IPod restore - unknown error 1418?

I was trying to restore my iPod since it skips every single song except for the ones that I have purchased from the iTunes store and I keep getting this error. Does anyone know what this error means and how to fix it or restore your iPod without getting the error? Or getting your songs to not skip? *the songs play in iTunes just not on the iPod

some folks have been having success with eboncairn's technique with the 1417 and 1418:

  • Unable to restore my 5th gen ipod video (unknown error 1418)

going through, listening to a regular album on my ipod speakers, as i usually do, my ipod just abruptly freezes after the end of one song. upon reseting, i was presented with the apple logo upon a black background, as usual, and then a white screen saying "connect to your computer. use itunes to restore." in four different languages. from there it switches itself off. when i try to turn it back on, it does the same.
i connected it to the computer to do as it suggested, where it proceeds to freeze my computer for up to 10 minutes, until the ipod does appear in itunes. when i try to restore it however, im presented with an error stating 'an unknown error has occurred. error 1418', or something to that effect.
so following the apple website's instructions, i updated itunes to 7.6, and tried again to no avail. i tried a different usb port, reregistered .dll files, and updated my windows USB drivers, but this has changed nothing.
can anybody suggest any other factors that are stopping me restoring. i have accepted the fact that i will need to restore it, its just a matter of now completing that task.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

One possible cause is a drive conflict...
Windows confuses iPod with network drive or hard drive and may keep iPod from mounting or songs may seem to disappear

  • Ipod Restore - Unknown Error

I turned on my ipod this morning, and updated it from my library, on unpluggin my ipod from the USB, it stopped working, it then began to display the message "Connect to computer, use iTunes to restore". So i did, My computer didnt recognise my ipod. I went through the 5 Rs, restarted my ipod services and also tried to put my ipod into disk mode. This worked, and when I plug it in in disk mode, iTunes finds my iPod and says it has been corrupted (I dont know how) and needs to be restored. I Click Restore and itunes begins to download an update, however it is the firmware for the old scroll wheel ipod, not my 5th gen, without giving me any kind of options, when it tries to install, it brings up an unknown error (number 1418).
Can someone please help me? Will I have to Send my iPod off for repairs? I hope not.

Some people have had success trying the fix mentioned here.

  • IPod restoration problem Error:1418

    Hi everybody...
i downloaded the latest version of the itunes..
i then connected my ipod, it asked me to update... so i updated but it couldnt update it somehow and gave me the following error:
the iPod could not be restored. An unknown error occured (1418)..
All my songs has disappeared.. and all i can see on its screen is.. "use itunes to restore"
i dont know what to do... its my uncles ipod.. should i go to the apple store.. or is there any other way out..
    help!

I bought a new iPod nano and had problems when plugged into the iMac. I wrote the following post on another thread but it should also be applicable here.
"Apple should tell the buyer/user on the package (or the instruction booklet) that the 3rd generation iPod nano requires Mac OS X v10.4.8 or later, and iTunes 7.4 or later (I have to do a little search to find these info on http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/specs.html).
The best way is to use the latest version of Tiger (v10.4.??) and the latest version of iTunes. Otherwise, if the existing versions are not update enough, you plug in your new 3rd generation iPod nano, it will come up with errors. That was my experience this morning. To get the latest version of Tiger update and iTunes update, the easiest way is click on the blue Apple icon on the top left corner of the screen and choose Softeware Update. Then choose to update Tiger and iTunes, if the computer does not already have the most recent version.
Restart the computer after updates, plug in your iPod nano, there will be a Finder error message about 'an unknown disk' or something like that. Don't worry, just ignore that message. Start up iTunes and you will be asked to Restore the iPod software. Say yes and things will go smoothly from there.
Again, Apple should do better by telling the buyer/user what software is required in the package or instruction booklet. This will avoid surprise and disappointment which could happen when you plug in your brand new iPod nano and the first thing you receive is ERROR messages! Apple, get your act together for the customers! This is for your good and the good of the customers! Apple needs to listen to its customers in order to provide a genuinely good service, and not just sound bites!"

  • Solution to "Unknown Error 1418"

I had the unknown error 1418, but I finally found a solution (with the help of this discussions). I hope this to be useful for you.
I am going to describe what happened since I had the first iPod's problem until I solved "Unknown Error 1418":
    1. My iPOD was connected to my computer and the songs were being written in my iPOD, until the battery was too low and the iPOD turn off and disconnected.
    2. I charged the battery and then I connected my iPOD to my computer again. iPOD was recognized by Windows XP and by iTUNES, but it doesn't start the songs transference. So, after a long waiting (15' aproximately), I disconnected the iPOD, although the message at the iPOD was "Please, do not desconect".
    3. I reconnected the iPOD to the computer and, after waiting, appeared a message approximately like this: "iTUNES cannot read the iPOD. Please restore your iPOD". For me this message appeared in spanish, so this is just my approximate translation.
    4. I restored my iPOD with the latest version of iTUNES, clicking in the restore button at the Summary tab of the iPOD options of iTUNES. The informacion in that window was:
Name: IPOD (It's real name was "iPOD de Samuel García Vargas")
Capacity: n/d (It's real capacity is 15 GB)
    Software Version: 2.3
Serial Number: xxxxxxxxxxx (It's correct serial number)
    Format: Windows
But after restoring, a new message appeared: "You cannot restore your iPOD. Unknown error (1418)". Here I have written an approximate translation to english from the spanish original message.
    5. After trying the "five RS steps" I had no results.
    6. So that's the reason why I came to the discussions of iPod and Jeff Bryan helped me by posting this discussion topic: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=640556&tstart=0
    7. Then I didn't follow exactly what the topic said because the dialogue box telling that "a new version of firmware (ver. 1.2) was available" didn't appear. But it gave me an idea.
    8. So I restarted the computer and connected the iPod. I had the same problems that I have described before (3 and 4) but while iTunes was trying to restore my iPod (without success), I disconnected the iPod, reset it (see the first step at "the five Rs steps") and reconnected to the PC... and iTunes continued the restoring (even while there was no iPod connected) and finally restored my iPod!!
    A happy ending.

  • Unknown Error 1418 when restoring ipod

I hope someone can help me fix my Ipod problem. I have the first edition of the U2 Ipod and when I was in Ireland it malfunctioned. I took it to an Apple Store today and they restored it to factory setting using a mac. Well I brought it home, I did what the man at the store said to do and downloaded 7.0 and then when prompted tried to restore the Ipod using Windows. When I did the message "Could not restore ipod, unknown error (1418)" appeared. Does anyone know what this means and what my next step should be?
I am so close to being able to have my Ipod fixed and put my music back into it but I cannot get past this stupid error message. Does anyone know whether he screwed up my Ipod by formatting it using a Mac or what I should do next? The man said my Ipod was corrupted by something, could this be the problem? This is so frustrating because I am so close to having my Ipod back to normal and now don't know what to do. Thanks, would appreciate any help anyone can offer!!

  • HELP!!!!  ipod unknown error 1418

Hi if any one could help me asap i would be very grateful… the problem is:
i have a ipod photo 20gb, i try to restore it from itunes 7 and half way of restore it show me this message "unknown error 1418".
After that i try to reset my ipod, it restart, show a apple logo than displays a folder icon with an exclamation point, and it keep repeat this process and i cant even shut it down.

One more voice! I did the whole uninstall thing with iTunes 7 and carefully removed every last vestige of Apple crap. When I reinstalled it, the restore progress bar took a lot longer to fail (like 5 min. compared to 15 sec. prior) but still snubbed the 1418 error at me.
Since this is an HP shuffle, Apple won't even give me the time of day, even though it is a shuffle, just like any other, but it has an HP graphic on the back. The HP support people (in Bangalore?) so far have not been much help. Oh, the Apple technical arrogance....

If you experience this issue on a Mac, disconnect third-party devices, hubs, spare cables, displays, reset the SMC, and then try to restore. If you are using a Windows computer, remove all USB devices and spare cables other than your keyboard, mouse, and the device, restart the computer, and try to restore. If that does not resolve the issue, try the USB issue-resolution steps and articles listed for Error 1604 above. If the issue persists, it may be related to conflicting security software. If the errors persist on another computer and known-good USB cable, the device may need service.

  • ITunes showing unknown error 1418 - Help!!

Ok, so I got my new 5th Generation iPod for my birthday to replace my iPod mini. I put all my old music onto it and listened to it today with no problems.
However, I'd bought 2 albums from iTunes last night and was annoyed to find that they had not synched onto the iPod.
When I got home I plugged my iPod in and it started saying "do not disconnect" straight away...when it was finished I dragged one of the albums I'd bought so that it would synch onto the iPod - this is where the problems started:
    1. It started saying that a music file on the iPod itself was corrupted and unreadable.
    2. I ejected the iPod and tried again, and again...it would always show "do not disconnect" and was untouchable in iTunes. It would still work fine when not plugged in though.
    3. When I last plugged it in iTunes claimed to not be running properly and had to be shut down. I also restarted the whole computer.
    4. I have now decided to restore the iPod to its factory settings to remedy the corrupted file situation but when the restore process is taking place a message comes up saying that the iPod cannot be restored due to an unknown error 1418.
    5. My iPod now says "do not disconnect" in an MSDOS-style screen (it's all gone black and white and fonts are smaller than usual) when it is connected and when I disconnect it it just says that it must be restored and plugged in...so it's all a viscious circle.
I'm sorry this has been so long but I wanted to include as much info as possible so that someone might help??!
    PC   Windows XP   iTunes 7.0.2.16

Having read another post with a similar issue I'm going to try to disconnect my iPod while the restore bar shows up on the screen, then reconnect it...
Does anyone have any other suggestions or tips/hints to try?
I already have tried what the site said to do re. error 1418 but nothing worked and am now getting desperate!

    Hi msclaude,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  I'm not sure from your post what steps you have tried, but it sounds like you may need to use recovery mode to address the issue with your unresponsive iPod touch.

If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
You can put your iOS device into recovery mode, then restore it using iTunes.
    Use recovery mode
You might need to use recovery mode to restore your device in these cases:
iTunes doesn't recognize your device or says it's in recovery mode.
You see the Apple logo onscreen for several minutes with no progress bar.
You see the Connect to iTunes screen.
Learn what to do if you see the progress bar onscreen for several minutes.
To put your device into recovery mode, follow these steps:
Turn off your device and leave it off.
Plug in your device's USB cable to a computer with iTunes.
Hold down the Home button on your device as you connect the USB cable. Keep holding down the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
When you see this screen, release the Home button. If you don't see this screen, try steps 1 through 3 again.
When your device is connected, iTunes will open. You'll see a message saying that iTunes has detected an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch in recovery mode.
Use iTunes to restore your device. Restoring in recovery mode will erase your device. If you previously synced with iTunes or iCloud, you might be able to restore from your backup.Get more help
Learn what to do if you don't see your device in iTunes for OS X, or in iTunes for Windows.
If you put your device into recovery mode by mistake, restart it. Or you can wait 15 minutes and your device will exit recovery mode by itself.
I hope this information helps ....
