IPod shorting out headphones? (Kinda long)

I have had my iPod Touch 4g for over a year, and I have been through numerous earbuds/headphones.  I always thought that it was just because I was getting cheap headphones, so I got a $40 pair of headphones in January.  It is now June and I have already been through two pairs of the same brand of headphones (Philips O'Neill THE STRETCH headphones), and have another replacement pair on the way.  While I am waiting on my 2nd replacement pair, I am borrowing my mom's pair of the Stretch that she hasn't had a problem with, and last night they shorted out too in the same exact spot as the other two pairs.  I take care of my iPod and my headphones, but the headphones keep shorting out and it happens all of a sudden.  I don't have AppleCare anymore because it has been over a year, but I do have a Squaretrade warranty for 3 years.  Is there something I can do, or should I bite the bullet and just send in my iPod in for repairs, or is there even something that Apple may be able to do so I don't have to be without my iPod?  Also should I try getting Bluetooth headphones? Maybe that will help.
Thanks for reading this and helping me.  I am so bummed about this.

- I conclude that there is somneting wrong with the headphone jack in your iPod and that is damaging the headphones. Other users have reported similar bad sounds when the headphone jack need replacement.
- I would make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store and hear what they have to say. The appointment is free, Then, depending upon what they say, try to claim replacement under your SquareTrades warranty.

  • IPod Shorting Out FM Transmitter(s)??

Hello. I originally posted this on another iPod-oriented forum, and I have to assume that no one has an answer, as it hasn't gotten a single reply yet. Either that, or I don't have enough 'cred' there yet. Nevermind my insecurities, here's the deal:
    IPod Vs. FM Transmitter Problem
Hello. My 5th-generation 30GB Video iPod has had some problems in recent months, but none too devastating. It used to require me to 'reset' it everytime I wanted to use it after a prolonged 'power down' period. Recently, however, it seems like it's destroying FM transmitters...or at least not being willing to play nicely with them.
I first had a Monster FM transmitter that worked great for the longest time, then I believe a short occurred in it that would cause the iPod to automatically 'pause' when it would get jarred a little. I gave up on that cord a little over a month ago and got a Kensington transmitter from Amazon. That worked perfectly for about three days and then just abruptly shorted out and completely died.
But it gets better, and by that, I mean worse. I receive the 'exchange' Kensington transmitter yesterday and that shorts out INSTANTLY. I realize that it's entirely possible that I got two defective items from Amazon consecutively, but I have to believe the problem is on the iPod's end. You see, I went out and picked up an iTrip one at Best Buy today, and that seems to cause the iPod to 'freeze' up, the touch wheel barely functioning when it's attached. The iTrip appears to sustain power, though. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to test someone else's iPod with it yet.
My iPod, while connected to my PC, seems to work fine, except that some unknown application is preventing me from ejecting it through iTunes, but whatever. As a standalone device, it also works, and the touch wheel is appropriately responsive. I could be wrong, but I think something happened to it after that Monster cable went on the fritz (even though the resetting nonsense started well before that point). I looked at the USB/power input area, and the 'male' part on the inside almost looks like it's got a tiny char mark on it.
I have the AppleCare Protection Plan, and I'm wondering if the likely scenario is something they'll even assume responsibility for....I've restored the thing twice now since purchase in October '05, having to re-import roughly 5,000 songs after the first time. I don't want to even bother starting that arduous process if this thing is a lemon, if it's going to continue to 'blow up' FM transmitters because of some sort of power surge.
Any concrete information on what's causing this or educated guesses would be greatly appreciated.
I'm about at wit's end with the whole thing, and I'm really concerned that Apple will wash their hands of responsibility. Ever since the 7.0 iTunes update, I've had minor, nagging problems with it, but nothing like the thing potentially being a transmitter mass-murderer.

Have you reset your ipod? That usually helps with any external devices attaching to it.
I'm also wondering (based upon the transmitters you've used so far) if it's not your car lighter that's causing the short? The itrip doesn't use the charger but the others do and since the itrip is working (albeit slowly) the car lighter might be the source.

  • Headphone jack shorting out for left ear

My ipod touch 4g is in pristine condition. It's only been dropped once, and not from very high, maybe a couple of inches, at most. but now i find that the headphone jack is not working properly. At first I thought it was my old headphones shorting out, so I went and bought new ones. The left bud wasn't working on this one either. But if I wiggle the plug a bit, the left bud comes in. I tried my friends headphones to see if it was just a fluke, and sure enough, the headphones left bud wasn't working.
The ipod is practically new, got it last July. What can I do?

As your iPodToch is less than I year old t should be under warranty and so I suggest you take it into your nearest Apple store and have them look at it. They should be able to diagnose the problem for you.

  • Why does my ipod touch break headphones within a day??

I have a 3rd gen ipod touch. One day my heaphones got caught on something and the headphone cord snapped but still left the headphone plug in the jack... maybe this shorted something out inside the headphone jack??? 3 days later the aux cord ive been using in my car started getting crackly and one side quit working. The next day the same happened with a brand new pair of skullcandies. 2 days later, same with a pair of older headphones I've had for a while. Is my ipod breaking the headphones? Do i just need a new headphone jack in my ipod or any other ideas?? Also where do you reccommend i get it fixed?

  • Ipod Touch 5 will no longer sync after update 7.1.2

After updating from iOS 7.1.1 to 7.1.2 my Ipod touch 5th gen no longer syncs with my iTunes 11.3.1.1 when connecting it to my computer (windows 8.1) what comes up on my touch's screen is "trust this computer?" I press the "trust" button then a few seconds later I get the disconnected tone from my computer and nothing else happens (it still charges) and just checked it out on my Windows 7 computer (iTunes 11.3.1.2)and it recognized it fine (but the other computer has my playlists) I've tried updating to iTunes 11.3.1.2, updating iPod drivers and uninstalling then re-installing iPod drivers and iTunes is still not connecting to my iPod. Help please.

On your computer go to the control panel (hover in the lower right corner) then programs, add/remove programs
Uninstall iTunes, Apple Mobile Device Service, Apple Application Support then go to apple.com and redownload and reinstall iTunes and try again.
You won't lose any content, you're not deleting that, just the programs that access them.
What is thought to happen is that sometimes a new version of itunes doesn't update the drivers in those other two programs. The only way to update the drivers is to force it by uninstalling the programs which allows itunes to write the correct ones.
My iPad and iPod did exactly the same thing and this is how I fixed it.

  • Update 10.2.2 older ipod/iphone sync cables no longer work.

Update 10.2.2. I updated to 10.2.2 and my older ipod/iphone sync cables no longer work. Im talking about the cables with the longer connector and the connector locks not the new style that is a short plug with no lock. Anyone else having this issue?
Tried normal steps, reinstall restart etc. No change. I'm at work and the cable works fine on 10.2.1.1 something in the update must have changed.

  • Turning ipod on with headphones

Hi, this question may sounds stupid but I dropped my ipod touch this morning and I want to make sure everything is still working fine. My ipod is the latest generation. So the question, is it supposed to automatically turn on when you plug the headphones like it used to do with the older ipods or the ipod touch just doesn't do that?
    Thank you

If you take out headphones it pauses, if you put them back in it's still paused.

  • Ipod stays in headphone mode

I can't get our brand new ipod touch out of headphone mode. It plays sound fine with headphones plugged in, but when the headphones are unplugged there is no sound. I have tried putting in the headphones and pulling them out, I have tried cleaning the headphone jack, I have tried erasing the ipod and restoring all of the data and nothing works.

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so. There is a little switch in the headphone jack that disconnects the speaker when the headphone jack is inserted.

  • How to get an ipod touch out of recovery mode.

I want to get my iPod Touch out of recover mode and i don't know how I got into it.
All that happened was that my iPod Touch ran out of battery, so I plugged it into my MacBook and when it turned on I just got the Connect to iTunes screen.
I tried turning it off and then on again but to no effect.
I also tried holding down the Home and Power button until the apple logo shows up then release but that still did not work.
What should I do to get it out of recovery mode without restoring??

If re-starting the AMDS driver doesn't work, you can try removing iTunes and AMDS, then re-installing iTunes (which will re-install AMDS).
If that doesn't work, try putting the Touch into DFU mode. You kind of mentioned it above where you held the buttons down while connected to iTunes, but it didn't sound exactly correct and it can be a little tricky to get the timing down.
While having the Touch connected to the computer (and iTunes running) hold the Sleep and Home buttons until the Touch screen goes black (about 10 seconds). When that happens release only the Sleep button -- keep holding the Home button until iTunes says it found a device in recovery mode. At that point you release the Home button and will have to Restore the device, and you can try re-loading your last backup after the Restore process completes.
