IPod recognized by computer but freezes My Computer

I plug in the iPod it comes up with the usual do not disconnect but when it connects it doesn't show up in iTunes, so when i go onto my computer it comes up with a new drive but doesn't call it iPod and then freezes. After a while a window comes up saying autoplay which tries to do something then goes off again. It then says iPod needs formatting as its corrupted, great I think, it starts up the ipod updater so i can reformat it but no, it freezes. Tried all the fixes, is it well and truely broke??

i'm not sure whether we have the same problem.
my itunes doesnt even register that the ipod is there it just freezes straight away when i plug it in.
now and again on the ipod it'll have the little syncing circle but itunes is completely frozen.

  • IPod recognized and syncs, but won't allow me to manipulate syncing options

    Hi there!
Hopefully someone can help me with this - I want to put a new playlist on my iPod, and currently the syncing options I've selected are to only have it sync with about 5 different playlists on my iTunes. Now when I hook up my iPod via USB, iTunes recognizes it and automatically syncs it with those 5 playlists, but merely states that it is finished and will not allow me to change any options. When I double click on my iPod in the sidebar no screen showing the iPod, how much space is taken up on it, etc. comes up. Thanks for any advice!

Another piece of information that may be helpful is that my computer's options seem to be set in such a way that when I connect my iPod to my computer, iTunes is not the automatic program used. Instead, Windows opens a folder to view the files within the iPod, and to manipulate the iPod in any way I must first open iTunes manually.

  • Ipod recognized by computer but won't sync

I have a 120 gb 6th generation ipod that i bought off ebay. It worked well for a few months but i started having problems with it freezing while scrolling or playing songs. Then it started having minor problems syncing in itunes. In compliance with itunes troubleshooting i preformed the five r's. Upon my restore the ipod stopped syncing with itunes all together. I have searched through countless articles with no avail. I have reinstalled itunes, reset the ipod, run check disk, and nothing seems to work. My ipod is recognized in "My computer" and even auto opens itunes when plugged into the computer, but itunes does not recognize the ipod.
    Please help!
I ran S.M.A.R.T. status and these are my results

apparently the guy i bought it from on ebay baked it in the sun!
Now i have no return policy and no warranty from apple. After my recent restore (which removed everything), i am left with a $200 paperweight.

Seems there are some bad sectors on the hard drive of your iPod, see you can find a mac computer and do a format there ..
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes and click “Restore”

  • 5th gen ipod recognized by itunes but not by my computer.

I wanted to add notes to my ipod but it's not showing up in 'my computer'. The ipod is still recognized in itunes and I can still add and remove songs.
Whenever I plug it in to the computer I a message that says
"Do you want to scan and fix ipod (:J)?
There might be a problem with some files on this device or disc. This can happen if you remove the device or disc before all files have been written to it."
When I click Scan and Fix it says "The disk check could not be peformed because Windows cannot access the disk."
I've completely removed and reinstalled itunes and reset my ipod multiple times. I can't tell you how many time I've gone through the 5 Rs.
Can anyone tell me how to fix this? or If I can fix it? I have Windows Vista.

Follow the instructions in this article.

  • Ipod recognized by computer for only a few seconds?!

My ipod froze up while it was plugged into the computer. I unplugged it and reset it, but now it keeps showing a folder or a battery w/ an exclamation mark when i plug it into the AC adapter. When I plug it into the computer, it'll show the same icons, but then will be recognized by the computer for only a few seconds flashing the "do not disconnect" screen. Is there any way I can fix my ipod? I've tried to update the software on it, but that doesn't work since the computer only recognizes the ipod for only a few seconds. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

Try the instructions in this article; if disk use isn't enabled for the iPod, it will disappear from the computer after the synchronization process is complete.

  • Uploading songs, ipod recognized by computer, not by iTunes

    Hi,
My problem is that my iPod mini is stressing me out. It's been doing this for over 3 weeks now. So, the issue: when I connect my iPod mini to the computer with my USB cable, my computer recognizes it. Unfortunately, I wait and wait for my iTunes to recognize it, but nothing happens. This is the first time it happens. After a while, the iPod updater appears and I click restore, as it is the only button available and it seems to have a bit of logic in clicking it. Ok all well, it's restored. I disconnect the iPod and open iTunes and connect he iPod again. Nothing. and so I realize I have no purpose for it, as it is empty. I want my songs back! I seriously don't know what else to do. I already downloaded the new iTunes and still, I can't upload anything.
Any help would be be great,

  • IPOD recognized by windows but not updater...can someone help me?

    Hi all,
Any help would be greatly appreciated on this one.
My IPOD's old hard drive (10G) went kaput and I bought a new one (the new HD is 15G). I installed the new one and now windows is recognizing the IPOD as an external hard drive but not as an IPOD.
The IPOD is a 3rd generation, 15 gig IPOD without the dock connector.
I am guessing that this is linked to why the IPOD updater won't recognize the IPOD either.
Does anyone have any device for me?
Again, thanks for taking the time to help out!!

You could try a format of the iPod in Windows. A full format does a check and remap of bad sectors on the iPod hard drive, and you would need to restore the iPod as normal (using the iPod updater) afterward. This can also work when the iPod is recognized by the computer, but not by the updater.
First, put the iPod into forced disk mode.
See: How to put the iPod into disk mode.
On your PC, go "my computer" and right click on the iPod, then choose "format". Ensure the settings are at "default" and that "quick format" is not checked. Now select "format". It will take a while, but when that's finished, restore the iPod using the updater.
If you need to, reset the iPod to exit disk mode.

  • Ipod recognized by windows, but not recognized on itunes

Just got a new nano today and tried it on itunes. The nano is recognized on My Computer, but not on itunes. Tried switching USB drives, running restarts, updates to the newest itunes version, restores on the ipod, even switching connecting cables, but nothing worked. Also, when I try to click on the f: drive in My computer, the entire system goes into non-responding mode. Lastly, when new ipod is plugged in, we get a pop up with a flashlight searching and the words "autoplay", like it's searching for it. All of our other ipods work great on the same computer, just not the new one. We're going to return the new one and try again with another nano.

    Re: Autoplay
    Plug in the iPod.
    Double click My Computer.
Right click on the iPod and select Properties.
    Select the Autoplay tab.
In the drop down box, select "Mixed Content".
Choose "Select an action to perform"
and also select "Take no action".
    Re: Not visible in iTunes
Apparently there can be numerous reason for this, e.g.
    [Faulty iTunes installation]
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
[XP confusing Ipod with network drives]
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93499
As a last resort you could try and re-format the Ipod manually and then Restore it using the Ipod Updater. I followed this advice myself when installing the Ipod for the first time, when the Ipod would not be recognized by either the Ipod Updater and hence iTunes.
The thread below gives details as to how proceed with formatting the Ipod.

  • IPOD recognized by iTunes but songs cannot be added or removed from device

When connecting my iPOD to iTunes, it is recognized by the software. When I click on my iPOD on the menu, it lists all of the songs on the device but they are not bold and highlighted. When I try to delete a song(s) or add song(s) to the device from my Library or Purchased tracks it does not allow me to do so. It is almost as if there is some type of seceurity placed upon the device. Any advice?

Sounds like your iPod is set for automatic update, in that mode the songs are greyed out and inaccessible. A lock symbol at the bottom of the screen also means that you are in the 'Automatic' update mode
The iPod offers three ways to transfer music from your computer. You can select one of the following update modes from the iPod Preferences menu in iTunes (Edit=>Preferences=>'iPod' tab):
    1) Automatically update all songs and playlists. This is the default mode, in which your entire music library, including playlists, is automatically synced to your iPod. If the music library on your computer exceeds the iPod storage capacity, you are prompted to select a different update method.
    2) Automatically update selected playlists only. With this option, iTunes automatically copies the playlists you have selected to the iPod when you connect it to the computer.
    3) Manually manage songs and playlists. You can also choose to transfer music to the iPod manually. This allows you to drag and drop individual songs and playlists from iTunes to the iPod.

  • Ipod recognized by windows but not seen in explorer or itunes. only charges

I recently had to reimage my hard drive. Once I got everything back to the way it was, I reinstalled iTunes and the iPod software. However, whenever I try to connect my iPod mini to my computer, Windows will recognize it as a new device and get a "Found New Hardware: iPod mini" bubble. Eventually a "Found New Hardware wizard" window pops up and asks me to install the driver. As I've already installed the iPod software I tell it no and the another bubble pops up telling me that there was an error during the install of the driver. All my iPod will do is charge. I've tried the 5 r's, I've tried everything I could find in the support site that sounded even remotely like what I was experiencing. I've gone through the device manager, but my iPod doesn't show up there at all. I don't get the spinning arrow-circle on my iPod. I have absolutely no clue as to what's wrong with it. Any one have any ideas?

    Hello There
Sorry I don't have the answer to your question but I am having excatly the same problems as you have got, also can't find a solution to this either, my ipod has been wiped and have nothing on it at all now and can't get anything from itunes on it. Hope this makes you feel a bit better knowing your not the only one having these problems, if you manage to sort it, please could you let me knwow and vise versa. Many thanks. Jane

  • IPod recognized by PC but not iTunes or Updater

I have a first generation iPod that was a gift last November. It worked fine and I'm in love with it. A few months ago my motherboard and processor got fried and I had it replaced. (Although I could have sworn I had XP Home Edition before and now I have XP Pro...)
Last Wednesday, I plugged in my iPod (using firewire) and got a message that I needed to run the software updater, so I downloaded the updater and my only option was to restore to factory settings, so I restored. It said to unplug and replug to continue restore and I did and left it sit for HOURS, and then overnight. I had to turn off the computer the next day, so I had to force it to release.
Since then I've tried every fix on Apple's pages for each error I got... I got the access privileges error, which I managed to fix (I think by pure dumb luck on that one)... then I got the Internal Service Error which got fixed and has now returned.
I can see my iPod as drive I in My Computer and when I click on it, it tells me the drive is not formatted, would I like to format it and I click no. iTunes works great, the Updater doesn't work because I keep getting the internal error again. When the iPod is available to me, I can play with it just like it was out of the box... ie.. no songs... I've run the diganostics tests in the diagnostic mode and they all say ok. So, I've got an iPod that works great except for one problem... I can't put any music on it!
Bottom line is, I think I've tried everything I possibly could... does anybody else have any other ideas? I hope so because I can't afford a new iPod and have become very attached to having one!

  • Ipod recognized by Windows, but does not synch

I recently had a hard drive crash, and I used one of those Ipod-to-Itunes programs to transfer my music back onto my computer and itunes. When I plug my ipod in, Itunes recognizes that my ipod is connected, but that's it, it just sits there. I can't manually tell itunes to synch my ipod. Is there something I'm missing here? Then when I try to eject it, it tells me that I can't because there are files in use.

  • IPod recognized by Vista but not iTunes

Hi, I have a perplexing problem. iTunes is suddenly not recognizing my
iPod. Vista does (though has renamed it Apple iPod), but it does not
open (when I try, Explorer hangs)
Nothing happened b4 to provoke this behavior. I uploaded some podcasts
on Friday, went out of town (w/out the iPod), and came back Monday
night. Tuesday, I try to update the iPod and it doesn't show up in
iTunes, but Vista wants to reformat it!
I try the following (suggested in the Apple support pages):
    * I restart the iPod service
    * I completely uninstall iTunes
    * I reset the iPod
Each time I connect the iPod to Vista, it asks if I want to reformat it. I grudgingly restored to see if that would help. I even reformatted it (Quick Format) even though I had heard that was bad. Still doesn't show up in iTunes, but the iPod is happy as a clam, albeit empty of any songs/podcasts.
Any ideas? Oh, and I have an ancient 3G iPod w/ doc connector. After 5
years, (and 3 batteries) it still works like a champ.

You need to install iTunes in order to install the necessary drivers.

  • IPod still plays songs, but freezes

I recently recieved a new iPod from Apple. After updating it with the current updates and synching all of my songs/videos on it, I proceeded to listen to it. The problem comes after it's been on for a while. The screen will 'lock' and it will continue to finish playing the song I'm listening to, but then it freezes and the only thing I can do is reset it. Unfortunately, the problem is still there, and it has done this every time I try to listen to it! Thanks for any help!

  • IPod  recognized by OSX but then immediately ejected.

Plugging in the IPod Nano (iMac - Leopard) causes it to appear on the desktop but then be automatically ejected. Nothing wrong with the iPod since it is recognized by my laptop (Tiger), also it appears to work fine in normal use. If I un-install iTunes then the iPod Nano appears to remain mounted.
I suspect something is wrong with the iPod driver/interface. I am also having problems with iTunes, which doesn't display the start-up window and doesn't respond to most menu selections. Currently using Songbird, which works fine except that the iPod is still mounted and then immediately ejected.
Any help would be much appreciated.

When the Nano is ejected does it disappear from the sidebar in iTunes as well?
In the summary tab for the Nano is "disk use enabled"?
