IPOD recognition

I recently got a virus on my PC which saw me having to format my hard drive and lost most of the data, including my saved songs on ITUNES. I am hence starting again from scratch with the problem that my IPOD has the library saved on it, while the itunes is empty. Because of this (i think) my itunes will not recognise my IPOD. How can i get it to recognise my IPOD? Also how can i synch the songs from my IPOD back onto my PC?

Ok, let's try one more obvious thing (that unfortunately I don't think is your problem, but let's leave no stone unturned).
1. Quit iTunes and disconnect the iPod.
2. If you have the iPodService running -- Right click task bar, select "Task Manager", click on Processes tab. If you find "iPodService.exe" in the list, select it and stop it.
3. Register Atl.dll manually. In Windows, click Start, and then click Run.
The Run dialog box appears. In the Open box, type "regsvr32 atl.dll". Hit return. Do you get a message? What does the message say?
4. Then in Windows, click Start and then click Run. Type in "cmd", hit return. In the dialog that comes up, at the prompt type in "C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe /service"
5. Run iTunes and connect the iPod back up to it.
Does it work now? If not, let me know and we'll have to get serious about this.

  • No sign of iPod recognition when plugging in Shuffle

    Hello everyone-
First off, I'm running Windows XP and the latest version of iTunes. I have an iPod Shuffle, 1 gb.
I've had this iPod about 2 months now. It has not undergone any serious conditions like getting wet. It has worked perfectly for those two months until yesterday.
Last night, while working out, my iPod decided to go out. It was not dropped or jerked around, but rather fastened to my belt securely. I assumed that it had simply died (I keep forgetting to charge it at night) so I go to my computer and put it in the dock. The charging light does not light up. I open iTunes: the iPod doesn't appear in the left toolbar. I reconnect the iPod, nothing, reconnect USB cable, nothing, try on different computers, nothing. I check Windows Explorer and My Computer: nothing. No recognition whatsoever.
The docking cable has simply been sitting in the same place as usual, subject to no events that would explain how it acts. The USB port works perfectly with a flash drive.
I then update iTunes (I've been putting it off for a long time, probably went from v6 to v7). Nothing changes.
Help? I've looked around the other threads and nothing seems to fit my case.
In summary, there is NOOOOOO recognition of the device. Zip, zilch, null. The problem is NOT the USB port, nor the USB power. The iPod has charged in this place happily until just yesterday. I am currently assuming the iPod is either FRIED, its battery is DEAD (repeated turning on-offs have yielded nothing), the USB cable is fried, or a combination of these 3.
Any more information needed, please request below. Also, is there a warranty?

I am now on my second Ipod Shuffle 2nd generation and this one has done the same thing you are talking about! The first one died because I forgot to charge it so the light was red. When i plugged it up to the dock to charge the light that usually blinks to recognize it's charging did not come on. There was no activity on my computer either. Usually itunes opens but it did not this time. I know it is not my computer because when I took back the first Ipod and got a new one, the new had no problems when I put the plug in the port. Now the replacement has a dead battery and is red and I do the exact same thing, plug it up to the port to charge and NO ACTIVITY.
What is going on? Once it goes red is that it? Is this a defect? Thank goodness I purchased the warranty coverage on this unit at Best Buy. But I can't get my money back because it's over 30 days. But they will continue to replace it to up to a year. i don't want to go back and get a 3rd ipod because it's too much time and energy to keep reloading all these songs on the ipod!!
    What should I do?

  • IPod recognition - Need fresh ideas...

Well, this seems to be a "popular" problem, and I have it, too. Windows recognizes my iPod, but not iTunes 7. I have surfed through this forum quite extensively, tried all the fixes, and nothing has worked as of yet. I completely uninstalled and went back to version 6 a little while back, (losing my playlists in the process, what a pain) and decided to retry 7 after doing some scans, sweeps, and such. No recognition still. Are there any new ideas out there, is Apple doing anything (lol), is there light at the end of the tunnel? Or am I on my own here?

OK. I restored an old registry backup that was taken from before the iTunes upgrade... and everything is OK. I had to install iTunes 6, but now my iPod works. Unfortunately I now have to reinstall a bunch of other stuff, too. It'll take awhile, but at least the problem is fixed. It seems the new iTunes corrupts the Windows registry somehow. There's no way I'm gonna "upgrade" until every single last bug is worked out of the new version - and even then I'll take a registry backup right before I do. (BTW I used Systweak's Advanced System Optimizer for the backup. System Restore may work as well...)

  • Unique Ipod Recognition Problem

    Hey,
Alright, thus far I have found no problem similiar to mine with my Ipod mini. Where others state they get a sad face or Exclamation Folder, I get nothing. My Ipod about 2 months ago stopped being recognized by my main computer. It does not show up in My Computer or Itunes, but it does recognize that it initially as it is connected to my USB. I recieve no error messages, or anything, the Ipod just proceeds to "Charge" (even tho it rarely does, which is another thread all together). Here is the kicker, when I tried connecting it to my other computer, it was recognized almost immediatley. Unfortunatly, I have none of my music on that computer and am not willing to transfer my extensive music library to update my Ipod. Does anyone have a clue to what may be wrong with my ipod, or my one computer?
Oh yeah, and all the suggestions that Apple has suggested on that one page did nothing, including putting it disk mode, forceable mounting didn't even work.
    Thanks

  • Strange ipod recognition issues?

using my macbook pro, my 1st gen shuffle is recognised as an old 3rd gen windows ipod with no serial number or software version showing. when i dock it to my other machines (a macbook and another macbook pro) it shows up fine and as an up to date shuffle. what gives?
all these machines run the latest version of itunes, and yes ive reinstalled itunes already a few times in the machine thats giving me trouble but still with the same result!
what is up with THIS version of itunes that it doesnt consider my shuffle as a shuffle and another one does?
is there a particular part or preferece of itunes that makes this decision that i can try trashing?
are there too many questions in this post?

  • Two  iPods on one account?

    Aloha All,
I'm buying a second iPod as my wife frequently borrows mine (she has no interest in using a computer) and I'm wondering if
iTunes will support both my existing iPod and the second one I'm buying. I see no sense in having two separate accounts
since my wife is perfectly happy with my music choices...
If it's pertainent, my current iPod is a 20-GB (4th generation) and the one I'm buying is a 30-GB (5th Generation).
Thanks, in advance for any comments...
    Have a wonderful day!

Yes, iTunes can take multiple iPods; iTunes is designed to be compatible with multiple iPods registered on the same computer.
It's not such a good idea to connect multiple iPods simultaneously, though. Multiple iPods registered to the same iTunes account would be fine, but both at the same time isn't recomended; even though iTunes is capaible to some degree, iPod recognition problems in iTunes will probably occur sonner or later.
See this -> One iPod at a time
If your wife ever wants a different variety of music than yours, or vise versa, try out this Apple article about this -> How to use multiple iPods with one computer

  • Windows XP or iTunes not recognising ipod

I see a lot of posts regarding ipods not being recognised by either Windows and/or iTunes and I just thought that I would pass on this tip that has helped me fix this problem on two Windows PCs.
In both cases the cause of the problem was usb related. For some reason Windows sometimes gets its underwear in a twist with its usb configuration and in both cases the following procedure fixed the problem.
    1.Turn off the computer.
2.Unplug all USB devices from their connections in the computer except for keyboard and mouse.
    3.Turn on the computer.
4.Plug devices back into the computer or hubs, one at a time in the following order. Wait for Windows to find and enable each device before connecting the next.
    a Hubs
    b Printers and multifunction devices
    c Scanners
d External drives (not memory or key plugins)
e Camera and PDA docking stations
    f All other devices
    5. Make sure the devices work.
    That's it.
I know it sounds like alchemy and i'm not suggesting that it will work for everyone with ipod recognition problems but it has certainly worked for me with two PCs. My PC and iTunes happily run 3 ipods - a shuffle,an ipod mini and an ipod nano.
I thought the above might just help some harrassed Dads and Mums from tearing their hair out on Christmas morning.

  • Ipod with click wheel. Windows displays device not recognized problem.

I'm using a ipod with click wheel, and hooking it up through a usb 2.0 port with the stock cable.
I keep getting a device not recognized message from windows, and the itunes software 8.xxxx does not recognize it even in diagnostics tests. Everything else is pass, except the ipod recognition.
The battery needs to be charged, and is depleted but its not recieving a charge when plugged into the computer.
Does anyone have a solution to this?

If the iPod is not getting a charge through the cable (and the battery is depleted), it may not be recognized because the iPod has no power to do anything.
I would say the problem is either a faulty dock connector on the iPod, a faulty cable, or a faulty USB port on the computer. You have probably tested the USB port possibility already by trying a different port (or trying another USB device on the same port), so I would try a different USB docking cable as the next test.

  • Poof. iPod not recognized. Windows did it.

Last night I plugged my 20GB into my laptop and my laptop completely locked up. I dad a "hard kill" power off and rebooted, but I did not disconnect the iPod (stupidly). Windows 2000 ran chkdsk (?), discovered and fixed some error in the iPod files. At that point, after Windows 2000 "fixed" the iPod, it would not proceed with the bootup. Not being able to move forward I did another hard powerdown, and disconnected the iPod. I rebooted normally, called up iTunes, and connected the iPod, but only got a charging icon on the ipod, no iPod recognition on iTunes. I checked the USB device disconnect icon at the lower right toolbar, but it only showed the external USB hard drive I keep my iTunes on. Suggestions?

I had this problem, but not with Windows trying to fix my iPod , just getting the charge icon when i connected my iPod to my PC. Well i just got it working now by Slaping the iPod on the back.
Wouldnt recomend it but it work.

  • Recognizing ipod issue

Ok. After three months, i was finally graced with a sucessfull (almost really) instalation of my ipod. During the ipod recognition in my computer, it says that i need to format my ipod. Fine. I pressed the format button, that it said there was a communication problem with my ipod and that i should disconect and reconect it, and so i did.
But than this error message shows up:
    IpodDeviceInternalAssert
    assertion b failed at .\iPodFormatFAT32.cpp line 1064
    Ipod gods must hate me.

It can be somewhat hard to try to point out if this is an iTunes or Windows problem (sometimes both can work against each other).
It may be the new version of iTunes, though, that is causing this.
First off, do you have iTunes 7.0 or iTunes 7.0.1? If you don't have the latest version of iTunes 7, then try downloading it here, as it may be a solution for some of your issues -> Download iTunes 7.0.1
If you already have tried sucessfully downloading this version, or it doesn't help, you may want to try downgrading to iTunes 6.
The version 6.0.5 can be found on Apple's website (you don't really need to dig out your installaition CD). Try downloading it here -> iTunes 6.0.5 download

  • Suddenly, iPod not recognized

    Hello All,
you've helped me in the past. Hopefully once again! I have scoured these boards looking for an similar problem before I posted, no luck.
First of all, my iPod (40 gig 3rd Gen) works fine. My iTunes (latest update) works fine. However, when I place the iPod in the cradle-attached by firewire to my Windows XP pc all it says not is "charging". WinXP no longer recognizes my iPod. I cannot update it, etc. etc.
I have tried to reset it but it says to connect iPod now (ant it is!). I have tried other firewire ports (my dvd writer uses another firewire port and still works) but still no ipod recognition. I hesitate to uninstall everything if there is an easier fix. Thanks in advance.

    Hello all,
I am so sorry to hear the number of problems caused with the XP users after the installation of the latest iPod updater. I could be wrong, but I am a believer that it is not the software that kills your iPod, rather, it is just during the installation where something wrong happened and screwed either the iPod or the PC. iPod is just a hard disk, unless it is damaged, problems can be resolved by reformatting. iPod updater is a software, it needs to be installed on this hard disk to facilitate the communication between the user and the PC. During the installation process, the header of the hard disk might get stuck at a point (the iPod will show a sad iPod icon or folder icon with an exclamation mark - as it is no longer being able to communicate with the PC) and the process would only manage to get half way through. And regarding the problem where iPod does not manage to be mounted or recognized, it's simliar to a problem of some corrupted OS files.
To make the long story short, how can we fix this then? We can do a Reset or have a full battery charge and hope the iPod can complete the installation process. If fails, I will ask you a question - how are you going to deal with the hardware problem of the header of the hard disk got stuck? Hitting the back of the iPod with your Palm? (I do not know? please refer the following post)
    Mitch 751, "Newest update/iTunes kills iPod?!?" #7, 12:37am Oct 29, 2005 CDT
The key point now is how can we do the reformating and finish the installation process of iPod updater.
I always suggest user to plug their PC formatted iPod with a Mac or vice versa, as when you plug it with the computer, it will be treated as an external Hard Disk and allow you to do the Restore, as the format between PC and Mac is totally diffenent, it may force the stuck hard disk header to move. I did manage to fix many iPods this way, why dont you have a try yourself if you can find a Mac computer.
