IPod Showing Less Space Than It Should

Hi
I've got a 4G 40GB iPod which I use for both music and storing data. Now I've just removed a few GBs of work I had stored on there leaving only about 100 MB of files. My iTunes library comes to 33GB but my iPod says I only have 700 MB spare.
Now I know its capacity is really only about 37GB but that should still leave me with another 3Gb of current free space.
Are there some kind of hidden files or have the files I moved to the trash not actually been removed?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
iMac G5 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I feel so ashamed.
I was just returning to the board to withdraw this question as I realised I hadn't actually dumped the trash.
Thanks for your quick reply though. Much appreciated.
I'm off to soak my head.

  • 4G 20GB ipod showing less space and I've already emtied the trash

    Hey all,
I have an interesting thing going on.
    Basically I have a 20GB iPod
In the finder if I bring up an info window for the ipod it shows that 18.5gb are taken up and there are 1.5gb or so free space.
Here's where it gets interesting. Earlier, I offloaded some files from my ipod so I could free space on the ipod. About 4gb worth of files.
I was in a studio class and we used my ipod for disk space and worked off of the drive because the network it the school was horribly bogging down. We were working on a podcast in iMovie. This all worked fine. when we were done, we deleted the files that we were working from that were on my iPod after backing them up elsewhere. Then I don't believe the trash was emptied at that time.
I'm now at home on my laptop and emptied the trash and it shows. that I have 18.5gb taken up. I know this is impossible as the files from the podcast were deleted from my iPod and the trash was emptied. My trash bin shows that it is empty even if I open it. Not a thing there.
Next, I've used an application called Disk Inventory X. A great app that allows you to index and get a visual representation on what's hogging the space on your drives so you can zone in on stuff you don't need when you're fighting for disk space.
In this case, it showed everything itemized and in a visual like it always does but this time it shows files totaling less than 12gb. This includes all of my iTunes library that is loaded on it. That comes up in a folder called "iPod_Control" and then in folders "Music" "iTunes" "Device" and a file "iPodPrefs". So yes it is clear that the application Disk Inventory X is showing all of the files.
Now.. the big question is what's going on with the rest of the 5gb or so that are unaccounted for? The space that was clearly there before. I've tried to put those files that were stored on my iPod before it was used for the podcast but it says there is not sufficient space.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    J

    Thanks very much Jeff.
I figured that was the next plan of action. I hope that resolveds the problem. I just have to free up some hard drive space to backup some files and stuff first.
    Take Care.

  • I have less space than I should

I recently deleted my 50 gb parallels partition, but I didn't get any space back. My Macintosh HD says that it's size is 171.15 gb, and If I try to make a boot camp partition, It only says 80 gb left (250 gb ssd). But If I go to more info, It says 60 gb used. When I used super dupe rto back it up though, It backed up 171.15 gb. Any ideas? I had 125 gb before I installed windows with parallels 5 days ago.

    > I recently deleted my 50 gb parallels partition
Unless you were using a physical partition created by Boot Camp Assistant so you could dual boot and run Windows natively, all you did was remove a file.
And the way to remove Boot Camp Assistant partitions is, from BCA again.
If you used Disk Utility, you should try Lion Recovery or your OS X DVD to "stretch" the main HFS volume to the full hard drive (SSD) space. But Disk Utility is not how you properly want to 'delete' a partition.
And based on SD, it sounds like you still have Parallels.

  • Movie files take up more space than they should

Hi! I'm new to iDVD, and I wanted to take about 20 .mp4 files and put them on a DVD that a DVD player hooked to my TV will be able to read. The combined size of all the files is under 4GB and will fit on a burnable DVD. But when I drag them into iDVD, it only lets me have like 5 before it says it is full. Why is this happening? Why should the video take up more space than the file's actual size? If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it!

iDVD works on time and NOT on RAW file size!!
All video is converted to MPG-2 by the encoding process in iDVD. With a single layer disc, you can get UP TO 60 minutes of content in Best Performance mode and UP TO 120 minutes in Best Quality mode.

  • "Safari can't cnnnect to the server" less often than it should

Very recently, I've had increasing difficulties acccessing certain sites, which respond with a "Safari can't connect to the server." However, when I use a different Mac, there's no problem connecting.
This is a big problem when going to an official site like MacUpdate or Versiontracker. If I try to download, say, a demo of iDefrag, I frequently get the error message. But it happens more frequently than it should with simple web surfing on sites (like http://www.jdorama.com/) I know are online.
Aside from the recent Security Update, the only major change in my system has been that my ISP bumped my DSL speed from about 1.6mb/s to 2.1mb/s.
What might be causing this problem?

Thanks. My hunch is your settings need some refinement. Try these suggestions in your System Preferences> Network panel (I'm assuming you are using the TCP panel for your IP address etc.)
Go to the System Preferences>Network panel
    - Location - set up a personal location by clicking on the drop down menu and selecting "add a location". Use a name familiar to you. Once established, select "apply".
    - Next, click on the "Show" drop down menu and select Network Port Configurations. Only Ethernet ought to be checked, unless you use a Bluetooth device.. Move Ethernet to the top of the list (you can drag it). Select "apply".
    - Back to the "Show" menu, select "Ethernet". Click on the TCP panel. There, enter 208.67.222.222 and
208.67.220.220 (separate lines) in the DNS servers box and select "apply".
Creating a personal location, plus adding the DNS codes seems to speed things up. Otherwise, the "automatic" function has a tendency to "search" for available locations.
In the Finder, go to your Utilities folder and select "Terminal". Once the screen is open enter lookupd -flushcache and press return. This clears out the DNS cache. Once done, quit Terminal.
Give these a try and let me know if you see any improvement.

  • Itunes shows less memory than on my Ipod

I just purchased an Ipod picture/video 30gb, I have loaded 3376 songs into Itunes and Ipod so far, no pic's or videos, which comes out to 12.13gb. One day I received a "corrupt file" message in the bottom of my computer related to my Ipod. Itunes and Ipod still run ok, but now my Ipod indicates it only has about 4.6gb of memory remaining from Itunes. I checked memory on my Ipod and it is accurate stating 12.13gb have been used. Why is Itunes indicating that I only have 4.6gb remaining on my Ipod, is there a way to fix this?
    dell 4500s   Windows XP

    Please clarify.
How do you get the audio from a TV show if the show doesn't appear on the iPod? Is it that the show really is there but that the video doesn't appear? If that's the case, check your TV Out setting.

  • Why does itunes say my ipod is using less space than what is being used.

When my ipod is plugged in my pc while running itunes, I click the ipod icon in the source menu. Near the bottom of the itunes window it says how much free space and used space there is availiable on the ipod. Well, mine reads that I have 24.70 gigs free space but the used space is only 3.12 gigs and there is a little lock near where it say's free space. I dunno why it say's that or how to change it. Please help.

    If talking about 30 GB
Advertised GBs are calculated as 100010001000
A computer counts a GB as 102410241024 instead
There is also space used by iPod itself (file system etc.)

  • Ipod has more space than computer!!!!

Hello, I've run into a bit of a problem. I've recently bought a 30 G ipod w/ video, but my computer only has 20 G. Obviously less now, as I've had it for a few years... so lets say 3 G. Is there any way I can keep all my music on my ipod w/o [sync-ing it and keeping all the music on my hard drive]?
    Thank you much =]

You simply have to change the update option of your iPod to "manually manage music and videos". You can get details here: Managing content manually on iPod
One major word of caution. If you delete songs from your PC and have no back up other than the iPod you will risk losing them permanently if your iPod fails or you find you have to restore it to solve a problem. You should consider investing in an additional internal or external hard drive to store/back up your music. Alternatively at the very least back up songs you can't replace such as iTunes downloads to CD or DVD. Forum member Buegie has compiled a very extensive procedure for backing up your music which you'll find at this link: Backing up iTunes
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device. In that case use Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Windows system tray on your desktop or check this link: Safely Disconnect IPod

  • If Apple incorrectly showed more bars than it should have... wouldn't most

phone makers do the same, to make their phone look better?
I lost two bar after upgrading, but I do seem to have similar service. No dropped calls.

I wouldnt say that they are throwing at&t under the bus.. It will just keep at&t honest about where the weak spots are. I would say that they are showing a "truer" signal than was previously shown. Granted my personal opinion like in my previous post.. my best dBm level i've ever seen on my BlackBerry was -70dBm which was full 5 bars. but according to apples new software that 70dBm is within the "5 bar" limit. altho its much closer to the 4 bar section. So realistically should the blackberry have shown 4 instead of 5? Im curious to see if any former blackberry users like myself are able to mention if they have ever had lower than a -70dBm reading on their berry and how their new signal on the iPhone 4 matches up. I usually display the same level signal (with 4.0.1) as i did with my bold 9000. There are some locations that i will show 3 bars where it used to be 5 - but its a very reliable 3 (even had data rates in the 4000kbps down/2400kbps up) in the 3 bar range. So i'm very pleased.

  • LESS MEMORY THAN IT SHOULD!

I have recently bought a 4gb Nano, however, when connected to itunes I am told that there is only 3.79gb available. I've tried "Restoring" it but it made no difference. Is there any way I can access the full 4gb that I thought i'd bought?
    Many Thanks

"One more thing about iPod disk size
In iPod's About menu, the hard disk size is reported as slightly less than the technical specifications for the iPod. The same is true if you connect iPod to your computer in disk mode look at the info or properties window for the disk.
Why the difference? Most hard disk manufacturers measure disk size this way: 1 MB = 1 million bytes (1000 * 1000). A 4 GB disk, therefore, is one that holds 4 billion bytes. Computers, including Windows computers, Macintosh computers and iPod, measure disk size this way: 1 MB = 1 048 576 bytes (1024 * 1024). The difference in these two calculations is what causes the drive to appear as 3.7 GB on a computer, but actually be a 4 billion byte disk."
    ~3.79GB is the correct size.

  • Can not add songs to ipod--says not space when there should be

I have deleted many, many songs from my ipod but when I try to add just one song, I get the message that there is not enough space for the file. Also, the space available is not going down when I delete songs. Help!! Do I need to delete everything and start over?? Many thanks for any help.

Are you deleting actual songs and not just deleting playlists?
Deleting playlists (which are links to the songs) will not free up space on an iPod.

  • Audio Manager showing less space on Memory Card th...

    Hello,
I use a Nokia N70, and am trying to transfer music files to the memory card.
I have the "E" (memory card) option highlighted as the device to copy files to, however it will not let me transfer more than a few tracks before it comes up saying "No space left on phone"
At the bottom of the Audio Manager it says "Used 53299 KB Available: 8967 KB". Yet, it says in the File Manager application that the Memory card has: "Used Space 20.47Mb" "Free Space 40.34 Mb"
Why are the two conflicting? Does anyone have any ideas please?
    Thanks,

Did you ever get an answer
This is exactly what I'm seeing with 6.83. Very frustrating.
    "There is not enough space..."
It is reporting 1490.19/1913.94 used on a 2Gb card. In fact after some cleanup I am only using ~120Mb and have around 1800Mb free!
    This is confirmed by
    - the file browser in PC suite
    - directly accessing the 2Gb card via the "memory card" mode on the N80 (makes card appears as a drive to windows)
    This is under Vista x64
Changing the folder, rebooting phone, rebooting PC -- none of this seems to help

  • Query showing less data than the listcube

    Hi Gurus,
For the same keyfigure I am getting $20 less in the query but the LISTCUBE of the multiprovider is showing correct value compared to R/3.
    Please extend your ideas.

    Hi,
It is exactly the same filter criteria that I have put in the LISTCUBE which is pulling correct data in the list cube.
    Thanks

  • Songs taking up more space than they should?

Well, I have an iPod mini & I have 149 songs on my iTunes, but it says its taking up 3.04 GB I pretty sure it shouldn't, but does anyone know if this is normal and if I can fix it? I don't have any artwork or anything either.

You might want to convert them all to Apple Lossless instead of MP3's or WAV's or whatever. I haven't noticed any loss of sound quality on any of my music and the files are really compact. Worst case is at some point in the future, I go back and reimport my CD's if I think the sound quality's then better. Also - when you do that - convert - it'll have two copies of the songs in your library. The original & the converted version. You can either leave them both showing in your iTunes library, or move the larger versions out to another location. Just have the library show you duplicates, add a column for size or type, and select the larger versions & click Delete. It'll ask you if you want to send the files to the recycle bin or leave them on your hard disk - that's your call. I'd probably be inclined to leave them all right there - if you need the bigger copy at some point, just navigate to the folder in your iTunes folder using Windows Explorer or similar and you'll see both versions. But iTunes and your iPod will only see the more compact converted versions.
