Ipod shuffle generation 2 not being recognized at all

I just bought a ipod shuffle generation 2, and i went ahead and installed itunes 7.02. I then connected the ipod, but windows did not ask me to install any new software. I then went to Device Manager and looked to see if the ipod was being recognized, and it shows up as a yellow question mark called unknown device. I tried to reinstall the drivers, but when windows does a driver scan, it says the following...
"The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software"
The ipod worked on my dads laptop, but my will not computer doesn't want to recognize the ipod at all. The ipod did not come with any software, so I am trying to use itunes 7.02 as it requires. If anyone would be willing to try and help me, I would be very grateful. I'm running windows xp pro.

I have no idea what Dell or Apple told you, so we'll start from the beginning.
First read this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305136 I am assuming since you talked to Dell your USB Driver is up-to-date. Reload your USB Driver anyway follwing the steps in this article.
Next disconnect any USB Device you have connected other than your keyboard and mouse.
Connect your iPod to a USB port on the rear of your computer and see if your computer can recognize it. If it can, right click on the iPod and change the driver letter to a higher letter (M or P) and then reformat your iPod (FAT32 format).
If iTunes can now see your iPod, Restore it.

  • Shuffle Blinking Orange/Not Being Recognized-- Please Help!

I just got a new iPod Shuffle 2nd generation.
I plugged everything in as stated in the instructions.
The only thing that happens is a folder "IPOD(E:)" pops up. It's empty.
Meanwhile, the shuffle is blinking orange.
So I open iTunes. ITunes tells me that this new ipod only works with ITunes 7.02.
Problem: But I DO have 7.02 running. That IS my current version of iTunes. So this pod SHOULD be working.
I'm not getting any "error" messages. Just an empty "IPOD(E:)" folder and the update message. There is no eject button for the shuffle because iTunes does not recognize any iPod as having been connected.
I have a 1st generation Nano that works fine also on this system. I have a Windows XP.
    Help, please!

    awg2009,
The iPod Shuffle (Second Generation) showing up as the E: drive, and iTunes reporting that you need iTunes 7.0.2 mean that iTunes 7.0.2 is not fully installed.
In iTunes, go to the Help menu, and then About iTunes, what is the version number in the first line of scrolling text?
If it still reports 7.0.1, close iTunes.
Go to www.apple.com/itunes/ and download iTunes 7.0.2.
When prompted to save or run the file, be sure to save the iTunesSetup.exe where you can find it later.
After it has downloaded, trun off your anti-virus software which may prevent the iTunes files that may be running in the background from being changed, and run the iTunesSetup.exe.
    Restart the computer after installing.
Then connect the iPod Shuffle (Second Generation).

  • IPod Not being recognized with all the software updates

I've been without my iPod for a few weeks now and I desperately want it back. I dropped it a while back, and have come online to look up stuff to restore it, but none of that is working for me. I reset it by pressing "menu" and "Play" at the same time, then put it into disk mode by pressing the "ff" and "rwd" buttons together, but even in disk mode my computer is not recognizing it at all. The iPod screen says that it is in disk mode, and says it's okay to disconnect, but its not giving me the option to restore when I connect it to my computer and open the iPod updater.
It also gives me the file folder w/ an exclamation point whenever i don't put it into disk mode. And the few times that my computer does pick up something the iPod updater flashes a message that says "Can't Mount iPod" and then the updater manually closes itself. Anyone know what to do?
    Thanks
20GB with Dock Connector   Windows XP

For "Cant mount iPod" - please try the following first
    Click on Start=>Control Panel=>Admin Tools=>Computer Management=>Disk Management
-- Right-Click on the iPod and select “change drive letter”
-- Choose something further along in the alphabet that is unused (Usually, “M”, “N”, “O” or something similar)
    -- Safely eject the iPod
    -- Reboot the PC
If still cant solve it then
The Sad iPods icon, clicking sound or folder with an exclamation mark are the toughest problems to deal with, and must do a Restore in order to fix it. However, when your iPod is showing this icon, it is probably too late for your computer to recognize the iPod.
    1. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    2. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
    Still can't see your iPod?
Several things could keep iPod from appearing in iTunes or in the Desktop/Finder when you connect it to your PC/Mac. The most likely causes are listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the list to see if that is what's keeping iPod from appearing.
    3. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    4. Try another known-good FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    5. Try another known-good FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    6. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    7. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. We've found that in many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
There are also some cases being reported that some unrecognized iPod being able to be erased with Linux, then reconnect the iPod with the original computer and do a Restore there.
    8. Try to do an Erase (Disk Utility) on a Mac computer or a format with a PC (Disk Management tool) but ensure you choose the right Drive (your iPod not your Hard Disk of your computer). You may need to plug and unplug your iPod with the computer for several attempts, and switching around Format and Restore, and hope out of sudden, it will get recognized.
    9. Diagnostic mode solution – which I copied from a thread of a post from thinktwice
“Then I cam across this special Diganostics Mode that you can get to by resetting and then while the Apple is showing pressing the Select and backwards keys simultaneously. It bring up and weird Diagnostic utility witha a abunch of tests. Here is what I did
    - I tried the 5in1 test and got and error on Firewire.
    - I did the HDD R/W and surprisingly it passed.
    - I went on to the HDD scan. This supposedly tkaes acouple of minute so I waited. I think 4-5 dots appeared then nothing. The iPod started to get hot. THe disk was spinning away. After a while the battery got very low. THis test chews up the battery. So I escaped out by resetting and went to connect it to a power source.
My USB was dangling out of my computer and I was too lazy to get the Firewire AC adapter thing going so I connected expecting the whole lockup thing with iTunes. Surprise. IT was recognized immediately and has been working like a champ. So go figure.
Details on Diag mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/index.shtml
    10. Let me ask you a question, if an iPod with no iPod software with it. When your connect it with a computer, what would happen?
Yeah, the computer will treat it as a fresh external hard disk, which will get force mounted, the computer will ask you to format the iPod. It does not really matter the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted iPod software on the iPod, after that the computer will recognize it.
Once it has been completed, eject your iPod, open the iPod updater and interestingly, you will able to do the Restore this time.
Base on the above, that's why I suggest Windows users who experience trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac machine or vice versa. PC computer will not recognize a Mac formatted iPod, but it will get mounted in an attempt to format your iPod.
    11. Put your iPod in disk mode and plug with a computer, and have a boot of your computer using the Mac OS or XP startup disks, hope that your iPod will be seen on Mac's Disk utility and allow you to do a Erase there. Or, under the XP, you will be able to find your iPod there for you to do a Restore.
But, if none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired. You can arrange for service at the iPod Service Website.
I have just read an interesting solution about the Sad iPod, it does make sense but the warranty will be waived once you open the iPod, I would not do it myself as I am not good on doing this

  • IPOD TOUCH  4G IS NOT BEING RECOGNIZED BY ITUNES NOR WINDOWS 7

Hi... I have been using my new ipod Touch 32G  4G for almost two months now, and It has been working great... but for an unknown reason my itunes 10.4.10 (I use a PC with Windows 7 ultimate 32bits in it) stoped recognizing it, and so has my PC... when I plug the ipod to my computer, if I have itunes open, it freezes... if I unplug the Ipod, it start working ok ( I mean itunes)... and once I plug the ipod to the computer it recognizes it as a camera device.. and if I look for it it wont show in (My Computer)... As I said... this happened just a few days ago... it was working OK before... I have re installed several times the last itunes version and even though it works with out the devices conected... once I connect any apple device ( ipod Touch 2G, ipod Touch 4g and an ipad 2G) it wont recognize any of them... the ipods frezze itunes, the ipad doesn´t frezze it, but It doesnt show there either...  What could have happened ?  What should I do ?  I have checked the drivers, uninstalled and installed them again, I have unisntalled and installed itunes several times now, i have tried the devices in other computers also with Windows 7 and they are working OK, so its itunes so is not the cable nor the ipods or ipad...
I dont know what else I can do ...
Would someone please have any ideas on how to solve this ?

I had the exact same problem...and literally, even after calling Apple Help this morning and them emailing what was supposed to fix it, I was still stuck in the same boat. However, after much searching, I found a post on the internet, did what it said, and, as of this morning, my iPod, and my kid's iPods, are now recognized.
Since the most recent iTunes update none of our iPods are recognized by iTunes. Our PC is smart enough to recognize my iPod, but iTunes is not.
After MUCH aggravation....AFTER trying all the fixes outlined by Apple Support, AFTER contacting Apple Help and doing what they said, NOTHING WORKED.
I searched the internet again and found the simplest of instructions. They explain that with the new iTunes update some iPods are being recognized as digital cameras rather than iPods, which mine was doing. This is how I fixed it. Do not have iTunes open.
Attach your iPod to your computer.
    1. Open the Device Manager. (To do this right click on My Computer or Computer, click on Properties, and then click on Device Manager).
    2. Find your iPod. Normally it will show up on it's own, but since your computer is recognizing it as a digital camera it may be under something else; mine was under Portable Devices.
Even though it is saying drivers are up to date based on all Apple Fixes, you DO HAVE TO MANUALLY UPDATE DRIVERS...and this is what you have to do!
    3. Select the Apple iPod by double clicking on it when you find it.
    4. Select Driver on the tabs and click on Update Driver.
    5. Choose Browse My Computer for Driver Software. Once opened, you must locate this file: Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers. Select that folder and Click Next. Once the update is complete, unplug your iPod. Wait 30 seconds and plug it back in...your computer should now recognize the iPod.
To whoever found out about this fix and posted it online, THANK YOU!!! I have spent hours and hours following Apples advice to no avail...but this fix, posted online by someone else, DID work...so thank you for posting it...and I am just passing it on!
Let me know if it works for you...it takes all of 5 minutes and it worked for me this morning!
