any blank spot, Hit Properies. Click on the Hardware Tab, click the device Manager button, scroll down to Universial Serial Bus Controllers, click the plus. Do Any of them say 2.0 or Enchanced, if not, the firmware failure might be related to USB 1.1 .
If it does say Enchanced or 2.0 make sure the ipod is plugged into the back.
Firmware Failure Diskwrite Error(maybe a Update in there), is a somewhat of a general error, Can be connection issue related to how its connected, or it could be a problem with the iPods hard drive.
If still not working, time to test it on another PC(Or Mac) If you don't have one, go here:
    http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service.html
Type in your Zip Code, It will list the closest Apple Store or Authorized Apple Service Providers.

  • IPod cannot be updated "Error -48" - Please help.

I'm so frustrated. Got my brand new ipod 80gig 5G and for the fourth time in it's first week, I've got an error message and can't add any songs, files etc to it. The only way to solve it is to restore it to factory settings erasing the ipods drive. Considering I bought the 80gig model to free up my laptops start up disk memory, this whole problem makes a mockery of the ipods memory size. Do you think I should take it back to the shop or is there a proper fix to this. What is "error -48" anyway? I can't find anything out there.
nb my software is fully up to date and I've already tried the restart, reset, retry, restore protacols. Restore is the only one that works. Is the fault with my laptop perhaps?

At the moment Apple are working on a permanent solution for this so hopefully we'll see a firmware update to fix the bug soon. In the meantime their advice is to change the Time Zone settings on your Mac to Pacific Standard Time (PST), restore the iPod and then change the time setting back: iTunes for Mac reports a -48 error during iPod sync

  • Manually Manage Music Option get error The iPod cannot be updated error(-50

I am following the instructions on how to move music to a new computer. When I get to the step "Switch the iPod to manual update and enable disk use" and try to apply the 'Manually manage music' option, I get the following error: 'The iPod (my iPod) cannot be updated. An unknown error occurred (-50). I have tried moving my dock between the two USB ports on my Dell but nothing works..can someone help?

I tried some additional things and it seems to have fixed the problem.
First, I forced the iPod Service to close using the Windows task manager (control-alt-delete and then closing it). I then restored my iPod to its original factory settings using that option in iTunes.
I renamed the iPod and then set up what I wanted to sync with it. I have made a couple of changes and they have worked.
