IPod show in 'My Computer', locks itunes, wont sync

I have an iPod Classic 120 GB its about 3 or 4 years old (serial #8M836QEP2C5), has worked fine until I noticed it wasnt syncing in itunes (version 10.1). I'm not sure if it decided to do that before or after I updated iTunes.
iPod shows in My Computer
iPod shows in Safely Remove Hardware (but if I try and eject from there it says it's in use)
plugging in iPod wont auto load iTunes
Itunes is open and locks up when I connect iPod
Close ipod and have to pull out USB cord to disconnect (then it will say okay to disconnect)
when iPod is connected to USB it shows 'Connected' on ipod screen
restarted ipod with menu, center button
uninstalled and reinstalled itunes like apple said
stopped and started device like apple said
changed USB ports
..Nothing helps...
my pictures are still on my iPod but everything else is empty.
I was thinking of buying an iPod touch before this happened, now i just want to throw my iPod Classic into the road and watch cars run over it. Please Help.

First tried putting your iPod into disk mode, following the steps here.
Then, with your iPod in disk mode, connect it to your computer.
Is it recognized in iTunes that way?
If not, then have you seen all of the suggestions in these two Knowledge Base articles on the matter?:

I am also having this problem. I have an iPod Nano. I can connect it to the computer, and view it in Windows. I can also see it in the device manager. I have tried it on multiple computers with the same result. I have another iPod (first generation) and it works fine on both computers. I've also done the following:
1. Reinstalled iTunes, including download the Microsoft Software removal tool.
2. Deleted the windows Temp files.
3. Uninstalled the new version of iTunes, and installed the old updater, and old itunes. Reinstalled the new iTunes when that did not work, and uninstalled the old software.
iTunes does detect the iPod if I manually put it into disk mode and connect it to the computer. I can also load music this way, but it's inconvenient.

This is correct. It will not show in finder. It is not an external storage device.
The music sync is one way - computer to ipod. The only exception is itunes purchases. Open itunes connect ipod, do not sync, click File>Transfer Purchases

iPods and other iDevices are not backup or storage devices.
Copy the ENTIRE iTunes folder (and all other desired data) from the old computer to the new computer.

You can only drag and drop if you have iTunes configured to manually manage music. With the iPod connected to the compute go to the Summary pane for the iPod and check the box under Options that says sync only checked songs and videos.

Did you place the iPod in recovery mode? That is required for a disabled iPod

You need to "authorize" the Mac.
Launch iTunes on the Mac then from the iTunes menu bar top of your screen click Store > Authorize This Computer.
Now, using the same Apple ID as you used to purchased iTunes media originally, you should be able to sync all your content.

How do I upload music from my iPod to my new computer's iTunes Library?

To try to explain this simply;
I recently purchased a new computer (Toshiba laptop),
I have already uploaded some CD's to my Library and synced my iPod Touch to my Library,
But when I connect my iPod Classic to my computer's iTunes tells me that my iPod is already synced to another Lirbrary and gives me the options of either to "Transfer Purchases" or " Sync and Erase",
I've tried to "Transfer Purchases" but it seems to upload literally only iTunes store purchases but I want to upload ALL of the music from my iPod to my Library because I have purchased albulms from a (deleted) Rhapsody account and I also have Youtube converted songs (which basically makes up my entire Library),
I also have uploaded files from my old computer with an external hard drive but I have absoulutly no idea how to find them,
So! I need to upload my music from my iPod to my Library without deleting music from my existing Library or my iPod
Please help! And please explain as well as you can, I get confused easily..

The best way is to use the backup you made on the old computer and restore the iTunes folder to the new computer. No backup? The if the old computer is still working using an external device to copy the iTunes folder from the old computer and copy it to the new one.
