IPod recognized, but where's the file?

Whenever I try to sync my iPod (20GB, not sure what Gen) iTunes knows it's there, and it gets halfway done with syncing, but then I get this message:
"iPod cannot be updated because the required file cannot be found."
Then all my work is void. My library and iTunes are working fine. Please help!!! I'm really frustrated, it's been like this since December last year!!! Thanks in advance!!!

Hi Amaya!
A "required file" error message like this one you're getting can be caused by a few different things.
So, let's go ahead and work through some steps to try, one-by-one, and see if anything seems to work for you.
The basic procedure with the following instructions would be to disconnect your iPod from your computer prior to actually performing the task.
Then, when you are complete with that step, open iTunes, and connect your iPod to your computer again, to check if you are still getting the error message. Repeat this kind of sequence as you go onto each next possibility to try:

Corrupt Photo Cache folder:
Sometimes the "iPod Photo Cache" folder(s) on your computer can be corrupted in some way, which causes this error message.
Try deleting this folder off your computer:
1 - Go to "START > Search".
2 - Select "All files and folders", and make sure that you are searching over your entire hard drive.
3 - Then, type "ipod photo cache" in the blank, and click "Search" to begin searching.
4 - When the search is complete, delete any "iPod Photo Cache" folders that you may find on your computer.

iTunes needs to be reinstalled:
It's possible that iTunes needs to be reinstalled, perhaps because some required installation files were not loaded properly, or have been deleted.
Disconnect your iPod from your computer.
Go to "Add or Remove programs" in Control Panel. Find "iTunes" and "QuickTime" on this list, and remove them both.
Then, download the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, to clear out the remaining iTunes and QuickTime installation files off your computer (see this MS document for information on it):
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
Also, use this article to manually remove the left over files from installation:
Removing iTunes and QuickTime for Windows
After you've done that, restart your computer.
Then, go to this page to install the iTunes + QuickTime installation pack onto your computer again:
Download iTunes - 7.1.1.5
Now, restart your computer once more.

Corrupt iTunes Library files:
-- It's possible that there is some sort of corrupt file in the iTunes library, which is causing this error.
When you are getting this error message, does it seem to occur when it hits a particular song(s) in the sync?
If so, then try tracking down where which song that is, and then attempt to play that song in iTunes.
If you think you've found the culprit, delete it from your iTunes library (with your iPod disconnected), and reimport it into your iTunes again.
-- Make sure that your external hard drive is connected. If you store your iTunes library songs on an ex. hard drive, then make sure that it is connected to your computer, or else you will have files that cannot be found in your iTunes library.

USB issues:
This error could also be caused by something with your computer's USB connections with your iPod.
-- First, try connecting your iPod to a rear port, not the front one.
-- With your iPod disconnected, try unplugging all other USB and FireWire devices (except your keyboard and mouse).
-- Update or reinstall your USB drivers. For instructions, see the steps in this article.
-- Also, you could try using a different USB cord. Disconnect your current one from your computer and your iPod, and restart your computer. Now connect the new USB cord (if you have another one) to your computer, and connect your iPod.

Firewall issues:
It's possible that your firewall or antivirus software is blocking an iTunes process (like iTunesHelper.exe, for example), from running properly when your iPod is connected.
First, let's determine what Internet security software you have.
If you're not sure, you can go to "START > All Programs", and browse along the list for your security program.
(Make sure to do the following with iTunes closed and your iPod disconnected.)
Here are a couple of firewall/security programs that come to mind, that we have kbase articles (or I have the security program myself) about how to allow iTunes onto it:
If you're using your Windows firewall, then you can use this article to enable iTunes on it:
How to enable iTunes on Windows XP firewall
If you're using McAfee Personal Firewall Plus, then use the instructions in this article to enable iTunes there.
(That article above only mentions "iTunesHelper", but allow anything Apple/iPod/iTunes related on that list... not sure if that is the only one listed there, but look around anyway).
If you're using Norton Internet Security
If you are using something else, then usually, you launch the program, and go to some sort of section like "Settings", then go to something that says "Firewall settings", "Internet Permissions", or something similar.
Try to find a list of applications that it "Allows/Blocks".
Then, like normal, enable "iTunesHelper.exe", or "iTunes.exe", and "iPodService.exe" or anything else iTunes/iPod related (again, not sure if there are many things on that kind of list).
Now, after you've enabled iTunes processes on your firewall, restart your computer. Then, check your firewall again, just to make sure that your settings haven't changed back to default, and are still allowing iTunes.
Then, connect your iPod, and see if it syncs with iTunes or not.

Let's test something...
If that does not fix your issue, then I would also like to do a little test with how something acts on your computer for you:
With iTunes opened and your iPod disconnected, go to Task Manager (CtrlAltDelete), and click on the "Processes" tab. Here, there ought to be these three processes listed:
iTunes.exe, iTunesHelper.exe, and iPodService.exe.
Carefully watch those three processes (if they are all there), and leave your Task Manager up and runnning so you can see what happens.
Now, connect your iPod to your computer.
Do those three processes stay in your Processes area when the iPod is connected? Or does some other strange thing occur?
For example, do either of those applications only stay for a few seconds when your iPod is connected, then promptly disappear?
Now that were done with the test (please describe the results of what happened in a reply), you can move onto some other possibilities:

Other causes:
There could also be other things that could cause this error.
For example, if your computer is out-of-date with its Windows Updates, that might be a contributing factor.
You could try enabling disk use in iTunes, then resync your iPod with iTunes, and see if the error still occurs. (for instructions on disk use, check disk use
In addition, I would suggest that you could try reinstalling your iPod's software update files.
See this for instructions:
What to do if iPod can't be updated because the firmware file was corrupt or not found
For some more ideas on "other causes", you could take a look at what is mentioned in this article. (i.e., running Chkdsk on your hard drive, or keeping your computer up-to-date with its downloads).

I hope one of those things solves your issue, good luck,
-Kylene

  • ITunes 11 previously imported a video file, which I loaded on to my iPod Nano, but I removed the file from the iTunes library and now it won't (re-)import the same video. Any thoughts on why not?

iTunes 11 previously imported a video file, which I loaded on to my iPod Nano, but I removed the file from the iTunes library and now it won't (re-)import the same video.
I'm using 2 PCs, each with video files (.MP4) on their respective hard drives, and also one external drive with other video files on that I move between the two devices.
iTunes on one PC will (sometimes!) let me add video content from the external hard drive, which is clearly iTunes-compatible, because I can then copy it over to my iPod Nano. On the other PC, I couldn't load that same video from the external hard drive. But if I copied that same video on to the PC's internal hard drive first, then iTunes would let me import it. That was yesterday - now iTunes is refusing to load any files from the internal or external hard drive(s).
    Any thoughts or suggestions, please?

So I tried copying the files from the external hard drive to a USB drive. I could import the video files from the USB drive!
So then I tried importing the same files on to my PC's internal hard drive again. I could import the video files from the internal hard drive!
So then I tried to import the very same files that failed to load on the very same PC previously. I could now import them!
I still can't import from the external hard drive directly, though.
I really don't think I like the process of importing things into iTunes very much... any suggestions on what's causing any of this behaviour would be very interesting.

What version of Premiere Elements and what computer operating system? You have a few other threads awaiting follow up, and consequently that information
    is not available elsewhere.
    What is your specific export...
    Publish+Share
    Computer
    AVCHD
    and Presets = MP4 - H.264 1920 x 1080p30 or something like that.
    Specific please.
But what specifically are you entering in the Save In: field of the dialog that includes the Save button to initiate the export process.
Are you saving it as a file to the Desktop or to a specific folder on the Desktop? Have you given the export a distinctive file name?
The screenshot shows the Save In: to the Desktop as a file.
I have no idea of your background with the program, so I ask these questions so as to take nothing for granted.
If the computer Desktop is crowded, as mine often is, it is easy to have difficulty spotting a file save to the Desktop.
We will be watching for your follow up.
    Thank you.

  • ITunes 10.2.1. downloads, but where are the files?

I've tried four times to download the free program "The House in Cypress Canyon," program H255, from the iTunes Store. The word "Downloads" appears in iTunes, along with the download-progress bar, but where in heck is the file when the download is complete??
I've searched all my playlists, as well as the "Recently Added" list, and there's no sign of the download. Help! (I REALLY don't like iTunes 10.2.1. For six years, iTunes worked beautifully. Now it won't even accept drag-and-drop, and then this problem of simply hiding downloads...)

It will be in the Apps section under the Library heading.
If you can't see the Apps section then go into your iTunes preferences and look on the General Tab.
Make sure you have the Apps tick box selected.

  • I see the folder, but where are the files

I'm trying to do something on my MacBook Pro, running 10.4.6 which I think I used to be able to do with my old Powerbook, and that is to exhange files with a mobile phone.
Using Bluetooth File Exchange I can see the folders of either a SonyEricsson P910i or a Samsung D600 but I can't see the contents of any folder. Copying the folders just results in an error message: "Bad request".
    Please, I need help.

With my Razer, I get that the device doesn't have the necessary services. Most likely another Verizon block

  • When I tried to back up my computer, Time Machine says 'an error occurred while creating the backup folder.' When I check the side of the partition where I manually saved old files, the folders are there, but NONE of the files are.

I haven't backed up my computer in over a year. When I tried to back it up today, Time Machine says 'an error occurred while creating the backup folder.' When I check the side of the partition where I manually saved old photos and documents (including all the pictures from the year I studied abroad/traveled a bunch), the folders are there, but NONE of the files are.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be, or how I could fix it? I really don't want to lose all those photos

So you were doing a time machine backup to another partition on the same hard drive? Just trying to gather some information so i can provide a helpful response.

  • I have to restore my ipod touch, but where will my music be that hasnt sync'd yet that i purchased on my ipod?

I have to restore my ipod touch, but where will my music be that i downloaded from my ipod? It hasnt sync'd to my computer yet because my ipod isnt 'recognized' by my computer, therefor I need to Restore it. But I dont want to restore it if I'm going to lose those songs...

I lost my music once because a faulty hard disk, I got in touch with iTunes support and got back most of it, except those that where pulled off the iTunes Store, but I am not sure what are the current policies. That is why I advice you to take it to the Apple Store, if it is a faulty unit you might get it replaced for free, who knows.

  • Ipod cannot be synced. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable

I have recently had to reload windows xp home edition on my computer and wanted to connect my ipod to load some new music. As it was a new installation the ipod was not recognised. I loaded to latest version of itunes that I have just downloaded and was asked whether I wanted to sync my ipod with this computer in which case I would lose everything that was on the ipod. I choose yes to sync to the new computer but got the error message "the ipod "ipod" cannot be synced. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable". I simply recharged the ipod and continued to use it for a day but then it just ran through the tracks without playing anything until it came to the end of an album and returned to the main menu.
As I cannot play anything I wanted to restore and reload but cant. Could anyone offer any help ? Thanks

I have just managed to connect my ipod through itunes to restore it. However when I tried to connect it to the wall socket to complete the update nothing happens. I have checked the fuse in the plug and that is okay, but the ipod does nothing, not even a light on the display when connected. It seems to have locked up. If I hold it close to my ear I can hear a gentle hum. Also the ipod is not showing up in windows explorer.
    Any suggestions ?

  • Where is the file that contains info on previous session info on a Mac?

Where is the file that contains info on previous session info on a Mac? I would like to restore several windows and tabs I had open earlier, but the restore previous session menu item does not appear to be available. I had to install and use an older version of Firefox (3.6) to access a website (Fedtraveler.com) that is not compatible with Firefox 6 and is seems to have cleared out the previous session information. I thought I would use Mac OSX Time machine feature to restore the Firefox file where this the previous session info is kept but I don't know what it is called nor how to find it.

That is the file sessionstore.js in the Firefox Profile Folder.

  • Where is the File 'Tropical_7.tga'?

A few days ago I created a project using "beachresort_title" under Titles & Text > Travel > Beach Resort.
The title seems to work as expected, however every single time I open the project file I get this window ("Where is the File 'Tropical_7.tga'?") where I am supposed to browse to this TGA file.
It seems the project file should know where it is. But I also searched my computer high and low and can't find it.
Why is this happening and how to fix ?
    Thanks,
    Simon

    Simon
Premiere Elements 12 does not support .tga files which were often used in Title Templates in much earlier versions of Premiere Elements.
From your prior threads, you appear to be working with Premiere Elements 12 in Windows 7 64 bit. So, it is curious why you should be getting "Where is the file Tropical_7.tga?" when you select Titles & Text/Travel/Beach Resort.
Is there a blue pan at the top right corner of the thumbnail for the Beach Resort choice in the Premiere Elements display of title templates? If so, right click that blue ban and select download now. Does that action solve the problem in any way? If not, then
Let us do this to troubleshoot...
    1. Look for the file beachresort_title.png in the following path
    Local Disk C
    Program Data
    Adobe
    Premiere Elements
    12.0
    Online
    Title Templates
    All_Lang
    Travel
    Beach Resort
and in the Beach Resort Folder you should find the beachresort_title.png file. Is it there? Could you post a screenshot of what you find in that Beach Resort folder? If not, then just post what you find there by name.
We will base the next phase of the troubleshooting based on your reply. More later.
    Thanks.

  • "Where is the File?" Window

When you open an existing Premiere CS4 project and it fails to find a file, a "where is the File?" dialogue box opens. This contains a very useful check box "Display only exact Name Matches".
This worked perfectly with CS4.1, but, for me, it no longer works now I have updated to CS4.2.1. This is a nuisance!
Is it just me, or is this feature broken now?

No worries! You just got me hoping for a while there.
I tend to have sets of clips named sequentially, so I have to be careful when this box comes up. I have had some odd results when I have clicked on the wrong file.
