Ipod sad icon

i have a 30 Gig video ipod and when i click on a song to play it stays at 00 and will not play. Then when i restart it a sad icon appears. I put it in disk mode and tried to restore it but an unknown error 1418(i think that was it) appeared. Please help me!!

Ipod Sad Icon Symbol - Fully Discharged - No charging...

I left my 60Gb ipod in my office drawer during the weekend. On Monday when I tried to turn it on it showed the low battery symbol (althought it was fully charged on Friday) and when I plugged it into the USB cable the ipod Sad Icon appeared.
I tried to reset the ipod and the monochromatic apple symbol appeared showing it was fully discharged.
I left it charging for all night long, but the problem persists.
Any idea?

Can anybody help with this? I do not think it's a battery problem as it is actually being charged. If anything it's a software problem?...

IPod Photo 60GB goes from sad icon to no reaction at all

After getting the sad icon after plugging it in, I took apart the iPod so I could reseat the hard drive and see what happens. I still got the sad icon (yes, sometimes re-seating the hard drive brings it back to life, based on my experiences), so I wanted to try again and put pressure on the center of the hard drive platters with my thumb.
In doing so, I accidentally disconnected the molex connector to the hold-switch. I forgot the state of the hold switch when this happened.
I put everything back together to see what will happen when I plug in the sync/power cable.
There's no reaction and no Apple logo.
How can I bring back the iPod at least back to the sad-icon state?

3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”

A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"

Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.

Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

HELP!! ipod has sad icon but nothing's working

i think i was clicking too fast through my music when suddenly my ipod froze (my bad!). i tried the menu + select thing but it didn't work, it just remained frozen. i noticed the battery was low. when i fiddled around with it and nothing was working, i just put my ipod away (i was at school) and decided to let the battery die down and leave it alone, since i didn't know what i was doing away.
so i get home. the screen is dark. i connect my ipod with the usb port to my computer and the strange thing is, IT'S NOT SHOWING UP on the source menu, so i can't restore it. i log onto this site for help, and it says that when there's a SAD ICON, you should try and "force it into disk mode first". i did that, but it's not working. after i press menu + select, and then menu + play/pause, it just goes back to the sad icon screen again. i did this about 10 times and it keeps doing the same thing.
so i can't force into disk mode because it keeps doing that and i can't restore. am i doing something wrong??

I recently sent my ipod 20 gig photo in to apple. It displayed the sad icon which many people are having problems with lately. I was wondering if anyone has sent their ipod in with this error and what exactly apple did. Did they send you a new 20 gig photo? A new 30 gig video or a refurbished 20 gig photo? It has been over six months after my time of purchase if that helps to narrow down if you were in the same situation as I. Information would be greatly appreciated.

If the damage is due to a manufacturing defect, they will unquestionably replace it. If the damage was caused by misuse or mishandling, such as dropping, Apple is obliged to do nothing. Your best bet is to go to the Genius bar at an Apple store and explain what happened, perhaps they will replace the iPod. Also, If you bought your iPod with a credit card, check with your card company. Some cards provide Purchase Protection insurance which will replace or repair any item lost, stolen or damaged within 90 days of purchase.

Ipod making funny noises and Sad icon

Instead of the normal hum of my ipod it hums for a second then makes a loud click and then hums for another few seconds then clicks again and so on. It also freezes up on songs and wont play songs. Then when i try to reset it i gets hung in a loop of the apple symbol then the sad icon or sometimes the ! icon. Waht is wrong??

Sad icon when trying to boot after using iTrip

I tried to use Griffin iTrip product with iPod. Ipod then froze & ever since I cannot reboot. When doing so, get "sad" icon after apple logo appears, but will not boot up. Unit is charged. Help please !

Then the best thing to do is call up Apple and request a box be mailed to you. They'll send the box free of charge & do any repairs that are necessary. Alternatively, you can have your installation discs sent to you from your home to do some more troubleshooting.
Unfortunately, if you send the machine in for repair, they won't save any data off the hard drive.

Why Does it Keep Giving Me Sad Icon?

I have a 60GB iPod photo and lately it has been giving me the sad iPod icon and I have to try to restart it for 5-10 minutes. My warranty people won't do anything unless I bring it into them with the sad icon.
I was just wondering if anyone knows why it keeps saying it can't find information on the disk. I rarely drop it and it is in a case anyway and I don't put it around magnets.

Yes, I've gone through the troubleshooting thing. Everything except erasing the ipod. If I connect it to my computer sad it makes my computer crash. It doesn't crash, but the screen will go blank and when I restart the computer it won't load all the way. It stops right before the welcome screen.
When I first got it (190 days ago) I dropped it from 4 feet onto concrete and I didn't have any problems with it until a month ago.

Sad icon and sad user

I've had an iPod for 2 years now and I love it. I've personally bought 5 iPods for friends who heard me rave about it and know others have followed. I've switched to Mac, I've started podcasting and it's all because of my iPod.
But, in less then two years I've already had to replace my iPod twice. The sad icon came and I returned it. Fine, it can happen. Six months later, bang. IT happened again. Bad luck I thought to myself. Now, it's happened again. This time I'm no longer under warranty and Apple says I need to pay repair myself (as much as the iPod itself).
I'm debating switching away from Apple. I'm super careful about things and I don't think the fault here is mine, but even if it was I'd like to know what I did to cause this. Apple's never let me know and I don't want to spend more hard earned money for a product that is eventually going to ahve to be replaced because it's obviously poorly made.
Can anyone help me? I think Apple should replace my iPod at their cost because I don't think the fault is mine. If they don't I'm switching. Can anyone advise me on something that's more reliable then the iPod?

Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

Sad icon- depleted icon- reset

yesterday while i was listening to my ipod mini, it froze in the middle of a song. at the time the battery was very low, so i figured it had died, but when i got home and plugged it in to charge, the sad icon showed up and the ipod started beeping. then the depleted icon came on screen for about a minute, afterwhich the ipod reset and went through the same process again. how do i fix this? when i hold the ipod close to my ear i can also hear a clicking sound inbetween beeps. the beeps are very quiet and go through several tones.

i tried doing the diagnostic mode as specified in your reply. when i got to the headphone test there is a test for the remote, but i do not have a remote. so now its stuck on that screen waiting for me to press a remote key. i can not do a reset and its been like this for hours.

Out of Hibernation - then Sad icon

When my iPod 5th wakes from hibernation, the Apple logo is displayed, followed by a sad icon.
I then switch off and on, and then the menu appears.
Is this normal, or are problems building up?

Here is a pretty comprehensive post about the sad iPod icon. Be aware that it's quite involved and contains some info that will almost certainly void the warranty. If your iPod is still within the warranty period, you should use that option first.

I recently purchased a new computer and tried to use my i-pod 5th generation on the new computer but now all I am getting is a sad icon. I have tried to reset it but the sad icon remains. I am not sure if the new computer and the sad icon are related it just seems pretty coincedental. I know sad icons usually mean hard drive troubles but I don't think it is and I hate to send it in and pay money if there is something else I could try. My warranty was just up 1 week ago-which is just my luck. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Mini freezes on a song then....sad icon

i couldn't find a similar problem on the posts. however i am very tired and it is possible i missed it. 2 problems
my ipod will play but:
1. it will never play the first song in a playlist. it shows the 1st song- doesn't play it and immediately goes to the second song.
2. in shuffle mode or on a playlist, it will randomly freeze on a song, I'm then unable to go back to the last song or forward to the next. i'll reset it after if freezes and then I get a sad ipod icon. the ipod turns back on and the playing, freezing, sad ipod icon cycle repeats.
i sent it to apple to haved them look at it/fix it under apple care and they said they found nothing wrong with it.
I reset it after getting it back and the problem still exists.....
should i send it back again for repair? anyone's thoughts are appreciated.

It sounds like your microdrive (the unit that holds the songs on a mini) is wearing out. Explanation to both problems:
Problem 1: Your microdrive is loading the song slowly, so the iPod assumes its not playable, and skips to the next track. If you hit the << (Previous Track) button until you get to the 1st track, it should play then.
Problem 2: Similar to the first one. Your iPod has to look all over the microdrive to find the song when it shuffles. As far as freezing, it may be loading the song so slow, that it takes longer to load the song than the actual song is (thus freezing at the point it loaded at).
Whats probably wrong with the microdrive: It seems to me that its possible that the head in the microdrive (the unit that reads the tiny CD-like disc in the drive, like a record player but smaller) is misaligned, causing the problems. This can be why the sad face is occuring (takes a long time to load the iPod firmware, so the bootloader assumes theres a hardware issue, and gives the sad icon, but is able to finally finish loading, thus able to work again.
What to do about it:

If none of the suggestions in his post were helpful to you, then you need a new microdrive in your iPod (or, if you'd rather, a new iPod, as this part can be rather expensive).
