IPod shows red X on the screen and turns off by itself

my 80GB iPod was just sitting on my desk when all of a sudden it turned off. i tried turning it back on, the apple sign shows, then a big red "X" mark shows on the screen and below it shows a link to apple's support page - "www.apple.com/support/ipod".
I clicked everything i can and nothing happens, i plugged it in the computer and iTunes shows nothing. I tried reseting it many times but it'll just show the same red X and turn off again... is my ipod broken for good or can i fix this?

Hey, I had the same problem and did everything I could think of to fix it (apple store, resetting it, draining the charge). Then I started freaking out because I didn't want to spend the money on a new hard drive or a new iPod. So I did a little searching and found this on another forum:
"Some times when you drop your ipod the lens inside skips. (kinda like a record player) reset your ipod by holding the middle and menu button until you hear clicking. then with one hand hold the ipod firmly and hit the side of it onto the PALM of your other hand. Sometimes this jumps the needle back into place but not all the time."
I didn't drop mine like mentioned ablove, it just happened, but I've been frustrated and was going to try anything to not spend another $200+. I used the palm method, and it didn't work. But then I hit the side of the ipod on the ground (carpet of course) about two or three times. It made a funny noise and then turned on and started working like before. What a relief. Hope this helps.

  • Whenever my iPad 2 on iOS 7.0.6 gets a notification, the screen never turns off by itself. How do I fix this?

It has been like this ever since I updated my iPad 2 to iOS 7.0.6 a few weeks ago. This really drains my battery as the screen stays on when I don't notice it and manually put the device to sleep. Any suggestions on how I can fix this? Any help will be much appreciated.

You could try a reset and see if that fixes it : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
If it doesn't then you could try restoring to your last backup and/or resetting back to factory defaults. But if it's a hardware issue then you will need to contact Apple.

I hit the magnifier tool on my iPad and now it only shows a portion of the screen and I cannot get out of it. What do I do?

Which magnifier tool are you referring to? If you double-tap with 3 fingers it should disable zoom. Then you can go into Setttings>Accessibility>Zoom and turn it off.

My iPod Nano 2nd gen. has a black caterpillar-like shape on the screen when turned off.
It disappears when turned on. It must mean something. I recharged and reset. What else, if anything, should I do?

It might also be a good idea to let the iPod's battery fully drain. Then charge it back up and restore it once more in iTunes.
Otherwise, it's likely a hardware issue with the iPod's LCD display, meaning you'll need to take or send your iPod in for service either via Apple or a third party repair service. Here is Apple's repair pricing.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/
Note that they don't actually repair the device, but exchange it for one of the same generation, model, and capacity.  A third party service will actually replace the damage part for a little less.  Google "iPod screen repair" and you should get a number of results to work with.

    does anyone have any solutions?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • When the screen saver turns off my front panel does not refresh.

when the screen saver turns off my front panel does not refresh. If I use the show desktop button sometimes I can not maximize my vi by just clicking on it from the start bar.

I utilize both a screen saver and the show desktop feature but have never seen this problem in the past. You might play around with your screen saver settings to see if they have any affect. You might also try another computer just to make sure something larger scale isn't going on. Also, testing with other programs to make sure it isn't a general OS issue is always a good idea. Other possibilities include changing your Video Driver settings, updating your video driver, and uninstalling - reinstalling.

  • Iphone 3gs freezing/screen flashing between password screen and turning off timer. Any ideas what to do please?

can you help please? Phone having funny fit, screen flashing between password screen and turning off timer. Then screens merging.. Yuk!

    Hey kathlovesparis,
First, I would reset the device:
    Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
via: iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430
And if that doesn't resolve the issue then I would backup the device to iTunes and restore it. Just be cautious and back up first, since restoring deletes all content and settings:

  • HT201263 dropped iphone4 in water and turned off by itself

dropped iphone4 in water and turned off by itself and now cant turn on, plugged it to itunes and was asking to restor, when i did restore it it would not turn on when i try to restart it was still the same and now keeps on asking to restore would not turn on any help.... please

You can try drying it out internally by wrapping the unit in a paper towel and putting it in a bag of dry, uncooked rice (or a bag of silica gel pellets, if you have access to those) for a few days. It's very probable that it's been permanently damaged, but it's possible that if you dry it out, it may then work. If after a few days in the bag it still has problems, then you'll need to pay to get it exchanged (by Apple) or repaired (by a third-party repair service, which voids any warranty).
    Good luck.

  • My ipod has lines all over the screen and would there be any way to get that fixed?

My I pod touch has lines all over the screen and I was wondering if there would be any way to get that fixed?

Try the standard fixes to rule out a hardware problem:
    - Reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod.
If stil problem you very likely have a hardware problem.
Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for:

A third-party place may be less expensive. Here is one.
