IPod restored on Windows won't mount or Restore on Mac...

Hi all...
Trying to help a friend who replaced his hard drive in his 3rd gen iPod. After changing the drive, his Mac wouldn't recognize and restore (using latest iPod Updater). So I hooked it up to a PC (via USB), and ran the Updater there; worked fine, iPod restarted normally.
Tried to then connect that iPod to a Mac (via Firewire), but wouldn't show in iTunes, wouldn't mount on desktop.
Tried again to run the Mac iPod Updater, which saw the iPod, picked Restore, it started... but then gave a message about a "file is open on iPod", and quit. There are no files open on the iPod.
Tried using Disk Utility, which sees the drive as a FAT32 drive, to reformat it as HFS, but begins to do that but gets hung up.
Any suggestions as to how to get an iPod which works fine with a PC to sync back to the Mac it was originally used with?
thanks

Yeah, I did have the same experience, and lucky that I managed to solve it. I remember that I put my iPod in Disk Mode and pluged it with my Mac, opened the disk utility, but went to Tab "Partition" and clicked Delete, went back to "Erase" and clicked Erase. Once it had completed, opened the iPod updater and clicked "Restore". If you cant solve it this way, go back to your PC and do a format instead of Restore. It really does not matter the the Format get completed or not, as when you plug it (even better - without an iPod software) with a computer (in disk mode), it will recognize it as an external disk and ask you whether you want to format it then do a Restore and you will put it back to life. Bear in mind that the problem is the computer recognizes it as an iPod but does not allow you to do a Restore.

  • My iPod is JACKED! Won't mount, won't show files, etc...

    Hi, someone help!
So I have a 3rd generation iPod, about a year and a half old. I had been having no problems with it ever since I first bought it, but now I have a serious one: it shuts itself down when I insert the firewire cable into my 15” Powerbook.
Here’s what happened: I tried to update the software about a month ago and somehow “erased” all the music on the iPod. I say “erased” because when I scroll through the “artists” section on the iPod, it shows that I have nothing there, yet when I go to “About” under “Settings” it tells me I only have 36MB left on a 20GB iPod. I had almost filled it all the way up before this happened. So are my files there, or no? We’ll get back to that…
This is what happens now: I charge the iPod (separate from the Powerbook), and am able to see the Main Menu. Then, when I plug it in, not only does the computer not recognize it, but the second it gets plugged in, the iPod crashes, tries to restart, but I only see the little magnifying-glass-looking-at-a-CDROM…like it’s trying to search for its operating system.
What do I do?? I want my files, but I also want a functioning iPod. I refuse ot buy a new one out of mere principle (F Apple for making these things die after a year so they can sell you a new one. Seirously). I’d be willing to sacrifice my files if I can just get a new OS installed on this iPod? Any idea how to do that when it won’t even start up properly when plugged into the Powerbook?
Most importantly, does this sound like a completely helpess hardware issue?
Thanks in advance, I’ll be crying in the corner waiting for your help.

    FIXED IT!!
Oh man, you're gonna love this...
Remember what happened when you plug in the iPod? The CD-ROM with a magnifying glass icon just keeps spinning, right? Well, let it sit for at least one hour, maybe two. You'll see that the little bar underneath the CD-ROM will start filling in slowly.
Once it's done, you will see an icon that looks like this:
    http://www.peachpit.com/content/images/exr_0819ipod/elementLinks/figure7.6.gif
That icon means that the iPod hard drive has passed the test that was just run. Click on the menu button to restart your iPod.
Now, the volume should mount on your desktop. It may not register in iTunes, it may not have updated software anymore, but at least it will mount.
    Here's the WEIRD PART:
As soon as it mounted, I got the spinning beach ball for like 5 or 7 minutes as iTunes tried to open and register the iPod. Eventually it said something along the lines of "Cannot view the contents of your iPod. Please download the latest software and restore your iPod to factory settings." However, when I was able to view my ITUNES LIBRARY, all the old songs from my iPod (previously invisible) had updated into my library! ***?
Anyway, now, open Disk Utility. Select the iPod volume and click the "Erase" tab. Erase the whole thing. When I did this, Immediately after it is erased, a prompt came up that said "Software Update has detected that new software is available for your iPod. Would you like to install it now," to which I repied YES, PLEASE. I then selected "Restore" on the next prompt, which erased all files on my iPod and restored factory settings.
I now have a working iPOD BABY!! For now...
Good luck to all of you out there who have to go through the painful process of watching an older iPod become utterly obsolete and non-functioning. Apple is porking us. I can only hope this post helped somebody out there.

  • IPod Video 80 Gig won't mount on desktop or in iTunes

I just bought a new ipod video 80 gig. And a MacPro.
It worked great for about a week, and works when it is not connected to the computer, but when I connect it it just displays the "do not disconnect" screen and won't appear in itunes or in the finder.
despite resetting, re-installing itunes, I can't get it to mount on any computer.
Is this a Apple Store issue, or is anyone aware of a fix?

    Seen these?

iPod does not appear in iPod Updater or iTunes in Mac OS X.

  • IPod Mini freezing/windows won't acknowledge..

Hey guys, I need some help.
I was at the gym today using my iPod mini and while I was going through the songs, the iPod froze. I have tried reseting it by holding down the play and menu buttons at the same time, (Someone said this would work) but that didn't do anything. I brought it home and plugged it into my computer to reset or restore it (cuz at this point it doesn't matter if I loose all the songs), but the computer doesn't notice that the iPod is plugged in. Where do I go from here?
When I got the iPod I didn't buy the extra protection with best buy so If I can't fix it this way, I will have to buy a new one, which is money I dont have.
Can someone help me fix this?

Hello Jennifer, Mine too locked up and tryed resetting etc.
Still my computer does not acknowlege it.
I will be watching to see if anyone out there has a solution before i bring it back!

  • IPod Touch 1st Gen Won't Connect To PC or MAC Stuck On iTunes Logo

I have an iPod Touch 1st Generation, I have searched a lot of forums and google and I can not find an actual solution for this...
The ipod is stuck on the itunes logo(connect to itunes to restore), but when you connect it it isn't recognized by itunes. When I plugged it into a PC it "dinged" and popped up a message saying like an "unknown device" message. In the control panel it shows as "unknown device." How can I fix this.
Please don't "answer" this by saying RESTORE it. Can't do that as it doesn't come up in itunes. I've tried the advice on the Apple website; reinstall itunes, delete several files, etc. That didn't work.
Thank you in advance for any answers/help.

  • How do I reformat an IPod Touch for Windows that has been formatted for a Mac?  All instructions I have been able to find use ITunes or Device Manager to reformat.  My IPod is not being recognized by ITunes or in Device Manager.

I have an IPod Touch that has been formatted for a Mac.  All instructions I have been able to find use ITunes or Device Manager to reformat the device for Windows.  This cannot be done if Windows doesn't recognize the device.  Is there another way to set the device back to the factory settings directly on the device without using ITunes?

Ipod touch is not formatted one way or the other at all.
Just sync it to the new computer using itunes.

  • IPod won't mount on new Mac Pro

I just got a new Mac Pro that came with Snow Leopard. After getting everything setup I plugged in my iPod shuffle and it won't mount when plugged into either of the 2 front USB ports or any of the 3 back USB ports. When I plug it into the USB port on the keyboard it mounts and I can sync it through iTunes. When plugged into the front two ports the green charging light comes on, but it doesn't mount. The back 3 ports just cause the iPod to blink the green charging light quickly, it isn't a solid green.
I don't know if this is a Snow Leopard problem or the Mac Pro. The iPod was working perfectly with my G5 running Leopard.
    Any ideas?
    david.

I just don't get computers sometimes (even after being a software developer for over 25 years).
I had restarted the computer multiple times while installing other software but the iPod would not mount.
I took your suggestion to try another USB device and the only other device I had was a Canon scanner. I installed the drivers which required another restart. And the scanner worked and now the iPod works on all of the USB ports. It is mounted in iTunes and I can sync it on any port.
I checked the console logs files and didn't find anything unusual before it didn't work and nothing different now that the iPod mounts.
    David.

  • 1gb IPod Shuffle won't mount

My IPod Shuffle beginning yesterday won't mount on my desktop and isn't recognized but ITunes on both my desktop and laptop. But through System Profile>Hardware>USB, the IPod shows up in a USB port. Could this be because of an ITunes or Ipod update.
      Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Dual 867 G4, Ibook G3

It could be due to an update .... had you updated either of them?
Do the simplest things first: Just log out to a Restart and see it that makes the Shuffle appear. That done, plug it into a working high-power port and just leave it there for a while, say up to an hour.

  • Won't mount. Wiped Clean. What next?

My iPod froze up. Then I had to recharge it (i guess the battery was depleted). But all my music is gone and it asks me what language do I want? I connect it to my G5 with the latest iTunes and iPod updater and it won't mount on the desktop nor will it appear it iTunes. The iPod shows the "Do not disconnect" message on the iPod, but nothing mounts.
I have reinstalled iTunes. I have reset the iPod. I tried loading the iPod updater but I don't get a status bar when it is running and then I have to force quit it after about 10 minutes of it doing nothing.
I need some help! 4G w/ click wheel.

    This solution worked for me!!

  • Hard drive won't mount - but only on one Macbook Pro

    Hi guys
So I have a brand new Macbook Pro 2.4 with retina and 8gb (like 2 days old). I'm on Mavericks. This question also concerns a Lacie Rugged USB3 1TB drive, it is bus power only.
My lacie won't mount on my new mac. An identical lacie will, as will a few older other lacie drives I use for archiving and occassional long term backups. I've checked this unmountable drive on 8 different macs (friends, work, mothers) everything from other imacs, to old G5 power pcs, and even my mums ancient ibook g4. They'll all mount it. My macbook pro wont.
    * It's nothing to do with ports (all ports work and power various devices) and cables (different cables also do not work, and they work with other drives).
    * It does not appear in disk utility
    * It does not appear in the system profiler/report even though the ports show up no trouble
    * the drive powers and spins up
    * i've even just formatted the drive on another computer in extended journal and it still does not appear yet will still mount on another machine
I'm tearing my hair out. Help me! Does anyone have any idea's what the **** is up with this thing?
    Thanks

  • Data CD's won't Mount

I recently upgraded the RAM and operating system. Prior to upgrading, I had already noticed that CD's sometimes did not mount on the first try. After upgrading, it seems that data CD's mostly won't mount, audio CD's mostly mount, and DVD's mount.
Now, I don't use my CD drive all that much, so I don't know if this has something to do with the upgrade or whether it's just a coincidence. Here's what I've tried so far without success...
    1) Repaired Permissions.
    2) Repaired Disk from Install disc. Message indicated that no repairs were necessary.
    3) Downloaded and re-installed Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update (PPC), and repaired Permissions.
    4) Tried a Safe Boot.
    5) Tried booting FirmWare (AppleOption+OF), and entering the following commands:
    set-defaults (hit return)
    reset-all (hit return)
    6) Verified RAM specifications.
    7) Ran the Apple Hardware Test. All components passed.
Anyone have any ideas? Or do you think the drive needs replacing?
    Thanks!

Are any commercial pressed CDs other than the Office
    disc causing problems?
I just tried a number of commercially pressed CD's without a problem. These included 4 of the OS X Jaguar 10.2 CD's, Logitech, Lexmark, and Norton AntiVirus. I also tried an audio CD and had no problem. However, when I tried a data CD (Verbatim CD-R), it wouldn't load.
    It's possible that the Office
disc is itself defective (MS should be willing to
replace it if it won't mount in any other Macs)...
That's great! I'll have to see if I can find someone with a Mac so that I can test the disc.
There are some CD-R/DVD-R stoarge tips at the NIST's
Care and Handling of CDs and
    DVDs...
That's great! I'll check it out...
... although the single biggest step you can
take to ensure long CD-R life if to find high-quality
blank discs to use in the first place.
    Which ones do you recommend?
Let us know about other commercial discs and if the
    lens cleaner helps.
I didn't get a chance to buy the lens cleaner today, but I should be able to buy one tomorrow. I'll definitely let you know whether it helps.

  • IPod classic corrupted and won't restore on Windows

So I have an 80Gb iPod classic. While I was transferring some files something went wrong with the USB connection and iTunes immediately froze and so did my iPod. So I reconnected my iPod and now it won't let me transfer any files because it keeps getting stuck. Then I tried to restore and got an error that I was unable to restore. I disconnected my iPod and it seems like it restored because the next thing I knew everything has been wiped out. But when I connected it to my PC a message appears that the iPod is corrupted and a windows prompt appears telling me to format the disk. So here's what I've done.
    -formatted the iPod in FAT32
-connected the iPod, no 'iPod corrupted' message appears.
-tried to restore, but received the same error message, won't restore
-when iPod disconnected it went through the same cycle (iPod restoring-then iPod corrupted-iPod needs to be formatted)
-went to Apple service center, they restored it using a mac and everything went smoothly, song were able to be transferred without a glitch.
-however will not work on PC needs to be restored again
can someone help to shed some light? is there something wrong with the hard disk? If yes, then why can it be restored through mac but not windows?
what can i do to solve this problem?
    thanx

I was sort of relieved to read that I am not the only one with freezing issues.
I have been to the apple store twice only to be told there is nothing wrong and of course my warranty has expired !! I have the Model A1136 EMC No. 2065 80gig classic ipod. My dell computer is only 2 weeks old and works fantastic, however, when I open itunes and my ipod and it freezes, so does my pc and I have to do a task manager to get out of itunes and there are times when I can't and have to reboot my pc.
Well it has been two weeks now of me trying all that I can to fix the issue and only thing I can see so far that it freezes up when its in the analyzing the gapless sound upon adding music from my folders, etc etc. So I tried to "uncheck" everything that had to do with the sound and it worked. Oh and by the way, try setting your ipod on disk mode when you are trying to restore the ipod. It works better that way. Don't know what is going on but I am so angry with myself for being so attached to this ipod There is nothing out there that compares to my ipod and it's amazing the prices of mp3 that even come close to 80 gigs.
Good luck to all and if I find anything else to share, I certainly will Don't hesitate to email me if someone finds out or has a patch or something to get this thing going properly again bye for now ,,,,,,,,

  • I have restored my iPod classic and everything has been wiped off, now when I connect it to the laptop, iTunes doesn't recognise it and windows won't format it, an error message comes up "unable to format"

It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive.  I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread.  He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.
