IPod sad face question

so i got my pod for christmas, all went well. then last friday, as i was taking it out of my pocket, it fell to the stone floor in my school, and when i later went to turn it on, it clicked a few times at the apple logo, then displayed a sad face.
i use a 30 gb 5th generation iPod i think, the one with pictures and movie capabilities.
i followed the steps on the support page, trying to force my iPod into disk mode and restoring my iPod. is there anything i can do besides sending it in?
i also went through the iPod service request thing. gave me an error about my serial # when i know for a fact it could not be wrong.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

Don't waste your time sending it in, the warranty doesn't cover accidental damage. Apple will send it right back and may charge you a diagnostic fee of up to $100.

Ive tried basically everything and my ipod wont reset or go into disk mode. it is sitting on my power adapter making beeping noises and flashing between the apple logo and an ipod sad face-can someone tell me how to get it into disk mode or make it work?

hi there! it just happened to me. keep on trying to reset the ipod until it mounts on the desktop and the finder. What i did was open the disk utility, erase the drive, repair permission, and verify. after that your ipod becomes a hard drive. the ipod software will be gone. just load the latest ipod software updater and all is well. hope this helps. good luck.

Ipod 'sad' face

The other night my Ipod just froze. It was working fine, but then the buttons stopped working. Eventually it would work, but then it wouldn't play any songs. It would go from 0:00 of one song, then skip to 0:00 of the next one. Then it stopped working altogether, and froze on the main screen. This morning whenever i try to turn it on the apple shows up, the the sad face with the ! beside it. I tried resetting it about 10 times, and disk mode another 10 times. When i plug it into my computer the battery charge sign shows up, but its frozen and doesn't move. I cannot find any suggestions on what to do, should I just send it into maintenance? I only have a few days left on my 1 year warrenty.

1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“Partition Magic”.
C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. Tips
a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iPod updater.
b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”
Advance Level
A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"

You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.

Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. Have I tried this myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. IPOD SAD FACE HELP

Hello,
I have an older version of the iPod from 2004 without the color or video display.
Basically, one day I was using my iPod and this sad face came up. I have been out of the country and unable to fix it until now. Sometimes when I tried to recharge it, the iPod would magically work. Alas, within a few minutes the sad face would reappear.
I have not touched my iPod in over 4 months. I tried to recharge it again and it started to work but this time ALL my music is gone? I made an appointment to get it properly fixed. But do you think I lost all my music for good????

I had te same problem as you... Maybe your iPod is totally dead... anyways, I changed mine and get te latest model.. I prefer that than always trying to make it work!!

My iPod shows a sad face when I plug it into a power source, and when i plug it into my computer, it shows a folder with an exclamation point. None of the instructions on the website are helping me...when I connect my ipod to my computer, a folder pops up labeled IPOD (E:). ITunes also displays a message that I need to download the new iTunes software, which I don't really want to do, I like the current version, but I will if I have to. During all of this, my iPod is clicking very loudly and when I hold it I can feel it clicking.
I'm very worried, and not really looking forward to having to buy a new iPod.

IPod Sad Face, unrecoverable?

I bought an iPod Photo 30GB on mid April 2005. All went good until a month later when i took my iPod and left it on a van. Water dropped on my iPod and it got wet. I brought it to an Apple store where they said they could fix it. The iPod was suposedly fixed. Now its January, i got my Ipod back on the beginning of september. I haven't been able to use my iPod since october because it just started giving me Sad faces. I gave up and i left it on my shelf. Now im getting back on it and i decided to try it one more time. Just now i tried to turn it on and i coulnt; even when touching all the buttons. I conected my iPod to the computer and the apple logo popped out. Then the sad face. I reset it again and a battery trying to charge appeared but it doesnt show any movement. After some time, the iPod turns off and nothing appears on the screen. While this process the iPod is conected to the computer. If i conect it to the AC power, the iPod just keeps on reseting and showing the sad face one after another. Several things could keep iPod from appearing in iTunes or in the Desktop/Finder when you connect it to your PC/Mac. The most likely causes are listed below in logical order. Check each one starting from the top of the list to see if that is what's keeping iPod from appearing.

i had recently had a problem with my 5th gen ipod click wheel so i asked for a service. while they were sending the shipping equipment, i god a sad face display which has turned out to be a hardware problem. can i still send in the ipod even though the service is for a click wheel problem, or do i have to wait for this to expire and get a new service request. the warrenty expires in november so no worrie there. help please, thanks.

I would suggest that you try fixing your current problem with your sad-faced iPod. Then, if you can fix it, proceed to send it off to Apple again.

30GB iPod the ipod wont turn on and shows sad face?

I recently got a 30GB iPod off a friend after helping him move. He had not used it in awhile. It was just in a drawer. It will not turn on unless unless you plug it into the computer and it shows the iPod sad face. I guess from what he told me, he ran out of the Applecare and was told that it was a virus and had to be taken to an Apple Store to be restored. He never did because he got a 80GB for a gift.
Does this sound like a Battery issue or a Hardware issue? I have not done anything to it yet, I've been busy. But was told the battery was great on it, so I'm thinking it's more hardware so I can just throw it into disk mode and restore it.

Sad face on iPod - will reset but then freeze

I've been on the Apple website for about an hour and need some help. I toggled the hold switch as instructed, made sure that the iPod was hooked up to a charge, pressed the select and menu buttons until the Apple icon came up, but then I still just get the iPod with the sad face on it telling me to log into Apple support.

Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

Sad Face on my Ipod. is it battery related?

I have an ipod 20Gb 4th gen/. Earlier today, it seems to have been a battery problem, i kept charging but the battery comes with one bar red, then a folder with exclamation pt. I was able to go to disk mode.
Now all of a sudden , i get a Sad face and nothing responds, Menu+select or Select+Play doesn't seems to respond.
I am thinking of buying a new battery and install it. can it be it?

Few things :-
1. Battery normally need to be replaced every 18 months
2. Folder of exclamation icon = corrupted or bad iPod OS file
3. Sad iPod icon = Hard drive problem

Intermediate Level
A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
For Mac computer
1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. Tips
a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.

1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. Help plz my IPod has a sad face

Okay so i turned on my ipod today and it has a sad face with a question mark on it. When i read the book it told me to reinstall the program and i keep doing that but it just doesnt go away. Got any idea how i can fix my ipod?
