IPod Shuffle doesn't work outdoors

I bought my shuffle about 4 months ago, ever since the weather got cold (like anywhere below 5 degrees C), the player has gotten very flakey - it stops playing, somtimes with a pop, sometimes with a very LOUD screeching noise.
Indoors it works 100% fine.
I tried something the other day (it was about 5 degrees): I was out walking and my player stopped. I found that if I held it in my hand, it played fine. As soon as I put it in my pocket, or around my neck, or if I held it loosely in my hand, it stopped playing within seconds.
I'm trying to figure out if this is a defective product of if this is just iPod shuffles are. Anyone?
Thanks!

Hi,
I too have this trouble. I noticed my 1GB shuffle acting flaky in the car and it didn't last 3 minutes when I went jogging tonight (-7 °C, °19 F). It would just stop of skip around.
The strange part is that in the car it was probably about 10-15 °C (50-60 °F) and the shuffle still was not playing consistently. I thought the thing was broken but when I tested it indoors it played just fine!
So, I conclude that Apple's temperature ratings are just wrong. Mine won't work if it's less than 10 °C (50 °F) or so.
Next time I jog I'll have to put the iPod on my inside layer of clothes... hopefully I won't sweat on it too much!

  • TS1369 My 6th Generation IPod Shuffle doesn't work at all

I've had this IPod for 3 years now. I noticed it wasn't charging when I tried to charge it on my IHome and on my computer. Before this happened, a bug somehow was crawling amongst my IHome and I accidently put my IPod on it. I doubt this caused the problem, but i think it's worth mentioning. I tried connecting it to the computer using the 3 IPod USB connectors my family has, in all the ports. the screen doesn't light up at all. My IPod Touch works with this computer, but not my Shuffle. Is there anything I could do? My warranty is out, obviously.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • IPOD Shuffle doesn't work on home computer but is fine at my work machine.

I have a 1st GEN shuffle and set it up on my computer at home. Everything worked fine. One day, I took it into work and started using/charging it there. Now, when I plug it into my home computer, I get an error message indicating that my "shuffle may be corrupt"? I've tried to restore it at home but that doesn't seem to work. Even with the iTUNES and software updates. When I restroed it on my work machine, everything went fine. My shuffle now seems to have it's heart attached to my work machine and doesn't want anything to do with my home one. Am I totally screwed now? I bought it 11.20.2005 and I was kinda hoping for a longer life than this. Any ideas?

Your posting was the first of the hundreds that I read that was almost exactly like mine (even the date I received my shuffle).
How did you get Apple to replace? I really liked it when it worked - not looking to replace it at all!
Thanks for posting - really helped!!

  • IPod shuffle doesn't sync with iTunes??

iPod shuffle doesn't sync with iTunes??

After connecting it, the light should continue to flash (if you use the Manually manage music or Enable disk use setting), or it should become a solid (not flashing) color (if you use automatic syncing).  The light going OFF may indicate that the shuffle is not able to charge.  You are using the original USB cable that came with the shuffle (it has a mini-dock), correct?
That problem could be caused by the shuffle itself.  Since a 2nd gen shuffle is at least five or six years old at this point, it may be the battery becoming worn out.  It may also be a problem on the USB port.  As a test, try shutting down (powering off) the Mac and disconnect all USB devices (including any hub), except for standard keyboard and mouse (if used).  Do this to reset the shuffle
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1655
Start up the Mac, run iTunes, and connect the shuffle to a direct USB port on the Mac.  Is there any difference?

    Hello khcumiskey,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Since you reset the iPod and the issue persists, the next step would be to seek service for your iPod shuffle.

  • My iPod Shuffle is not WORKING! Advice please!

    Hello,
I have iPodShuffle that stoped working this weekend. Just like that! When I say stop working, mean it doesn't appear in Finder or iTunes, but it mounted /Volumes/ without contents. (I also use my iPodShuffle as file storage for over a year now)
So I went to http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60950 (iPod missing in iTunes and Mac desktop) to get some support on how I can get my baby working again. Problem here is that latest iPod updater is in iTunes and restore instruction is assuming that it appears on my iTunes.
I want to restore to factory settings but older updaters don't seems to work (it hangs).
I've also pluged in on Windows machine and see if I see my files (since I also use it as file storage) and I do, but no contents (Keep saying insert Disk E).
I appreciate any useful advice (i don't want to hear "why did you even buy ipodshuffle thing, since I already have one).
    Thank you!

Apple has released and iPod Shuffle 1st generation restorer... and it finnaly worked for me.
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ipodshuffleresetutility10forwindows.html
Theres a solution for Mac OSX too (search for the link).
Now Im affraid that all the procedures I tried before this one to restore it, may have teared my iPod decreasing its timelife...
Is there a way I can assure this?

  • MY IPOD SHUFFLE WON'T WORK!!!!!! (2nd generation)

Last night I accidentally dropped my ipod into the toilet. I immediately took it out and dried it. I even dried the little hole for the head phones. Now I know that it did stay in the water but shouldn't it work just a little? What do I do and does my warranty cover this? Can I get this repaired for cheap?

If after trying the possible to fix the shuffle it doesn't work, you may want to contact your homeowners insurance and see if they cover such accidents. That's more likely to than an AppleCare claim. But small claims often result in increased deductables if not completely being cut off from insurance. So ask them first if it is covered. In addition, if you purchased the shuffle with a credit card, sometimes credit card companies offer their own insurance. Don't mistake a warranty for insurance. It is not. I'm not speculating as to Apple's policy here, which would be a violation of terms, I'm just stating how warranties usually work. I would not attempt to pass it off as anything else. The more people try to do that, the more our AppleCare is going to cost everyone, if not in monetary cost, in time to get iPods repaired. No one ever claimed the machine was waterproof. It is sad that such damage happens, but it does.
I think it best to consider in the future once you do get it repaired or repalced to not ever take it in the bathroom with you again, unless it is already inside some bag that has the zipper securely zipped. These accidents can happen, and do. I've heard about it happening several times on this board.
    Good luck.

  • Ipod shuffle won't work

Somebody please help!! I can't beleive there are so many others out there with the same problem. My son is most disappointed, as am I that his xmas present that he wanted so badly is a piece of %$^#&!!!! Apple should be doing something about this NOW!! If there is anyone who has come up with a quick fix to this problem (I have tried everything) please reply!!!

    Hi,
I like you had many problems getting my ipod shuffle to work properly. I finally got a very helpful apple tech guy to help me, and now it works. Here's what we did (these are instructions for windows xp machines):
    1. Go to apple.com/ipod/download, and download the latest software updater 2005 - 11 - 25.
    2. Once downloaded, install the software updater.
    3. Restart machine, with the ipod inserted in the USB port, power setting to OFF position.
    4. Once cpu is restarted, go to Start -->ipod-->ipod software updater.
    5. Click on "Restore" when the ipod updater window invites you to.
    6. Once finished, disconnect Ipod, and turn the power switch to one of the "on" positions (it doesn't matter which).
    7. Green light should come on and turn off. Turn off power switch a second time and wait 10 seconds.
    8. Insert ipod back into USB port; it should automatically start itunes, which should then offer to setup your ipod.
    9. It will automatically begin downloading all songs from your itunes library onto the ipod. WHen complete, you can disconnect ipod, and hopefully the thing will work.
NB: unlike other mp3 players, you MUST use itunes to download your music onto the ipod. you cannot click and drag music using windows.
Hope this helps, and shame on apple for making it so complicated.

  • IPod Shuffle doesn't show up

I am getting serious troubles with my iPod Shuffle (white and long model, not the latest gray). It doesn't show up on my Desktop and in iTunes 7.0.1. Disk Utility doesn't see it, iPod Updater 2005-06-26 doesn't see it, Terminal doesn't see it in the directory /Volumes. Only Apple System Profiler recognizes an iPod connected to the USB port.
    Version: 10.01
    Bus Power (mA): 500
    Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
    Manufacturer: Apple
    Product ID: 0x1300
    Serial Number: 000A2700109E0AB0
Vendor ID: 0x05ac (Apple Computer, Inc.)
Anyway, the Serial Number printed on the back of the iPod (4H613MLURSA) is different than the one reported by ASP here above.
I run a G5 dual 2GHz with MacOS X 10.4.8 and my other iPod 15GB works well here. The iPod Shuffle battery is charged (green light when I check it). No music plays. I see the front green/orange lights blinking alternately when I press the pause/play button. And I see the back orange light blinking all the time (it should indicate the disk mode). I followed the Apple troubleshooting steps to reset it, unsuccessfully. As I have red here, I even tried to repair my boot disk permissions, reboot and re-plug-in the iPod. Same story. I called Apple Support and since I have trashed the bill I cannot get a replacement (purchased on July 28th 2006). So I would keep on trying to fix the problem by myself. Any suggestion?
    Thanks
