IPod Problem w/ Connecting & Charging
Hi-
We are trying to connect an iPod 30gb Video to our computer and are having some problems. First, when the iPod isn't connected at all, it shows the 'Charged' screen. Even if we turn the iPod off, the screen will come up and just stay on. Also, when we connect it to the computer, it doesnt recognize it, either in iTunes or My Computer.
Any suggestions on what to do?
I believe I am having the same issues you had or are continuing to have. My ipod tells me 'please wait. very low battery'.. so i wait. eventually the black screen with the apple comes on, but remains for a very long time. then it begins to charge normally for maybe 5 minutes, it then shows me the battery is fully charged. yet as soon as i uplug it to use it or even try using its contents through itunes it shuts off telling me 'please wait. very low battery'. if this sounds similar to your problem please let me know what you have done to fix it, or what someone has told you to do.
thank you i am extremely frustrated.

Ipod problem: unusually hot, charging problems
I got my ipod in May (it's a 30GB), and I've never had any problems with it until now. So, today I plug my ipod to my computer, about half an hour later, I feel my ipod and it was unusually hot. The screen didn't have any icons on it. I didn't have any ipod icons on my computer either, as if it wasn't even plugged in. I unplugged it, and plugged it in again. I noticed a battery sign (smaller than the usual) with an "!" on it. Then it started heating up again.
All my music/videos are fine, the only thing that I noticed was messed up was the date and hour, also the green/red battery sign.
I charge my ipod every day, so I don't think it was ever out of battery. I have it plugged in right now, and I can see the battery icon on it.
Basically, the problem is that it's plugged in, but it's not charging properly, or something like that, and it's overheating. o.O
Anyone know what I can do about this or where I can go?
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!I believe I am having the same issues you had or are continuing to have. My ipod 4th gen doesnot charge
my ipod 4th gen doesnot charge it only shows red light for few seconds is it my ipod problem or usb charging point i have charged it to a ac adapter also but it was the same
If this shuffle is brand new, make sure the plug on the docking cable is completely inserted into shuffle's headphones jack, as shown in this document
http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3572
Otherwise, if the shuffle's power switch has been ON since the problem occurred, do this to Reset the shuffle
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1655
If you tried it on your computer's USB port and also a USB power adapter, you have probably ruled out a problem with the USB port not supplying enough power. However, be sure to try it on the computer, after shutting down (powering off) and restarting the computer, with other USB devices disconnected (except for standard keyboard/mouse if used).
Since you get at least the red light, the USB docking cable is probably OK. And if you have ruled out the USB port and USB docking cable, the likely cause is the iPod itself.
When connected to the USB port on computer, does it still appear in iTunes? If it does, you can try doing a Restore on the shuffle. The Restore button is on the shuffle's Summary screen in iTunes. -

Is there a way to connect ipod to computer to charge but NOT sync
I've recently purchased an ipod nano 4gig. I also have an apple universal dock. We've recently set up a new soundsystem in our business to run off of the ipod dock. The dock doubles as a charging station, which weneed since it will be running all day for 9 hours a day. I have a few problems.
1 - My computer will not start when I have the ipod dock connected (with the ipod in the dock). It turns on... but then stops booting up. Not until I unplug the ipod dock usb connection will the computer then start.
2 - When I then plug the USB cord back in once my computer is up and running, it goes into the "connected" mode, and can not play. not until I "eject" it through itunes. Is there a way to STOP it from going into that "connected" mode. The only reason why I have it connected is to charge it while its playing, thats it. I know I can go through the steps of opening itunes, clicking eject, then starting the ipod to play... but its a business with many staff of varing ages and technical abilities... some people simply wont "get it".
Is there anything I can do other than spend another $30 and instead of connecting the ipod dock to the computer to charge, buy a wall charger for the ipod and connect it to a power outlet instead?1 - My computer will not start when I have the ipod dock connected (with the ipod in the dock). This can happen with some Windows PCs depending on how the start up is configured.

If you had the iPod set to manage the content manually you could play the songs on the iPod through iTunes.
With the manual setting, the songs on the iPod would shown in bold type and be selectable/playable when clicking on the iPod in iTunes. The iPod would also still be receiving a charge. -

Is there any way to charge an iPod Touch while connected to another device?
I'm using an iPod Touch connected to a pico projector (which is plugged into the wall), which of course limits the time I can run a presentation to the battery life of the iPod. Is there *any way* to charge the iPod while the connection port is in use (or otherwise connect it to A/C power)? I'm looking for any and all workarounds, though connecting it to a computer as a go-between is not an option. I'm using the Microvision SHOWWX pico projector, if it makes a difference. Thanks!
Aha - this Composite video a/v cable solved my problem. Not sure why I had such difficulty finding this solution. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC748ZM/A

Ipod 4th Generation connection problem
Ok i um i just got the ipod chromatic (4th gen) for christmas, i was really excited, well after maybe a month of having the ipod and addind and removing songs from it..the ipod just doesnt connect to the computer. When i plug in my ipod to my pc i hear the start up beep but itunes doesnt show that its connected and on the ipod screen it doesnt say connected. Now the usb chord works fine because i have a wallcharger and that chord works fine on the charger. So can anyone tell me wat is the problem????
I don't use mine with Windows, but try using another USB port (directly off the computer instead of a hub, if possible).
If that doesn't work, start the "5R" process:
http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/nano4gen/
And, if you have another computer available, try connecting it to that, just to verify it's an iPod issue and not a Windows or computer problem. You don't have to sync to it, but just see if Windows / iTunes recognizes that it is connected.
Hope this helps... -
How can I resolve iPod Touch 4th gen charging and iTunes connection issue?
I have an iPod Touch 4th generation and the other day it stopped charging. When I pug it in, it appears to be receiving a minimal charge to keep it alive, but isn't restoring the battery life and doesn't show that the battery is accepting the charge. After plugging it in for a day, the battery was only partially charged to approximately 20%. I've tried several USB cables and different plug-ins to no avail.
Then I tried to connect it to the computer and iTunes doesn't recognize it. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Apple Device Manager and iTunes software, and resetting the iPod. I've also tried holding the sleep and home buttons at the same time while connecting the iPod to the computer with iTunes software open. Nothing seems to work. I have other iPods/iPhones that connect to iTunes without issue, so it is isolated event with this iPod Touch. I was hoping to restore the iPod to its original settings to see if that would do the trick, but am unable to figure out how without iTunes. Any suggestions? help! Not Charge

- Try another cable. Some 5G iPods were shipped with Lightning cable that were either initially defective or failed after short use.
- Try another charging source
- Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
- Make an appointment at the Genus Bar of an Apple store.

Okay so my Ipod Touch is connected to my computer which has charged my ipod before. Now when i plug it in, my ipod doesnt charge unless i move the charger around. Should I get a new charger, or what?
I could be the cable or it could be that the connecor in the iPod is damaged. If the iPod is the problem replacing the cable will not help. Look at the dock connector on the iPod and the contacts on the cable.

I have an 80 GB iPod Classic that has suddenly developed severe problems. I'm running iTunes on Windows 7 64 bit.
It was working fine until last night, when I connected it to iTunes to add 6 songs. (Four of these were bought on Amazon.com and 2 ripped from CD's). It accepted the songs and played them fine when connected. When I clicked the icon in iTunes to eject the iPod, it came up with the "OK to Disconnect" and progress bar as usual. However, this time the progress bar didn't start to fill in. It just sat there.
After several minutes the progress bar finally filled in and returned to the menu... but instead of displaying the cover flow on the right side as usual, it showed a gray box with "No Music."
When I tried to re-connect it to my computer, iTunes would not recognize it. My computer also wouldn't recognize it at first... after several minutes, it came up as a generic removable device. Attempting to right-click on it or eject it from Windows was unsuccessful.
The iPod itself displayed "Connected" and alternated the plug image with the spinning arrows. It never said "Synchronizing" as it usually does.
Furthermore, my computer's performance degraded severely while the iPod was plugged in. iTunes itself froze, and even my other applications (such as my web browser) would not work correctly. This all cleared up as soon as I unplugged the iPod. If I tried to initialize iTunes while the iPod was plugged in, it would not open. It opened immediately when I unplugged the iPod.
Finally, despite claiming to have no music or other contents (it had contained only my iTunes music library, which is about 26.5 GB), in Settings the iPod claimed to have only 5.3 GB of free space.
Resetting the iPod with Select/Menu made no change. I was able to put it in diagnostic mode and check the hard drive, which gave these results:
Retracts: 381
Reallocs: 0
Pending Sectors: 10
PowerOn Hours: 417
Smart/Stops: 381
Temp: Current 24c
Temp: Min 15c
Temp: Max 48c
When I put the iPod up to my ear I hear a steady, faint high-pitched sound and an occasional very faint crackling noise. When it shuts down the sound continues for a few seconds, then ends with a kind of squeaking sound.
The iPod is more than 5 years old, so I'm prepared for the probability that it's fried. But I'd like to try everything before I go ahead and spring for a new one.The iPod's hard drive probably has data corruption. That does not necessarily mean there is a hardware problem. Hard drives, including the ones in computers, can develop data corruption.
Try putting the iPod into Disk Mode
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1363
If it goes into Disk Mode, run iTunes on the computer and connect the iPod. To eliminate other potential issues, you should disconnect other USB devices (you can leave standard keyboard/mouse connected), and connect the iPod to a direct USB port on the computer.
iTunes may prompt you to do a Restore, which you should do. This will erase the iPod, re-install its software, and set it to default settings. If the problem was only data corruption, and there is no hardware problems, the iPod should have a "fresh start." You can sync it from your iTunes library.
If the iPod does not go into Disk Mode, or if doing a Restore fails, the iPod's hard drive may be faulty. -
