Ipod restore never ends!?!

I installed the latest updater, launched it, plugged in the ipod and hit restore. Now its been about 20 hours and ipod is still restoring. What do I do?
G4 dual 867   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

It shouldn’t take any longer than a few minutes.
First of all, try clicking on the little x in the top corner, which might take you to the next stage in the process. Sometimes it gets stuck.
If this doesn’t work, shut down the computer, disconnect the iPod, restart the computer, run the updater again, and connect the iPod when prompted.

  • Ipod boot never end...

    Hi all,
I have a big prob with my ipod photo 40GB : I tried to use it in disk mode to backup my hard disk, and during the copy the ipod gave a unknow error. Since this the ipod start the boot (white apple on black background) and never end, the boot restart every 5-10 secondes... no ipod on dekstop so no way to reinstall it with ipod updater. I tried the 5R but it still the same... Please help !!!
    Thanks in advance
    Phil

I am experiencing the identical problem. I am hoping that if I drain the battery until it is completely dead it may force a "hard" reset which when charged again, it may start working properly.
Let me know if you find anything out.

  • The iPod's never ending cycle of death

Every time I try to transfer my songs from iTunes to my iPod, the process just freezes at around 350 songs transferred. I eject the iPod but it remains frozen at the "Do Not Disconnect" screen. I restart the iPod and find out that all my songs are gone. However, the disk space I've used is equivalent to the amount of data I transferred. So I restore the iPod with iPod updater to remove all those corrupted songs that are not showing up. I start with 0 songs again and try my iTunes transfer again. And, of course, the same thing happens. I have absolutely no idea what to do. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello all,
I am so sorry to hear the number of problems caused with the XP users after the installation of the latest iPod updater. I could be wrong, but I am a believer that it is not the software that kills your iPod, rather, it is just during the installation where something wrong happened and screwed either the iPod or the PC. iPod is just a hard disk, unless it is damaged, problems can be resolved by reformatting. iPod updater is a software, it needs to be installed on this hard disk to facilitate the communication between the user and the PC. During the installation process, the header of the hard disk might get stuck at a point (the iPod will show a sad iPod icon or folder icon with an exclamation mark - as it is no longer being able to communicate with the PC) and the process would only manage to get half way through. And regarding the problem where iPod does not manage to be mounted or recognized, it's simliar to a problem of some corrupted OS files.
To make the long story short, how can we fix this then? We can do a Reset or have a full battery charge and hope the iPod can complete the installation process. If fails, I will ask you a question - how are you going to deal with the hardware problem of the header of the hard disk got stuck? Hitting the back of the iPod with your Palm? (I do not know? please refer the following post)
    Mitch 751, "Newest update/iTunes kills iPod?!?" #7, 12:37am Oct 29, 2005 CDT
The key point now is how can we do the reformating and finish the installation process of iPod updater.
I always suggest user to plug their PC formatted iPod with a Mac or vice versa, as when you plug it with the computer, it will be treated as an external Hard Disk and allow you to do the Restore, as the format between PC and Mac is totally diffenent, it may force the stuck hard disk header to move. I did manage to fix many iPods this way, why dont you have a try yourself if you can find a Mac computer.

  • Sync never ends

I have a new 32mb Touch. I originally synced it while on vacation with PC #1, and it worked perfectly. Now I am home, and I have attempted to sync it with PC #2.
I tried several times to sync to PC #2, and each time it would successfully transfer all (or most) of my media, but the sync process would never end.
I am using iTunes 7.6.1.9, and my Touch is version 1.1.3 with Software Upgrade.
I even went so far as to do a total restore of the Touch, but this doesn't seem to fix the problem.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

I ended up calling Apple, and they had me completely reformat the iPod. This seemed to fix the problem.

    iOS- Understanding passcodes
A Complete Guide to Recover Your iDevice if You Forget Your Passcode
If you cannot remember the passcode, you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and resync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present. Refer to Updating and restoring iPhone, iPad and iPod touch software.
Try restoring the iOS device if backing up and erasing all content and settings doesn't resolve the issue. Using iTunes to restore iOS devices is part of standard isolation troubleshooting. Restoring your device will delete all data and content, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, and calendar information, and will restore all settings to their factory condition.
Before restoring your iOS device, Apple recommends that you either sync with iTunes to transfer any purchases you have made, or back up new data (data acquired after your last sync). If you have movie rentals on the device, see iTunes Store movie rental usage rights in the United States before restoring.
Follow these steps to restore your device:
         1. Verify that you are using the latest version of iTunes before attempting to update.
         2. Connect your device to your computer.
         3. Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
         4. Select the Summary tab.
         5. Select the Restore option.
         6. When prompted to back up your settings before restoring, select the Back Up
option (see in the image below). If you have just backed up the device, it is not
             necessary to create another.
         7. Select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you (as long as you've backed up,
you should not have to worry about restoring your iOS device).
         8. When the restore process has completed, the device restarts and displays the Apple
             logo while starting up:
After a restore, the iOS device displays the "Connect to iTunes" screen. For updating
to iOS 5 or later, follow the steps in the iOS Setup Assistant. For earlier versions of
iOS, keep your device connected until the "Connect to iTunes" screen goes away or
              you see "iPhone is activated."
         9. The final step is to restore your device from a previous backup.
If you can not restore your device then you will need to go to recovery mode.
Placing your device into recovery mode:
Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
         1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the other end
of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
         2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the
red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake
and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off, release the Sleep/Wake
              and Home buttons.
         3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device.
The device should turn on. Note: If you see the screen pictured below, let the device
charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some charge, and then
             start with step 2 again.
         4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.
When this screen appears you can release the Home button.
         5. If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:
         6. Use iTunes to restore the device.
If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
    Additional Information:
Note: When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup. See this article for more information.

That would be the best thing to first do and then use the recovery media of which you will now have to order since the O/S seems corrupted beyond repairs. This way you can be sure the recovery media will restore it back to factory install and hopefully they will not do this again til they will consult first before upgrading the O/S.

-My wifi connection is running strong
-All the devices run the same version of iOS

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. I recently purchased an album from itunes.  When I subsequently sync'ed my ipod touch I ended up with all tracks of that album doubled on my ipod and I lost all my playlists. Subsequent syncing has not fixed it.  Any ideas what to try?

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

No, I do not want to "factory reset" my iPod. No I do not wish to do anything crazy long or hard to fix this.
