I would like to ask if the latest update(version 1.1.5) of the first generation iPod Shuffle working fine? Has anyone experienced errors/bugs/flaws after installing it? I am planning to update but I want to confirm first if it works properly.

IF you have NO problems/issues with your Shuffle, you don't need to update... apparently 1.1.5 has solved a problem with playing recently released music purchased from the iTunes Music Store.

  • IPod shuffle cannot be updated. cannot read/write

    Hi there,
I recently reformatted my Windows XP machine and am now having problems connecting my iPod shuffle again. After installing iTunes 5 and re-associating my iPod shuffle with this computer (that all worked fine), I am now having problems adding songs to the iPod.
When I drag a song onto the iPod, I receive the error: 'The iPod "shuffle" cannot be updated. The disk could not be read from or written to.'
I tried restoring the iPod shuffle with the 9-06-2005 update and that worked fine. My iPod has already been updated to the latest software. I also tried uninstalling iTunes 5 and re-installing after a couple reboots. Then I tried removing the entries in the Device manager for the iPod (both "Disk Drives > Apple iPod USB Device" and "USB Controllers > USB Mass Storage Device"). When I reconnected the iPod, Windows recognized the device and reinstalled the drivers but I'm still having the same issue. Additionally, I've tried every one of my USB ports to no avail.
If I try to enable the shuffle for disk use in iTunes, I also get the same issue. I'm not sure what else to try. The computer and iTunes seems to recognize the iPod shuffle just fine; just reading or writing to the shuffle is a problem. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Isaac

Well, I reformatted the drive (FAT32) and then did a Restore using the latest update (9-23-05, even though today is 9-22-05). iTunes saw the shuffle as a new shuffle and let me name it and then it started to auto-fill the drive. While trying to copy the first song, it says: "The iPod 'Shuffle' cannot be updated. The disk could not be read from or written to."
I tried the iPod shuffle on two other computers and on both of them it works fine. So, I thought it was my primary computer that has the problem. I bought a new USB card, and tried updating the USB drivers again. But, I have the same problem regardless of using the motherboard's USB ports or my new USB card's ports. sigh
    Any other ideas?

  • My iPod Shuffle won't update or restore.

My iPod Shuffle won't update or restore when I put my iPod in it says iPod Service Error or Can't Mount iPod. Can someone please help me?

The same thing happened to me, I called Apple (Is your Ipod still have the free 90 days free phone call?) they told me it was my battery. They said they think I should buy a new one. I did not. I didn't think it is really my battery. Are you connections clean? Have you tried different USB hubs? I've heard the USB's in the back tend to give off more power.
    Hope this helps.

  • IPod Shuffle will not update

My iPod shuffle is refusing to do anything. When connected to iTunes (v. 6.0.1), it will not update songs, either automatically or by manually selecting a playlist. The shuffle also will not update using the 2005-11-17 iPod Updater, both buttons are always grayed out. Every time the shuffle is connected to the computer, and I launch iTunes, it says that I need to update the firmware and directs me to download iPod Update 2005-11-17. The iPod still mounts onto the desktop, and shows up in iTunes, but nothing can be done with it. I have tried whipping the shuffle clean, and it still cannot be updated. I have also tired deleting com.apple.iPod.plist, and that doesn’t work either. I have already searched though the forms here and I have yet to find anything that works. Your help is greatly appreciated.

    FINALLY FIX IT!!!
I found out how to fix this problem. You have to to an archive install of OS 10.4, and then run system updater. Once everything is installed restart, and plug your iPod into your system. Make sure its the 2006-01-10 updater that launches, other wise you can manually download it from the Apple support page. You should then be able to click on the restore button. After this is finished, you can launch iTunes and finally put music on your shuffle.
It works ... and it only took me 3 iPods from Apple to figure it all out.

  • The iPod Freezes after Firmware Update 1.2

I just updated my ipod to the firmware version 1.2 and instantly after the update the ipod started to mal-function.
I hope to god this isnt going to become one of those issues that is overlooked by Apple.
If anyone has any suggestions, or ways to fix this or a similar problem, please do not hesitate to post.

I too had this happen to me. Ipod works great before update. I install itunes7 and update firmware and then it starts freezing during song/podcast or video playback. It has to be reset by holding Menu and center button. I tried a restore on it thinking it didn't update correctly. I re-synced by entire library (which takes a while). That didn't help. So I went back to 1.1.2 update
All I did was uninstall Itunes7 and then got the 06-28 update from the another site and installed and restored my ipod. Reinstalled intunes7 and unchecked update automatically. And re-sync all my library.
3 hours I will never get back. But my ipod works again.
I posted a story to digg about this in the hopes of get Apple to respond that there are major problems with 1.2 update.
    Please digg my story

I'm having trouble with my Ipod shuffle 2nd gen. Every time I try to update it, it won't update. And when I try to charge it, it will only charge when I'm not using Itunes. I really need my shuffle right now this month because I'm going on important trips and I don't mind listening to the same songs I already have on it but I really would like to have this problem fixed. I barerly got my shuffle 2 months ago, is there anyways I can return it for another one?! Please help!

    Several things:
    1. Why does it matter if your shuffle charges only when not using iTunes? Is it because you think so, or does it have to do with blinking versus continuous orange LED. Shuffle charges either way...
    2. YOu can get an external AC->USB Power Adapter (Apple sells one)

  • IPod Shuffle has stopped updating play count

Since the 6.02 update (or possibly the OS 10.4.4 update), my iPod Shuffle has had no problems playing anything I throw at it, but after going through a podcast or a group of songs, no play count is updated in iTunes when I plug it in.
I tried clearing the playlist and adding a bunch of songs under one minute so that I could look at a group. No dice.
I tried restoring the iPod software. No dice.
    Any advice?

I, too, have had this same problem since the 6.0.2 update. The frustrating thing is, it does it intermittently. I'd say every other time I plug the shuffle in, it will update the counts and last played fields.
I load up my shuffle for work every day from a playlist of tunes that I haven't listened to in x amount of time. Lets me hear music that I might forget I had and makes it more like a radio station. I can no longer rely on being able to do this. I got the shuffle for this very purpose. Why can it no longer do what it once did perfectly well?
Any ideas on whether Apple still wants to support this product enough to do another update?

  • IPod Shuffle Won't Update - Misrecognized

    Hi,
I have the following problem: when I connect my Ipod shuffle (got it from a friend recently), it shows up in itunes, and I can add songs. But it won't play any songs. It actually shows up in Itunes not as a shuffle but as an old Ipod with the 4 buttons.
I figured I would run a software update, but the updater also recognizes the shuffle as an old IPod with the 4 buttons. It wants to perform an update, but not the the shuffle version (1.1.3/4?), but to 2.3 for the older IPod model. When I run the update I get the following message:
"An error occurred updating or restoring iPod. Disconnect iPod, reconnect and then try restoring again. If that does not work, go to http://www.apple.com/support/ipod"
I have tried restarting computer, reconnecting IPod, resestting IPod, reinstalling IPod Updater, also available older versions (some of which don't recognize the shuffle at all...), reinstalling ITunes (also 4.7 (?) from CD which doesn't recognize shuffle...) - nothing works.
I then formatted the shuffle to FAT32 on a Windows PC, but nothing changed - it is still recognized as an old IPod. I can't restore the shuffle - the button is disabled because the old IPod that the shuffle is recognized as can only be restored through firewire.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    A.

This sort of thing has come up before, but is sort of rare. I seem to recall solutions having something to do with .kext files, but didn't save any of those links; you should use the Search window to see if any of the threads still exist.
You sound like you've done a pretty good round of troubleshooting already. The only thing I'd question is dropping back to v4.7 on iTunes; I'd probably concentrate more on using either the very latest versions of both Updater and iTunes (or at the latest one removed from current).
This KB article doesn't seem to apply directly, aside from the rather discouraging possibility of OS Archive & Install being a recommented solution, but is the only one I have saved out. You can look for more using the Advanced Search link in the tab bar above.

  • Ipod 4.0 Firmware update Error Fix

This is a possible fix that took me a whole day of work to find
    It came from another post.
    I can tell you that
if you have WiFi sync installed it affects restore on iTunes
So uninstall WifiSync and everything will be alright
My ipod would not restore every time I tried to restore it and it was permanently stuck in recovery mode. Once I installed wifi sync it allowed me to finish the restore and it stopped lagging and freezing. If you've installed wifi sync and you're having this same problem restoring uninstall it. This is porbably why going over to another computer as well fixes the problem. Thats my two cents.

    no.
see http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/ios4-software-update.html and scroll down to compatibility.

    Update Server
    Try:
    - Powering off and then back on your router.
    - iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server
    - Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers
    Public DNS — Google Developers
    OpenDNS IP Addresses
    - For one user uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes resolved the problem
    - Try on another computer/network
    - Wait if it is an Apple problem

  • 1st gen ipod Shuffle not updating play count for songs

I've noticed since I updated to the iTunes version 7.2.035 that plugging in and updating the library with my iPod shuffle no longer updates the play count for the songs I've listened to. Is there a known fix for this? Anyone else experiencing the same problem with their 1st gen ipod shuffle (512)?

Well, I have that problem too. My shuffle holds about 125 songs or so, yet I've noticed there are always a good 20 or so songs that won't play, no matter how many times I load them onto the device. I have had that problem since I inherited it from a friend.
My new problem is that every time I plug my iPod into iTunes, it no longer updates the playcount for songs. In other words, if I load a song that I've heard 3 times, hear it twice during the day, and replug in my iPod at night, it used to update that song's playcount in the library to 5, but now they still read 3. It's also failing to update the "date last played" field.
I use those to help make sure that I don't load the same songs over and over again by creating a custom playlist that will comb out songs played in the last few days and have a very high play count. Since these are no longer updating, I've noticed that I keep arriving at work only to find my iPod has the same or similar songs as the day before, and dude, if I wanted that, I'd listen to the radio!

  • Ipod shuffle system requirements for itunes 5 are they real?

The System requirements posted on Apple's website ( http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?family=iPodshuffle) for the Shuffle say it will work with iTunes 4.7.1 or later.
    Mac System Requirements
    - A Mac with USB port*
    - Mac OS X v10.2.8 or Mac OS X 10.3.4 and later (Mac OS X 10.3.6 or later recommended for use with low-power USB ports)
    - iTunes 4.7.1 or later (included)
The box on a new Shuffle says
Mac OS X v10.2.8 or Mac OS X 10.3.4 or later [snip]
    - iTunes 5.0 or later (included)
I've been using my Shuffle with X.3.8, iTunes 4.7.1 and iTunes 4.9, and Quicktime 6.5.2 until its minijack went defective. I need a replacement shuffle and don't want to upgrade my OS, my itunes, or my QT.
Are these system requirements for real? If I use the iPod Shuffle 1.1 updater will the new Shuffle work with my OS/itunes?
I ask about the updater because once when my current shuffle's playcount stoped updating an Apple Genius suggesting updating the firmware from ipod updater 1 to 1.1 and ever since I can't restore it to version 1 (it gives failure to update errors). I worry that a new Shuffle won't be downgradeable.
If not what version of itunes 5 is best? I recall it was so buggy that it was bum rushed out the door.
Under no circumstances do I want itunes 6. I had 6.0.1. and 6.0.2 on a new hard disk a few months ago (and it required X.3.9 and QT 7) and it was awful! The sound volume dropped precipitously and the sound check didn't work.

Never mind. I returned the Shuffle for a refund. Apple lost a repeat sale by failing to practice the slightest bit of backwards compatibility!
I'm now in the market for an MP3 player that will work on Macs and that can also record audio. If anyone knows of any makes/models please let me know.
