IPod seems in "locked" mode when connected to iTunes

When I connect my 5th gen. iPod to my computer, I am not able to access the music or movies on the iPod itself when I click on my iPod in the source section of iTunes. I can access my library and other sources, but when I select to look at my actual iPod, everything in the window is grey and I can't select anything within it. There is also a lock next to how much space is available on my iPod, which has over 45 GB left over. Due to this, when I import songs or movies, the only way I can transfer these files to the iPod is to select "file, Update iPod," which works, but is annoying. I am used to being able to just drag new files onto my iPod and having them upload that way, but as everything is grey, I can't access this source folder. HELP PLEASE!

Grey text when you look at the content and lock symbol at the bottom of the screen simply shows that your iPod is set to "automatically update songs and playlists". . If you want to access your iPod directly, play it through your iTunes, connect it to a second computer etc. you just need to change the update method to "Manually manage songs and Playlists" in the iPod preferences. For more detail see this tutorial: Managing Your Songs Manually
One thing to be aware of when manually updating is that the iPod also has to be manually ejected before the "Do Not Disconnect" message will go away. Safely disconnect iPod
For info: iPod 101
The iPod offers three ways to transfer music from your computer. You can select one of the following update modes from the iPod Preferences menu in iTunes (Edit=>Preferences=>'iPod' tab):
1) Automatically update all songs and playlists. This is the default mode, in which your entire music library, including playlists, is automatically synced to your iPod. If the music library on your computer exceeds the iPod storage capacity, you are prompted to select a different update method.
2) Automatically update selected playlists only. With this option, iTunes automatically copies the playlists you have selected to the iPod when you connect it to the computer.
3) Manually manage songs and playlists. You can also choose to transfer music to the iPod manually. This allows you to drag and drop individual songs and playlists from iTunes to the iPod.
Your iPod is set to automatically update, change it to manual and you'll be able to access it directly

  • IPod in recovery mode when connected to iTunes. Why is this happening? Is there any fix?

I just bought an iPod Touch, but when I attempt to connect it iTunes it tells me that my iPod is in recovery mode. It works just fine when its not connected to iTunes. I'm wondering if the problem is my computer or just my iTunes itself. When I first plugged my iPod in it was okay and I downloaded all of my music I had from my previous iPod. When I wanted to update the software... forget about it. iTunes freaked and told me my iPod was in recovery mode and I had to restore it to factory settings right after I took 2 hours downloading everything onto it. Any thoughts and ideas would be so greatly appreciated right now. All I want is to listen to music.

I would make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. When you keep having the problem after restoring to factory setting that indicates a hardware problem.

  • Ipod Classic Stuck In 'Verifying Ipod' Mode When Connecting To iTunes

I currently own an iPod Classic 160GB and an iPod 5th Gen 30GB. Both of them were working perfectly and synchronizing with iTunes up until i upgraded my OS system to Windows 7 from XP. I am also running iTunes 9.2
Now when i try and synch them, both say 'Verifying iPod' and then iTunes freezes after 5 minutes and i have to disconnect them and start all over again. I have not been able to update either of them with music for over 2 months.
Some blogs say to try and move you .xml file out of your library, some say change the .itl file to .itl.old and some say try changing back to a previous version of iTunes. However none of these have worked for me.
I have over 110GB of music on my computer and i'm trying to avoid wiping iTunes off my computer altogether and having to reload it all back on. I've had to do this once before and it took about 3 months as i had to double click on every single track befor itunes would load it - and thats a lot of songs to click ! Unless of course somebody out there knows a quick way of wiping iTunes off my hard drive altogether and starting all over again.......................??
Has anybody had the same problem or anyone got any solutions ??

My iPod Classic is also sticking in verify then iTunes freezes. This only happened after iTunes was updated to 9.2. According to CCleaner's registry check, two problems appear - both are missing TypeLib References; the IUserHelper and the IiPodManagerUI. I can only assume that the latest iTunes is causing the trouble because of these missing files. This led to me completely reinstalling iTunes yesterday, but all that achieved was to empty my iPod and leave me library-less. The only way around it I can see is to wait for a new iTunes update. A real pain.

  • My 7 year old has forgotten her password and now her ipod touch is locked and says connect to itunes. I have tried to connect however it will not connect because it is locked. How can I reset her password?

My seven year old daughter got an ipod touch a few months ago from her father. She has now forgotten her password and it has been tried too many times and so the ipod has been disabled. It now say connect to itunes. I have tried to do this with the USB cable and itunes on my computer. Unfortunately it will not work as it will not connect saying the device is locked and to enter the password.
This is not the computer that she previously connected to and she may not be able to get access to that computer. Is there a way for us to reset the password preferably without having to restore the ipod and lose everything she has on it?

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

    iTunes: Restoring iOS software
    To restore from backup see:
    iOS: How to back up
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

  • IPod Nano 4th Gen wiped when connecting to iTunes 10.0

    Hey all
Don't know if anyone else is having this issue... my iTunes went crazy just now (recently updated to version 10) when I routinely attached my iPod. Got this message saying "duplicate file" something or other, and the thing wouldn't sync. I tried to reboot it and ALL of my music had been wiped. Fun. And after restarting iTunes it still wouldn't sync (the same error message just kept coming up). Not fun.
Eventually had to restore the iPod to factory settings just to get the thing to switch on.
Is anyone else having this issue??

I am having a problem after upgrading to iTunes 10, I get a message that my iPod 'is synced with another iTunes library. An iPod can be synced with only one iTunes library at a time. Well....I cannot locate this other iTunes Library and know if I sync with the one that opens I will lose all my current songs.

  • 2nd iPod Classic locking up when connecting to MacBook Pro

I'll sum up the lead-in story as best I can.
I have a 2010 MacBook Pro 13". Just got an new iPod Classic a couple weeks back. I discovered that when playing the iQuiz game, I had a few lock-ups (freezing). Then a handful of times, it locked up when connecting it to the MacBook for charging or syncing. It didn't lock up EVERY time. But about 1 out of every 4 syncs on average.
I naturally thought something was wrong with the Classic, and brought it into the Apple store when it was locked up, and they gave me a new one.
But now this one is doing the same thing. Occasional lock-ups when connecting to the MacBook Pro. Doesn't matter which USB port. And doesn't seem to matter if the computer has been on, or if it's a fresh boot.
What could be going on here? I doubt highly that both Classics I've gotten have the same exact issue with occasional lock-ups when connected to the computer. My MBP otherwise has given me no problems. And no problems with other USB devices, ever.
    Any ideas?

Update: bought a new usb sync cable to try, and no change. the Classic locked up the first try with the new cable.

  • IPod Classic 80 GB Freezes when connecting to Computer

    Hi.
My iPod Classic 80 GB Freezes when connecting to my computer (Vista... yes... I know). I've got my iPod for over a year now and I've never had real trouble with it.
When I plug it in (iTunes already running) my computer gives me the 'thumbthumb' noise because an USB thingamajib is connected to the computer. At this moment my iPod freezes and stays on. iTunes doesn't seem to find my pod. When I disconnect my iPod, it'll stay on (doesn't go energy safe mode) and stays frozen until the battery is empty. But by then, I've already lost my playing info (Which I really value).
    Pllllllease help me out her.

Someone has finally found a solution to this problem and i decided that i would spread the word around ... so here are the steps:
    1) Quit iTunes.
    2) Delete iTunes from your Applications folder.
    3) Go to your ~/Music/iTunes folder. Delete or rename the "iTunes Library" file.
    4) Open the "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder and look for the backup of your old pre-9 library; it should be dated at about the time you first ran iTunes 9. Copy it back out to the ~/Music/iTunes folder, and rename it to "iTunes Library".
    6) Go to <http://support.apple.com/downloads/iTunes8_21> and download iTunes 8.2.1. The page says it's for G3, but the Read Me file says it'll run on G4, G5, and Intel too. Open the diskimage and run the installer.
You should now be able to run iTunes 8.2.1 again.
And your iTunes will restore to before you upgraded and you won't lose anything.
*If you download the iTunes file from the "support.apple" link, and you can't open it, go to http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/06/28/apple-itunes-8-2-and-quicktime-7-6-2-di rect-download-links/ and download "iTunes 8.2 for Windows: iTunesSetup.exe

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • IPod Classic's screen when connecting to ITunes

With my IPod Classic 80GB with displying time on the menu, when connecting(Syncing) to ITunes, where time was displyed on the top grey line like 8:20PM for example, it turns into a meaningless letter 'P'.
If the time is like 8:20AM, no such letter will appear on this grey line.
Is this for everyone's ipod classics? Or only mines stuffed.
No fault on its functions, but curious if this is just a stuff up by Apple.
    Your yes/no is much appreciated.
    Thanks.

I'm seeing the same here, too. Letter "P" on top of the screen when connected to iTunes.
I will see if turning off the clock in the display or switching to 24hour time works. Hadn't noticed if connected in the AM makes a difference since I usually synch up at night in the PM.
The iPod seems to operate just fine otherwise.
