Ipod Randomly Pausing Songs

hi all,
Just before i went on holiday i bought the isound 2.1 sound dock system, and also updated my ipod touch to 1.1.5 update
Since then, my ipod randomly pauses songs, regardless of the screen being on / off, the lock feature being on / off, using the dock speakers, 3.5 jack speakers, or earphones
im really hoping its down to a firmware issue but i have no idea.
Any suggestions?

The iPod will pause if you pull the earbud jack out - this is a feature. Unfortunately sometimes a set of earbuds will have a jack this is just a bit loose and this will fool the iPod into pausing. Try using a different pair of buds. If the problem continues with a different set of earbuds, give Apple a call.

  • 80 gig iPod classic pauses songs randomly

So, I recently ran into a(n) annoying problem I had hooked up a aux cord to the ipod and when "locked" the ipod pauses randomly, knowing that it might be a connection problem I plugged my Bose earphones and it randomly pauses also. Any ideas?

When you are listening to your iPod it reads data into working memory and then shuts down the hard drive when the buffer is full and plays back from memory. Before the buffer is completely empty the drive starts up again to read in some more data. There's a trade off to be made in this algorithm between battery life and occasionaly running out of data and it's possible that the classic firmware leans too much towards battery life. It's probably fine on a moderatly used disc, which isn't fragmented and where every sector reads on the first attempt. As the drive gets older some sectors may need two or three passes to get a good read. If one of these sectors is called at the beginning of a read cycle then the buffer may run out of data before a successful read leading to a pause. If the same track will play again without interuption then it's proably nothing too much to worry about but if a particular track rountinely causes problems that's of more concern.
If you want to investiage the health of your iPod's hard drive read on....
    *Diagnostics Mode*
Take your iPod and place your right thumb on the centre SELECT button and your left on the top MENU button. Press down both thumbs for about 6 seconds until your iPod reboots. Immediately move your left thumb around to the rewind button |<< on the left and hold this down together with SELECT for a further 6 seconds. Your iPod should now switch into Diagnostic Boot mode. Press MENU for *Manual Test*, then select *IO > HardDrive > HDSMARTData* to reveal your stats. For comparison here are mine for my 2 year old 6th Generation Classic:
    Retracts: 889
    Reallocs: 12
    Pending Sectors: 0
    PowerOn Hours: 2202
    Start/Stops: 894
    Temp: Current 24c
    Temp: Min 10c
    Temp: Max 50c
Take a note of your results. When finished press *SELECT & MENU* for 6 seconds to reset the iPod again.
With modern disc drives sectors are no longer marked bad by a disc scan, if the SMART firmware detects a sector it has trouble accessing it will attempt to invisibly reallocate it to a spare area of the disc.
Note that I've only 12 remapped sectors and none pending. To help explain what the numbers mean here is an extract from the Wikipedia S.M.A.R.T. article:
    *Reallocated Sectors Count*
Count of reallocated sectors. When the hard drive finds a read/write/verification error, it marks this sector as "reallocated" and transfers data to a special reserved area (spare area). This process is also known as remapping, and "reallocated" sectors are called remaps. This is why, on modern hard disks, "bad blocks" cannot be found while testing the surface – all bad blocks are hidden in reallocated sectors. However, as the number of reallocated sectors increases, the read/write speed tends to decrease. The raw value normally represents a count of the number of bad sectors that have been found and remapped. Thus, the higher the attribute value, the more sectors the drive has had to reallocate.
    *Pending sector count*
Number of "unstable" sectors (waiting to be remapped, because of read errors). If an unstable sector is subsequently written or read successfully, this value is decreased and the sector is not remapped. Read errors on a sector will not remap the sector (since it might be readable later); instead, the drive firmware remembers that the sector needs to be remapped, and remaps it the next time it's written.
Large numbers of Reallocs or Pending Sectors would suggest your drive is failing and that you may need to repair or replace your iPod. Check your stats after another attempt to update your iPod. If the numbers increase that again points to hard drive failure. While it won't be good news at least you'll know it isn't some random software problem and you can decide what to do next.

  • Ipod randomly pauses for 3 or 4 seconds...

I have a 160gig Classic and it's been wonderful. Until the last update. Now it's started pausing or "cutting out" for 3 or 4 seconds randomly during songs. When I rewind the song and play the same spot, it plays fine, so it's not the songs (they all played fine before the update). It also doesn't happen during the same songs. I can play the same song (start it over) after it pauses, and it will play just fine. I'm about to pull my hair out. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    CJ

Had the same problem with my 160Gb. It only started to happen after upgrading the firmware to the latest. So I downgraded it and the problem went away. Being bored one say I was looking through my fsck logs and discovered that every-time the ipod was plugged in it had had some minor hard disk errors which fsck fixed. So I took it back to the apple store explained the problem and got a new one. This has had no problem with the new firmware, nor any strange errors in the fsck log. I think the problem with the freezing is something to do with the hard-disk, and the latest firmware somehow brings that out.

  • IPod randomly pauses

Just got a 30gb iPod video about a week ago, and it's started just randomly pausing while playing songs. Any ideas? And no, I'm not accidently pressing pause!

I got the same thing on a road trip this weekend. It mostly happened just after starting a song and it would often pause twice. I got that look from my wife like "You paid $400 for this?".

  • IPod randomly duplicating songs?

Has anyone else had this problem? My iPod (4th Gen) has been doing this for a while, I will sometimes find that it has duplicated random songs, so there will be 2 of the same song. It always happens with different songs. And it will play both, as is shown by the number of plays on each file. What's up with that?

    Tyler,
In regards to the battery, see this page:
iPod iconology or what does this picture on my iPod mean?
And see these pages for information about skipping songs. Often it has nothing to do with the iPod, but instead the music that the user puts on - bad CD ripping, illegally downloaded songs with virii in them, you name it.

And in regards to your bump post, it had been only an hour. Sometimes it can take days or weeks for someone with the right information to help you. Please be patient. The people on these boards try their hardest to help others.
I hope this helps, please post back!

could you please check if there is activity in the scrubbing window ...
... when the music pauses ? does the diamond in the progress bar continue to move or does it stop ?
also, could you please tell us more about your setup ? do you keep your iTunes library locally or e.g. on an external HD ? if the latter, is the HD connected directly to your Mac or is it hanging off e.g. an airport base station ?
lastly, what's your exact version of iTunes ? go iTunes > about iTunes. is your version 9.1.1 (11) ?

  • IPod randomly pausing

When I'm listening to music sometimes my iPod just pauses. It can happen a lot one after another, or it can be ages between pauses. My iPod is locked when this happens.
    Any ideas?

I have the very same issue, and have tried erasing, reformatting, restoring and I've tried the 5 'R's but to no avail.
I am really frustrated by this problem, so I have complained to Apple using the iPod feedback page: http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipod.html and I urge others who are experiencing the same issue to do the same.

  • I recently got a pair of KOSS headphones and now my iPod randomly pauses

...all by itself, regardless of whether or not the Hold switch is on.
It seems to "think" that the headphones are being disconnected when they aren't.
Is there any way to solve this problem or should I just go back to my old headphones?

the reason it poses is because the ipod loses connection with the head phones... and apple being curtious as they are, created a feature so that when the head phones are unplugged(or not detected) it pauses the song... it maybe that your case stops the headphones from plugging all the way in. It maybe that whatever activity you do it gets knocked out..or even a combination of both....

  • Video iPod randomly pauses by itself

    Hey all
So this is a very frustrating problem...basically, by 30 GB video iPod pauses while playing randomly when I'm walking with it in my pocket and even when I have it connected to speakers. I already tried everything possible from my end and even sent it in to Apple, but upon return it still has the same issues. Any ideas people ?

  • IPod randomly recopying songs

For the past couple of days my iPod has been acting weird. At first, it would give me a 'corrupt file' error when I plugged it into my computer via USB 2.0 (Firewire quit working on me a while ago). I reformatted my iPod and then recopied the songs, no big deal. But every time I plug my iPod in, it seems to copy about 60 songs at random back onto it, almost as though it's forgetting about those songs or deleting them. Is my harddrive failing? thanks!

I'm having the same problem as far as the re-copying of songs. It looks like if I create a new playlist that needs to be transfered to the iPod it copies the playlist and then re-copies all the songs that are in the new playlist. Makes synchronizing the iPod an extended adventure.

  • 30GB Ipod Randomly Pauses

    Hi
I Recently got the 5th gen 30gb video ipod. Absolutely love it. I am running windows XP and all of the software installed, and all of the music and videos downloaded with no problems. However since day one it has randomaly paused during whatever song is playing and during any video playback. It has gone for hours with no problems and then it will start pausing. It will do it a few times and then work with no problems for 'X' amount of time. It happens when the hold button is switched as well. There is no obvious pattern or reason for it to pause. Has anybody else had this problem, and is there anything that can be done to fix it without sending it back? Any info is greatly appriciated. Cheers

If you're using 3rd party headphones, this problem will appear. But I got a small trick to bypass this system. Just press play and than plug your headphones in. If you remove the headphones the iPod won't stop playing

  • IPod Randomly pauses music.

    Hey guys,
Some 2 years ago i bought an iPod nano 2nd generation, and it has always worked fine for me, until it recently started jumping to pause. At first it would occur once in every 15 minutes, but it has gotten worse, and now it sometimes instantly pauses when i press the play button. It is not because the hold button isn't working properly, because it does it when i just hold it in my hand, not touching anything. Has anyone got a suggestion why it does this, and how i can fix it?
    Thanks in advance,
    Frank

sorry about posting this as a reply to your question but I can't figure out how to post my own. I got an orange ipod nano (4th generation) this past christmas. I tried to turn on my ipod today and it simply showed a gray screen and whenever I try to reset it it goes back to the gray screen and beeps twice. I also tried restoring it but it did the same thing. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about this problem or how to fix it.

  • New iPod randomly skipping songs

I got a new iPod classic 120GB, replacing my old 60gb. I loaded it up with my songs and stuff, and started using it, but after a while it skipped to next song halfway through a song. This happened a few times, and once the ipod even restarted itself (after displaying a low quality 8bit colour apple logo image). I then restored my iPod, and checked for latest software, and it seemed to be better for a while, but it just skipped a song again.
I'm pretty sure all the song files are mp3, but maybe some AACs. Songs that skipped played fine other times. iPod hasn't been dropped since I got it... I guess I have to take it to an apple center for warranty... Does anyone elses new 120GB skip songs?
    Thanks
    Rodger

Iv had my 120GB Classic since early September when they came out and iv noticed that it skips on a few song s but not many, though I do tend to listen to the same small selection of music! In my experience it has skipped at the exact same point in a particular song. as someone else has said on here, i can fast search through the song past that point and it will play the rest no problem. its like there is a speciffic marker in the song that it doesn't like. Pretty stupid if you ask me!
However, it happened to a Lost Prophets album first and the only way i found round it was to re-record the album in and its worked fine since. But since then iv found more songs that do it. Its really frustrating!!!!
I might look at taking it back then as i thought it was just my music. I didn't realise anyone else was having the same problems!
    We shall see...

  • Ipod randomly pauses then resumes (seems to skip like a cd player)

I brought my 30gig ipod about 2 months ago on only recently has this problem been happening. It seems to pause for about half a second then resumes automatically, simalar to what happened to the old cd player walkmans when you shook them. My friend recently had a similar problem with his ipod mini and they said it was his hard drive but his ipod would stop playing for about 20 secs and then resume or just stop playing completely. Please help, Josh

    See if the following helps
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”

  • Ipod nano keeps randomly pausing.

Ipod nano keeps pausing mid song and it's not the headphones... I've tried different sets of headphones & even held them in so they were flush. Still keeps happening. Been listening with no issue for about 2 hours before it started happrning all of a sudden. sometimes it will play 10 second sometimes it will [lay a few minuts but it always eventually pauses itself. Any ideas?

I just received my brand new 7th Gen iPod Nano today, ordered directly from the Apple website, and I am experiencing the exact same issue. I have tried several diffent pairs of headphones and regardless, the iPod randomly pauses. I also noticed that on occasion if I press play the iPod will indicate that it is playing music however no sound comes out of the headphones. It seems pretty clear to me the headphone jack is faulty... I suppose I'll need to get on the phone and deal with the highly inconvenient process of exchanging it. Very disappointed.
